John Singlaub and the Chinese Connection

Recommended Posts

As I remember the Church Report, Sanchez was both Cubela's and Artime's case officer, and was responsible for putting them together, whereby Artime created a silencer for Cubela to use on Castro. I also seem to recall that Sanchez eventually escaped the CIA and ended up in the State Department as Under Secretary for Latin America or some such thing. I hadn't thought about it much, but if this took place under Reagan/Bush/Casey it would make perfect sense.

Pat, I suspect the liklihood that Sanchez actually left CIA is slightly less than zero.

Morales operated under a State Department and later an AID cover for most of

his career.

....probably a promotion... Larry

Thanks, Larry. Nice work.

Connecting Singlaub to Sanchez may be a bit more difficult but we might be able to do it via a CIA man named Herb Weisshart who along with Singlaub, was allegedly behind the 1961-63 period of psywar and paramilitary action in Vietnam and Laos.

Sidebar: Weisshart was injured when a bomb blast rocked the U.S. Embassy in Saigon during 1965. Another man injured was Theodore Groll Jr. who ran a thing called the 'Agency for Development'. All very shadowy and undefined.

And yes, I seriously doubt Sanchez ever left the company of his spooky friends. Photographs of Nestor Sanchez are very few and far between. Here is one below. That is Sanchez on the left. The guy in the middle is Col. Joseph Stringham, another person under researched that may be able to put Sanchez and Singlaub together.

I have no idea who the guy on the right is.

FWIW.

It's worse than I thought. Sanchez wasn't undersec of state, he was a Dep Assst. Sec of Defense....more guns to play with... I found the passage below in the USA vs. Oliver North brief available online.

"In May 1986, Nestor Sanchez, DoD Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, provided the Secretary of Defense with a translation of a memorandum to President Reagan from President Azcona, calling for substantial increases in military aid for the next five years and increasing coordination between and among the U.S., Honduras' armed forces, and the leadership of the Resistance regarding UNO/FDN military operations. The letter articulated conditions for continuing to help the U.S. maintain all facets of the Resistance, including military."

This makes me wonder how many other sixties spooks immigrated into the Pentagon during the Reagan regime.

I have posted this image before but given the topic of this thread, I think it deserves a re-run.

Left to right - Andy Messing Jr., Ed Lansdale, ?, John Singlaub and Oliver North.

James

Is it possible that the man, second from the left is General Daniel Graham? In December, 1979, Singlaub and Graham headed a delegation from the American Security Council, a private right-wing organization, on a trip to Guatemala.

John,

I do believe it is Lansdale.

Regarding Daniel Graham; in late 1979 he voluntarily retired after James Schlesinger was ousted. Graham claimed great loyalty to Schlesinger and to William Colby who was also removed from office.

Another image of Graham below.

And the Burma connection. I had some info (but lost it ) that Nestor Sanchez was also in Burma. Here's some notes on two others that were in Burma:

Harold Weisberg’s Grand Jury testimony on the History matters website. – Col Castorr. Harold describes Castorr as “political agent who is keeping the Cuban people stirred up.” And “Father McChann tells the Secret Service that Col. Castorr’s actions are consistent with that of an intelligence agent.” Castorr was L. Robert Castorr of Dallas, Texas and Arlington, Virginia (and Maryland)

Harold also noted that “Col. Castorr who was a friend of General Walker told a mutual friend that he was involved in a sideline of running guns to Cuba – a profitable sideline – and this is all part of the Odio story.”

From Weberman’s Modules

Nancy Perrin had furnished reliable information to local police departments in the past and was about as reliable as "junkie hooker snitches" came. Nancy Perrin stated that RUBY smuggled B.A.R.s. In April 1964, the Dallas Police Department checked the personnel at the garages and service stations patronized by RUBY. The Dallas Police discovered that a station attendant, Donnell Darius Whitter, who serviced RUBY'S car had been arrested on November 18, 1963, for possession of two B.A.R.s which had been taken during a burglary of the National Guard Headquarters at Terrell, Texas. Nancy Perrin referred to a man named "Youngblood." Scott Malone wrote: "Another name she mentioned was transcribed by the Warren Commission first as "Ed Brunner" and then as "Eddie Brawner" from Miami. This has lead some to suspect she was referring to Eddie Browder, who was from Miami and was in Texas at the time of the meeting." The CIA: "One Robert Perrin allegedly met with JACK RUBY, Col. L. Robert Castorr and others in Dallas in 1962 to plan a Cuban smuggling operation. Robert Perrin has been accused of being a CIA gun-runner in Spain and Cuba." [CIA 9.18.68 40335-122]

And his obit:

L. Robert Castorr Association Executive

L. Robert Castorr, 92, a retired executive with a number of business groups and a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, died April 7 after a heart attack at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.

Mr. Castorr, a resident of Bethesda, was born in Detroit and enlisted in the Army Reserve at age 18 in 1930. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for a year, then after further military training and education moved to active duty in 1940.

During World War II, he served in North Africa and in the Burma campaign as an infantry combat commander. After the war ended, he briefly served as chief of staff and spokesman for Gen. George C. Marshall at the Pentagon. He left active duty in 1947 but stayed in the reserves until 1973.

Mr. Castorr worked as a field manager for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and as national field manager and assistant to the president for the National Federation of Independent Business, handling legislation and public relations, through the 1960s. He later moved to the Small Business Administration, where he was assistant to its president and oversaw its program for retired executives. In later years, he worked for himself as an international trade consultant.

Mr. Castorr was an official with the World Conference of Mayors during the 1980s. He served as an officer with the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, the Knights of Malta, and was a member of the Order of St. Stanislas, a philanthropic organization.

His first two marriages, to Dorothy Castorr and Gertrude A. Castorr, ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Dorothy Vasco Castorr of Bethesda; two sons from his second marriage, William Castorr of Battle Creek, Mich., and John Castorr of Dallas; two brothers; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

And Conein…

LUCIEN CONEIN

Lucien Emile Conein (born, November 29, 1919), a veteran of the French Foreign Legion, described his military career: "Starting as a recruit I September 1941, was advanced to a Non-Commissioned Officer in 1942, and later chosen for Officer Candidate School February 1943. Graduated and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant February (OSS) on July 26, 1943. Served European Theater of Operations October 1943, to December 1944. Parachuted behind enemy lines in civilian clothes, France, August 1944. Transferred China, Burma, India Theater, February 1945. Assigned German occupation February 1947 to August 1953, as an intelligence officer. 1953 to 1956 served as U.S. Military advisory group, Vietnam, as intelligence and operations officer."

By 1982 Barry Seal was bringing in drugs to the United States on behalf of the Medellin Cartel. He established a base at Mena airport in Arkansas. Seal told friends that he once made $1.5 million on a single cocaine flight. Seal worked directly for Sonia Atala, the CIA protected drug baron (Michael Levine, The Big White Lie: The CIA and the Cocaine/Crack Epidemic). To carry out these flights, Seal obtained two new multi-million dollar Beech Craft King Air 200s. According to Daniel Hopsicker, these aircraft were purchased by a Phoenix-based corporation that acted as a "front" for John Singlaub.

Jack Anderson served alongside Capt. John Birch, Capt. Mitchell L. WerBell III, S/Sgt. Robert Emmett Johnson, USMC, Major John Singlaub, Lt. Roger Hillsman, et al. !! (Gerry Hemming)

It's a pity that Gerry seems to be no longer posting as this information is tantalising to say the least.

I assume Gerry means they were all in China during the Second World War. John Birch was a member of the China Air Task Force when he was killed in 1945. Anderson worked as a foreign correspondent in China. He disliked this work and managed to get involved with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). This is where he made his future CIA contacts including Phil Graham who I suspect helped him get the job with Drew Pearson on the Washington Post in 1947. Mitchell WerBell was also a member of the OSS and saw action in Burma and China. Singlaub was in the OSS in France but moved to China in the final stages of the war. Unfortunately I know very little about Robert Emmett Johnson's war record. Hillsmen was in China but I do not see this as being significant. However, it might have helped shape his views on Vietnam where he was a JFK dove. As a result he was sacked by LBJ after the assassination.

There were other interesting figures in China working with the OSS. This includes William Pawley, Tommy Corcoran, Whitey Willauer, Claire Lee Chennault, Paul Helliwell, E. Howard Hunt, Lucien Conein and Ray Cline.

Why was this important?

(1) This was the first time that these right-wingers joined forces with drug lords to fight communism. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, these OSS members in China were paid for their work with five-pound sacks of opium. When most of these became members of the CIA they continued this relationship with criminals. This was especially true of Cuba in the 1950s and South-East Asia in the 1960s and 1970s. Ted Shackley became the leader of this group and as well as the assassination of JFK they were also the core members of the Iran-Contra scandal.

(2) The other reason China is important is that it was the first time that the intelligence services began to do "private jobs" for right-wing businessmen. Tommy Concoran was the main instigator of this program. Later William Pawley was to play a central role in this. This started in Guatemala in 1954 but then spread to other countries in Latin America. Operation 40 was used to assassinate people who got in their way.

There is another interesting character who was with Paul Helliwell and company in China in the 1940s. His name is John Paul Hammerschmidt. He became a congressman in Arkansas. In fact he owned a ranch close to Mena airport In 1982 Barry Seal was bringing in drugs to the United States on behalf of the Medellin Cartel. Seal moved his base of operations from Louisiana to Mena, an obscure airport in the secluded mountains of western Arkansas. Seal told friends that he once made $1.5 million on a single cocaine flight. Seal worked directly for Sonia Atala, the CIA protected drug baron (Michael Levine, The Big White Lie: The CIA and the Cocaine/Crack Epidemic). It is also claimed that Seal's fleet of planes to ferry supplies to Contra camps in Honduras and Costa Rica. His planes also made return trips to airstrips in the mountains of Colombia and Venezuela. According to Roger Morris and Sally Denton (Partners in Power): "His well-connected and officially-protected smuggling operation based in Mena accounted for billions in drugs and arms".

Hammerschmidt was one of George Bush's closest friends (they had met in Houston in the 1960s). Daniel Hopsicker claims that secret meetings setting up the Mena drug and weapons pipeline were held on Hammerschmidt's ranch.

Another associate of Paul Heliwell's in China was Clarence Holden. He was involved in setting up CIA fronted companies with Helliwell. This included Bosco Resources Corporation. In 1973 Bosco's assets were nationalized without compensation by the Libyan Government.
