What now for the ATW?

Over a year ago I was very proud that my site was accepted, recognised and listedby the ATW. I also agree entirely with their praiseworthy aims.

Very little however seems to be happening on the ATW website - is this still a functioning organisation, and if so, what is its role, and what is the role of the Virtual School advertised from the ATW site?

The ATW site has been offline for a few days now. I have asked Siobhain if Teachit is still ready and able to host it.

Interestingly, though, I have just received a message from a university teacher in Florida, who has a site at www.literaryhistory.com, and who expressed interest in joining the ATW. I suggested that she look in here to see the survival of the original ATW spirit.

Originally many of us looked for a bit of help from the DfES or its agencies to support our free Web sites. The DfES did not ever do much (other than Becta's help for the European Virtual School). But the arrival of Curriculum Online has had the opposite effect, and some teachers have now closed their sites, and started to sell subscriptions.

Really, the answer to your questions lies with us all. That is, to decide whether there is a need for the ATW or something very like it (I think there is). And then for those of us who believe in it, to support it. One solution might be to have an ATW area in here, while keeping a static portal site to link to the various member sites.

I agree. One of the reasons why Andy Walker and myself set up this Forum was to support the ATW. I have therefore began a thread that will enable us to organize ourselves in the same way as the ATW website did.

Maybe former head of departments in the ATW could start threads in the same way as I have done.

The ATW appears to have been taken over by a commercial concern which has removed rival sites from its listings. This is a shame as it was such an excellent concept.
