I thought at the time that the JFK assassination probably had Soviet or Castro links. As for Oswald, not too long after the assassination a Special Agent phoned me, said he understood I had claimed Oswald had tried to infiltrate a Cuban anti-Castro group in Florida, but had been kicked out and roughed up, and asked whether he could come up to our place and talk to me. I said that my source was a reporter on the Sun Sentinel, named him, and suggested that the Bureau might prefer to go directly to that source, which I suppose they did. As for your queries: (1) No. I think Oswald may have tried to get Cuban support when he went to Mexico, but doubt the Cuban government would have used that flaky a character. (2) John Martino didn't give me any Cuban names nor did he suggest that he was working with the CIA; in fact my recollection is that he distrusted the CIA. He did say that the United States government was turning over the job of killing Castro to the Mafia and that the latter as professionals wouldn't botch the job. (3) Never heard of David Morales. I thought at the time that the JFK assassination probably had Soviet or Castro links. As for Oswald, not too long after the assassination a Special Agent phoned me, said he understood I had claimed Oswald had tried to infiltrate a Cuban anti-Castro group in Florida, but had been kicked out and roughed up, and asked whether he could come up to our place and talk to me. I said that my source was a reporter on the Sun Sentinel, named him, and suggested that the Bureau might prefer to go directly to that source, which I suppose they did. That Pompano Beach Sun-Sentinel reporter was James Buchanan, whose brother Jerry was a member of Frank Sturgis' International Anti-Communist Brigade. When authorities traced the Sun-Sentinel data to their source, it was Sturgis, who admitted his claims had been "off-hand comments" made to Buchanan, and characterized his claims as "guesses, speculation and rumor." Whatever the putative merits of the claims, they either originated with, or were at least previously circulated by one John Martino, who shortly after the assassination told the listening audience of WQAM radio in Florida that Oswald had handed out FPCC literature in Florida and travelled to Cuba the prior September via Mexico City. Gerry Hemming and some of his paramilitary groupies made similar claims about Oswald trying to ingratiate himself with their circle, and that he had phoned in during a radio show on which Hemming and his crew were guests. To my knowledge, nobody has ever located a shred of evidence that any of the foregoing is true. Clearly, however, this disinformation campaign served a dual purpose: to remove any suspicion that they had anything to do with the assassination, and to further cement in the public's mind the purported assassin's leftward slant. As for your queries: (1) No. I think Oswald may have tried to get Cuban support when he went to Mexico, but doubt the Cuban government would have used that flaky a character. (2) John Martino didn't give me any Cuban names nor did he suggest that he was working with the CIA; in fact my recollection is that he distrusted the CIA. He did say that the United States government was turning over the job of killing Castro to the Mafia and that the latter as professionals wouldn't botch the job. (3) Never heard of David Morales. (10th May, 2004) Does anyone know anything about Oswald trying to infiltrate a Cuban anti-Castro group in Florida? Martino's spurious claims were, he told FBI agent James O'Connor, made to him by a Cuban source who maintained Oswald "had made a telephone call to the Cuban Intelligence Service in Cuba from a private residence in Miami" and that in Houston, Oswald had "tried to sell marijuana and handled the exchange of Cuban pesos for American dollars." When O'Connor insisted on knowing the Cuban's identity, Martino claimed he was in transit from California, and never identified him or provided any further details. (Robert Charles-Dunne) Robert, I have spoken to Howard Davis about this incident, Howard being one of the guests. He said that he remembers the show and that there were indeed callers but he doesn't remember any of them being Oswald or anyone identifying themselves as such. FWIW.
