Gerald Ford: Was he telling the truth?

Recommended Posts

On 15th January, 1975, Ron Nessen sent President Gerald Ford a memo suggesting a meeting with New York Times publisher, Arthur Sulzberger and his editors. Nessen, Ford’s press secretary, argued that the purpose of the meeting would be “to expose top officials of the Times to you in a relaxed, informal setting in hopes that they will recognize your qualities and be more understanding in future editorials.” (1)

The meeting took place the following day. Seven executives of the New York Times attended the luncheon. Arthur Sulzberger, managing editor Abe Rosenthal, Clifton Daniel, Scotty Reston, John Oakes, Tom Wicker and Max Frankel.

At the meeting Ford discussed the Rockefeller Commission. The president was asked why he had put so many conservatives on the commission. Ford replied that he needed men who could be trusted not to stray from their narrow mission of investigating the CIA’s domestic activities. Otherwise, he said, they might come upon matters that would “ruin the U.S. image around the world” and harm the reputation of every U.S. president since Truman. Rosenthal asked: “Like what?” Ford replied: “Like assassinations!” Later, Ford reminded the journalists that his comments had been off the record. (2)

Arthur Sulzberger, Abe Rosenthal and Scotty Reston were key members of Operation Mockingbird and agreed not to publish the story. Only Tom Wicker argued against this decision. However, someone leaked the information to Daniel Schorr, who worked for CBS Evening News. He was told that in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the CIA was involved in assassinating people in the United States. (3)

Over the next few weeks Schorr investigated the suspicious deaths of people living in the United States who the CIA might have wanted to kill. According to his book, Clearing the Air: “We checked with the New York police about missing Communist block diplomats who might have been intelligence agents. Several hours were spent on an unexplained automobile accident in Central Park in which two members of the Soviet delegation to the United Nations had been killed some years back. A great many interesting theories emerged, but no facts.” (4)

On 27th February, 1975, Schorr was granted an interview with William Colby. One of Schorr’s questions was: “Has the CIA ever killed anybody in this country.” Colby, was aware of what Ford had told the New York Times executives. Colby wrote in his memoirs: “I didn’t know how far the President had gone.” He therefore decided to reply: “Not in this country.” (5)

Colby refused to elaborate on this answer. Schorr believed he had enough information to go ahead with the story. On 28th February, Schorr broadcast on CBS that “President Ford had reportedly warned associates that if current investigations go to far they could uncover several assassinations of foreign officials involving the CIA.” (6)

The story caused a tremendous stir and Schorr was savagely attacked in the media for endangering national security. Richard Helms even went as far as to call Schorr a “killer” and a “cocksucker”. (7) However, it was the first time that the CIA had admitted to carrying out assassinations. As a result of this story, Fletcher Prouty came forward and offered to tell his story of how the CIA had been involved in a plot to kill Fidel Castro. This program went out on the CBS Evening News on 29th April. (8)

Given this information, Frank Church had no other option but to include CIA assassination plots in his own investigation. (9) However, because of Colby’s admission, he concentrated on CIA assassination attempts on foreign leaders such as Patrice Lumumba (Congo), Ngo Dinh Diem (Vietnam), Fidel Castro (Cuba) and Rafael Trujillo (Dominican Republic).

The possibility remains, that Gerald Ford was talking about the assassinations that took place in the United States. Had he got his information from the time he was a member of the Warren Commission?

Another "open mike" story (oh, xxxx!):

When Ford testified before the HSCA, sitting beside him was his attorney, David "Blinky" Belin, who had been WC counsel also.

During a break in Ford's testimony, he leaned over to Belin and asked..."I HAVEN'T COMPROMISED ANYTHING, HAVE I?"

How do we know? National Public Radio was broadcasting and televising the HSCA testimony. FORD DID NOT REALIZE THE MIKE WAS HOT DURING THE BREAK, and his words were recorded by NPR. Nina Totenberg, the on-air commentator made Ford's gaffe public. Presumably the tape still exists at the Washington NPR headquarters.

I remember reading sometime ago that Gerald Ford was blackmailed into signing the Warren Report. It had something to do with Bobby Baker and Fred Black who recorded Ford doing something in a hotel room. Does anyone remember where they read this?

I have found the information I was looking for. The story appears in Bobby Baker’s Wheeling and Dealing (page 209). The background to this story comes from several different sources, including the LBJ tapes. It seems that LBJ and Hoover shared their files on politicians. Baker used to help obtain this information via the sex parties he held for politicians and businessmen. These were often held in Carole Tyler’s home (the one purchased by Baker). Fred Baker, a lobbyist who was involved with Baker, George Smathers, Grant Stockdale, Ed Levenson, Benny Sigelbaum, etc. in the Serv-U-Corporation, was also used to obtain this information.

Fred Black, like other crooked characters, kept a permanent room in a hotel. Black’s was in the Sheraton-Carlton. This was wired up and Black’s business meetings were all recorded. It was important to LBJ that he drew into as many politicians as possible into his corrupt schemes. Once he has recordings of them taking money he had complete control over them. According to Baker, Gerald Ford had a meeting with Black at the Sheraton-Carlton. What was said was recorded on tape.

During 1963 both Black and Baker were being investigated for corruption. Charges against taking bribes while working for the Howard Foundry Company were dropped but in 1964 he was convicted of tax invasion. According to the lawyer, William Torbitt (David Copeland): “Black publicly told many people in Washington, D.C. he had informed J. Edgar Hoover that an income tax conviction against him must be reversed or he would blow the lid off Washington with revelations of the assassination conspirators. Lobbyist Black prevailed upon J. Edgar Hoover to admit error before the Supreme Court where his case was reversed in 1966."

The case was reversed on a technicality. The FBI admitted it had bugged his Sheraton-Carlton hotel room. In reality, the bugging took place at the request of Black/LBJ.

LBJ would have selected members of the Warren Commission because he had some sort of hold over them. The Black tapes were probably used to force Ford to agree to Hoover’s FBI report being accepted as a basis of the Warren Commission report. Other members said that Ford appeared to be representing the FBI on the WC. He no doubt discovered the CIA involvement in the assassination of JFK. This gave the CIA control over him. I suspect the CIA forced Nixon to take Ford as his vice president when Spiro Agnew resigned in October, 1973. Part of the deal was that Ford would give Nixon a pardon.

Most importantly, Ford’s job was to cover up the information that had begun to leak during James Schlesinger’s time as director of the CIA (the family jewels). He did this my establishing the Rockefeller Commission. When Daniel Schorr’s story about assassinations was leaked, Ford was forced to include this in the Rockefeller investigation. However, he refused to publish this section of the report. Again there was a big fuss and Ford eventually said the assassination files were passed to the Frank Church committee. I suspect that only those files that related to foreign assassinations were passed over to Church. These implicated both Republican and Democratic presidents. This insured that members of the committee took the view that it was impossible to say that these were presidential or CIA operations. (Barry Goldwater briefed journalists that he had seen evidence that they were JFK and RFK operations). Church replied that Goldwater only said this because both men were dead and were unable to defend themselves.

Most may already be familiar with this but it's worth repeating here:

Quoted from Assistant FBI Director William Sullivan's book, "My Thirty Years in Hoover's FBI":

"Hoover was delighted when Ford was named to the Warren Commission. The Director wrote in one of his internal memos that the bureau could expect Ford to "look after FBI interests,' and he did, keeping us fully advised of what was going on behind closed doors. He was our...informant on the Warren Commission."

Sullivan was one of the few liberal Democrats to rise to a high position in Hoover's FBI -- and it's worth noting that he was shot and killed in an accidental hunting accident in 1977. Sullivan was to testify before the House Select Committee on Assassinations that year, one of six top FBI officials who died in a six month period in 1977.

I have a copy of the book but thank you for reminding me about this quote. Sullivan also wrote the original FBI report on the assassination of JFK. He was also employed by Richard Nixon after he was sacked by Hoover. I suspect it was via Sullivan that Nixon discovered who killed JFK. Nixon was taken care of over Watergate. Sullivan remained a free spirit and was a dangerous character when he met his death. He was writing his memoirs at the time, but these were edited by Bill Brown before being published.

In Gerald D. McKnight’s great book, Breach of Trust, he looks at how Gerald Ford got on the Warren Commission. LBJ phoned up Hoover and asked him what he thought of the idea. Hoover said he had only seen him on television but he looked fairly good. Hoover was lying. Ford had been a FBI asset since 1946. Hoover helped him win his first election. Ford reciprocated in his maiden speech by asking Congress to increase Hoover’s salary.

Hoover assigned Carta DeLoach to cultivate Ford as an asset. Interestingly, LBJ was very close to DeLoach. Recently released documents show that DeLoach had a series of meetings with Ford while he was a member of the Warren Commission. They worked together in making sure that Warren Olney III did not become chief counsel of the WC. Olney was considered to be too “liberal” and in the past had criticised the FBI.

DeLoach and Ford also tried to get Norman Redlich removed as J. Lee Rankin’s special assistant. Redlich was on the Emergency Civil Liberties Committee, an organization considered by Hoover to have been set-up to "defend the cases of Communist lawbreakers". This information was leaked to a group of right-wing politicians. On 5th May, 1964, Ralph F. Beermann, a Republican Party congressman, made a speech claiming that Redlich was associated with the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. Beermann called for Redlich to be removed as a staff member of the Warren Commission. He was supported by Karl E. Mundt who said: "We want a report from the Commission which Americans will accept as factual, which will put to rest all the ugly rumors now in circulation and which the world will believe. Who but the most gullible would believe any report if it were written in part by persons with Communist connections?"

Gerald Ford joined in the attack and at one closed-door session of the Warren Commission he called for Redlich to be dismissed. Earl Warren and J. Lee Rankin both supported him and he retained his job. However, it is believed that this campaign had the desired impact on Redlich’s desire to ask awkward questions.

Ford, along with Dulles and McCoy, were the main supporters of the lone gunman theory. Russell, Bloggs and Cooper at first refused to go along with this. However, pressure was applied, and they eventually gave in and signed the report. One wonders if this would have happened if the FBI agents who attended JFK’s autopsy, Francis X. O'Neill and James W. Sibert, were allowed to testify before the WC. We now know that after examining the wounds they both rejected the lone-gunman theory. The same is also true of Jerrol Francis Custer, the man who took the X-rays and Paul O’Connor, the lab technician at the autopsy.

P.S. Forgot to add!

In event that you wish to see exactly how "close" LBJ & Cartha DeLoach actually were, then one just might want to check into the family geneology of the DeLoach and Youngblood families of Georgia.

John;

You really should refrain from such statements. It makes you appear not unlike some of your "American Cousins" who look for "bugged" water sprinkler systems in Dealy Plaza.

Just "Think Politics" and "Politicians", and that should be sufficient.

Of course, a little "moola" from the Rockefellar's also helps.

And in those regards, one should place into the proper context, exactly what is it that would make a completely "Die Hard" Southern Democrat make a complete turnabout and fully support the Republican Party.

"We need to get Connally in on this, he knows how to take care of things like this" (or words to that effect)

  • 2 weeks later...

Seeing the title of this thread reminds me of an old LBJ joke, [which I submit when it came to 11/22/63] Johnson & Hoover had that in common.

Q: How can you tell when old Lyndon is lying?

A: When his lips are moving.

There is one sentence that sums up Gerald Ford's place in history. "What Congressman Ford couldn't do, Vice-President Ford could do."

FORMER PRESIDENT GERALD FORD ON THE LARRY KING SHOW, TNN :

KING: You are the last member of the Warren Commission.

FORD: That is correct.

KING: Ever had a doubt that there was anyone oter than Lee Harvey Oswald was invovlved?

FORD: I reiterate, that we, as a seven member board - commission, we said that Lee Harvey Oswald committed the assassination, and we as a commission, found no evidence of a conspiracy, foreign or domestic. We agreed on that unanimously. I think today, I have the same strong feeling.

KING: So you haven't wavered?

FORD: Not a bit.

KING: Were you rished? Some say that President Johnson put a rush on you to get this all done.

FORD: It was desirable to get it completed prior to the elections of 1964. We had 13 months to do it, to carry out our responsibilities as a commission, so I think we had ample time Larry, but the elections coming up really did not interfere with our judgements.

KING: One of the reasons conspiracy theorists hold force is that it's hard to accept that one lone man could change the world.

FORD: Let me say this Larry, there are critics, cynics as to who killed Abraham Lincoln.

KING: Correct.

FORD: And that's over 100 years ago. So I'm sure you are going to have people in addition to Oliver Stone and some other people in the years ahead who will say the same thing, but the truth is, I have seen no, new credible evidence that will change my mind.

It's the old argument which has been going on for 43 years, if there was no conspiracy, why has there been a pattern of lies, obfuscation and deception which has been ongoing since 11/22/63? There is a Document at the Gerald Ford Library entitled 'CIA Activities in Dallas 1963,' if it hasn't already been destroyed. The old argument 'cannot be released for reasons of National Security, potential compromising of intelligence sources and methods, is a lie that has been repeated so often it has helped create the apathetic version of American culture we witness today, where ostensibly America has become 'the land of confusion,' the same old arguments by the old pariahs Warren, Schiller, Belin, Aynesworth, Ramsey Clark.....You blink your eyes and twenty, thirty years later there is the new generation the Posner's, McAdams, Lambert's still spewing the same old crap. Anyone who disagreed with the artificial history of the 60's was a Communist, now they are 'extreme left wing,' or even gasp, terrorists. A technique which has nothing to do with an honest discussion of issue's. So now it has all come to this. We live in a country where the abuses of Cointelpro under Nixon and Hoover are by virtue of VP Cheney 'looked at in a different light,' it's almost like somebody decided that Richard Nixon was a Democrat, or never existed. Out with the old, in with the new and improved Republican Party of compassionate conservatism, the same type of compassionate conservatism that seemed intent on derailing the extension of the Voting Right's Act, or compassionately fights tooth and nail to keep our servicemen and women with less than adequate battlefield armor, or back's Israel even when the rest of the world see's the disparity between kidnapping two soldiers and using it as a pretext for literally 'bombing the hell out of innocent civilians', who aren't responsible for Hezbollah, is there such a creature ascompassionate collateral damage, I wouldn't even be surprised to hear something about the necessity of victims.

In the America according to Dick Cheney COINTELPRO was perfectly OK, in fact, the abuses of power of that era are the model for the 'new Amerika', an America where elections are fixed, where a Supreme Court can [just one time?] decide who the President will be, and Gore doesen't seem bothered. I watched Fahrenheit 9-11 because I live in a free country, you shouldn't have to explain wanting to do anything that is 'not illegal,' and I am glad I did, because it wasn't until then that I realized a lot of people on Inauguration Day realized exactly what had happened in Florida, even Vincent Bugliosi got that right, the motorcade malfunction on Inauguration Day i.e. the egg and tomato throwing started at precisely the point where the President-elect's party get's out of the motorcade, and traditionally walk the remainder of the parade route, this time the President elect's limo paused for a few moments assessing the situation and then 'ran like hell' OUR? media decided we didn't need to know that! Eventually they would have the un-mitigated gall to tell us to 'think about what you say,' the rest is history.....an Administration that has done nothing but spread fear and divisiveness, demonizing the Democrats, with their own paid for media [see Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism] now we are told that ta daa 'The Border with Mexico will be operationally secured by 2008!' Wow, that's is our government in-action.

The ultimate insult to America and American's is for our own government to attack the people who do all the working and sweating and dying for this country and then lie about anything and everything that relate to the profound issues facing America, and then ostensibly have Homeland Security pick you up if you have the audacity to say 'the Emperor has no clothes,' a person does not have to even ask, is this a Democracy, because when that is how a government 'runs the country' it is on the road to ruin, morally, spiritually and politically.

It is rather obvious to a student of history that when the above cited voices from on-high declare anyone who believes that the JFK Assassination was a conspiracy due to those 'darn lone nut's,' and adds the addendum that anyone who believes otherwise should 'examine' their loyalties, IQ, political oulook ad naseum, they are also casting the same stone at [in no particular order] Richard Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Robert F. Kennedy who all believed it was a conspiracy!

In conclusion: It seems those who are seemingly indifferent to a President being taken out, or, even think Kennedy was 'soft on Communism' and deserved what happened, miss the ultimate point: When a coup d'etat happens in ANY country, it places an unelected official in power, it lowers civility and the rule of law; throw in the overtones of a Fascist or at

best right -wing plot and the political balance of power is upset, and you can never put the genie back in the bottle. When Jack Ruby stated "a whole new form of government is going to take over this country, and I know I won't live to see you another time," it appears he was right on both counts. I'd say thats a pretty good batting average for someone who was supposed to be insane.
