  1. Gene,

Yes very much how it looks to me. It's odd.

It seems staged to me too. I have my own ideas about the purpose of it. I wonder if that can be deduced from the immediate aftermath.

An immediate one is Walker calling the cops (and confederates I presume)(the newspaper?). I wonder how they saw it. As a murder attempt and pursued it as such. A shooting among others.

  2. "Oswald shot at Walker." .. ?

I've seen this written so many times.

I've never seen explained how this sharpshooter who got off a couple of kill shots at JFK under difficult circumstances could miss Walker who was stationary, framed by a window in a lit room, at night, shooting from a stable position with more time to draw a bead.

It leaves open the suggestion that Oswald, or X, did not shoot at Walker.

Oswald, or X, shot at the window frame. No repeat shots. (Otherwise Oswald, or X, did not shoot at Walker and JFK. A poor shot shot at Walker and it was or was not connected to the assassination of JFK.)

The only reason I can come up with is to mark Walker as a target, not to kill him.

    Why?

Naturally the effect is that Walker reacts. What is that reaction? What acts does that reaction lead to and what is the result of those acts? et.c..

  3. Turkey continues to send arms, ammunition and jihadists to ISIS–PART I

    Saturday, April 9, 2016 2:30 PM

HESEKÊ - DELİL SERDAR - ANF

ISIS gang Abdurrahim Xalit İbrahim captured by the YPG stated that Turkey continues to send arms, ammunition and jihadists to ISIS mainly through Jarablus and Til Rai. İbrahim noted that the Turkish aid to ISIS decreased because ISIS-Turkey relations got exposed and the border between ISIS and Turkey got shorter.

Captured by the YPG after the ISIS attack on Girê Spî, ISIS gang Abdurrahim Xalit İbrahim code-named Ebu İslam Xerip spoke to ANF. İbrahim was born in Aleppo, joined ISIS two years ago, stated that ISIS viewed Turkey as an ally. İbrahim said that his main duties were to give ideological and political education, recruit new gangs, and organize the gangs that arrived in Syria via Turkey. İbrahim was captured by the YPG in an office building near Siluk after the ISIS attack on Girê Spî.

Regarding the relations between Turkey and ISIS, İbrahim said that the two entities had shared ideologies and goals, and would never fight one another. İbrahim stated that ISIS viewed Turkey as an ally and the two entities collaborated numerous times in the past, so a war between Turkey and ISIS would never break out.

'TRANSPORTATION WAS CARRIED OUT THROUGH GIRE SPI'

İbrahim highlighted the importance of the Girê Spî border gate for ISIS and said that the majority of supplies entered Syria through here. İbrahim said that ISIS used the Girê Spî border gate and secret underground tunnels to smuggle jihadists from all around the world into Syria, and the border gate served as ISIS’ lifeline because the majority of military and food supply transportation took place through here. İbrahim emphasized the friendly nature of Turkey-ISIS relations, and said that these relations continue today despite the YPG’s liberation of Girê Spî. İbrahim added that Turkey continues to send arms, ammunition and jihadists to ISIS mainly through Jarablus and Til Rai today, and the Turkish aid to ISIS decreased because the border between ISIS and Turkey got shorter.

    'TRANSPORTATION FROM TURKEY WAS OFFICIAL'

İbrahim stated that transportation from Turkey via Girê Spî, Jarablus and Til Ria was carried out officially, and nighttime was chosen in order to avoid coalition warplanes and press coverage. İbrahim said that couriers led the transportation of jihadists as part of the agreement ISIS had made with Turkey, and ISIS militants welcomed the incoming gangs 1 km away from the Turkish border and took them to Raqqa. İbrahim underlined that the Turkish state turned a blind eye to this route and never caused a problem, and the Turkish intelligence approved all of the border crossings.

‘JARABLUS AND THE REGION TO ITS SOUTHWEST ARE OPEN FOR US’

Captured ISIS gang İbrahim stated that ISIS sent petroleum, wheat and other materials to Turkey in exchange for arms, ammunition and supplies, and Jarablus became the only border with Turkey after the YPG’s liberation of Girê Spî. İbrahim said that Jarablus and the region to its southwest were open for ISIS, and the gangs have been using this area for logistical purposes. İbrahim noted that the YPG’s liberation of Girê Spî reduced the flow of goods and militants between ISIS and Turkey, but this flow continues today through Jarablus and Til Rai.

‘SENIOR ISIS MEMBERS IN CIVILIAN CLOTHES CARRIED OUT THE TRADE’

The captured gang stated that certain ISIS members were chosen to carry out the trade with Turkey, and hundreds of vehicles crossed the border everyday as part of this trade. İbrahim noted that ISIS gangs responsible for the trade with Turkey were senior administrators and wore civilian clothes, and ISIS sent petroleum, wheat and other materials to Turkey in exchange for arms, ammunition, supplies and the treatment of injured gangs in Turkish hospitals. İbrahim added that the trade between ISIS and Turkey became more secretive after the bombardment of petroleum tankers near the border and the exposure of Turkey-ISIS relations.

In both of these calculations I assume the structures being square, level and plumb. I think that's a reasonable thing. Obviously there will be slight deviations and errors compounded by a not so clear photo as well as the how of choosing lines of projection by eye.

    azimuth_zpskwv0ltrc.png

Nevertheless, such a derived Azimuth of 212.3 giving a time of 14.10 + and a derived Elevation giving a time of 14.00 + is an indication that this way of working out the time of a photo in a particular place on a particular day is useful. A number of more careful derivation may lead to more precise times, but to say this photo was taken about 14.05 seems to me to be reasonable. (Knowing when exactly it was taken would be helpful for confirmation though I doubt that information is readily available.)

    TSBD%20employees%20leaving_zps2andynjk.j

  5. Just for fun I calculated the time of the photo on post 93 using an online right angle calculator, a pythagoras theorem calculator and a us navy sun table calculator and found the time to be just past two o'clock.

    13:50 32.3 207.1
    14:00 31.3 209.6 < I found the elevation to be 31.5 degrees.
    14:10 30.2 212.0

This table also tells that the Azimuth (E of N) is 209.6+ at that time.

I can use that to double check. ie that must be the Azimuth as derived from the photo. I should also compute error margins. Later.

  6. What is more offensive, writing a poem that suggests that Turkey Dictator Erdogan is a murderous misogynistic beast or him killing, beating and imprisoning and denying access to medicine for Kurdish, children women and men (the most successful anti ISIS force) and similarly targeting their supporters?

What about Merkel phoning him to apologise and urging him to prosecute the poet while playing dumb on the crimes he is committing in Kurdistan, let alone his support for ISIS and their smuggling of oil and antiquities out of Syria?

Who is going to audit the 6bn given to the Turkish dictatorship in order to stem the flow of refugees?

What about the concentration camps being built to contain refugees in Turkey?

That money could have been given to Greece to end their debt slavery and finance job creation schemes to house refugees.

    edit typos

edit add : Why do various western countries including the US block the participation of the Syrian Kurds, the YPG and YPJ, liberators of Kobane, the most effective anti IS force in Syria (along with the Syrian army and allies) in spite of being regularly bombarded by Turkey, while accepting the participation of known chemical warfare users (uses chemicals to kill Kurds)?? Because of sponsor of ISIS, Dictator Erdogans' Turkeys' say so?

  7. MOSCOW, April 5. /TASS/. The command of Ukraine’s armed forces are moving their headquarters and control centers closer to the line of engagement in Donbass as part of preparations for an offensive, Eduard Basurin, a spokesman for the defense ministry of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), said on Tuesday.

"According to our reconnaissance, the headquarters and control centers of the 72nd and 128th brigades of the Ukrainian army are being moved from the rear of the Kiev’s force operation in Donbass closer to the line of engagement. This fact testifies that Ukraine’s military political command is getting prepared for further large-scale provocations," the Donetsk News Agency quoted him as saying.

The DPR defense ministry said earlier that the situation in the republic has deteriorated, with a total of 442 episodes of shelling by Ukrainian troops reported in the past day.

  8. Denounces Against Poroshenko Affect Creation of Alliance in Ukraine pdf_button.png printButton.png emailButton.png

Kiev, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) The publication of the so-called Panama Papers, with allegations of corruption against President Petro Poroshenko, decrease the chances of creating a new parliamentary coalition in Ukraine, said a member of the Parliament.

Svetlana Zalishchuk, deputy of the Petro Poroshenko block said that, in contrast to the government and parliament, the president seemed to be an institution that enjoyed relative credibility. The war of "all against all" is entering a new and dangerous phase. It is much less likely now to create a coalition without elections.

In response to denounces against the chocolate magnate-come-head of state, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine stated that it will not investigate the existence of offshore companies belonging to Poroshenko, because he is immune to prosecution by the supervisory body. [a corrupt junta usurps power from a government because of corruption and when evidence emerges the boss is corrupt he cannot be investigated for corruption?? wtf...]

However, the leader of the Radical Party, Oleg Lyashko, proclaimed on Monday that his faction in the legislature will initiate the procedure for a political accusation against Poroshenko.

The president began the restructuring of the assets of his monopoly Roshen by creating three companies abroad, denounced the journalist Anna Babinets in the investigative report The President's Double Life, broadcasted last Sunday on the Slidstvo Info TV program.

According to the available documentation, The President's Double Life showed that Petro Poroshenko is the sole owner of the assets of Prime Asset Partners Limited, founded by Poroshenko in August 2014.

Similarly, the sources stressed that the tycoon did not mention his new company abroad and the auxiliary corporations in his financial statements in 2014 or 2015, which is another violation of the law.

  9. UN, April 6. /TASS/. Western member states of the UN Security Council voted to block Russia’s proposal on the all-inclusive nature of the upcoming round of intra-Syrian talks, Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin said.

According to the Russian diplomat, a delegation from Ukraine, which is not a permanent UN Security Council member, also added its destructive share into the decision to block the Russian proposal.

Churkin said Moscow repeatedly expressed its concerns that Syrian Kurds were still not invited to take part in the Geneva talks on the ongoing conflict settlement, adding that "such stance contradicts UN Security Council’s resolutions in the inclusiveness of the political process in Syria."

"It seemed that our concerns were shared by all main partners," Churkin said. "We have submitted with the UN Security Council’s members a draft for media calling to provide a maximum representation of the inter-Syrian dialogue at the upcoming talks."

"We were surprised when the draft was blocked by some Western countries," he said. "The Ukrainian delegation also chipped in destructively."

  10. A book of significance

A book by Elier Ramírez and Esteban Morales analyzes attempts to normalize relations between the U.S. and Cuba during the administrations of Gerald Ford (1974-1977) and Jimmy Carter (1977-1981)

    Author: Piero Gleijeses | informacion@granma.cu

    f0011475.jpg
The book analyzes attempts at normalization during the Presidencies of Gerald Ford (1974-1977) and Jimmy Carter (1977-1981).

On a certain occasion President Raúl Castro stated, “We have been capable of making history but not of writing it.” The excellent book by Elier Ramírez and Esteban Morales, De la confrontación a los intentos de “normalización” (From confrontation to attempts at “normalization”) published by Editorial de Ciencias Sociales in 2014, constitutes an important step in filling this void.

The book, based on knowledge of U.S. and Cuban secondary sources, as well as a rich sample of U.S. documents and, exclusively, numerous Cuban documents, analyzes the attempts at normalization during the Presidencies of Gerald Ford (1974-1977) and Jimmy Carter (1977-1981). Both were the only episodes – prior to Obama’s Presidency – in which there was a serious attempt to normalize relations between the U.S. and Cuba. There was also an incipient attempt under Kennedy, which Ramírez and Morales describe in the first chapter of the book.

Under both Ford and Carter, Africa was, as the authors well explain, “the insurmountable obstacle” preventing normalization between the U.S. and Cuba. Negotiations were advancing in 1975, when Cuban troops arrived in Angola in defiance of the USSR – opposed to such a move – and challenged South Africa, which had invaded Angola and whose troops were approaching Luanda, Challenging, at the same time, the U.S. which was in shameless cahoots with Pretoria. Fidel decided to intervene because he knew that the victory of the Axis of Evil - Washington and Pretoria - would have meant the victory of apartheid and the strengthening of white rule over the peoples of Southern Africa. Fifteen years later, in an unusual outburst of honesty, Henry Kissinger, U.S. Secretary of State in 1975, recognized in the last volume of his memoirs that Cuba had acted on her own initiative, presenting the USSR with a fait accompli. Fidel, Kissinger said, “was probably the most genuine revolutionary leader then in power.”

Cuba saved Angola and the U.S. retaliated by stopping short the talks on normalizing relations. These were later resumed by Carter. Ramírez and Morales skillfully outline the talks between U.S. and Cuban officials in 1977-1978, using both Cuban and U.S. documents of the time, an exceptional feat that no other historian studying this episode has achieved, including the author of this article.

    The “good” Obama?

Much more is revealed by what Obama didn’t say in Havana, than the little he did, no matter how choice his words. This is the same Obama who could do much more given his Presidential powers and yet has not.

    Author: dario machado | internet@granma.cu

    march 30, 2016 09:03:35

LIKE many others, I followed the visit by Barack Obama to our country and experienced mixed feelings: on the one hand, the healthy patriotic and revolutionary pride of witnessing a U.S. president rectifying the policy toward Cuba and repeating on our own soil that the blockade must be ended, reaffirming respect for our sovereignty and independence, which we Cubans have earned with our sacrifice, our sweat, our blood, our history; and on the other hand, the danger posed by those who believe that with these lukewarm changes, the contradiction between the interests of U.S. imperialism and the Cuban nation has disappeared. But it was only after listening to his speech that Tuesday morning that I decided to write this, because, as Fidel warned over half a century ago, from now on everything will be more difficult.

Who could doubt the enormous complexity of U.S. society, where black and white analysis is of little value?

A turbulent history in which battles for independence against British colonialism and genocidal onslaughts against the indigenous population intermingle; an impetuous industrial development and a cruel internecine war that killed more than 600,000 human beings; paradigmatic creativity and inventiveness in science and technology and a warmongering and expansionist military apparatus of which Mexico and Cuba – to take just two examples from our region – have been nearby victims; a society with extraordinary cultural expressions in music, literature and film along with a messianism that does not honor those assets; industrious and enterprising citizens over whom, however, an imperialist state machinery rests heavy; the richest and the most indebted country in the world; the country that demands human rights of others and least respects them itself, as evidenced by over half a century of economic blockade against Cuba; a society in which violence serves as the guiding principle throughout its history.

In short, a country full of contractions in which it would be naive to think that the current rapprochement with Cuba is simply the result of the thinking, will and resourcefulness of Obama, and not an integral part of the interests of the real power in the U.S. - that of big business.

If Barack Hussein Obama had proven impractical to the powers that govern the U.S., it would have been very difficult for him to have been elected president in 2008 and reelected in 2011, and the change of policy toward Cuba would not have initiated.

This is the same Obama who just two months after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, sent tens of thousands of soldiers to Afghanistan; the same who has authorized hundreds of drone attacks that have killed hundreds of civilians in several countries across the world; the same who participated in the plot that destroyed Libya; he who has armed the so-called Syrian opposition strengthening the self-named Islamic State; he who approved the supply of arms to Kiev after the coup; the President behind the “Arab spring” of fatal consequences in that area of the world. This is the same Obama, as the poet would say, who could do nothing to surprise you.

In effect, there are two Obamas, a “good” one and a “bad” one. We’re not talking about a bipolar personality, but a single person, a career politician, who beyond his personal characteristics and history, his way of doing domestic politics, and even his individual inclinations, and his likely aim of leaving a legacy as the U.S. President who changed policy toward Cuba, he has always been and continues to be functional to the strategic interests of the powers that govern the U.S.

It must be recognized that he is a politician with charisma, stage presence, a sense of media opportunity, communication skills - probably the best and most capable at hand today to disguise the strategic objectives of U.S. imperialism toward Cuba, Latin America and the Caribbean.

During this visit to our country, President Obama did not miss any opportunity to call for an end to the blockade, which ultimately are the words of someone who will soon disappear from the U.S. government, phrases that he can state now, that he can claim responsibility for, as he does not aspire to, nor could he, run for another Presidential term. He can make this call as the formalities of the northern country's political system allow him to present himself as someone with no responsibility* whatsoever for the blockade, as someone opposed to the blockade, as the advocate of a new policy, when for almost all of his term he endorsed the blockade with his inertia.

But back to his deficient speech. Since a thorough analysis can not be undertaken in a short article [1], I will only highlight some aspects that stand out at first glance while, as expressed by various analysts, much more is revealed by what he didn’t say, than the little he did, no matter how choice his words. This is the same Obama who could do much more given his Presidential powers and yet has not.

This is precisely the point, to read between the lines of his statements, which is important especially for young people whose lived experiences of this northern neighbor do not include criminal sabotage, Playa Girón, the October crisis, counterrevolutionary groups, attacks against our leaders, biological aggression, and so on, and for whom the effects of the blockade have been mitigated by the protection offered by society and their families.

There is no doubt: Obama is the gentle and seductive face of the same danger. He made no apology for crimes against Cuba, he did not mention the Guantánamo Naval Base, he did not speak of the Cuban Adjustment Act, he did not explain why he hasn’t done more to dismantle the blockade, given the powers he possesses to do so, and there were many other incredible omissions.

Meanwhile, it was clear that he does not want to cooperate with Cuba, but rather with that part of our society which offers the best conditions for the strategic interests he represents. He hoped to seduce youth, encourage selfishness and the thirst for purely individual improvement, presenting capitalist growth as a universal panacea and not the cause of the crises, or the danger of the destruction of the environment and the disappearance of the human species. He hoped to contribute to the fragmentation of Cuban society in order to recover U.S. hegemony here and in our region. In his speech the conceited tone of someone who “grants us the right” – that no one need grant us – “to solve our own problems” was evident. We must now explain and demonstrate this.

Obama's visit is a victory of the Cuban people and all peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, as it demonstrates that the United States of America has been forced to recognize that it was thwarted by our dignity, and has now chosen to concoct a detour. As such, we should recall the words of Julius Fučík at the end of its historical Report from the gallows and “be vigilant”.

Obama concluded his visit to Cuba. He was – along with his beautiful family for whom Cubans have a natural affection – welcomed, treated and bid farewell politely by a people and authorities who are proud of their hospitality, respect and willingness to dialogue without impositions, but whose majorities are well aware of the land on which they stand, and are bursting with the sovereign spirit of Martí and Fidel, that spirit which was evident as the entire Latinoamericano Stadium chanted: “Raúl, Raúl, Raúl…”

[1] In a book due to be published by the Editorial de La Mujer de La Habana, I dedicate an entire chapter to analysis of Obama’s speech at the White House on December 17, 2014, aspects of which I take up again here.

  12. Karayılan: Historic spring process begins

    Tuesday, March 29, 2016 12:40 PM
    BEHDINAN - ANF

Kurdistan People’s Defense Forces Central Headquarters Commander Murat Karayılan addressed guerrillas on the 30th year anniversary of Mahsum Korkmaz’s (Commander Egîd) martyrdom.

Karayılan addressed guerrillas based in South and North Kurdistan via long-distance transmitters, and emphasized the importance of Mahsum Korkmaz for the Kurdistan Freedom Movement. Regarding the urban resistance in Kurdistan and recent AKP policies, Karayılan said that Kurdistan guerrillas should put the historic spring process to use and the Kurdish people would come out victorious at the end of this process. Karayılan recalled people’s demands for the HPG to make an intervention during spring months. Below are some of the headlines of Murat Karayılan’s recent statements:

‘EGÎD IS THE SYMBOL OF SUCCESS AND THE SPIRIT OF ATTACK’

30 years have passed since the martyrdom of our great commander Egîd. The struggle of comrade Egîd entered a new and crucial phase recently. We commemorate comrade Egîd on the 30th year anniversary of his martyrdom, and repeat our promise to him and all other revolutionary martyrs of Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Freedom Struggle will honor their memories by reaching success.

Comrade Egîd was a spirit, a stance, and a way of becoming a commander. But above all, he was the symbol of success and attack. 32 years ago, on 15 August 1984, 32 people led by commander Egîd began their march for freedom. Their struggle has made history, and comrade Egîd has tens of thousands of soldiers and millions of followers.

‘ERDOĞAN WILL LOSE, JUST LIKE HOW KENAN EVREN LOST’

When the August 15 initiative took place, Kenan Evren, the president of Turkey back then, stated that the perpetrators would be caught and brought to justice within 72 hours no matter where they hid. However, 32 years have passed and the march of that little group has grown into a movement of tens of thousands of guerrillas and millions of people. The side that lost during this process has been Turkish colonialism based on denial, authoritarianism and assimilation. They thought that they could defeat our movement through their use of NATO power and organization of international conspiracies, but our movement is at its strongest. The Kurdistan Freedom Movement is one of the major actors in the Middle East, and the resistance spirit of Kurdistan guerrillas in the mountains has spread over to the youth in plains and urban centers. Erdoğan will fail to produce results and experience defeat, just like Kenan Evren who failed to finish the guerrilla movement within 72 hours. In the fall of 2015, AKP colonialism had claimed that the resistance in urban areas would end within a month. However, the fire of urban resistance has not beet put out over the last 7 months.

Today, Erdoğan knows that he cannot defeat the guerrillas of Kurdistan but he wages war on our movement in order to strengthen its power. Under the pretense of ‘providing public order,’ the Turkish state tried to exert dominance in urban areas this winter. They also tried to damage and weaken us in the mountains, so that our capabilities would be limited in the spring of 2016. However, they have failed. It is true that they attacked Medya Defense Zones and North Kurdistan in many different ways, but their attacks failed. They tried to weaken our forces in Shengal with the support of certain forces in South Kurdistan, but Kurdistan Freedom Guerrillas defeated their plans and played an important role in the liberation of Shengal. Our guerillas have even successfully liberated the strategic location of Medîban without any aerial support. Today, Kurdistan Freedom Forces play a fundamental role in the liberation of Mosul and Til Afer.

Turkey also tried to siege the revolution in Rojava diplomatically, Erdoğan even said ‘Us or them’ regarding this issue. They tried to make international powers object to Rojava Revolution, but they failed miserably and the revolution grew and took the vital step of declaring North Syria Federation with the support of Arab people in the region.

'AKP IS SCARED BECAUSE IT IS GUILTY'

Its diplomatic and military failures, coupled with our people’s growing urban resistance, scares the AKP. This is why all AKP officials say that they are not scared in their press statements. They tried to bring us to kneel last year, and now they say that they are not scared and would not be brought to kneel. We know that they are scared of us, they are scared of the reality of Kurdistan because they are guilty. They burned unarmed civilians in Cizre and destroyed Kurdish cities, they are scared because of their crimes against humanity.

'MARTYRS OF SUR AND CİZRE PAVE THE WAY FOR VICTORY'

When the Turkish army started attacking urban resistance, we warned that we would intervene if the army waged a war in the cities. They used tanks and destroyed cities as they attacked young people who were only using shotguns and Kalashnikovs. Their true aim was to destroy Kurdish cities, and they tried to bring our people and youth to kneel with their cowardly attacks.

However, the resistance in Sur and Cizre against colonial attacks was historic. It is true that we have martyrs, but these martyrs pave the way for victory. This spirit is the spirit of our times. It is possible to reach results if we have this spirit, take lessons from previous practices, and have a diverse tactical approach.

    'HPG SHOULD NOW INTERVENE'

Spring has come, the HPG should now intervene. However, this intervention should not be in the form of entering urban areas. It should be in the form of supporting the self-defense resistance of Kurdish youth under the umbrella of YPS from the mountains. The HPG action in Mermer military post is a successful step in this direction, and the HPG should be active in rural areas in order to show solidarity with the resistance in urban areas. The HPG would not intervene if the army had not attacked urban areas, but we have to intervene since the Turkish army mobilized its forces against the Kurdish youth in cities. There was no need for such a war, and the issue of trenches would have been resolved if the state had responded to the issue differently.

Our people’s demand for autonomy is a universal right. Different cultures and languages coexist in the world through the formula of autonomy. Kurdish people’s demand for autonomy is appropriate, and the resistance against the attacks on our people’s demand is a resistance of democracy and freedom. The struggle for autonomy in Kurdistan democratizes Turkey, but the HPG should support the resistance against the Turkish state’s attacks on autonomy demands with tanks and artillery.

'FREEDOM OF LEADER APO IS THE ONLY SOLUTION PATH'

Turkish state officials should know that they cannot win this war. Cities, mountains and plains are all sites of resistance. They should see this reality. The Erdoğan regime should stop killing Turkish and Kurdish youth, and agree to a solution. The freedom of Leader Apo and the autonomy of Kurdish people is the only solution path, and there is no alternative option.

    'WE ARE BOUND TO SUCCEED'

A historic spring period is underway and we enter the spring with great opportunities. We are at our strongest, and we can take advantage of these opportunities and carry out appropriate actions. It is important for our guerrillas to prepare themselves. Our guerrillas did not receive a critical blow this winter and we believe that they prepared themselves sufficiently. We trust in our guerrillas just like Leader Apo trusts in our people.

We are bound to succeed in this period. Our goals are clear; “Free Leadership, Autonomous Kurdistan, Democratic Turkey.” There won’t be any peaceful resolution without the freedom of Leader Apo. We must come up with the most creative tactics and fulfill our duties in order to ensure our leader’s freedom. We believe that w will achieve great results if our guerrillas carry out actions with determination. On this basis, we wish success to our guerrillas and believe that they will yield great results when they act with the spirit of our heroic comrade Egîd.

MOSCOW, March 30. /TASS/. Ukrainian forces have moved artillery, heavy weaponry, ammunition and volunteer battalions to the contact line on Gorlovka and Mariupol directions, the spokesman for defense ministry of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Eduard Basurin said on Wednesday.

"DPR intelligence continues registering movement and build-up of military weaponry along the contact line," Donetsk News Agency quoted Basurin as saying.

He noted that Ukrainian forces moved five self-propelled artillery systems, three Grad multiple-launch rocket systems, six infantry fighting vehicles, ammunition and five Kamaz trucks to the settlements of Zaytsevo, Novogorodskoye, Mayorsk and Mirnoye.

Basurin also said that the situation near Yasinovataya to the north of Donetsk has considerably deteriorated lately. "Ukraine has started using heavy weaponry on DPR territory more often, including artillery of 152mm caliber, and the situation in the region deteriorated," the spokesman concluded.

  14. A new trove of documents, obtained by an RT Documentary crew who recently uncovered details of illicit ISIS oil business with Turkey, sheds light on jihadists’ lucrative trade of looted antiquities along their well-established oil and weapons transit routes.

There is no official accounting that would illustrate the true scale of looting being undertaken in Syria, a land once rich with cultural treasures. However, there is no doubt that since radical Islamists established a foothold in the region under raging civil war, pieces of the world’s global heritage have ended up in the hands of terrorists.

READ MORE: ‘Pearl of the desert’: RT visits liberated ancient ruins of Palmyra (DRONE FOOTAGE)

Along with oil smuggling, a lucrative trade in antiquities has become ISIS’s source of income to support its devastating operations, many of which leveled unique historic sites such as Palmyra. Artifacts, some worth thousands of dollars apiece, have been turning up in antique markets from eastern Europe to the US.

Following the exposure of the details of the ISIS oil business, RT has exclusively obtained additional evidence that sheds light on the jihadists’ black market of plundered treasures and its transit routes via Turkey.

According to a document that the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) turned over to an RT Documentary crew, the so-called Ministry of Natural Resources established by ISIS to hold grip of the oil operations has a separate “Department of Artifacts.”

“One of the new documents is a note that has the same letterhead of ISIS’s Ministry of Natural Resources as the oil bills of sale, which we discussed last time,” a reporter, whose name and face have been obscured for security reasons, explained. The letterhead, similar to those found on oil invoices that Kurdish soldiers seized from what used to be the homes of IS fighters, is visible in the upper-right corner of the newly obtained document.

The note, apparently addressed to checkpoint sentries, asks “brothers at the border” to allow a Turkish antiquity seller into Syria for the purposes of mutual profit. It reads:

“To the brother responsible for the border, Please assist the passage of brother Hussein Hania Sarira through your post along with the man from Turkey – the artifacts trader, for the purpose of working with us in the department of artifacts in the Ministry of Natural Resources. May Allah bless you, Loving brother Abu Uafa At-Tunisi.”

While filming in the town of Shaddadi, located in the Syrian province Hasakah, RT reporters came across archaeological pieces, fragments of various ceramic pots. Abandoned in a tunnel, which ISIS fighters fled through, they were discovered by the Kurdish YPG troops after they liberated Shaddadi from jihadists in the summer of 2015.

  15. Why Turkey must free Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan

Millions of Kurds view Abdullah Öcalan as their political representative. His freedom is directly linked to a democratic and peaceful solution to the war in Turkey.

Wounded people trapped in basements, civilians burned alive, children shot on the streets, dead women's bodies stripped naked for display — the Turkish state and army is engaged in a mass-murderous war, not on the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants, but on the civilian Kurdish population in front of the eyes of the international community, which does not dare to even condemn the atrocities.

Seventeen years after Öcalan, the leader of the PKK, was captured in 1999, civil war is tearing northern Kurdistan and Turkey apart.

Well-aware of Öcalan's power to direct politics in war and peace, the Turkish state has been isolating him completely from the outside world since April 2015, before the parliamentary elections and the massive escalation of the war, which violently marked the end of the two-and-a-half-year long peace process initiated by Öcalan.

After being forced out of Syria due to Turkish pressure, Öcalan first tried to seek asylum in Europe and was pressured out of Italy by the threats of EU countries, which sided with their NATO partner Turkey.

On his way to South Africa, Öcalan was kidnapped in Kenya and renditioned to Turkey in a furious collaboration of several secret services, including the CIA. His final destination, and home ever since, has been the prison island İmralı.

Referring to him as “baby killer,” the Turkish media launched a massive propaganda campaign showing a drugged, semi-conscious Öcalan in an attempt to ridicule the Kurdish struggle by humiliating its leader.

This day is regarded as “Roja Resh” (Black Day) by millions of Kurds to this day. On countless occasions, Kurds made it clear that Öcalan's freedom is directly linked to freedom and peace in Kurdistan and Turkey.

Although Öcalan has many times expressed his denunciation of this act, more than 100 people have self-immolated to protest his imprisonment.

Öcalan has on countless occasions emphasised the importance of dialogue and negotiation, announcing several unilateral ceasefires. In 2009, on the day that marked the 25th anniversary of the PKK's armed struggle, he finished the “Road Map to Negotiations.” His historic Newroz statement in 2013 effectively ended a war and announced the era to “silence the weapons and let the ideas and politics speak”.

His renewed isolation is a calculated war tool used by Turkey to weaken the Kurds psychologically, as well as to legitimise its limitless killing spree on the civilian population.

    The “European Guantanamo”: İmralı Island

For the first 11 years of his imprisonment, Öcalan was the only prisoner on İmralı. No less than 1,000 soldiers were guarding his cell. His initial sentence was death for high treason, but three years after his capture, the death penalty was abolished in Turkey due to pressure from the EU, which Turkey desperately wanted to enter at the time.

An atmosphere of psychological harassment and torture dictates the security regime of İmralı. Öcalan receives only censored information from the outside and was denied any human contact, including handshakes for years.

Thousands of Kurdish activists, both in Europe and in Turkish prisons, engaged in several hunger strikes, some of them up to 68 days, to raise awareness of Öcalan's conditions. Only after these hunger strikes drew attention to evidence that Öcalan was being slowly poisoned, the EU's anti-torture watchdog, the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, agreed to examine Öcalan's health in 2007. İmralı violates human rights with impunity, which has led some to call it the “Guantanamo of Europe.”

Öcalan has been denied access to his lawyers since 2011 and his family since 2014. His lawyers are constantly harassed, threatened and jailed. Political delegations were able to visit Öcalan in brief meetings in the framework of the peace process initiated by him. For almost a year, he has been totally isolated — anything could have happened to him.

Daily vigils in front of the European Council in Strasbourg have been held for Öcalan's freedom since mid-2012. Every week, a different group of activists camps out in front of the council. In a tireless worldwide campaign, led by the international initiative “Freedom for Öcalan – Peace in Kurdistan,” more than 10.3 million signatures have been collected for his freedom. Signatories include Noam Chomsky, Arundhati Roy, Jeremy Corbyn and Antonio Negri, as well as many parliamentarians, authors, thinkers and activists.

As hundreds of thousands of activists across the world marched for his freedom this year, activist and former lawyer of Nelson Mandela, Judge Essa Moosa, led an international delegation to İmralı to request a meeting with Öcalan to re-initiate the peace process.

Moosa said, “We believe Öcalan can play a very important role for the resolution of the Kurdish question in Turkey, in the same way President Nelson Mandela did in South Africa.”

While the Turkish state enjoys the support of NATO and EU countries, Öcalan does not even have proper access to the media. It is impossible to negotiate a solution to a four decades-old conflict in isolation. In the words of Mandela: “No man can negotiate in chains!”

Not only does Öcalan continue to be seen as the political voice of millions of oppressed Kurds, he is also an intellectually impactful person who authored at least 40 books, many of them while in prison.

His philosophical views underwent a massive paradigm shift, illustrating remarkable intellectual creativity and willpower despite suffering inhumane conditions. Öcalan heavily criticised himself and his own party for authoritarian practices in its initial stages. He publicly apologised for many actions. His analysis of the nature of power, patriarchy, the global economic order, nation-states and ecological issues, not only gained him even more support among Kurds, but more recently engaged radical thinkers and movements around the world.

Although only a few of his books have been translated into European languages, many people began to engage with his thought, from Latin American grassroots-movements to progressive leftist groups in the Middle East to women around the world.

In the last few years, people like Immanuel Wallerstein and David Graeber wrote forewords to his books, while thinkers like David Harvey, Slavoj Žižek and John Holloway expressed the immense value of Öcalan's writings for radical change in the Middle East beyond Kurdistan.

The fact that Öcalan's proposals resonate with so many groups across the world obviously threatens the ideology of the Turkish state and its accomplices.

Recently Resat Baris Ünlü, a Turkish professor at Ankara University was charged for promoting terrorism when he posed an exam question on the development of Öcalan's thought to his students. The prosecutors perceived this question as dangerous and subversive because it “legitimises” Öcalan's thinking and suggests that he is a political leader.

Much has been written about Öcalan's “democratic confederalism” as an alternative to the nation-state, a system that is currently being implemented in different parts of Kurdistan, most notably in Rojava.

However, to many people who understand his position solely as a charismatic leader, the emotional meaning that millions of Kurds attach to him is incomprehensible.

Thousands of people spent time with him in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon and in Damascus. Countless ordinary people received his education and got to know him closely.

Unlike corrupt, wealthy Kurdish leaders that are selected by Western governments and states like Turkey as the “true representatives” of the Kurds, Öcalan is the son of a poor family and led a very modest life throughout his leadership. His claims about leading a people's movement were reinforced by his lifestyle and approach to the people.

Especially for women, Öcalan has always been a comrade — he never viewed them as lovers, mothers, sisters or daughters, but as themselves. He always emphasised that women are the most democratic force and that the struggle for freedom will be led by the women's revolution.

Many of the women who now fight against the Islamic State group joined the struggle after having met him and having been influenced by his respect and faith in women's power and his profound analysis of patriarchy, from the Kurdish family to the global system.

In Rojava, where a women-led social revolution is underway, many elderly women keep old photos of educationals and assemblies with Öcalan like treasures, as they vow to defeat the Islamic State group by organising the strength of women. They say that the women's revolution of Rojava began with his arrival decades ago. Kobanê was his first destination.

With his theoretical writings and practice, as well as his unconditional support for women, the Kurdish women's movement has today become one of the most dynamic and radical forces of change in the Middle East.

Few leaders would have managed to convince millions of people to opt for radical democracy instead of a nation-state, while centring their liberation discourse on the power of women, re-initiating peace and reconciliation with all peoples of the Middle East, while making ecology a central ideological pillar in the fight for freedom.

Öcalan has created a community of millions of strong-willed, courageous and determined individuals, with a political project that has become a shining light of hope for peace in the Middle East. This faith in the community is what draws people to him.

His leadership produces and reproduces an entire self-determining society of leaders, with women at the forefront. The democratic autonomy and self-administration struggles accompanied by fearless resistance in different parts of Kurdistan are the practical manifestation of this.

In spite of all the attempts to isolate Öcalan from the Kurdish people, it remains undisputed, even by his biggest enemies, that he is considered the political representative by millions of Kurds. The renewed total isolation at this time of war illustrates that one of the biggest threats to the Turkish state is his voice. In that sense, in the words of Huey Newton: “You can jail a revolutionary, but you can't jail the revolution.”

    Free Öcalan!

  16. At first look I think you need to establish the angle between true north and line A-B. (triangle abc horizontal) This plus the angle between line A-B and line A-C gives the westward angle of the sun. The angle between X-Y and Y-Z gives the elevation of the sun and a sun chart of the date, lat, long, will give the time of day.

(I think. Prob use some wrong words but thats roughly it. If the people weren't there the shadow would be along the red line. Not including minor things like column plinths etc.)

    lat_zps3dnd7ryq.jpg

    edit add: a few corrections.

A bit quick off the mark there. You need to establish true north. The variation of it and the line ab (which may be a subtraction or addition to angle between ab and ac) and adding 180 degrees gives degrees west to sun. The angle of elevation is along the sight to sun rather than at angle of wall as marked. The 'idea' is right but there's not enough info on that pic to say. ** Need to zoom out or find another pic taken at same time.

    edit 2 add : **

    P to T = 2 x step depth (tread)

ZZ to T is knowable as is YY to p being measurable fractions of fixed distances, therefore ZZ to YY is knowable as fourth side in shape (orange)

    XX to ZZ = S to T = 3 x step height (rise)

and thus angle o as sun elevation is knowable, hence time
