I grew up in sweden with parents and relatives fluent in german. For me, this link helped me to realise how beautifully expressive german can be rather than the somewhat harsh complexity I grew up with as a listener but not understanding, tho, I can decode much german just because swedish (and english) is of the germanic language family. Otherwise, Ich bin eine auslander. Nicht forsten, (I am an outlander, not understanding, Jag är en utländare, inte förstå) I hope further contributions will be forthcoming.
