THE FORUM GOALS IN 2015 & LANCER FORUM ARCHIVES ACQUISITION

9 posts in this topic

LANCER ARCHIVES:

We are delighted to announce that The Education Forum has recently acquired the rights to host the archives from the JFK Lancer Forum, and we thank Debra Conway for that! Unfortunately, those archives have been subject to hacker attack, so we may need professional help to retrieve them prior to their becoming available to access through The Education Forum.

MEMBER BOOKSTORE:

The Education Forum also has plans to add a Bookstore to the Forum! Our purpose will be to allow the authors on The Education Forum to sell their books through our site, as well as members to buy and sell their used JFK books from their personal libraries. This is NOT a profit-making venture for The Education Forum, but merely a service through which transactions between sellers and buyers can be facilitated.

As you may be aware, The Education Forum is currently operated as a forum funded by the contributions of its users. At this time, we are appealing once more for contributions in order to continue to provide this forum and its vast archives, hopefully in perpetuity. But to do so does require funds in order to cover internet hosting fees and related expenses. NO INDIVIDUAL makes a monetary profit from the operation of The Education Forum. In the spirit of our founding members, we continue to offer the content at The Education Forum as a FREE resource, and will always do so, as long as we possibly can.

2015 will begin a new year, and if we can fully retrieve the archives from the JFK Lancer forum, we'll have even more content to offer our members! Our membership is increasing, and many of our longtime Forum members are returning, offering their insights on the ongoing discussions here at The Education Forum. YOUR input is what powers The Education Forum....but it's also YOUR contributions that continue to make The Education Forum available on the internet.

Please visit the donation tab on the index page, and give what you can to allow this valuable resource that is The Education Forum to continue. There is no minimum contribution level, so we ask only that you give what you can. For those of you who have previously contributed, we offer our thanks for helping us keep this Forum available. Your gift is important, whether it's large or small. So won't you take a moment while you're already here and make your contribution to we can continue The Education Forum? Thank you for your help and your generosity, and we look forward to an exciting time with expanded offerings for you in the coming year...and beyond! We need YOU to keep The Education Forum alive, intact...and GROWING!"

Warmest wishes to all of you in the New Year,

The Ed Forum Team

This is great news for the Forum: getting Lancer's archives and adding a member bookstore. Congratulations and appreciation to Kathy and the other members in administration who are making this possible.

I plan to make a donation in the not too distant future.

Thank you, Kathy.

I like the idea of being able to retrieve the old posts from the JFK-Lancer forum.

Archive.org has saved many Lancer pages (such as this one), but not nearly all of them. It will be a nice addition to the Education Forum if the full Lancer archive can be retrieved and made available here.

In the six months I have been impressed in the change that this forum has undergone. Back in the summer, hours would pass before a member logged on. Then, the forum was busy if two or three members were logged any one time. Maybe the new administration has helped there, but the real change is the membership of this forum. You are what has made the difference in these past months. This is a forum that is now a hive of activity. I understand that within the last twenty four hours four new members have joined us.

Acquiring of the Lancer archive is a great honour. Debs Conway is very proud of JFK Lancer and all it has achieved. It speaks volumes about what Debs thinks about the Education Forum that she would entrust the archive to us. Nor is it just the archive we have been entrusted with: we have been given the content of the entire website including the the files for the design of the new JFK Lancer site, had it been resurrected. We have been given absolutely everything. It may take a little time to get it back up and running, but it will be worth it.

The achievements of the past few months and the renewed energy of fellow members are why we are all very proud of you. You have all demonstrated why it was imperative that this site was rescued. Such enthusiasm bodes well for 2015. One thing we should see live and linked to the Education Forum in 2015 is the complete JFK Lancer web site.

Happy New Year everyone.

James

Kathy,

Do you have an update on this? Thank you and James, and the others in the background, for your efforts here.

As regards the Lancer Archives there has been an update. The damage done is too extensive to repair to present archive. If the archives are to be restored, then the archive will have to be rebuilt from scratch. Damaged though the archive is, we have been informed it can be completely and fully restored.

It will be expensive and I am looking into options to fund this. Unless an insurmountable problem surfaces that makes it impossible to complete the project, I expect it to be rebuilt and it be provided as another resource to members.

That said, it would be helpful if members could assist with contributions towards the cost.

James.

A short summary of several threads:

The Education Forum administrators are now the guardians of the admittedly "important" JFK Lancer archive.

Unfortunately that archive had been hacked.

The archive files and data were considerably damaged.

A professional web company would restore the archive.

It was decided to launch the restored archive on November 22, 2015.

Donations were being sought for this costly undertaking.

Questions:

1. Has the JFK Lancer archive been restored yet?

2. Will the launch of this archive still be taking place on November 22, 2015?

3. If the archive has been restored, why wait until November 22? It would seem to make more sense to launch this "important" and long missing archive right now rather than trying to tie it in with the "November in Dallas" conference.

4. If the archive hasn't been restored yet, then what is its current status?

Questions:

1. Has the JFK Lancer archive been restored yet?
No.
2. Will the launch of this archive still be taking place on November 22, 2015?
Unlikely.
3. If the archive has been restored, why wait until November 22? It would seem to make more sense to launch this "important" and long missing archive right now rather than trying to tie it in with the "November in Dallas" conference.
It is an academic question. But had it been restored by now we would probably still wait until November 2015, that was our initial decision.
4. If the archive hasn't been restored yet, then what is its current status?
The current status is awaiting the necessary funds to complete the job. The quote is $3,900 to undertake the work professional and ensure that all data is recovered and nothing is lost. We are presently awaiting the funds to complete the work. This work will be completed - we made a promise to Debra that we would do so and we will keep that promise. It is possible it will be the summer of 2016 before it will be completed. The EF is determined that a complete and professional restoration will be undertaken. We are aware the archive is full of important historical research.
