Mediaeval history of Transsilvania, once a part of the kingdom of Hungary, then of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now of Romania; history of the Germans of romania between the two wars (1919-1945), especially the nazification-process, which culminated in the establishing of the "Volksgruppe der Deutschen in Rumänien" - 'The Ethnical group of the Germans in Romania' under the leadership of SS-men, which organization was fully at the disposal of the Third Reich. I'm also interested in ancient Greek and Roman history and culture. especially in their myths, as well as in that of the ancient Anatolia (e.g. the Hitites); I work on the translation of "Saturnalia" by Macrobius for personal purpose.

  1. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> For the time being only short answers to questions 1 and 3: The problem of street names is quite delicate. From the fact that after Reunification of the two German states on the territory of the former German Democratic Republic one generally returned to the old street names dating back to the Weimar Republic one may understand that some streets got their Jewish names back. On the other hand there are many street names on the territory of the former Federal Republic dedicated to persons belonging to the rightist and extreme right political spectrum, like army officers who served in Hitler's Wehrmacht, around which strong controversies arose and which in some cases were dropped, in some cases remaining unchanged. Third question: the addition "Sarah" and "Israel" was introduced to facilitate the identification of Germans of Jewish origin by the authorities. There should be no doubt about the _racial_ origin of the persons, in whose identity papers those names were present. Klaus Popa
  2. Leaving aside war propaganda of the Allies and of the Axis-powers it was in the first instance a war of breaking the status of an imperial power of Britain, then, starting with the invasion of Russia in 1941 a declared war of annihilating the Russian/Bolshevik ?Untermensch? (inferior race) and increasingly the effort to wipe out Jewish peole in Europe. For Britain as an imperial power it was the aim of keeping its status as a colonial power and maintaining the status quo established after the First World War. For Britain it was less an ideological and in no way a ?war of the races?, which it was for Hitler?s Germany ? the anti-Soviet struggle was officially termed as a war of ideologies ? which was in fact the collision of two totalitarian, antidemocratic, tyrannical systems.
  3. Besides Hitler there were many nationalist authors who voiced the theories which are present in Hitler's 'Mein Kampf'. Racism and antisemitism was the main theme of nationalist German literature, art and philosophy in the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. As to the question why German Fascism was so racist as compared to Fascism in other countries, one should consider that racism is the central part of the Nazi doctrine. This racism is based upon the assumption that the 'Nordic' or 'Aryan-Germanic' race is superior to all existing races, biologically as well as culturally. From here the claim is derived that the Aryans/Germans are entitled to leadership and dominion over all other races and destined to the domination of the world. To this basic stock of ideas efficiency thinking was added, which under Nazi rule was applied in a fanaticized form to achieving the goal of so called 'New Europe' and subsequently 'New world order?. Domination of the 'Aryan/Germanic' race could only be guaranteed by ultimate subjugation and/or physical elimination of racially 'inferior/useless' (German minderwertig, unwert) population groups and individuals. Here originates the extermination of those who were considered by the Nazis the chief enemies of the German people: the Jews, the Bolshevik, democrats and liberals. No other fascist regime carried out physical extermination to such a degree like the Nazis did, because their genocide was planned and on industrial scale. It took place in the occupied territories in eastern Europe: Poland, Ukraine, Bielorussia, the Baltic States, Russia, Yugolsavia, Greece and Hungary. Klaus Popa
  4. To my previous answer I want to add the main reason for that interdiction: avoiding the intermingling of races, in this case of the superior Aryan-Germanic race of the 'Uebermensch' and the allegedly inferior race of the Semites, who were ascribed to the 'Untermensch' -type. For the sake of so called 'racial purity' this prohibition and many others of the 'Nuremberg Laws' were set up and instituted as state doctrine. Klaus Popa, MA.
  5. Dear Justin, the regulation that "Jews cannot employ Germans in their home under the age of 45" is first of all based upon the key-principle and therefore axion of Nazi racism and antisemitism, that no German, who is considered to belonging to the "Uebermensch" and to the so called "arian race" should be "exploited" in any way by the non-arian and "Untermenschen", as the Jews were considered to be. Secondly: the age of 45 is realted to reasons of employment of Germans up to 45 in the Nazi war economy and miltarist system - the latter comprising the "Wehrmacht" and the paramilitary organiazations SS, SA, Hitlerjugend, Deutsche Arbeits Front etc. Klaus Popa, MA. 6. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The worst things about communism were: * the nationalizing of almost everything in the early (Stalinist) years of communist rule, under the pretext of the Marxist postulate that private property is the root of all evil; the ruthless suppression of all former owners of landed, industrial and financial property, of liberal intellectuals, of the clergy and of all those considered to be enemies of the people, to whom also belonged the so called exploiters of the working masses?; general terror accompanied these inhumane measures of expropriation; * no communist constitution guaranteed private property and individual/human rights; * total lack of freedom of speech, of assembling; * continuous supervision by the state security service; * the existence of political concentration- and work-camps (in the years of Stalinist terror); * a rigid control of the media; * very restricted freedom of travel to the so called western or imperialist countries; * frequent food and energy supply crises; * the economic system was rigidly planned and worked with heavy state subsidizing; * a very limited private sector in economy; * no free market, state controlled the price-system; Well, it’s hard to mention any advantages of living in a communist country, with the exception, perhaps of the following: * the absence of a real drive towards modernization, the controlling of information, continuous shortcomings favoured the survival of a communitarian solidarity other than that preached by communist propaganda and ideology, namely solidarity of people in their continuous needs; * there being no real competition, there was less envy and mischief among people; * the economy being planned, centralized and subsidization there was no real fear for losing ones job, hence this was at least one point of security: * because of the general mistrust in official political and cultural events people retreated into the four walls of their apartments and within their families and circle of friends. The above characteristics varied from one communist country to the other. Thus the former Yugoslavia of Tito was considered by the Romanians to be a quasi capitalist country, because of the relatively high living standard and the general freedom there. In much the same light were seen the former German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, where the living standard was by far higher than in Romania, my country of origin; even the individual and collective rights were handled more unorthodox like in Ceausescu’s Romania, Jivkov’s Bulgaria, Enver Hodga’s Albania and Gierek’s and Jaruselski’s Poland. The liberal communism in Hungary, Kadar’s ‘goulash-communism’, was the result of the Hungarian’s revolt against the Russian occupation in 1956. The privileged situation of the population in the former GDR is partly due to the Berlin revolt in 1953, but also to the strong influences coming from Western Germany.
  7. Although I'm a teacher of German and English (BA) I deal with the nazification process of the Germans of Romania, whose example is typical for all socalled "Volksdeutsche". My websites deal with and criticize nationalism, racism, antisemitism, historical revisionism, irrationalism, fanaticism and the culture of resentment, cultivated by all groups of Volksdeutsche even after settling in Germany. There are also editions of texts taken from German archives or from "Suedostdeutsche Vierteljahresblaetter", the organ of the nazi "Deutsche Volksgruppe in Rumaenien" (1940-1944), Kritische Blaetter zur Geschichtsforschung und Ideologie Die aktuellen Themen An book of documents: Die Rumaeniendeutschen zwischen Demokratie und Diktatur. 8. My name is Klaus Popa. I was born in Brasov/Kronstadt in Transsilvania/Romania on November 11 1951. I studied Ehglish and German on the University of Cluj-Napoca in Transsilvania between 1970-1974. Starting with 1976 I worked as a teacher for English and German at different schools of my hometown. In 1989 I decided to resettle in Germany, after all the members of my family had gone to that country. Thus I arrived in Germany in the summer of 1990. In the end I got a job as a teacher of German for ressetlers from Russia of German origin, which job I continue to do with interreptions until today. My interest in history goes back to the period in Romania, where I dealt especially with the mythology and religion of the ancient Greeks and Romans and with topics of mediaeval Transsylvania, especially with the Germans of Transilvania, who had been settled there by Hungarian kings in the late 11th and early 12th century. My interest in these topics is unbroken until today, although I turned to the study of the Nazism of the Germans of Romania - starting this topic in 1997. The results of latter studies are to be seen in the biannual review "Halbjahresschrift fuer suedosteuropaeische Geschichte, Literatur und Kultur". Some of my contributions are presented on my websites "Kritische Blaetter zur Geschichctsforschung und Ideologie" and "Die aktuellen Themen". I also deal with the text of Macrobius "Saturnalia", which I translate from Latin into German for my own use. Klaus Popa, MA.

  10. I am KLAUS POPA, born in 1951 in Brasov - Kronstadt in Transilvania/Romania. I studied English and German philology at the University of Cluj and graduated in 1974. My interest in ancient, mediaeval and contemprary history dates back to my youth, when I was fascinated by folk tales which we children were told or read. Not only the tales of the Brueder Grimm (Kinder und Hausmaerchen), but also those of Hans Christian Andersen. In the 70ies and 80ies I dedicated myself besides teaching English and German in different professional schools in my hometown of Brasov with ancient Greek and Roman mythology. As my family gradually moved to the Federal Republic of Germany, first my second brother with his family in 1981, then my mother in 1984, my father in 1987 I decided to leave the trist Romania of the last years of Ceausescus dictatorship in 1990. I have been teaching in Germany the German langiage, mainly to resettled persons from the Soviet Union of German descent. I also started studying the Nazi past of the German minority in Germany, whose result are several websites on the topic, an edition of documents (2003) and the collaboration at "Halbjahresschrift fuer suedosteuropaeische Geschichte, Literatur und Politik" edited by Dr. Johann Boehm in Dinklage/Germany, whose latest issue was just released. I have also increasingly delat with ancient Greek and Roman literature. At present I'm engaged in translating the "Saturnalia" of Macrobius into German (for my own purposes). I invite all members of the Forum to look at my main websites: Kritische Blaetter zur Geschichtsforschung und Ideologie Die aktuellen Seiten Die totgeschwiegene Dimension Klaus Popa, BA., editor of Die Rumaeniendeutschen zwischen Demokratie und Diktatur.
