Guest Posted April 18, 2006 Share Posted April 18, 2006 Teachers praised for innovative learning materials The prestigious Teachnet UK national awards were held earlier this year, celebrating the creation of new and innovative web-based teaching material by practitioners and the progress these teachers have made in their professional development. These resources are designed to help teachers across the world develop exciting methods of teaching and learning and an award of £450 is made to those that produce successful projects. The programme is offered to teachers across England by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust in partnership with Teachers Network Organisation in the United States and Teachnet Ireland, with sponsorship from Citigroup Foundation. Its aim is to encourage teachers to develop a broad spectrum of digital classroom resources that can be freely accessed online and used or adapted by their subject colleagues around the world. The programme also offers professional development workshops so that teachers can develop the skills required to complete their projects – these workshops are also delivered by teachers who are willing to share their expertise. The Teachnet UK awards are an opportunity to recognise the contribution made by practitioners to this programme and congratulate them for their excellent work. These teaching resources are created by teachers, for teachers and they play an important role in helping schools raise achievement through sharing best practice and developing innovative teaching materials in their own classrooms. Continual professional development for teachers is essential if educational standards are to go on rising and Teachnet UK also supports the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust’s work in this area through the provision of both workshops and classroom resources. Teachers taking part in the Teachnet UK programme design 4-5 hours of web-based teaching material, along with instruction guides for students and teachers. The work should demonstrate how the teacher is using ICT innovatively and effectively in their subject area. Throughout the programme, teachers are given advice and support along with the opportunity to discuss their project with other participants. Once completed, the resource is uploaded to the Teachnet UK website so it can be viewed, adapted and implemented by teachers across the world. The Teachnet UK site is also linked directly to the US and Irish partner sites so that teachers can easily access similar resources from the three nations. This year, 30 successful projects were added, and teachers received a certificate and an award for their,efforts which represents Teachnet UK’s sincere gratitude to participants who spend time over and above their teaching responsibilities to develop and share their work with other teachers. There are now over 50 resources available on the UK site, and many more from the sister sites in Ireland and the US. Many of these teachers will go on to share and extend their expertise at a range of workshops and professional development opportunities also offered as an adjunct to the Teachnet UK programme.
