She stated that when Miss Odio arrived in Dallas, Texas she was quite upset emotionally and had undergone psychiatric care at Southwestern Medical School. For a while she resided with Mrs. Rogers' brother-in-law, John B. Rogers at 4626 Watauga Rd., Dallas Miss Rogers advised that Miss Odio stayed a short time with the John B. Rogers family due to the family ties that went back beyond the Batista day's in Cuba. However when she was able to bring her four children to Dallas from Puerto Rico she moved into her own apartment. Hi Robert,

It might be worth mentioning here that John B. Rogers and his wife were well acquainted with Robert Morris and General Walker. They were prominent in the Christian Anti-Communist Crusade and sat on the board of many a Freedom Forum rally.

FWIW.

There is the matter of Jack Ruby's connection to Dr Herman Ulivitch pre-assassination, that is. (Robert Howard)

Robert,

Herman Ulevitch is a pretty interesting character. He spent plenty of time at the YMCA as he was a champion squash player. One of his team mates in competition was Clint W. Murchison.

During the 1963 to early 1964 period, Ulevitch was one of the Directors of the First Citizens Bank. Two other directors were Tom Lively (discussed in another thread) and Henry Wade.

FWIW.

To continue the associations of John B. Rogers. As I said previously, he sat on the advisory board for the Dallas Freedom Forum. Chairman of this board was W.W. Lynch and Vice Chairman was J.M. Fullinwider.

Other board members included Joe Dealey, Felix McKnight, Robert Morris and Jack Crichton. Some of these guys have been discussed before on various other threads and deserve some serious looking into.

The image below shows J.M. Fullinwider (on the left) with Fred Schwarz from the Christian Anti-Communist Crusade. I know Harry Dean had some dealings with this group and hopefully he can add his perspective.

Thank's James, for the additional information, as well as the photos....I was aware in a general manner of the associations you have alluded to.....There is more to come on this thread, but I am getting behind on some "other matters," so there might be a litttle delay......

When I mentioned CACCrusade members, they were persons widely known

in Birch Society circles and fringe groups. to mention a few leading members

that I knew personally were, Herb Philbrick, western actor Roy Rogers, Gabaldon

and his friend actor John Wayne, also all the people of JBS including Robert Welch.

Gen. Walker was prominent with JBS but all were in combination. There were many

of smaller notice mentioned in JFK literature in both CACCrusade and JBS who

were at my general level of association. Philbrick sent Christmas cards to me for

several years.

Yes it is a intersting area, to say the least, kind of makes you wonder about a mess hall photo which includes among the diners, two famous people; it was taken in the Philippines, circa 1959 in Legend. [Thanks to - John Marckx, Edward J Epstein....] Correction. One famous, another infamous, you don't have it do you, James? It might provide a little comic relief.......

PS Do you know anything about Johnny Weissmuller's political beliefs?

Robert,

Is this the photo you refer to?

Sorry, I don't know anything about Johnny Weissmuller's politics.

Cheers,

Thatsa it! Decades ago I remember seeing that picture, and being really amazed....what are the odd's of Mr Red, White and Blue personified, being in the same camera shot as Lee Harvey Oswald...that sorta thing.

According to Legend the photo was taken on Corregidor, where Oswald's MAC-1 unit was stationed for a time...... Corregidor is....a famous place in WW2 lore. I believe this photo is just a freakish twist of fate, but even so it is strange in retrospect.

Anyway, I apologize for introducing a conversation piece but it is interesting.... Next up, [among other items] will be a look at "what's in a name..."

The following thread has iinformation on various Asian-American Doctors associated with Baylor among them Dr Julian Mardock

who at one time, [circa early 1960's] was the jail physician for the Dallas police during a period which intertwined with Jack Ruby's incarceration after shooting LHO. Dr Mardock's obit appeared in this morning's DMN; under the title

"Oak Cliff Surgeon treated Jack Ruby flew in WW2."

Stories of Asian American physicians at Baylor University Medical Center

Masashi Kawasaki, MD

I was invited to write about Asian physicians for the Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) centennial celebration in 2004. As the writing progressed, the meaning of "Asia" grew to include the area from the Pacific Islands to the Indian Ocean. That is as it should be. The research, interviews, conversations, and review of the doctors' written memoirs changed the challenging assignment from a task to a pleasure. This article reviews the stories of 14 Asian doctors. Twelve of these physicians trained at BUMC, and eight became members of its medical staff. Two doctors received their medical training at other institutions before their appointment to the BUMC medical staff:

• Dr. Kinya Tsukahara was one of the first Japanese immigrants in Texas . He graduated from the University of Dallas Medical Department (later Baylor University College of Medicine) in 1906 and interned at the Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium (later BUMC). In 1908, he opened a medical practice in an area that is now southeast Dallas.

• Dr. William Tsukahara, a son of Kinya Tsukahara, was born in Dallas and graduated from Baylor University College of Medicine in 1934. Like his father, he interned at Baylor Hospital. He provided medical care to Dallas citizens for more than 45 of his 68 years.

• Dr. Julian Mardock completed his internship and training in chest surgery at Baylor University Hospital in the early 1950s. Dr. Mardock's father arrived in the USA from China when he was 13 years old, came to Tyler, Texas, and opened a restaurant there in 1890. While in the US Air Force in World War II, Dr. Mardock became a decorated pilot. He attended medical school under the GI Bill.

• Dr. Kaoru Dyo experienced internment camp during World War II. He served a rotating internship at Baylor University Hospital in 1954-1955. Before his internship, he married Alice Kitamura, an employee in Baylor's hematology laboratory. He later became an Austin pediatrician.

• Dr. Masashi Kawasaki became a member of BUMC's medical staff in 1969-the first Asian doctor granted the privilege. He completed medical school and internship in Canada before postgraduate surgical studies and otorhinolaryngology specialty training in the USA. Dr. Kawasaki held leadership positions in Dallas that included a diplomatic appointment as Honorary Consul General of Japan.

• Dr. Hasmukh Shah and Dr. Indira Shah, husband and wife, emigrated from India to pursue postgraduate medical training in the USA . Hasmukh, a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, joined BUMC's medical staff in 1970 and was a member of Baylor's heart-lung transplant team. He is active in the Texas Indo-American Physicians Society. Indira established a practice in obstetrics and gynecology and became a member of BUMC's medical staff in 1974.

• Dr. Rolando Solis emigrated from the Philippines and became a fellow in cardiology at BUMC in 1968. He joined the medical staff in 1971. The first cardiologist at BUMC to perform percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and transvenous permanent pacemaker implantation, he also established the coronary angioplasty program in his home country.

• Dr. David Pita was born in Thailand to Chinese parents. After graduating from medical school in Thailand, he came to the USA for an internship and remained to complete postgraduate surgical studies and training in colon and rectal surgery. He joined BUMC's medical staff in 1972.

• Dr. Hassan Bukhari joined BUMC's medical staff in 1972. A peripheral and vascular surgeon, he came to the USA in 1964 for postgraduate training. Periodically, he returns to his homeland to perform volunteer medical work and to teach. He is active in interfaith relationships and assumes a leadership role in the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America.

• Dr. Cary Tanamachi was born and raised in Texas' Rio Grande Valley. An orthopaedist, he completed an internship at BUMC. After postgraduate studies and specialty training outside of Texas, he returned to Dallas and became a member of the BUMC medical staff in 1976. Involved in community efforts, he is proud of 18 years of service on the board of Mesquite Independent School District.

• Dr. Evangeline Cayton, a native of the Philippines, graduated from medical school in Manila. After medical training at US Naval and Air Force hospitals in the Philippines, she immigrated to the USA for an internship in Chicago. She came to BUMC for a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation. At the completion of her training in 1980, she was asked to join the BUMC medical staff.

• Dr. Paitoon Tulanon was born in Thailand and received his medical school education and internship there. He came to the USA for his residency and became a US citizen. His citizenship led to service in the US military. After his military discharge, he sought specialty training in colorectal surgery at BUMC and joined BUMC's medical staff in 1985.

• Dr. Edson Cheung, a cardiothoracic surgeon, joined BUMC's staff in 1991. Born in Hong Kong but now a US citizen, he entered the USA for undergraduate studies at the University of Houston . After graduating from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, he received his general surgery training at its affiliated hospitals and then spent 5 years at Emory University to train in cardiothoracic surgery.

The personal stories of these doctors are often tied into the history of their homelands and US history. They came from different countries and served BUMC at different times. Their backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and benevolence are contributions the Baylor community treasures.

Boy this case is just riddled with shrinks isn't it? Brings to mind the evil Dr. Louis

"Jolly" West of MKULTRA infamy. Has there ever been one scarier than he?

Dawn

Oh, but there's more.....there's more

To those who are very familiar with the assassination of Pres. Kennedy, undoubtedly at some point, Major General Edwin Walker comes to mind. He was supposed to have been a target of Lee Harvey Oswald in that April of 1963 before the assassination of JFK in November. But it is in the backdrop of events peripheral to the assassination of Pres. John F Kennedy that is the focus of this piece. The focus will be on the Warren Commission testimony of General Walker, and certain events that fell under the radar screen of the traditional timeline of events in Dallas in the months before, and after November 22, 1963.

It is more than noteworthy, that in Walker's Warren Commission testimony, he was never recalcitrant when it came to suggesting there was more than meets the eye when it came to the assassination of Pres. Kennedy. It is hard to convey how unusual that is, in itself, and although opinions are less than a dime a dozen, the immediate reaction to these comments during Walker's testimony is that extremist groups of the far right, circa 1964 were wont to add to the controversy surrounding JFK's death by suggesting that "the U.S. government was not interested in finding the killers of JFK", or that "high officials were covering up what really happened." The far right wing being those individuals who strongly identified with extremist groups such as the American Nazi Party, the Minutemen and the John Birch Society.

Suffice to say that Walker shows no such hesitation, and as will be seen, mentions various items in his Warren Commission testimony that give the impression that he was, if anything eager to go off into areas that were unusual. Major General Edwin [and General J.C. Watts, who acted as Walker's attorney] testified before Warren Commission Assistant Counsel Wesley Liebeler in Dallas on July 24, 1964. The much ballyhooed attempt on his life took place on April 10th 1963. at 9:00 P.M. according to Gen Walker's WC testimony.

There were indeed, several unexpected twist's and turns in Walker's Warren Commission Testimony. Among other things the theme of Walker's testimony, at times seemed like a shell game, where what is being discussed "off the record" is arguably more interesting that what the court stenographer is taking down on paper. Case in point? Well, in his testimony, General Walker and Mr. Liebeler are discussing the attempt on Mr. Walker's life which took place on April 10th, 1963. William McEwan Duff is the prime topic at this point as he had been "asked to leave" the Walker headquarters while Edwin Walker was away traveling.

Liebeler: Do you have any basis for believing there was any connection between Duff and Oswald?

Walker: None at all.

The conversation turns to Mr. Coleman, a witness to the Walker shooting, the description is deceiving, in the sense that Mr Coleman didn't witness the actual shooting, but saw two individuals in a car leaving after hearing the shot's fired. What is equally misleading is that Mr. Coleman was fifteen years old.

At this point in Walker's testimony, there is an "off the record" discussion. When testimony is resumed there is something of a flap between Walker and Liebeler, when Liebeler asks Walker if he has attempted to contact Mr. Coleman.

Walker's response is to insinuate that the Commission was instructed not to bring up the subject of the April 10th "shooting," a charge Liebeler categorically rejects.

Walker mentions that, Oswald and Jack Ruby had opened PO Boxes where mail could be sent somewhere other than their residence's, which made Wesley Liebeler inquire as to whether Mr Walker was alluding to a conspiratorial association between the two. At which point Walker delves into subjects ranging from information which appeared to indicate that Oswald had 'picked up' Jack Ruby's car after it had been worked on, that Oswald had rented an apartment from Jack Ruby's sister and, of course Ruby's shooting of Oswald. Then, Walker goes off into talking about the April 10, 1963 attempt on his life, in the process he mentions the death of a Professor William T. Wolf, who perished in a fire. According to Walker, Professor Wolf was burnt to death in the fire and this happened about 8 day's after the attempt on his life. [it was actually 10 day's later] Walker indicates his death seemed strange in that he was trapped in the fire despite the fact that he was on the first floor, when the fire occurred. Liebeler asks Walker if he thinks his death suggests a conspiracy "between Oswald and Ruby", to which Walker cites a couple of unusual deaths in the same sentence in relation to "what was going on in Dallas."

Dallas Morning News - April 19, 1963 Fire Death Of Professor Gets Probe

University Park fire investigator's probed Thursday the fire death of William Thompson Wolf, 32 year old history Professor at Southern Methodist University. Wolf's body was found early Thursday in the hallway of his duplex apartment at 6618 Dickens three blocks from the university campus. It marked University Park's first fire fatality for 1963, and only the third for the city in the last seven years. Fire Marshall Fred L. Chambers said the 12:25 A.M. blaze caused about $ 7,000 damage to the front living room and kitchen. He said it appeared Wolf attempted to retrieve some valuables, when he was overcome. Justice of the Peace David L. Johnston ruled death accidental, resulting from burns and fire exposure. [/i]

In the October 5th, 1963 Edition of the Dallas Morning News, Deen's death was carried in a short article with the heading

"Dr. Deen Found dead at home" Dallas Morning News October 5, 1963

The body of Dr. George C. Deen, 30 was found Friday in his apartment on the grounds of Timberlawn Psychiatric Center 4600 Samuell Blvd where he had been a resident physician since 1962. Justice of the Peace W.E. Richburg ordered an autopsy before returning a verdict. Dr. Joe W. King, also a resident physician, told police that when Dr Deen failed to report for duty, he went to his apartment and discovered the body slumped in a chair. Deen was head of a bi-racial group in Dallas known as the Committee for Full Citizenship, under his leadership the Committee this fall urged every eligible Negro student in the Dallas area to apply for admittance to an integrated school. Survivors include his wife; family Dr and Mrs C.C. Deen of Wichita Falls.

Beyond interesting, is the fact that in that time period, George DeMohrenschildt lived five doors down from William Thompson Wolf's residence on Dickens Ave., which is so close to SMU it is practically a "stones throw away from the campus." DeMohrenschildt lived at 6628 Dickens Ave., Wolf as indicate above, lived at 6618 Dickens.

See

http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=662...;name=&qty=

As it turns out Deen's death was not the first one at Timberlawn in 1963. In July a patient named Melvin Lehrmann had been discovered dead there.

"Patient Found Shot to Death" July 11, 1963 The article stated

A 35 year old patient at Timberlawn Psychiatric Hospital 4600 Samuell Blvd. was found dead late Tuesday night, shot in the right temple. A .22 caliber pistol was lying near the body.

The victim was Melvin Lehrmann of Ft. Worth. Timberlawn authorities said Lehrmann was last seen at 7:00 P.M. by a nurse and that his body was discovered in a restroom two hours later by another patient. Justice of the Peace W.E. Richburg ruled the death a suicide.

But as it turns out, Timberlawn Psychiatric Hospital had a link to Jack Ruby's Sovereign Club in the person of --- Ann Marie Carlson, aka Mrs Carl William Carlson, who at one time, was a nurse at Timberlawn Psychiatric Hospital. According to Ann Marie, her husband Carl, was a musician who came to Dallas in 1959 and sought employment at Sovereign Club. She said her husband was a former member of Ruby's band, Carl Carlson denied it.

Warren Commission Document 933 is a 15 page memo dated 05/15/64 from J Edgar Hoover to J Lee Rankin, [179-40002-10174] the subject is Paul Carroll. In this document, Hoover is submitting to Rankin, FBI Reports on Mr Paul Carroll. If you believe that fascism died at the end of World War 2, you views may be somewhat challenged after reading the next paragraph

Why, you ask? Read on......CD933a dated May 1, 1964, begins by stating:

"On November 22, 1963 Paul Vottler Carroll appeared at the El Paso office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and advised SA Robert G. Abegglen that he had been active in Republican Party affairs for several years having been chairman of the Young Republican's at the University of Texas in Austin Texas, and having attended several Young Republican National Convention's. He said it was his opinion there was a conspiracy between the John Birch Society and the American Nazi Party in 1961 or early 1962 to take over control of the Republican Party and then to take over the Government of the United States, by force, if necessary. CARROLL stated this "enterprise" was made up of retired Army personnel, but he could not furnish any facts to substantiate this allegation."

The report continues....."CARROLL advised that he was born Dec. 19, 1933 in Waco, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas, at Austin, Texas. CARROLL stated he has 'received extensive treatment in Dallas, Texas and is presently receiving treatment from Dr Edmund P Jones in Timberlawn Psychiatric Hospital' Paul Carroll was, according to court documents admitted to Timberlawn Psychiatric Hospital on April 18, 1962 and, on June 19, 1962 began to be treated by Dr. John H. Reitmann. In the language of CD 933, "the event which precipitated" Paul Carroll's admission to Timberlawn, was an overdose of dexedrine, an amphetamine. This we are told, was a result of Carroll's a dependency problem with his father," in the words of Dr. Reitmann, which combined with Reitmann's diagnosis of Carroll as being a paranoid schizophrenic.

The issue of Carroll's dependability regarding his statements in person to the FBI are compounded by an intriguing conflict between Austin Justice of the Peace Curtis Lacy, and two Austin attorney's on one side and Paul Carroll on the other. The reason for this conflict was due to statements made by Carroll to the effect that he had been planning on writing a book about the assassination of President Kennedy and appeared to have made statements that he had been paid by 'someone' to no longer work on the book, although it appears by Carroll's comment's that he had never actually began the book to begin with. WC Document 933 in part, explores this conflict between the two parties in the context of whether anyone had attempted to prevent Carroll from revealing what he knew about President Kennedy's death, and whether his statements were fact or delusional, in light of statements by Dr.'s Reitmann and Jones that Carroll was a paranoid schizophrenic who overdosed at one time from taking large amounts of dexedrine. In CD 933b there is one sentence that reads "during the time CARROLL was treated by Doctor REITMANN he was considered by REITMANN to be a paranoid schizophrenic."

But what appears to have been driving Lacy and the two attorney's, [brooks Holman of Austin and Bob Looney of Houston,Texas], to have CARROLL appear in court is what is mentioned at the end of CD 933; there we read, "LACY stated he has been informed that DAN RATHER, newspaper correspondent, Washington, D.C.

had made a statement that CARROLL is known to have made investigation about 11 months ago in El Paso, Texas and Mexico regarding a proposed assassination plot and was possibly being paid $ 10,000 by the Rockefeller Foundation for his work."

The next paragraph reads "LACY advised that at present he planned to hear only CARROLL's testimony and thereafter he would determine if he would order a 'Court of Inquiry.' He desired that CARROLL appear before him immediately."

Hi Robert,

Interesting that you mention Paul Carroll as I think he is a most curious player in all of this. For a time, he was the Chairman of 'The Texas Tribute to Freedom' organization and during the late 1950's and early 60's in this capacity, worked closely with a man named Manning Grinnan who amongst other things was the Director for the 'Dallas International Rescue Committee'.

Manning Grinnan was also President of 'The Dallas Association For Mental Health'. Manning made this comment after the assassination.

"It is ironic that President Kennedy, the first Chief Executive in American history to recognize officially that mental illness is the nation's No. 1 health problem, should have fallen victim to an assassin so clearly recognizable as emotionally handicapped."

Curious to note here is that Manning's brother was Joe Grinnan (yes, that Joe Grinnan).

Dare I say it......Involvement with individuals in the mental health profession, can be hazardous to your mental health.......Basically it is information along the lines of what you posted.....[while I wasn't aware of that specifically] that led to the idea of creating this thread to begin with; additionally while John Simkin has brought to the Forums attention the reason why "historians are reluctant" to make assertions that challenge "official history," I can honestly & w/o embellishing refer to myself as an "amateur historian," in that vein....I do not find myself immersed in the dynamic of ruining my career by pointing out historical realities, irrespective of whether they are an "inconvenience" to certain parties. If one wishes to examine a similar historical dynamic to 11-22-63, one might read what they were sying about the death of Mary Queen of Scots, when it happened and the facts as they are "quite well known" to historians of the 20th century, and now the 21st century. Juxtapose the words "John Dulles" with "Sir Francis Walsingham" and you may get a general idea of the disconnect between "official history" & "history in real time."

If the reader conveniently wants to dismiss my assertions as the product of a conspiracy theorist, one might find the gonads to verify that I speaketh the truth

http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/~jmcgill/project.html

History books show there have been proverbial Lee Harvey Oswald's in other places in the time/space continuum....See J'Accuse Alfred Dreyfus or paraphrased Where is Emile Zola when you really need him?

If one really wants to challenge their dedication to reality, one might meander over to the thread on D.H. Byrd...

The Lone Nut Assassins

To capture a snapshot in time, I selected a book from the era, to include what people were reading via mainstream media about some of the "lone-nut assassins," of the 1960's; of which the topic of this thread would not be complete without, I submit, at least a cursory glance. While this section of the Education Forum, is indeed entitled the JFK Debate, the thread would not be complete, without at least a look at what was being written, disseminated and read about, the aforementioned individuals.

Disclaimer: I hope that John Simkin will allow this post as is, as, I will not be exploring the assassinations of RFK and MLK in this section, de facto; but may include some information which potentially demonstrate parallel's and/or associations, re the psychiatric community or 'other obscure' areas hitherto unexplored, in a general sense of relation to the debate of which, this section of the Forum is, entitled.

It seems only fitting that the following biographies, are from:

Time-Life's "This Fabulous Century 1960-1970 - Terror and Doubt" 1970 Time, Inc.

Name Lee Harvey Oswald

Date of Birth October 18, 1939

Place of Birth New Orleans, La.

Physical Characteristics Height, 5-'9'; Weight 160 lbs.; Hair, brown and slightly kinky; Eyes, blue-gray; Build, Slight.

Idiosyncrasies Lean face, dark ample eyebrows, prominent forehead, tight, crimped mouth, small, weak chin. Arrogant gestures, alternating with calm self-possession

Family Background Father an insurance salesman, died two months before Oswald's birth. Mother worked; was "so wrapped in her own problems, she never really saw her son's," according to a probation officer.

Personality Traits Shy and awkward, unmannerly opinionated contrary resentful suspicious withdrawn. Left school after ninth grade, and at age 17 enlisted in Marines. there he was unpopular and earned the nickname "Ozzie Rabbit." At 19 sought and got transfer to the inactive reserve, saying he had to care for his mother. Promptly emigrated to U.S.S.R. Arriving in Moscow, applied for Russian citizenship, but failed to get it. later wrote that he was being held in the U.S.S.R. against his "will and expressed desires." Returned home after two and a half years, bringing a Russian wife and a four month old daughter - but still could find no niche. Was hired and fired from a series of jobs; tried and failed to go to Cuba. Built up a jumbled array of grudges; thought of people as "pawns locked up in a system;" saw himself faced with an "enemy" with whom he intended to grapple.

In 1957 when Sirhan was almost 13, family emigrated to U.S., settled without becoming assimilated -- in Los Angeles, in ethnically mixed lower-middle-class neighborhood. After seven months the father abandoned the family, returned to Jordan and subsequently divorced the mother.

Personality Traits Few, if any friends, but kept a diary in which he entered names of girls and boys whom he evidently wished to have as friends. Hated Zionists and Jews, whose treatment of Arabs he equated with Nazi treatment of Jews. Proud of not being a U.S. citizen, boasted of being Jordanian Arab. Angry and resentful of the rich, the successful and those in authority. In Pasadena City College, which he attended for a year and a half, said he wanted to be a journalist, diplomat or teacher; later gave up those ideas to try to be a jockey, at which he failed. Talked of going back to Jordan and being somebody big, helping his people.
