ODESSA, May 06 /ITAR-TASS/. The southern Ukrainian city of Odessa will continue burying those who died in a fire in the regional Trade Unions House set ablaze by radicals a few days ago. Funerals that started on Monday were suspended because Odessa forensic medical experts needed extra time to finish the identification of 37 victims, whose bodies were found in burnt-out offices inside the building, and determine the cause of their death.

According to officially published data, five people were shot dead, eight died when they fell from a height in an attempt to escape fire and those who pursued them, and 24 people died from burns and carbon monoxide poisoning. The death toll includes six women. Those who died were aged 18-62.

MP Oleg Tsaryov and a number of other Ukrainian politicians have already told journalists that the authorities deliberately understated the death count in fear of popular unrest. Local media said, with reference to unnamed law enforcers and forensic medical experts, that 72 or even 116 were killed.

The reports make the atmosphere in the city even tenser. The authorities have reinforced the protection of strategic facilities, canceled all mass events scheduled for Victory Day and taken other measures.

The parents of schoolchildren were told not to let their children go outside in the evening and teach them not to lift unknown objects from the ground.

Riots started in Odessa on May 2 after soccer fans who came from the city of Kharkov, as well as Right Sector far-right ultranationalist movement radicals and so-called “Maidan self-defense” representatives from Kiev organized a march along city streets that resulted in clashes with federalization supporters.

As a result, radicals set ablaze the Trade Unions House, where their opponents hid, and a tent camp where activists were collecting signatures for a referendum on Ukraine’s federalization and for the status of a state language for Ukrainian. The authorities said the clashes and fire left 46 people dead; more than 200 sought medical assistance.

Ukraine saw a coup in February after months of anti-government protests. New people were propelled to power amid riots as President Viktor Yanukovich had to leave Ukraine citing security concerns. Russia does not recognize the de facto Ukrainian authorities, who appear unable to restrain radicals and ultranationalists.

The Crimean Peninsula, where most residents are Russians, held a referendum March 16 in which it overwhelmingly voted to secede from Ukraine and reunify with Russia. The accession deal with Moscow was signed March 18.

After Crimea’s reunification with Russia, protests against the new Ukrainian authorities in Kiev erupted in Ukraine’s Russian-speaking southeastern regions, with demonstrators demanding referendums on the country’s federalization and taking control of some government buildings.

Kiev has been conducting an antiterrorism operation in eastern Ukraine apparently aimed to clamp down on federalization supporters. Russia has condemned the operation.

The above reminds me of watching the riots in kiev on the continuous live streams online, day after day (night to europe) during the riots that led to the coup. For some time I wasn't sure what position to take.
When I saw the fascist salutes, emblems, heard the discordant* 'drumming' by and flags hoisted by the people who were throwing molotovs and rocks at the very stoic police facing them day after day it became clearer and clearer that the wests media were not telling the truth as the next days headlines (in the west) repeatedly told a different story of a repressive regime oppressing peaceful demonstrators. Stories started to filter through about the fascists brutalities against civilians. It seems to me that moderate ukrainians were being marginalised by the fascists through beatings and intimidation and while many were rightly concerned about corruption and hard living conditions their aspirations were being and have been completely suppressed by a far worse regime that the violent actions of the day ushered in. IOW in the end it was a reactionary coup and not a radical popular revolution at all. The composition of the coup appointed junta further supports this pov.
The following defensive posture by those who choose not to accept this coup and them being branded terrorists and are now under attack by that junta using disaffected lumpens in martialed national guard units in this repression further creates a situation, while lauded by some western 'leaders' and news commentators, in fact introduces a further far more insidious dynamic.
These people have no compunction about killing and they are being taught to do so in a disciplined fashion while lauded by 'cookie diplomats'.
The junta shows no sign of protecting the population of ukraine from these gangs further indicating that they and their sponsors are indeed fascists, or at least fascist sympathisers, who are just as bad, or arguably worse. A bit like the alliance between Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, Bush et al and such as the America First'ers and Adolph Hitler.
That large regions of ukraine reject the junta is of no surprise nor is the attack on them by the junta.
The MSM can clearly be seen as complicit. A stark reminder to all.

ODESSA, May 7. /ITAR-TASS/. Deputy chief of regional Interior Ministry department Dmitry Fuchedzhi has been detained in Odessa on Wednesday. He is accused of nonfeasance during the May 2 riots. He is also held responsible for releasing federalization supporters that were detained in the Hoise of trade unions.

“In the nearest time, there will be some another high profile detentions in Odessa,” Ivan Katerinchuk, the newly appointed chief of Odessa regional Interior Ministry department, commented on Fuchedzhi’s arrest. He added that the case in hand is “bandits disguised as Right Sector and Maidan self-defense activists”.

Oleh Makhnitskyi, acting Prosecutor General of Ukraine, also claimed about the implication of the police in the Odessa events. “We can say that this was a staged action. And we can talk not only about the nonfeasance of the police, but about its implication,” he told journalists.

What happened in Odessa

According to local authorities, as a result of unrest and a fire in Odessa, 46 people died and over 200 sought medical aid on May 2. Unrest in Odessa started Friday afternoon after a mass brawl on the Grecheskaya Street. The fight was started by football fans, who came from Kharkiv, Right Sector activists, as well as Maidan self-defense forces from Kiev that intended to stage a march on the streets of Odessa. They triggered clashes with Ukraine’s federalization supporters.

The radicals set on afire a tent camp on the Kulikovo Field, where signatures for holding a referendum on Ukraine’s federalization and the status of Russian language were collected. People from the tent camp hid in the House of trade unions, where the fire broke out.

According to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, the house was set on fire by activists who occupied the building. However, multiple video recordings from the site of the incident and eyewitnesses point to the fact that the fire broke out after bottles with flame liquid were thrown at the building.

KIEV, May 19 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian investigators have discovered traces of chloroform in garbage and ashes removed from the House of Trade Unions in Odessa, the site of a fire where dozens of activists died on May 2, acting Ukrainian Deputy Interior Minister Vitaliy Sakal said Monday.

“There is an expert conclusion that in the garbage and ashes, where there were already around 30 investigations held on the premises; a like substance of chloroform was discovered. It is used during surgeries, but how it ended up in the Professional Union Building is currently being investigated,” Sakal said during a press conference.

He said that inhaling large amounts of the substance leads to respiratory arrest, which is what happened during the fire, in which 32 people died from an unknown substance, not extreme temperatures.

Clashes in Odessa broke out on May 2, between pro-federalization activists on one side and fans of the Odessa and Kharkiv football teams on the other, joined by Euromaidan activists.

Pro-Kiev radicals joined by Right Sector militia blocked the anti-government protesters in the House of Trade Unions and set the building on fire by hurling Molotov cocktails inside. Those trapped inside had little chance of extinguishing the blaze, as fire hoses in the building were out of order.

Six died of bullet wounds, 32 suffocated, and 10 fell to their death by jumping through the windows of the burning building. Another 214 were injured. According to some information, another 48 are reported to be missing.

No plausible explanation has been offered for the fact that many of those who died did not try to take refuge on upper floors or the roof, prompting rumors that they were poisoned by an unknown chemical.

Lootings have broken out from a march which Right Sector far-right extremists and radicals from the so-called Maidan self-defense forces who came from Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, staged together with football fans from the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. They set on fire a tent camp which was collecting signatures for a referendum on Ukrainian federalization and granting a state language status to the Russian language. Activists from the tent camp took a shelter at the House of Trade Unions which was set on fire by attackers.

Forty-eight people died and 247 were wounded in riots. Several Ukrainian politicians stated that Kiev authorities understated the number of fatalities which may be up to 116.

Last week Odessa regional council banned illegal armed units from staying in the region. “Radicals should not stay in the city streets, this is my attitude to the Right Sector,” Governor Ihor Palitsa said.

Dismissed Odessa police chief Petro Lutsyuk also demanded that Right Sector gunmen be removed from Odessa. “There are many uncontrollable people in Kiev, and it was decided to send these units to Odessa. We do not need them. They create an unstable situation,” he said.

Anti-fascists massacred in Odessa to be remembered, honored

November 2 marks six months since the horrific massacre of at least 48 anti-fascist activists and trade unionists in Odessa, Ukraine.

On May 2, neo-Nazi gangs directed by the U.S.-backed Kiev junta attacked an Occupy-style protest encampment in the multinational port city of Odessa. After the fascists set fire to the camp on Kulikovo Field, activists fled to the nearby House of Trade Unions.

Pro-coup goons set fire to the building and shot at people through the windows. Many who fled from the burning building were beaten to death by the fascists.

Although the massacre was videoed and many of the culprits plainly identified, none have been brought to justice. Meek “official” inquiries have been stonewalled by the Ukrainian Interior Ministry and police agencies.

On the six-month anniversary, activists around the world will remember this crime and honor the victims with memorials, rallies, meetings and photo exhibits.

In New York, the International Action Center has called for a protest at the U.S. military recruiting station in Times Square on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m., to remember the murdered anti-fascists. Participants will tell Washington, Kiev and the corporate media to stop the cover-up of those responsible for the massacre.

The demands of the protest include: an independent investigation of the massacre and those responsible; autonomy and self-determination for Odessa and all of southeast Ukraine; stop U.S. money and weapons to the Kiev dictatorship; stop the war against the people of Donetsk and Lugansk; end NATO expansion, military threats and sanctions against Russia; and freedom for Odessa activists Vlad Wojciechowski and Nikolai Popov and all political prisoners.

Odessa survivor remembers

Odessa Regional Council Deputy Alexei Albu is a survivor of the May 2 massacre. A member of socialist Union Borotba (Struggle), he now lives in exile in Crimea, where he was forced to flee under threat of arrest following the neo-Nazi attack. Albu is a co-founder of the Committee to Liberate Odessa and the investigative website 2May.org.

Albu recently spoke with the newspaper Mirror of Crimea about his experiences. He recalled: “I came to the Kulikovo Field an hour before the attack. There were about 200 people, among them many of the older generation. After some time, a small group returned from [a confrontation with the neo-Nazis on] Greek Street, including my friend Andrew Brazhevsky. That was the last time I saw him alive; he later jumped from a window of the burning House of Trade Unions and was killed by the fascists.

“When we were attacked,” said Albu, “the Kulikovo activists decided to take refuge in the building. … I was one of the last who went in, when the attackers started shooting. Inside, people built a barricade of furniture. Nobody expected that a massacre would begin. We thought there would be a fight, mayhem or something like that, but not mass burning and shooting.

“I was on the second floor above the entrance and felt a suffocating smell [from tear gas]. That’s the last time I saw 17-year-old communist youth Vadim Papura, who was killed after he came down from the second floor. He, too, was finished off by the Nazis on the ground. He did not die from the fall, as the officials say.”

Albu remembered: “From the first floor someone shouted that the fascists had already made their way into the building, which started a panic. Many ran upstairs. I had previously been in the House of Trade Unions and knew some of its corridors. I realized that the roof was a dead end, and if there was a large fire, it was unlikely we could escape from there.

“I called out to those who were close to me, and we ran to the right, going down the stairs. We saw that the door leading to the courtyard had almost been knocked down by the ultra-nationalists. We began to retreat to the second floor, encountering a few more of our people along the way.”

Albu continued: “Our people climbed out through a window. I tried to swing, to distract the Nazis to buy a little time for the others. When there were only three or four left, people could no longer wait for their turn on the ladder, so we just climbed out of the window past the air conditioners and jumped into the yard.

“We were led out into the street from the courtyard, conducted through a corridor of police. The fascists constantly broke through and bashed us with whatever was handy: chains, pipes, fittings, rods, barbed wire. I fell under the feet of the police and began crawling on all fours. Someone jumped on me and sank his teeth into my left leg.

“I’m sure there were a lot more killed than the official number,” said Albu. “The mother of one of my dead comrades told me that in the morgue she was shown more than 60 bodies.

“A week after the tragedy at the House of Trade Unions, I had to leave Odessa when it became known that my arrest had been ordered,” Albu stated.

“We are trying to conduct an independent investigation, but because the Security Service of Ukraine and Interior Ministry are completely secretive about it, we are forced to work with what is in the public domain and occasional leaks.

“All parliamentary inquiries into the case of May 2 have met with no response. This again suggests that the massacre in Odessa was organized with the help of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies and their senior management,” concluded Albu.

Stop the cover-up of the Odessa massacre of trade unionists and anti-fascist activists!

Stop the U.S. Expansion of NATO!

Whereas, on May 2, 2014, at least 48 people were massacred by neo-Nazis in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa;

And, whereas those killed were anti-fascist and opposition activists, as well as trade unionists who opened the doors of the headquarters to offer protection;

And, whereas the House of Trade Unions was set ablaze by fascists who surrounded the building, destroying the labor headquarters;

And, whereas the culprits of the massacre, though clearly identifiable in numerous videos and photos of the events, have been sheltered by the government in Kiev, which came to power through a U.S.-backed coup and has received billions of dollars in direct and indirect aid from Washington;

And, whereas the survivors of the massacre have been criminalized, forced into exile in fear of their lives or imprisoned by the Ukrainian regime;

And, whereas the U.S. government and U.S. corporate media have aided Kiev in covering up the truth about the May 2 massacre at the Odessa House of Trade Unions, while continuing to misrepresent the anti-fascist struggle in Ukraine and the independent Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and imposing sanctions and threatening war against Russia;

And, whereas the crisis in Ukraine is the result of the U.S. drive to expand NATO on Russia’s borders far beyond its original membership, through a U.S.-supported coup and the funding of right-wing and fascist groups in the Ukraine;

Be it resolved,

We honor the labor and anti-fascist activists who died in Odessa on May 2, 2014, and will make their sacrifice known throughout our unions and communities;

We demand that the government in Kiev, our elected officials in Washington and the big-business media stop the cover-up of what happened in Odessa on May 2 and engage in truthful reporting on the civil war in Ukraine, the involvement of open fascists in the Kiev government and the underlying U.S. goal of NATO expansion;

We further demand that the Obama administration and the U.S. Congress immediately halt all financial and military aid to the Ukrainian junta, stop NATO military expansion in Europe, and restore food assistance and other desperately needed social programs for our communities.

New York protest says, ‘Odessa, Donbass, we are with you’

New York protest remembers Odessa’s martyrs.

A sudden cold snap and whipping winds couldn’t keep fired-up activists from protesting at the U.S. military recruitment center in Times Square on Nov. 2 to demand, “U.S. out of Ukraine!”

They came to remember the anti-fascists massacred by neo-Nazis at Odessa’s House of Trade Unions six months before, and to stand in solidarity with the Donbass People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk on the day of their first elections since declaring independence from Ukraine.

Protesters called for an independent investigation of the Odessa massacre, an immediate halt to direct and indirect U.S. aid to the Kiev government of oligarchs and neo-Nazis, and an end to NATO expansion aimed at destabilizing Russia.

Officially, 48 people are said to have died on May 2, when fascist gangs bused into the multinational port city of Odessa attacked a protest camp set up by opponents of the U.S.-backed coup in Kiev. Armed neo-Nazis chased activists into the House of Trade Unions, and then set the building on fire. They shot people through the windows and beat to death others trying to flee the inferno.

Odessa anti-fascists believe that many more died than the official tally.

Echoing the chants of courageous mourners who earlier that day broke through police lines to reach the site of the tragedy in Odessa, the Times Square protesters chanted, “Odessa, Donbass, we are with you!”

Despite the sharp winds, passersby took leaflets and many stopped to listen to speakers.

Greg Butterfield, coordinator of the Ukraine Antifascist Solidarity Committee of the International Action Center, said: “We demand to know what the U.S. role was in the Odessa massacre. Both Democrats and Republicans in Washington have been deeply involved in every aspect of the far-right coup in Ukraine and the war against the people of Novorossiya,” as the union of the people’s republics is known.

“Just like in Ferguson after the police murder of Mike Brown, in Odessa the guilty have been protected while the survivors of the massacre are repressed,” Butterfield said.

“After Congress and President Obama agreed to cut almost $10 billion in food assistance to hungry families here, the U.S. turned around and pledged $10 billion in loans to the junta in Ukraine. There is a direct correlation between U.S. imperialist attacks on the people at home and abroad,” he said.

The commemoration in Times Square was a truly international event, with activist-immigrants from Central America, Iran, Pakistan, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus rallying alongside those born in the U.S. Many held signs with photos of youths who died in Odessa and other recent young victims of U.S.-backed fascism and bigotry, like Robert Serra, a Venezuelan socialist leader, and Jennifer Laude, a transgender Filipina.

At the end of the rally, the names of the known Odessa victims were read out. After a moment of silence, black balloons were released in honor of the anti-fascists who fell on May 2.

Published online on the "tapping" Igor Bolyansky repeatedly calls Dmitry Gumenyuk, who directed the actions of "evromaydanovtsev" on the Greek area, and demands that he "turned the people" on the Kulikovo Field.

Then, as is well known, and the bloody events, which killed more than 40 people.
