A.J. Hidell

"A.J. Hidell" is an anagram for "Jade Hill."

The Jade Hill Pagoda is a landmark on a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake, in the heart of Hanoi, connected to the shore by a red arched bridge.

Hoan Kiem Lake is more than the geographical heart of Hanoi: it long has been the spiritual heart of Hanoi, called simply bo ho—"the shore of the lake"—by the locals.

Considering what was coming, I'm sure that Oswald's CIA handlers had a good snicker up their sleeves when they had him use the name.

(Let's see: LBJ probably did it—do I have that right, Everett?)

Another good belly laugh must have been had while "Hidell" was buying the money orders to purchase the rifle. They wre bought very early in the morning, Dallas post offices opened at 8am, and not before, yet Oswalds time sheet shows he clocked in before eightam on that day. he must have been doing some of this overtime we keep hearing about to account for discrepencies in his cash flow.......Steve.

Everyone should read Philip Agee's INSIDE THE COMPANY...CIA DIARY.

On page 137 he describes how the CIA invents PSEUDONYMS for operatives. The names are

highly UNIQUE, so that it is unlikely that few other persons in the world will have an identical

name. After assignment of the name, the operative will thereafter use that name in all

operations and reports.

The pseudonym assigned to Agee was JEREMY S. HODAPP.

Do you see a pattern?

Agee's book is a must for anyone wanting to understand agency operations and cryptonyms.

He unlocks many code names you may have read about.

So, Jack... how do you explain Phillips' alias, Michael C Choaden?

Computer generated?

Hardly in Phillips case. Yet it does have some things in common... particularly with some of the names associated with Oswald which were actually slight mispellings of German words, in that this one comes from the coloquial Spanish word "Choad", which means "penis". Phillips was a real crack-up.

Agee's book is a must for anyone wanting to understand agency operations and cryptonyms.

So... did he tackle this one?

Jack

According to Agee, pseudonyms were ASSIGNED BY THE AGENCY, not

chosen by the agents themselves.

However, David Atlee Phillips and his friend E. Howard Hunt are known

to have privately used the names BISHOP and KNIGHT, a reference

to chess pieces. And in Cuban operations, Hunt used the name EDUARDO.

I never heard reference to Phillips as Michael C Choaden.

Jack, he used that name in official cables from MC regarding Alverado allegations and other matters - therefore was not being used "privately". It does not meet the criteria Agee set out except for the use of a middle initial and a surname no one else on earth could lay claim to. That last criteria is also true of the name "Drittal" used as a character reference on coupon for purchase of pistol by "Hidell".
