Charles Brandt on the Hoffa killing and JFK assassination

Recommended Posts

Summary from coasttocoastam website of July 25, 2016 of last night's interview of Charles Brandt:

Date: Sunday - July 24, 2016
Host: George Knapp
Guests: Charles Brandt

In the first half, George Knapp welcomed investigative author and lawyer Charles Brandt. In the course of nearly five years of recorded interviews, mob strongman Frank Sheeran confessed to Brandt that he handled more than 25 hits for the Mob, and was eventually ordered to kill his friend Jimmy Hoffa. Brandt shared an update to his original investigation with more evidence about Sheeran's involvement with Hoffa, new information on other famous murders, and how the Mob does not take "no" for an answer. Brandt described Sheeran’s extensive WWII battle service and how it changed him from a "Huckleberry Finn type" beforehand, but "came out of the war a changed man." His strict Catholic upbringing and the morals instilled in him were suppressed by his war experiences. This made him ripe for recruitment by organized crime when he met mobster Russell Bufalino in the 1950s and the two became friends. Bufalino started Sheeran on small jobs, such as collecting unpaid loans, and slowly eased him into actual murders.

Brandt said that after he got Sheeran out of jail on a medical leave, the two became friends and began a series of interviews in which the former hit man confessed his role as the triggerman in the murder of Hoffa, well as some other famous assassinations, such as the death of crime boss Joey Gallo in 1972. Brandt recalled the account that Sheeran gave him of the murder of Hoffa and how it matched evidence that was later found showing a trail of blood at the house where the alleged hit took place. Brandt also said that Sheeran darkly hinted that he was involved with the assassination of JFK but "would not go anywhere near Dallas" when questioned. A film directed by Martin Scorcese and starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino based on Brandt’s research is slated to begin production soon. Related article on the search for Hoffa.

The house described in this article is where Frank Sheeran killed Hoffa. Charles Brandt says that within minutes Hoffa's body was taken to a nearby funeral home and from there to a cemetery where the body was cremated. All this took place within one hour.

Charles Brandt's new edition of his book states that the Mob had three rifles flown from the Midwest to a Mob controlled restaurant in Brooklyn where Frank Sheeran's assignment was to pick them up and transport them to Baltimore. Sheeran did not know about their intended use. A few days later JFK was assassinated and only then did Sheeran realize what his role had been in the conspiracy.

Brandt says that David Kaiser in his book, The Road to Dallas, on page 411 has a paragraph that touches the above. However, Brandt says that Kaiser in his historical account of the assassination failed to realize the true significance of what he has written about in the paragraph.

I just finished reading "I Heard You Paint Houses" (2016 paperback edition), and I think there are some portions worthy of further discussion that weren't fully touched on in the posts above.

This is my breakdown of the portions of the book I think are most relevant to the JFK assassination:

Frank Sheeran, a labor union official, worked for Russell Bufalino, (Mafia boss of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Bufalino family from 1959 to 1989) and labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa. Sheeran had a criminal career from 1945 to 1975, including multiple murders. Sheeran claims to have murdered Hoffa in 1975.

Pg. 119 – Sheeran says he met Jack Ruby several times. Sheeran says that he saw Ruby in the company of Sam Giancana (the boss of the Mafia’s Chicago Outfit from 1957–1966), and Paul “Red” Dorfman (the head of the Chicago Waste Handler's Union and a member of the Chicago Outfit.)

Pgs. 128 – 129 – Sheeran describes meeting Carlos Marcello’s (Mafia boss of New Orleans) pilot David Ferrie (initially the central figure in New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison’s 1966 JFK investigation.) Sheeran says that some time before the 1961 failed Bay Of Pigs invasion of Cuba he was told by Hoffa to drive a truck to Baltimore, Maryland, and meet Ferrie at a landing strip at the Harry C. Campbell concrete plant. A group of soldiers loaded military uniforms, weapons, and ammunition onto Sheeran's truck and Sheeran drove the weapons to Orange Grove, Florida. According to Sheeran, Ferrie told him to deliver the weapons to E. Howard Hunt., even describing Hunt’s large ears. Sheeran says he delivered the weapons to Hunt and a group of anti-Castro Cubans.

Pgs 162 – 163 – Sheeran says that a few days before the JFK assassination he was told by Russell Bufalino to go to a restaurant in New York, New York. At the restaurant Sheeran was given a duffel bag of what he assumed to be rifles and was instructed to take the bag to David Ferrie at the concrete plant landing strip in Baltimore, Maryland. Sheeran says that he did as instructed, delivering the bag to Ferrie and another man that Sheeran declined to name but recognized as a member of New York’s Genovese crime family.

Pgs 241-242 – Sheeran claims that in October 1974 Jimmy Hoffa gave Sheeran more details about Sheeran’s November 1963 mission to Baltimore, Maryland. Hoffa allegedly told Sheeran:

- The duffel bag contained high powered rifles intended for the JFK assassination

- The rifles were replacements for rifles that were in the trunk of a Ford Thunderbird that was totaled in a drunk driving accident

- Ferrie was delivering the replacement rifles

- Actual police officers, and conspirators posing as police officers, were part of the assassination

- Policemen friends of Jack Ruby were originally intended to kill Oswald, but somehow Ruby “bungled” it, and had to take care of Oswald himself

- Ruby feared being tortured and murdered if he failed to kill Oswald

- Mob bosses Carlos Marcello, Sam Giancana, and Santo Trafficante Jr. (Mafia boss of Florida and Cuba) were involved in the assassination

- Says that all the conspirators were also involved in the Bay Of Pigs

Pgs 332 – 335 – Author Charles Brandt questions Sheeran about why so many people were involved in the killing of Jimmy Hoffa. Sheeran responds that it is essentially a precautionary measure for the assassins. A single assassin would themselves be killed after the assassination just to keep things quiet, but when multiple assassins are used in a hit, the conspirators are not likely to have all the assassins killed.

If there is a film made using this book as a template, will they allow any of these JFK  assassination related accounts to be in the script?

My guess is...no.

There is a classic MO you so often see in Organized Crime ordered murders of high profile or status targets.

And that is the use of team conspirators posing as police officers with real police uniforms either assisting in the actual murder or providing secure actual police free space for the murder and/or escape cover for the real murderers.

You see this in organized crime themed movies all the time ( the Godfather 2 film showed this ) and who can forget Capone's Valentine's Day massacre was carried out by his hit men dressed as cops.

In Dealey Plaza there were reports by real policemen stating they confronted civilian suit wearing individuals who they didn't instantly recognize in the Rail Road parking lot and around the Texas School Book Depository building just minutes after the fatal shots, and who pulled out identification as Secret Service men when there were officially no SS men present there.

Jimmy Hoffa was interviewed on the Dick Cavett show on 10,31,1973. You must view this.

Hoffa #LaCosaNostra #Gambino #Bonanno #Luchese #Genovese #Columbo Organized crime figure

There are many fascinating comments by Hoffa in this interview regarding JFK and RFK and Hoffa's feelings and even actions on the day each was murdered.

I think this nationally broadcast television appearance by Hoffa may have sealed his future murder fate.

It was one of those "the guy is talking too much" Mafia things where they probably thought and decided Hoffa was playing against their rules by trying to gain back his Teamsters presidency with an end-around national publicity angle when they didn't want him back in this position.

The film is almost complete. It's called "The Irishman" and should be released on Netflix later this year, with some possible theatrical screenings as well. Judging from the trailer, there will be some Kennedy elements.

Seth Kantor accessed September through November 1963 phone records of Jack Ruby through the FOIA. He cites these in his 1978 book "Who Was Jack Ruby?"

Kantor writes that Jack Ruby called men very similar to Frank Sheeran in high organized crime level hit man stature and close to top Mafia figures like Sam Giancanna and Carlos Marcello and including Jimmy Hoffa.

Men like David Yaras, Barney Baker, Nofio Pecora, etc.

Does anyone really believe these calls to these hit men had to do with Ruby's cat fight problems with his hot headed feature stripper "Jada" aka Janet Conforto?

This is a Netflix movie? Is it not going to be released to theaters everywhere? I would think with the cast and crew behind this that a world wide theatrical release is scheduled.

It is scheduled to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 27, 2019. The film is set to have a limited theatrical release, followed by digital streaming in late 2019 by Netflix.[3]

An Oliver Stone JFK type all star cast and huge $200 million dollar production budget and it's only scheduled for limited national theater release?

That's a production budget amount of some of these wide release comic super hero films!

And much of that is for CGI.

Since a real life based organized crime film would probably not use much of that technology one can only guess that the bulk of The Irishman's big budget is for salaries of the well known top tier A-list actors, producers and director?

Hope the JFK assassination references in the book aren't significantly watered down and/or cut because Sheeran's story really does includes many of these and which involve real main characters in the JFK event story.

If the film goes mainly Netflix I hope it's viewership isn't too limited.

Limited theatrical release by December to qualify the film for Oscars.  It's complicated by the politics of theater chains that frown on Netflix films and other made-for-home-distribution films using limited theater runs for this purpose, while simultaneously making them available on home services.

This purports to be the official Netflix documentary on the historical background of The Irishman.  The period film and stills are good, but this can't help but incite disagreement:

Never seen this Hoffa doc but that YouTube channel has some good stuff on it. A lot of it is about African American street gangs and drugs but there are some interesting videos on there.
