SEMINAR TOPIC 3 WILLIAM HENRY BURY WIFE KILLER PART ONE.

With thanks to William Beadle...

Bury was born in Stourbridge, Worcestershire, on 25th May 1859. he' s previous claim to fame was that he was the last person hanged in Dundee, Scotland. His father, Henry, was a fishmonger, his mother was Mary Bury, nee Hendy.

Unfortunately we know nothing about Bury's childhood , before, at the age of 28 he moved to London.

William Bury was a man of low self esteem. He was a drunkard, a thief, and a man of perverted sexual fantasy's -associated with alcohol abuse- who had given up a trade to live amongst the lowest of the low. He wanted money but refused to work for it, he hated women and would not socialise with them, but with his wife Ellen, he found somebody whose self esteem was as low as his own.The self image was evident in his violent attitude to sex, and his maudlin drunkeness. a match for the ripper. They wed on Easter Monday, 2nd April 1888, within a year both would have died violent deaths.

The newly weds took lodgings at Swaton Rd Bow, with an Elizabeth Haynes. On 7th April a highly significant incident occured. Haynes heard Ellen scream for help. She found Bury kneeling on her and trying to cut her throat. This was not a row that had got out of hand. Ellen discovered that Bury slept with a knife under his pillow. From here on he began to drink heavily, and regularly assault Ellen. Ted Bundy treated his partner in the same way. Shortly afterwards the Bury's moved from Swaton Rd first to 11, Blackthorn St, Bow, and finally to 3, Spanby Rd, also Bow.

Hi Stephen

Thank you for posting this information on the Jack the Ripper suspect William Henry Bury. Frankly, I don't find him a very persuasive suspect. A wife killer certainly but the Whitechapel murderer? I don't think so. It would seem to me that the chalked inscription on the wall outside his house in Dundee makes for one reason people think he could have been Jack, although it seems a poor if not fallacious reason to suspect him. A nasty and probably unbalanced individual, but. . .

In regard to your posting on the Littlechild Letter I hope Stewart Evans will weigh in on that. You may wish to P.M. him about it. Have you seen that Dr. Tumblety's alleged watch inscribed "Dr. Francis Tumblety 1885" is for sale on ebay at this moment?

Hi Chris, I agree he is not the strongest candidate But...

The sexual mutilations he inflicts on poor Ellen are very similar to Those inflicted on Chapman.

He leaves London shortly after Mary Kelly,s murder, and lies about his reasons for doing so. I will continue the seminar postings in the first box, keep your eye's peeled. I will PM Stewart on Littlechild, it will be interesting to have his expert opinion..... Thanks for your continued interest. Steve.

William Henry Bury SEMINAR TOPIC PART TWO.

On 7th June Bury cons Ellen into selling her shares he pockets £194, thats £15,000 in todays money. He uses part of this windfall to purchase a pony and trap, claiming he would use it to sell sawdust. It is at this point that he starts staying out late at night, and his already heavy drinking increases. It is possible that Bury began his reign of terror on August bank holiday, in George Yard, in 1888 George yard was a stable offering Bury a place to "Park" his pony,( Louis Diemschultz stabled his Horse and cart there.) We know that Bury took Ellen to Wolverhampton in August 1888, if he was there on the 6th Aug, and if indeed Bury is Jack then Martha was not a ripper victim. It is possible that Bury encountered Tabram, at about 2pm when returning to the stable after a heavy Bank Holiday drinking session, perhaps she accosted him, and with his violent fantasies inflamed by alcohol, he hacked her to pieces. This is how many serial killers begin, an unsophisticated, unplanned attack.

Lets sum up Burys ripper credentials.

Bury fits the profile of JTR, he is the rippers psychological "twin"

Bury fits the general physical description of the ripper, witnesses who see him with Chapman, Stride , Eddowes & kelly describe him as Short, fairly well dressed, moustachioed, beardless between 25-35. This fits very well with our man.

The ripper stole from his victims, Bury was a thief, who was obsessed with money, and would do anything to get his hands on it.

Bury lived in the east end though-out the murders, They began when he moved to the East end, and ceased when he left.

Bury left London early in 1889, he told lies about his reasons for doing so, and about where he was going.

Ellen Bury, and Catharine Eddowes were cut in precisely the same manner. Ellen, Catharine, and Annie Chapman's sexual organs were identically mutilated. this is a strong indication of the rippers personal sexual fantasies, these are like psychological fingerprints.

Jack ceased to exist after Bury's execution......

Bumped for Daniel.

My views have not changed on old Bury, there is no real evidence to tie him to the Ripper murders, but by crimminy I'd bet my pension that he is a psychological match.
