  1. I've just had the same debate. Over the last 3 weeks, having kept careful records, 170 pieces of homework (from seven KS3 classes) were NOT handed in when requested. The amount of time and effort required to chase up this missing work is out of all proportion to its value. The only justification for giving KS3 pupils homework is to try and train them in good habits but with parents giving little or no support in many cases, this is a very difficult task. We could probably get away with not setting GCSE classes homework if they worked steadily in class over the two years. We certainly couldn't cope with AS/A2 courses without setting work outside lessons - so it may be that the only justification for a Year 7 getting homework is that it may help them with their sixth form courses! 2. Ordnance Survey digital maps are now available for schools through the new data supply web site at: MapsDirect This new service has two parts: 1. it enables all schools to buy OS Land-Line digital data to use with GIS software 2. it allows you to access and work with the new OS Mastermap data on-line. There is a FREE trial period for the new OS Mastermap on-line service that ends on 26 March, so register early to make the most of this opportunity. You can work online or print out the OS Mastermaps to use in lessons. If you try the new service, please give some feedback on this forum so that others can see how easy it is to use (or not) and how useful it is (or not). You can also give suggestions for using digital maps and/or the new online mapping service in lessons. GeoDave
  3. Geography teachers ARE concerned by this move as it is open to abuse by heads who may see it as a convenient 'catch-all' course, particularly if it contains elements of citizenship as well, and students may be steered into such a course for all the wrong reasons. Will the course be taught by subject specialists? Will the course allow students to go on to study Geography and/or History at 'AS' and 'A2'? Lots of questions raised by this initiative.....personally, I think it will do nothing to promote either Geography or History as key subjects for study at this level.
  4. Hi I'm David Rayner and I currently work as a Head of Geography at a secondary school in Kent, southeast England. I run two geography websites GeoResources and GeoInteractive. I have had a long interest in the use of ICT in Geography and am currently trying to provide interactive resources for teachers to use with digital projectors and interactive whiteboards. I have also written articles for Heinemann, Actis, Nelson Thorne and the Swiss Embassy, and led workshops at national geography conferences in Newcastle and London.
  5. A new website for Geography teachers has just been launched. It is called GeoInteractive and has two main aims: The first aim is to act as a focal point for teachers to contribute classroom resources of all kinds that can be shared e.g. worksheets, photos, powerpoint presentations, etc.. The second aim is to provide interactive resources that teachers can use with digital projectors and interactive whiteboards. The URL is: GeoInteractive There are sample pages that everyone can have a look at before the site goes fully live on January 1st 2004. I would be interested in any positive and/or constructive opinions on the new website. Best wishes GeoDave
