Dissemination

To help me write the minutes of Sunday’s meeting I would like people to post details of what they intend to do about dissemination of the meeting we held in Toulouse.

From my experience of journalists, they will write articles about meetings if you do most of the work for them. Therefore I would suggest we send a package to “sympathetic journalist”. As well as a summary of the E-HELP project and a rationale of our meeting, I think it would be a good idea to send out Richard’s excellent booklet “Delegates and Presentations”. Is it possible for Richard to attach this as a Word document (or to send it by email). Later today I will work on a draft of the summary and rationale.

I will use my contacts at the Guardian, Independent, Telegraph, Times Educational Supplement, Teaching History, History Today and BBC History to get some articles published on the meeting.

I also agreed to do a presentation of E-HELP at the SHP Conference in July.

It would be good to send out the documents you mentioned (if Richard has the time to make them into word documents). I will translate these into Swedish. I would also appreciate the text you write John. This would as well be translated into Swedish and then I'll get in contact with several newspapers, magazines and some groups that would be interested in this project. I will also put some time into talking with some of them personally to see who would be a good future "partner" (evaluating what they say, write and shown interest...).

I would propose sending out the following to journalists:

E-HELP : European History E-Learning Project

The European History E-Learning Project (E-HELP) is a Comenius 2.1 Project (Training of School Educational Staff). Established in October, 2004, the overall aim of E-HELP is to encourage and improve the use of ICT and the Internet in history classrooms in Europe.

The E-HELP team includes:

Richard Jones-Nerzic (France: International School of Toulouse)

Juan Carlos Ocaña (Spain: IES Parque de Lisboa, Madrid)

Vicente López-Brea Fernández (Spain: Alcorcon Teachers Support Centre, Madrid)

Nico Zijlstra (Netherlands: Sintermeerten College, Heerlen)

Anders MacGregor-Thunell (Sweden: Hvitfeldtska Gymnasiet, Gothenburg)

Dalibor Svoboda (Sweden: Fredrika Bremer Gymnasium, Stockholm)

Terry Hadyn (UK: University of East Anglia)

Alf Wilkinson (UK: Historical Association)

Andy Walker (UK: Dartford Technology College)

John Simkin (UK: Spartacus Educational)

Over the next three years E-HELP will:

(1) Research, evaluate and present evidence of good practice in the use of ICT and the Internet in European History Classrooms.

(2) Produce and manage a multilingual website and discussion forum to support the project and its aims.

(3) Create innovative online history resources for teaching a European dimension with a range of “past-present” historical issues in a multilingual/second language context.

(4) Deliver a residential course in July 2007 (International School of Toulouse) in the use of ICT and the Internet in the history classroom.

E-HELP held its first meeting in Toulouse on 17th-20th February, 2005. This included a series of presentation on the use of ICT in the classroom:

Richard Jones-Nerzic (When are computers actually going to teach history?)

Dan Lyndon (Information is not Learning)

Anders MacGregor-Thunell (Working with Local Archives)

Dave Martin (ICT and Students’ Historical Communication Skills)

Dalibor Svoboda (The Knowledge and Competent Foundation)

Isabelle Voegeli (The Use of ENA in the History Classroom)

John Simkin (Using ICT to Turn Students into Historians)

Caterina Gasparini (Learning by Shared Connected Knowledge)

Nico Zijlstra (Maintaining Your Own History Website)

Doug Belshaw (ICT and Collaborative Teaching and Learning)

Janos Blasszauer (ICT and the Quality of Teaching and Learning)

Terry Hadyn (Using ICT in School History to Develop Political Literacy)

José Luis de la Torre (EducaHistoria and Teaching History)

Alf Wilkinson (Using the Web Effectively for Research)

Andy Walker (Using ICT to Break Down Barriers to Learning)

Juan Carlos Ocaña (Looking to the Future)

Andrew Field (The Past in the Future)

All presentations were filmed and will be available in electronic form on the e-Help website later in the project. For more information on these seminars see attached file and the International Education Forum.

As well as a summary of the E-HELP project and a rationale of our meeting, I think it would be a good idea to send out Richard’s excellent booklet “Delegates and Presentations”.

To echo Andy's comments about the organisation, this excellent booklet was in fact Carole's doing. I don't have an electronic copy today but I can certainly get hold of it by tomorrow at the latest.

Would it be sensible to mention that all presentations were filmed and will be available in electronic form on the e-Help website later in the project...

I have actually started work on them today.

An obvious area for dissemination in the History Teacher's Forum. I have reposted a version of John's report here.

I also pointed out that the British Council currently offers grants of up to £1500 for people to attend Comenius 2.2 courses.

I am expecting to have a waiting list for the Toulouse course by the end of the week...

I am translating John's text and send it to some educational and regular newspapers.

I intend to send it to European schoolnet to be published in:

Comenius Space newsletter

MyEurope newsletter

Spring Day in Europe newsletter

I will post the translated text to Foros de Debate on Jose Luis de la Torre's web site (Educahistoria). This is the most important history teachers forum in Spain.

I will inform about our project in Comenius course for European teachers and student teachers in Córdoba. This course is focused on European Citizenship and Multiculturalism and will take place next March.

Conference on ICT applied to teaching History and Geography, organised by the Spanish History and Geography teachers Association. It will take place in September in Santiago de Compostela.

Finally, I will try to get in touch with my regional educational authorities to find more and better ways to disseminate E-HELP.

I will include details in the HA enews letter, and raise the project at Secondary Committee. The project will feature regularly in HA enews - 4000 history teachers. We will get text in the secondary journal - Teaching History - and in the Becta enewsletter in the autumn. I shall endeavour to brief the Times Educational Supplement - weekly teachers newspapers - history journalist in due course. I think that's all I said I would do in the short term....

I have now sent out the press release to the Education Guardian, History Today, Teaching History, TES, Online, The Teacher, BBC History Magazine and Education. I included the following: "Let me know if you want me to write about the project in more detail or if you want any of our contributors to turn their seminars into articles." I have also sent the press release to several freelance journalists who work for several different newspapers and magazines.

Email from the Guardian:

Hi John, it looks an interesting project. Would you write a 900 word piece introducing the project, saying how it can help history teachers, and pick out some of the more interesting case history material from the speakers at the Toulouse conference. I am after practical stuff which teachers can then go away and replicate in class. Can you ring me to discuss today or tomorrow and maybe you can either interview the best speakers for some short case histories or get them to write them depending on time constraints? I'd ideally need copy by tomorrow week (Friday March 4 or failing that first thing on Monday March 7. Pic ideas would be good to have asap as our researchers will checking out pics next week. Look forward to hearing from you soonest. Best wishes, Richard
