New Details Uncovered in 1972 Disappearance
of Congressman Hale Boggs

By Jonathan Walczak

Forty years ago yesterday, Hale Boggs, a powerful Democratic congressman with a
colorful past, disappeared in a small plane over Alaska. The massive search that ensued
turned up no leads, and the plane, along with the bodies of Boggs and three others who
died, remains hidden somewhere in the wilderness.

Boggs -- who served on the Warren Commission, accused the FBI of tapping
congressional phones, and called for J. Edgar Hoover's resignation -- was the majority
leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. Seattle and the rest of the country were
captivated as the government sent out dozens of planes and ships to find him, but
search efforts failed. In the years that followed, conspiracy theories flourished, in part
because of his connections to the Kennedy assassination and the FBI, and in part
because no trace of the plane ever surfaced.

To mark the anniversary of Boggs' disappearance, Seattle Weekly made Freedom of
Information requests to eight government agencies and reviewed more than 1,500
pages of documents. While none of the records get us closer to knowing why and where
Boggs' plane went down, they do paint a fuller picture of the his life before the crash -
including an incident in which he was run off the road by an unknown driver in
Washington, D.C., in 1970 - and unveil possible ties between the Nixon White House and
an anonymous tipster who claimed to know where Boggs' plane crashed.

Among the findings:

- Amid hundreds of pages in Boggs' FBI file is a single sheet of information that has
apparently never been reported. Around 11:30 p.m. on July 23, 1970, two years before
he disappeared, Boggs was driving in Washington, D.C., when a late model Lincoln
Continental forced him off the road. He gave chase and was able to take down a license
plate number. No additional information is available in the file, and the D.C. Metropolitan
Police Department, which investigated the incident, told the Weekly that it could not
locate any relevant records.

- Immediately after Boggs disappeared, the U.S. Coast Guard station in Long Beach,
Calif., received a call from an individual who claimed to know where the plane crashed.
The tipster said he had access to experimental electronic equipment, and he provided
detailed directions to the wreck. The FBI apparently found him credible, with one agent,
whose name is redacted, stating his opinion that the "source of aforementioned
information is reliable."

Though this tip has previously been reported, the Weekly uncovered new details on the
tipster, who is described as a "white male, about thirty five, six foot three inches, two
hundred and fifteen pounds, hair black, who apparently has injured left arm." He also
appears to have served in the military.

But the most interesting piece of information is the tipster's phone number, which was
not redacted in the FBI file. The number, 378-5243, was provided by the Long Beach
Coast Guard station. Since no area code was specified, the tipster presumably had the
same one as the station, "213."

A hunt for information on the number (213) 378-5243 turns up a solitary reference in an
obscure congressional document from 1974. In that record, a report on a congressional
hearing that examined the possibility of amending the Constitution to protect unborn
children, the number is listed as belonging to Right to Life, an anti-abortion group
founded in 1969. Right to Life, which claimed to be America's first pro-life organization,
provided an address in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.

Interestingly enough, one of the 12 founders of Right to Life was James Francis
McIntyre, the Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles from 1948-70, who knew President
Richard Nixon.

Seattle Weekly was unable to track down an old phone book to determine whether the
organization had the same number in 1972, when Boggs disappeared, as it did in 1974,
when it surfaced in the congressional report.

But if the number was the same, why would someone associated with an pro-life
organization, founded in part by a powerful bishop connected to President Nixon, claim
to have inside knowledge on the disappearance on an influential Democratic
congressman?

The FBI file shows that agents who interviewed the tipster were advised "that should
[they] believe [redacted] are involved in a covert type operation, then it should be
suggested to them that if they doubted the seriousness of the matter they should
contact their 'principals' for further advice." Essentially, the FBI directed its agents to
evaluate whether they thought the source was a spy. Once interviewed, the tipster,
according to the report, "appeared rational, extremely intelligent, but somewhat
strange." The FBI file sheds no additional light on his identity.

- In the days that followed Boggs' disappearance, several independent ham radio
operators in Northern California said they spoke with or heard a transmission from
someone on the plane after it crashed, who told them that there were survivors.

- The day after Boggs vanished, according to the FBI file, a search plane picked up a
signal "believed to be that of a crash locator beacon for approximately 40 minutes some
distance from Juneau, however, search planes were unable to pinpoint the source of the
signal."

In addition to Boggs (whose daughter is journalist Cokie Roberts), three others
disappeared: Nick Begich, the father of current U.S. Sen. Mark Begich; Russell Brown,
an aide to Begich; and Don Jonz, the plane's pilot.

Four decades after the plane vanished, plenty of questions remain: Did the mysterious
tipster have accurate information on the crash? Did the ham radio operators really talk
with survivors? Who ran Boggs off the road in 1970?

For now, the wreck remains untouched somewhere in the Alaskan wilds.

There is even more to this story... if you google hale boggs plane crash, you should easily find the mother of all black operations blogspot, where Dr. Nick Begich talks about FBI telexes concerning the crash.

be sure to watch his 7-minute video interview. Two people survived the crash, about 250 miles northwest of Juneau. Civilian-sector technicians, using sophisticated experimental surveillance equipment- technology that could pick out brain signals in the Alaskan wilderness- contacted the Coast Guard. In the related FBI telex, "(deleted) stated that this information may be significant, and suggests passengers had departed downed plane".

Also of interest is that this site's article alleges that "a young Bill Clinton had been chosen to drive Hale Boggs to the airport on the day that Boggs' plane would later be reported as missing."

Scott,

Thanks for the Aircraft Accident Report. What popped out at me was that the 100-hour inspection was completed on October 15th, up in Fairbanks, the day before the Cessna disappeared. It was apparently performed by employees of Pan Alaska Airways. The pilot, who was president of Pan Alaska, flew from Fairbanks to Anchorage the night of the 15th, and picked up Hale Boggs, Nick Begich & Russ Brown the morning of the 16th. The Report said it "cannot exclude the possibility of an in-flight malfunction or catastrophic component failure."

Poor weather was blamed, but the pilot was very experienced and chose to fly by Visual Flight Rules. I've been to Anchorage International 6 times and also flown in bush planes w/ pontoons in & out from Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians, wind or fog can materialize from out of nowhere, but anybody who flies in that terrain has to be top-notch.

The Washington publication Roll Call was investigating congressional deaths and found the FBI telexes through a Freedom of Information Act request. At the bottom was written- "Additional handling instructions: Information contained herein is not to be repeated or released to press or public at any time."

Clinton had given Boggs a ride to a Texas airport on the 15th, and Boggs flew to D.C. and connected with a flight to Anchorage. Eldest son Dr. Nick Begich gives a few more details in this 10-minute video:

You're welcome,

I really like this guy, I especially like how he get's himself "emotionally involved," someone who shoots from the hip, lay's it all out. I suppose because he is the son of his father who had a tragic accident/murder? Some folks wouldn't understand, if he shows too much emotion, he's discredited by the intellectuals. Now, this is good stuff, thanks for posting the video. The passage I meant about Clinton is if you were to read what was originally posted made it sound as if Clinton gave Boggs a ride to the Pan Alaskan Airport in Anchorage where he boarded the plane. Clinton giving him a ride to the airport in Texas didn't kill Boggs on his way to Fairbanks.

Thanks Don,
Hmm, mildly interesting. I covered most of this on Lancer. Did some interviews, wrote it up.
But new stuff turns up,,,

excellent profit and "cause" potentials, please contact Michael Engler at

An actual 1972 Palos Verdes Estates phone directory may take an trip to an CA library ... but this is likely solvable.

Engler has since moved; I have his current phone number. His picture fits the estimated age of the FBI tipster, he looks about 75 these days, and is shown on page 5 in a 2011 in a Knights of Columbus bulletin for a one-page article he wrote- "Hungary Adopts New Pro-Life, Pro-Marriage Constitution". If the following URL does not connect, try googling Knights Columbus bulletin 5300 to get www.kc5300.org/ and add on the rest of the information- 1684/docs/2011/Sep-Oct2011CouncilBulletin.pdf

https://www.kc5300.org/1684/docs/2011/Sep-Oct2011CouncilBulletin.pdf

Engler is also listed in correspondence from 1979-1986 among the papers of noted teacher and Benedictine monk Paul Marx, who founded the Human Life Center in 1971 and taught at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. So the big question is- what's a guy like him doing with top-secret technology, using it to locate Boggs' plane? i.e. does he have a secret life as an NSA surveillance technician?

His short name fits perfectly into the short blackmark redaction on p. 2 of the FBI telex-

AT NINE TEN AM [ENGLER] TELEPHONICALLY RECONTACTED LOS ANGELES FBI OFFICE AND FURNISHED FOLLOWING INFORMATION;

QUOTE TRACKING EQUIPMENT NOW BEING USED IS TRACKING THE MEN AND NOT THE PLANE. UNQUOTE

[ENGLER] STATED THIS INFORMATION MAY BE SIGNIFICANT, AND SUGGESTS PASSENGERS HAD DEPARTED DOWNED PLANE. AT THIS TIME INQUIRY WAS MADE OF [ENGLER] IF HE WOULD SUBMIT TO PERSONAL INTERVIEW FOR FULL DETAILS AND HE REPLIED QUOTE NO UNQUOTE.

I don't mind calling this guy, once I get my head screwed on straight with some questions and follow-ups. Nick Begich seems like a great guy, he's got his own website that researches HAARP, Tesla and other interesting stuff that's up my alley, he's done work on behalf of indigenous peoples in Alaska, I'm sure he'd be deeply appreciative of anything I could dig up.

Toss out any potential questions or ideas, procedures, you might have- I'll give this a couple days.

Something is dreadfully wrong, and it seems like the Air Accident Report.

According to the FBI telex, Engler contacted the FBI in Los Angeles at 8:51 AM Pacific Standard Time. He provided the whereabouts of the downed plane, and the FBI forwarded that information to the LA Coast Guard.

At 9:10 AM PST Engler re-contacted the FBI and said he was tracking men, not the plane. The Bureau also forwarded this information to the Coast Guard.

The description Engler gave is near the Malaspina Glacier beside Yakutat Bay. This is roughly 57-58% of the distance from Anchorage to Juneau.

The Report states that the pilot expected a 3 1/2 hr flight, using an airspeed of 170 knots. It states that the Cessna departed at 8:59 Alaska Standard Time, which is 7:59 PST.

If that is the true departure time, the Cessna was only in the air about 50 minutes before Engler reported it down. That is only about 23-24% of its expected flight time.

I suspect that the Report fudged the Cessna times. I also suspect that Engler was tracking it while it was in flight. I also suspect that Engler was working for TRW Systems in Los Angeles, which by the early 70's had developed the Rhyolite spy satellite for the CIA, which could read data on the ground.

October 16, 1972 was a Monday.

There is also the following Coast Guard telex from October 18th-

http://www.check-six.com/lib/Famous_Missing/Images/Boggs-CG-3-emb.jpg

1. SITUATION: COGUARD RCC LONG BEACH, CALIF, RCVD A CALL FROM AN INFORMANT ADVISING THAT A CLASSIFIED PRIVATE ELECTRONICS FIRM OF WHICH HE HAD SOME KNOWLEDGE OR CONNECTION HAD DETERMINED THAT SUBJ WAS DOWN IN VIC YAKUTAT BAY WITH AT LEAST 2 POB STILL ALIVE.

2. ACTION TAKEN: RCC LONG BEACH HAS ATTEMPTED TO CONFIRM RELIABILITY OF INFORMANT AND HAS SECURED ASSISTANCE OF FBI IN THIS REGARD. INFORMANT WAS LEVEL HEADED ON PHONE AND GAVE HIS CORRECT NAME AND PHONE NUMBER. POSSIBILITY EXISTS THAT INFORMANT MAY BE SINCERE ALTHOUGH ACCURACY OF INFORMATION IS SUBJECT TO QUESTION.

Indeed, the informant, presumably Engler, may have badly misread the location of the Cessna crash, and badly misinterpreted data that showed 2 people-on-board had left the plane.

Yet even if he is a klutz with this "highly-sophisticated electronic surveillance" equipment, what is he doing alerting the FBI 50 minutes after the Cessna's reported takeoff?? i.e. it sure looks like he's been tracking the Cessna, and was likely assigned that task.

Jonathan Walczak, the author of the Seattle Weekly piece that Don Roberdeau posted, invested 3 years on this mystery and dropped $30,000. In this youtube he states that the Cessna was supposed to make a radio transmission from Hinchinbrook Island (which is off the coast of Cordova, Alaska, about halfway between Anchorage and Yakutat Bay)-

Walczak has concluded that because of extreme turbulence that morning in Portage Pass, from where he is broadcasting, that the Cessna crashed into Prince William Sound and never even made it as far as Hinchinbrook Island. The first page of the Coast Guard telex characterizes the pilot as a daredevil who would fly under any conditions-

http://www.check-six.com/lib/Famous_Missing/Images/Boggs-CG-1-emb.jpg

Veteran bush pilot Doug Bransford took off from Anchorage about 10 minutes after the Cessna and confirms this extreme turbulence-

Severe turbulence was also noted by a USAF helicopter, on p. 5 of the Air Accident Report, which abandoned an attempt to cross Portage Pass about 20 minutes before the Cessna'a takeoff.

I am presently inclined to agree with Jonathan Walczak's conclusion- that the Cessna crashed into Prince William Sound not far from Portage Pass- and am forced to view the FBI informant as sadly mistaken. Nonetheless I have questions prepared and will attempt to contact him tomorrow.

There is even more to this story, which takes it into JamesFiles-esque land. Representative Nick Begich's widow Pegge fell for a "murderer and bomber with mafia ties" in 1974, Jerry Max Pasley. They had a brief marriage and split up in 1976. Pasley, convicted of murder in the 90's, began telling people Boggs' plane was brought down intentionally, suggesting that a bomb had been placed on board. Walczak pursued that angle and it probably cost him a lot of money.

I don't know if there is a connection but, I have reports regarding my father and his absence in Miami just [after] Watergate. We know he went to Haiti just after Watergate broke and on October 1972 he was last heard of being in Alaska at Ft. Richardson where he presented false credentials to gain entrance to the base. The FBI has reports on him and was investigating my father in Alaska that day, however, some of the information is scrubbed out and the line of inquires stop.
