Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and the JFK Assassination

Recommended Posts

During the War the OSS [apparently on Donovan's initiative] joined some forces with the NKVD. Then each spied on the other - the Soviets apparently getting the upper hand here. A few fascinating glimpses of this. Seems it has a lot to do with Donovan being axed and the rise of Dulles and many other such changes at the end of the war. Here is one short document. Each had spies in the other - but the Russians were much more successful at this and ran circles around the Americans in most respects. Part of the strong anti-communist reaction of McCarthy, Nixon and others was [in part] a reaction to this, IMO. I think this even plays into the biases and players who were later connected to the JFK assassination. [though the connections are complex and not linear!] Book 8 in this hard to get and expensive series is also on this matter:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covert_Warfare_(book)

One of the reasons that the Soviets had so much success was that they recruited men and women who were playing the role of right-wingers. Meanwhile, the FBI/CIA concentrated on those who were on the left. Of course, these are the last ones that the Soviets would have used. The classic example of the this was Kim Philby. He was a well-known Marxist at university. He then pretended he had moved sharply to the right and joined neo-fascist organizations. He was then recruited by British intelligence that at the time was being run by fascist sympathizers. In reality, Philby was still a Marxist and had been recruited by the Soviets in the 1930s. He played the role so well he became close friends with James Angleton. When evidence emerged that Philby might be a spy in the late 1950s, Angleton investigated him and gave him the all clear. This allowed him to get away. Angleton never got over this and after this incident he thought everyone was a Soviet spy.

FWIW, I completely agree with you, Peter's pdf, I thought, was one of the most important bits of information I had seen lately.....

Thanks. I have more info and thoughts on this line - but - it is complex - I can sort of work it out in my mind, but can't yet find the right formulation on paper [screen]. I'll endeaver to do so in the next week. I'm making notes. The complexity is great. One also needs to see the political biases of the persons involved [not overly turned-off by socialism [or willing to work with USSR during war] v. not overly put-off by fascism types [who were ascendent after the War]. Donovan had thought about post-war German intelligence operatives in the service of the USA and had chosen Hoettl and those around him. Dulles and others who I class as not upset by fascism [only, perhaps, by Hitlerism] tapped Gehlen and his gang. In this and other internal conflicts and even assassination in one's own 'camp', suspicions grew to the point of paranoia and lasted until today, if my theory is correct. There were real moles at high levels working for the USSR in the UK, US and other 'western' intel, as John reminds us above. The US and UK had, to a lesser extent, their agents in the other camp and the US and UK were spying on each other during the War, bigtime. Angleton's paranoia likely started in the Camp A v. Camp B tensions of the war. Which side he was on is an open question.

I think the various USSR and Russian defectors and false defectors who later came to tell about LHO in Russia et al. are part of this phenomenon. I have NO doubt that Patton was murdered by this Camp A v. Camp B phenomenon, as well. In fact both camps wanted him dead for different reasons. I'm not yet sure which side did it - but both had good reason not to expose the other side after the fact. The Camp B group was ascendent after the War and came into their bloom in the new CIA. They were those most comfortable with corporate fascism, as long as it was Americanized and had never been very upset with German fascism, but got a bit upset with Hitler when he went past his assignment of destroying the USSR to trying to take-over all of Europe, if not the World. [that was to be reserved for the USA]. One of the stations that was a breeding ground for Camp B operatives to meet-up, help their Nazi pals, plunder gold, art and other things and then return to the USA to set-up all sorts of nasty things was the camp at Oberammergau, just after the War. Kissinger was there. Patton was in charge of that general part of Gemany. I believe even Clay Shaw was there, if I remember correctly - but many of those we see as OSS, CIC and G2. etc. who later were connected to Dallas directly or through their buddies passed through or interacted with Oberammergau just after the War was over.

I'll have more to say soon on this, if anyone is interested. It also ties in to the McCarthy witchhunt, the Red Scares, Hoover's obsession with Communists, why FDR [though dying slowly] may have been pushed-along on his way to the grave so the bomb would be used [the bomb by the way, I believe, needed one component only the Nazis had, and were obtained in the few days just after German defeat by various deals]. Camp B was also tied-in with the guys Seagrave and Seagrave write so wonderfully about, who were doing the same sorts of things in the East.

I have to agree that to understand the assassination of JFK if you don't know history, you're in big trouble.....

I felt that the following is another area worth perusing......

From OSS: The Secret History of America's First Central Intelligence Agency pg 199, 201; by Smith, R. Harris (1972)

“........a Harvard professor of government, Bruce Hopper had boarded a whale cruiser at New York bound for Liverpool; he was later flown to Sweden by the RAF from a secret air base in Scotland. The 50-year-old New Deal liberal became the first OSS chief in neutral Stockholm. Hopper’s capable chief of operations was Wilho Tikander, a Finnish-American attorney from Chicago. His aides included Dr. Taylor Cole, a Duke University political science professor, Washington economist Richard Huber, and New York attorney Walter Surrey.”

“After the summer of 1943, .........the British admitted that their backhanded treatment of the resistance had been in error. The following year was a period of reconciliation with MILORG, (the Norwegian military underground) and in the British view a poor time for OSS bunglers to arrive on the scene. The British sucessfully resisted American “interference” in Norwegian operations until the fall of 1943, when Colonel Joseph Haskell took command of the SO Branch in London and Dr. Hopper relinquished his own position to Wilho Tikander, his second-in-command.”

IMO, it seems as if they viewed the people in the midst of events they intended to influence as one would regard pieces on a chess board. Consider that JFK was one of those pieces, and the "monster" who he fired, was appointed by JFK's successor to help cover up "the move" that took out JFK. Potential consequences did not seem to matter much.

How did this "big fish", Edwin J. Putzell, swim under the radar of this forum's examination of OSS?

The CIA & congress: the untold story from Truman to Kennedy

By David M. Barrett

On July 21, 1956, Allen Dulles had a long, late-afternoon conversation in his office with an

academic friend who served as a part-time adviser to the CIA.

A month earlier, police in Poznan, Poland quashed a massive workers'

demonstration, killing scores of demonstrators and sparking the world's

attention. Whether citizens in Soviet-dominated

European nations would ever revolt successfully against their oppressive

governments had long been debated in CIA...

By 1956, the CIA had "some papers we've been getting out" on tensions in the

Soviet Bloc, Dulles told his friend, but "we never get anywhere.

There were "a lot of people I disagree with here in my own shop" who thought the

peoples of Eastern Europe had "lost hope and courage." The latest Polish events showed

"that the younger generation and the working people were quite willing to take risks

to improve their lot." Of course people "were killed in that Poznan affair.

You've got to take some risks, you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs.

Dozens had died in demonstrations demanding free elections in East Germany in

June 1953, for example, but (the DCI claimed),

"I got very angry with some of my people for not sending others" there after the event.

"I sometimes think people are too frightened."

In contrast, in an apparent reference to 1953 protests in Soviet-dominated

Czechoslovakia, Dulles coolly observed, thehorrible thing in that Czechoslovakian

thing was that nobody got killed. I'd have felt much better about that, and

the Czechoslovakian people would have stood much higher in the world's estimation,

if there had been a thousand or ten thousand people killed in that....

Chapter 10 Postwar Period: End of the OSS and Return to the Park Service

OSS may have won its battles in the field, but it lost its final campaign—inWashington. It was better prepared to fight armed enemies overseas than bureaucraticenemies in the nation’s capital. The OSS was terminated within a month after the end ofWorld War II.To a great extent, this was due to Donovan himself. Always the romanticadventurer, he spent much of his time away from Washington in the war zones. Unlike desk-bound, bureaucratic spymasters, Donovan, a World War I hero, enjoyed being on ornear the front lines. His restless energy, dynamism, and personal attention inspired themen and women of the OSS. An inspiring and visionary leader, he conceived ofAmerica’s first centralized intelligence and special operations agency, forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency and Army Special Forces.

Yet, Donovan was inattentive as an administrator and uncompromising as abureaucrat.1Fascinated with strategic visions and actual field operations, he was bored byorganizational detail. He personally disdained office work and left the daily running ofhis agency to others, as he had done at his law firm. Consequently, the administration ofhis rapidly burgeoning, worldwide organization was often chaotic. Because the OSS recruited imaginative, free-wheeling, assertive individuals, the organization was probably inherently difficult to manage, but Donovan’s absences and inattention made it more so.While that management style contributed to individual and local initiative, it also left the organization vulnerable to its critics. Indeed, significant dicontent existed even within the top echelon of the OSS itself. 2

2 Edwin J. Putzell, deputy and subsequent successor to Otto C. Doering, Jr., executive officer of the OSS,recalled an office rebellion

by a group of four or five of the OSS’s top administrators who sent a bluntlyworded memo to Donovan in early 1944 “suggesting that

he was a poor administrator and that the agency needed better top leadership in its day-to-day operation” and calling for major reorganization.

Donovan felt betrayed and rejected their proposal. Edwin Putzell, interviewed by Tim Naftali, 11 April 1997, pp. 2, 15,OSS Oral History Transcripts,

CIA Records (RG 263), Box 3, National Archives II, College Park, Md.

Former Naples mayor Ned Putzell dead at 90

Thursday, December 25, 2003

...The son of Edwin J. Putzell and Celeste Joseph Putzell of New Orleans, the former mayor was born in Birmingham, Ala., and his parents moved to New Orleans five months after his birth. He was educated at Tulane University in New Orleans and Harvard Law School.

He joined the firm of Donovan, Leisure, Newton and Lumbard in Washington, D.C., and New York in 1937. When he was hired by "Wild" Bill Donovan, a World War I hero, his life as a spy would begin. The attorney job was his cover story when on official business as an operative.

Putzell helped Donovan set up the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which was the precursor of the CIA. He was an executive officer of the OSS during World War II.

"We had to grow a government agency out of nothing," Putzell told the Daily News in a 1990 interview.

The OSS was responsible for collecting enemy intelligence and engaging in unorthodox warfare, which included sabotage. He took part in planting phony news articles with information about plague or fire meant to demoralize the German troops and make them think about going home.

In late 1943, Putzell even played a part in a plot to capture Adolf Hitler while on a yacht out at sea.

"We were going to surface by submarine and board the damn thing and kidnap Hitler," Putzell told the Daily News. "It was well thought out. We’d even rehearsed the damn thing."

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt foiled the plan because he thought it might set a precedent for kidnapping future heads of state.

Putzell’s career in the OSS included creating unusual explosives, some disguised as camel dung, and bringing convicted counterfeiters from prison to help doctor passports and currency. Fake Japanese currency was even manufactured to deflate the country’s money. He boasted that no OSS agent had ever been caught.

Putzell stayed with the OSS until 1945, when the agency was abolished by President Harry Truman.

He traveled the world, from the Soviet Union to Algiers to Great Britain.

He met Queen Elizabeth, Lord Louis Mountbatten, knew William Casey, the former CIA director, and Andrei Gromyko, former Soviet foreign minister. He was a close friend and former OSS colleague of Julia Child, spending summers with his wife at the chef’s home in France.

Putzell called his life a fabulous, fascinating life, but he kept his silence about his own missions.

"But I could tell you stories about being in a haystack scared to death, carrying a cyanide pill," Putzell said in the interview.

After the war, Putzell joined Monsanto Co. in St. Louis, as general counsel and vice president. While with Monsanto, he hired a young attorney who later went on to become a U.S. Supreme Court justice, Clarence Thomas. Putzell later returned to private practice as senior partner in the St. Louis law firm of Coburn, Craft & Putzell.

In St. Louis, he was vice chairman of the St. Louis County Board of Police Commissioners, president of St. Louis Social Planning Council, a board member of Manufacturers Bank & Trust Co. and St. Luke’s Hospital, among numerous community credits.

He moved to Naples with his wife, Dorothy, in 1979.

He soon became chairman of the Naples Airport Authority and was responsible for building the airport’s passenger terminal, serving between 1979 and 1983.

Putzell decided in 1986 to run for mayor. This rookie politician had never run for any elected office before.

When he scored a landslide victory, he was on his way to making big changes. He tightened up variance granting and zoning regulations, expanded community participation and created the city Code Enforcement Board. ....

I found the following highly interesting......

China in My Life By Clarence Martin Wilbur, Anita M. O'Brien

Men of history sometimes make history. The distinguished career of C. Martin Wilbur, who spent twenty-nine years as Professor of Chinese History at Columbia University, illustrates this point. Based on journals, letters, and other records, and richly illustrated with photographs from the author's private collection, China in My Life is the autobiographical account of a scholar-teacher who devoted his career to the study of Chinese history and the promotion of Asian studies in America. Over the course of sixty years, starting with his early years in China in the 1920s and 1930s, Wilbur reflects on and details the growth of an academic discipline in this country as well as vast changes in the Asian historical landscape, including developments in Japan and Taiwan over a thirty-five-year period, conditions in Korea, Hong Kong, India, Burma, and Thailand in the 1950s, and the situation in the People's Republic of China in the 1980s.

Because of uncertainties about our real status under the State Department, I decided to fly to Chungking to consult with the charge de’affaires, Walter Robertson, and establish as good a rapport with him as possible. For I had learned that the embassy personnel were jealous of our existence and of our independence during the past few months while we were, in theory, under the department. We wrote reports and sent them in without their scrutiny; used our own codes and had our own pouches. Some of the Foreign Service Officers considered the situation “intolerable.”

It was not a healthy situation.

There were other problems: the Army, or at least some local colonels, no longer wanted any responsibility for cicvilian tech reps; and the other half of OSS wanted no more responsibility for R&A. I delegated certain major tasks: Lincoln Bloomfield to be in charge of getting all outstanding reports cleaned up and sent before our military men left for home.

Page 78

On New Years Eve, I sent my last cable to William Langer the R&A chief, using our own code, attended the wedding of one of our men a Korean-American lieutenant, and after the reception piled Lincoln Bloomfield and Franklin Schaffner (my right and left hands) onto a truck for the airport, because they were flying home. Bob Chin had already sailed, taking along the material for Kay’s new coat. I urged Kay to see them because they were swell guy’s. Then I picked up our secretary, Ann Goodpasture, to take her on a New Years Eve party being put on by the Kunming OSS contingent to spend away their bar profits. Ann too, was bucking to return to stateside.

Robert.....Of course, whatever the activities of L.M. Bloomfield were in 1963 seems to be information not readily available, since the Bloomfield "collection" is outside of the United States, in Canada and is about as secure from prying eyes as George H.W. Bush's "papers" are, which, it is my understanding that the latter are exempt from the provisions of [the] F.O.I.A.

Both of these collections are about as secure as Fort Knox. And while the above passages are only for informational purposes, it is nonetheless an interesting circle of friends, especially when you consider that both E. Howard Hunt and J. Walton Moore were both, I believe, in the Kunming area of China in the same general time frame as L.M. Bloomfield and Ann Goodpasture, who, for those not aware was described as practically being Win Scott's "right hand" at the Western Hemisphere Station in Mexico City.

Ed Lopez, a former Congressional investigator who worked with George Joannides in 1978, says of Goodpasture, "in addition to her duties for Scott, ran all of David Phillips’ operations." Goodpasture was later to receive a career achievement award on the recommendation of David Atlee Phillips, who cited her for having discovered Oswald at the Cuban embassy.

The British sucessfully resisted American interference in Norwegian operations until the fall of 1943, when Colonel Joseph Haskell took command of the SO Branch in London and Dr. Hopper relinquished his own position to Wilho Tikander, his second-in-command.

Jim Root is another Forum member who is interested in Wilko Tikander....

Sorry Robert that I had not viewed this earlier. Surry was another of those persons meeting with Helms, Tikander, Shepardson, etc. in June of 1959 when Tikander speculated that an off the record mission was being planed that would be conducted via Helsinki. In October 1959 Oswald would be moving through Helsinki on his way to the Soviet Union. Interestingly the group seemded to handle Surry with kid gloves although they were interested in him reviewing some of the information provided by Tikander.

It is amazing how many people associated with the overthrow of Fidel Castro, the assassination of JFK, Watergate and Iran-Contra, were former members of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). This includes:

Ray S. Cline, Jack Alston Crichton, Lucien E. Conein, Paul Helliwell, James Angleton, Tracy Barnes, C. D. Jackson, Richard Ober, Frank Wisner, Thomas Karamessines, Richard Helms, Allen Dulles, Jack Anderson, William Colby, Henry Hecksher, Gary Underhill, Ulius L. Amoss, Mitchell WerBell, Gerry Droller (Frank Bender), Winston Scott, William Casey, Philip Graham, Louis Mortimer Bloomfield, John K. Singlaub, E. Howard Hunt, Robert Emmett Johnson, Jake Esterline, Thomas Braden, Donald Ewen Cameron, Edward Lansdale, David Bruce, Richard Bissell, Walt Rostow and Kermit (Kim) Roosevelt.

Robert

Just for the record Tykander was from the Duluth area of Minnesota, more specifically Virginia, Minn. where you will find Tykander Lake. After the war he ran for Congress from the Duluth area but was beaten badly at which time he moved to Chicago. Shortly after the 1959 meeting with Helms, Shepardson, etc. he was granted a Federal judgeship in the Chicago area.

Just to keep the record straight.

Since Tykander's name has come up again I might as well post a little speculation here that may or may not tie into the U-2 incident, Oswald and the Kennedy assassination.

Whe KGB agent, Reino Häyhänen (aka Eugene Nicolai Mäki), defecte in May, 1957, from Paris, the FBI was able to link the "hollow nickel case" to KGB agents, including Mikhail Nikolaevich Svirin (an ex-United Nations employee) and Vilyam Genrikhovich Fisher. Häyhänen was being recalled to Moscow for good, and defected on the way back in Paris. The deciphered message in the nickel turned out to be a welcome message given to that same spy, Häyhänen, upon his arrival in the United States[1]. He gave the FBI the information that it needed to crack the cipher, uncover the identity of his two main contacts in New York (Svirin and Fisher), and a nearly identically made Finnish 50 Markka coin.

In addition to Svirin and Fisher (code name "Mark"), Häyhänen (code name "Vic") told the FBI about Vitali G. Pavlov, onetime Soviet embassy official in Ottawa; Aleksandr Mikhailovich Korotkov; and U.S. Army Sergeant, Roy Rhodes (code name "Quebec"), who had once worked in the garage of the U.S. embassy in Moscow. The Soviets were able to get to Rhodes because it had "compromising materials" about him. Häyhänen and Fisher were in the United States mainly looking for information on the U.S. atomic program and U.S. Navy submarine information.

Svirin had returned to the Soviet Union in October, 1956, so was not available for questioning or arrest.

When Fisher was arrested, the hotel room and photo studio that he lived in contained multiple modern espionage equipment items: cameras and film for producing microdots, cipher pads, cuff links, hollow shaving brush, shortwave radios, and numerous "trick" containers.

Fisher was brought to trial in New York City Federal Court, indicted as a Russian spy, in October, 1957, on three counts:

Conspiracy to transmit defense information to the Soviet Union (count one)

Conspiracy to obtain defense information (count two)

Conspiracy to act in the United States as an agent of a foreign government without notification to the Secretary of State (count three)

Häyhänen testified against Fisher at the trial.

On October 25, 1957, the jury found Fisher guilty on all three counts. Judge Mortimer W. Byers sentenced him, sentences to be served concurrently, on November 15, 1957, count one: 30 years' imprisonment; count two: 10 years' imprisonment and $2,000 fine; count three: 5 years' imprisonment and $1,000 fine.

On February 10, 1962, Vilyam Fisher (aka Abel) was exchanged for the American Central Intelligence Agency Lockheed U-2 pilot, Francis Gary Powers, who was a prisoner of the Soviet Union.

I have reason to believe that Wilho Tykander had identified Reino Häyhänen in Finland during WW11 and was fully aware of his cover identiy of Eugene Nicolai Mäki prior to his entry into the United States. The real Maki family may well have been known by Tykander and may have been aided by Tukander when they returned to the Soviet Union.

I have speculated on the possibility that Rudolf Abel was a very strange character in history and have wondered if an incident needed to be manufactured to return him to the Soviet Union after his capture and trial. The U-2 Incident worked if this line of thinking is correct. Was Oswald's "mission" to the Soviet Union to help create the U-2 Incident?????? Abel was the man who collected the information on the Atomic bomb and ran the Rosenberg's. John J. McCloy believed the US should share the Atomic secrets with the Soviet Union because he believed they would get them anyway and we could build greater trust witht the Soviets by sharing what they would get anyway....McCloys advice was not taken but I speculate on if he still played a part in the "strange agreement" that I have read references to between the Soviet Union and the US. As you read this picture McCloy swiming with Krushev at Krushev's home (which he did) and the fact that the McCarthy era pretty much ended when McCarthy accused McCloy of being Red.

I'm actually surprised that GHWB's name isn't on that list of names in the first post (or even Prescott Bush). He has been shown to have filth on him regarding at least 3 of those historical events Mr Simkin named, possibly all 4 (I wouldn't doubt Watergate for a second)

WORLD MONEY POWER III

Charles Savoie

....Otto Kahn of The Pilgrims---a director of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) from 1921-1934--- was written up in “The Mirrors of Wall Street” (1933 by anonymous) on pages 164-177. Page 165 says---

“No other man I ever met---least of all a many of money---gave me such a satisfying feeling of exuberant kindliness and all-pervading love of humanity as this cosmopolitan banker.”

Considering the purges and massacres that took place in Russia most notably under Stalin, the statement about Otto Kahn appears to be a textbook case of contradiction and hypocrisy. Pages 166-167---

“Otto Kahn’s father left Germany in 1848 as a result of the revolution and came to the United States, to return to the Fatherland ten years later as a representative of an American bank. The son grew up in Germany but was sent to London by the Deutsche Bank and became a British citizen. Later he moved from the Deutsche Bank to Speyer and Company, and he was so enamored of England that he just missed going to Parliament. He led a daughter of the house of Kuhn, Loeb and Company to the altar. He became an American citizen, despite the protests of his English friends.”

In The Pilgrims Society we aren’t speaking only of American and British banks, but also of the big European banks. British nobility is heavily intermarried with European royalty which has figured prominently in ownership of those banks since the beginning. Banking families such as the Rothschilds especially, and the Warburgs, are heavy influences in many European banks. Antony Sutton, the original proponent of the discredited theory that Skull & Bones Society runs the United States, nevertheless wrote two other well researched books, “Wall Street and the Bolshevik Revolution” (reprinted 1993) and “Wall Street and the Rise of Hitler” (reprinted 1993). Glancing at financiers identified in these books we find the usual assortment of Pilgrim Society members, most of them “underground” in their Who’s Who listings (they omitted the fact) but identified elsewhere, in the three rare books mentioned in December, and in the Congressional Record. Gary Allen, in his 1976 book “The Rockefeller File,” has a chapter from pages 99 through 125 entitled, “Building the Big Red Machine,” detailing Rockefeller family support for Russian Communism over the years. It could be that empire was becoming somewhat independent of them, hence the break-up of the old U.S.S.R. into many separate nations, leaving Russia itself as the major entity. He had a similar chapter in “None Dare Call it Conspiracy” (1971, pages 111-126). The Morgan interests also supported the Communist revolutionary cause in Russia, with at least $1 million in funds identified in one instance (Washington Post, February 2, 1918).

The Associated Press, October 20, 1969, announced that International Basic Economy Corporation (IBEC), a Rockefeller brothers holding, acquired as partners in Soviet trade, industrialization and development, the firm of N.M. Rothschild & Sons of London. Possibly the two most important names in The Pilgrim Society took an interest in building Communism. On July 17, 1973, Pilgrim Society member David Rockefeller urged Congress to grant the Soviet Union most favored nation trading status (United Press International.) In Allen’s 1971 book, page 85, take note---

“In one country after another Communism has been imposed on the population from the top down. The most prominent forces for the imposition of that tyranny came from the United States and Great Britain.”

In simple language, The Pilgrims New York and London, the leading organization of super rich, spread Communism to over 12 million square miles of planet earth. The Soviet delegation to the United Nations was originally located in a mansion across from the Pilgrim Society front, the Council on Foreign Relations. That mansion was owned by Pilgrim Society member Percy Rivington Pyne II, grandson of Moses Taylor, who owned over 208,000 railroad shares as of 1864, with an average price of $240 a share---a fortune of some $50 millions! (“Secrets of the Federal Reserve,” page 65, see also “History of the Great American Fortunes.”) Percy Pyne II, born 1882, had interests in National City Bank; Delaware & Hudson Railroad; Empire Trust; Farmers Loan & Trust; Princeton Bank & Trust; Commercial Trust; Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Coal; New Amsterdam Gas; Morris & Essex Railroad; Syracuse & Binghampton Railroad; Lackawanna Steel; United New Jersey Railroad; East River Gas Company; Oswego & Syracuse Railroad and many others and was a Princeton University trustee. As of 1994 another Pyne, Eben Wright Pyne, turned up on The Pilgrims executive committee, and was an executive with National City Bank of New York (forerunner of Citigroup) and was a director of Long Island Lighting; U.S. Life Insurance; City Investing Company; Home Insurance Company; W.R. Grace & Company and others.....(/quote)

Eben Pyne 89, Who Helped Revive Suburban Railroads, Dies

Eben Pyne, a patrician banker who helped Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller mold New York’s suburban transit system from a tangle of decrepit railroad lines, died Wednesday night at his home in Hobe Sound, Fla. He was 89.

........................................

Mr. Pyne was a senior officer of a New York bank that grew into Citicorp when Governor Rockefeller recruited him in 1964 to help rescue the failing Long Island Rail Road. That railroad, the largest commuter line in the country, carrying 260,000 passengers a day on several branches, had been in a financial tailspin for years.

By the early 1960s, its principal owner, the equally moribund Pennsylvania Railroad, was looking to unload it.

The governor appointed Mr. Pyne to a panel of New York lawyers, bankers and business executives whose mission was to come up with a plan to salvage the line. Mr. Pyne was a natural choice for the task: he was a well-connected investment banker who knew about public financing, as well as a regular Long Island Rail Road rider.

Under the chairmanship of William J. Ronan, the secretary to the governor, the panel came up with a $200 million modernization program, which formed the basis of a proposal that the governor took to the State Legislature in 1965, winning its approval...

Not a Dime’s Worth of Difference

theCL 2011-07-13 Corporatism, Corruption,

....Republican Richard F. Pettigrew, opened his 1922 book "Triumphant Plutocracy: The Story Of American Public Life From 1870 To 1920" (later published as "Imperial Washington"), warning:

The American people should know the truth about American public life. They have been lied to so much and hoodwinked so often that it would seem only fair for them to have at least one straight-from-the shoulder statement concerning this government "of the people, by the people and for the people," about whose inner workings the people know almost nothing.

The common people of the United States, like the same class of people in every other country, mean well, but they are ill-informed. Floundering about in their ignorance, they are tricked and robbed by those who have the inside information and who therefore know how to take advantage of every turn in the wheel of fortune.....

....Just like Pettigrew, Quigley was an insider's insider. Not only did Quigley teach and write at Georgetown, but he was a lecturer at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Brookings Institution, the U. S. Naval Weapons Laboratory, the Foreign Service Institute of the State Department, and the Naval College. Prior to Georgetown, he worked as an instructor at both Princeton and Harvard. But unlike Pettigrew ... Quigley wrote in approval.

Party Politics and Partisan Bickering

First of all, I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to falling for partisan nonsense. Straight up. It took way too long and way too many distortions, broken promises, and bald-faced lies, to get me to open my eyes. I bought into the ridiculous theory of the "lesser evil." I wanted to "beat the Democrats" too. I sought unity "for the good of the party," hesitantly embracing the "11th Commandment," and then made excuses for their "spineless" and "stupid" actions (or lack thereof). Yes, I'm just another flawed human being.

But no matter who or what we're talking about, I can only be disappointed for so long. A plan, a strategy, an idea, a theory, whatever, eventually either works, or it doesn't. Not once in my lifetime have Republicans reversed the growth of the leviathan/garrison state. Not even once in the last century for that matter. To paraphrase Albert Einstein, continued support of Republicans while expecting different results is just plain stupid. Voting Republican doesn't work.

Any dispassionate look at our political history will tell you the differences between the two parties are trivial at best, and completely devoid of substance. Both parties believe that government comes first at the expense of the individual. Both also favor a technocratic bureaucracy, imperial presidency, corporatist economy, welfare state, deficit spending, bailouts, money printing, and war anytime, anywhere, and at any cost.

In reality, Republicans have rarely been "spineless" and/or "stupid," but simply good actors at the Kabuki Theater on the Potomac. Sure, you may think they're stupid, and the popular pundits might agree with you too. But the joke's on you ... because they never intended to accomplish what they promised you in the first place.

Controlled by the Same Power Cabal

Bickering with your neighbor over which party is best only divides "We the People" to the benefit of the power seeking psychopaths. Neither party gives a damn about what we want. As Professor Carroll Quigley pointed out in his book (linked above), the Democratic and Republican parties are both controlled by the same power cabal.

Both push party politics over individual freedom and liberty, and both embrace "leadership" as a greater virtue than the rule of law, our Constitution, or even the idea of liberty itself. While the power struggle between the two parties is very real indeed, contra "We the People," theirs is not an ideological battle, but a fight over who gets to control the multi-trillion dollar federal budget.

In 2007, investigative journalist Russ Baker wrote the following report about Alan Quasha, the Big Money man behind both George W. Bush ® and Hillary Clinton (D) ... and all this time you thought they were mortal enemies.

Hillary's Bush Connection

Political junkies will recall [Alan Quasha] as the controversial figure who bailed out George W. Bush's failing oil company in 1986, folding Bush into his company, Harken Energy, thus setting him on the path to a lucrative and high-profile position as an owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, and the presidency. The persistently unprofitable Harken – many of whose board members, connected to powerful foreign interests and the intelligence community, nevertheless profited enormously ...

Now Quasha is back – on the other side of the aisle.

Operating below the radar, he entered Hillary Clinton's circle even before she declared her candidacy by quietly hiring Clinton confidant and longtime Democratic Party money man Terry McAuliffe at one of his companies. During the interregnum between McAuliffe's chairmanship of the Democratic Party and the time he officially joined Clinton's campaign, Quasha set McAuliffe up with a salary and opened a Washington office for him.

Just a few years earlier, McAuliffe had publicly criticized Bush for his financial dealings with Harken, disparaging the company's Enron-like accounting. Yet in 2005 McAuliffe accepted this cushy perch with Quasha's newly acquired investment firm, Carret Asset Management, and even brought along former Clinton White House business liaison Peter O’Keefe, who had been his senior aide at the Democratic National Committee.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave ...

Another strong link between Quasha and Clinton is Quasha's business partner, Hassan Nemazee, a top Hillary fundraiser who was trotted out to defend her during the Hsu episode – in which the clothing manufacturer was unmasked as a swindler who seemingly funneled illegal contributions through "donors" of modest means.

Ideology does not seem to be the principal issue driving either Quasha or Nemazee. Nemazee backed the likes of archconservative Republican senators Jesse Helms, Sam Brownback and Al D'Amato before moving aggressively into the Democratic camp. Quasha, frequently identified as a Republican fundraiser, gave to both Bush and Al Gore in 2000 and so far in the 2008 race has given to Republicans Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani as well as Democrats Barack Obama and Chris Dodd, in addition to Hillary Clinton. But Quasha's concerted efforts to get into Clinton's inner circle are reminiscent of his relationship with a pre-Governor Bush.

A student at Harvard's business school at the same time as Bush, Quasha was a little-known New York lawyer when he took over the small Abilene-based Harken Oil in 1983, using millions from offshore accounts held in the name of family members. Quasha’s now-deceased father, Manila-based attorney William Quasha, was known for his close friendship with Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his ties to US intelligence; he was also a member of the "Eagles Club" of major GOP contributors.

Hedge fund manager and author, James Altucher, posted the following on his blog just a few weeks ago.

Politics is a Scam – Why I Will Never Vote Again

I had five seconds to make the secretive most powerful man in the world like me so I could potentially make millions. "James," Bill McCluskey said to me, "this is Alan Quasha." Bill was CEO of Brean Murray, one of the mini-banks I considered selling my fund of hedge funds to in 2006. We had a deal on the table and I was desperate at the time to make it work. The table was circular, there were papers on it with numbers, I was bullxxxxting every which way I could about "synergies". Whatever. That was months later. But first I had to meet Alan Quasha, the owner of Brean Murray, at an event they were throwing, and he had to like me. Because…

(Have you heard of Alan Quasha before this post? And there he is with Ivan Boesky's daughter. Go figure.)

Alan Quasha squinted his eyes, shook my hand. He had no idea who I was. I certainly wasn't anything like George W. Bush, the man Quasha had personally saved in 1986. The man Bush owes his sobriety to. In 1986 Bush was CEO of some oil company that was going down in flames. Possibly the worst oil company in Texas history.

Some calls were made and Quasha's Harken Oil bought Bush's company for millions of dollars. Then, of course, a few years later, Bush sold his shares in Quasha's Harkin Oil right before Harkin Oil announced a mega-loss and the stock tanked. Bush used his profits to buy a stake in the Texas Rangers, sold that stake later for 10-15 million dollars and was finally able to follow his father's sage advice ("don't go into politics until you get rich" ***).

Let's spell out what that means: if Alan Quasha called up W on September 12, 2001 in the middle of Bush pouring over maps of the jungles of Afghanistan to see where we would invade (do they have jungles in Afghanistan? Do we really need an "h" in Afghanistan?), Bush would say "hold all calls", close the doors of the Oval Office and say "Hi Daddy Number 2", to Quasha. He owed his life, his livelihood, the Texas Rangers, the Presidency, all to Alan Quasha and now I was shaking Quasha's hand. I had five seconds to make Alan Quasha like me almost as much as he liked Bush so he would buy my company. Why? Alan Quasha was Chairman of Brean Murray.

Fast-forward about ten seconds. Alan Quasha had moved on. Now I was being introduced to Terry Mcauliffe. Terry was the Vice-Chairman of Brean Murray. Terry was known in most circles as "Bill Clinton's best friend". Terry raised the bulk of the money for the two Presidential campaigns that Bill was in (the first, of course, where he crushed Bush, the Elder). I'm guessing Terry also raised the money for all of Hillary's political races. If Chelsea Clinton ever ran for Mayor of New York (now that Weiner is out of the running so you never know) I bet Terry would raise all the money for her race as well.

So there you have it. The biggest mastermind in Republican politics, the behind the scenes mover and shaker across the entire Bush family, was Chairman of the company. And the biggest mover-and-shaker in Democrat politics, was Vice Chairman. The war of values, between Democracy and Republicanism that our founders had fought for, had shed blood for, was over between them, if it ever even existed. Screw "The Federalist Papers"! Let's make some money!

You see why your vote is useless? Not only is it useless, it's scary.

The saga continues ...

Behind Clinton Backer's Arrest: a Bipartisan, International Affair

On August 25th, Hassan Nemazee, a top fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, was arrested and charged with forging loan documents in order to borrow $74 million from Citibank. He could face up to 30 years in prison. Early media accounts cast the event as an embarrassment for Ms. Clinton involving the financial misdoings of one prominent backer. Actually it is much more.

Behind the Nemazee arrest lies a sprawling cautionary tale of presidents, would-be presidents, and the shadow world of wealthy operators who cozy up to them for their own gain. It reaches into the Bush operation as well as that of the Clintons, and is a microcosm of an influence bazaar that has gone global along with the economy.

Hassan Nemazee, who served as a finance director for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, began raising sizable sums for the Democratic National Committee in the mid-nineties. In 1998, in the midst of the Lewinsky affair, Nemazee collected $60,000 for Bill Clinton’s legal defense fund in $10,000 increments from relatives and friends.

The following year, President Clinton nominated the money manager and investor to be ambassador to Argentina. Then an article in Forbes raised questions about his business practices. Among other things, Nemazee, an Iranian-American, had magically turned himself into an "Hispanic" by acquiring Venezuelan citizenship in order to fulfill the minority-ownership requirement of a California public pension fund. The nomination was withdrawn.

That embarrassment did not, however, hamper Nemazee's rise within the Democratic Party.

Big Time Democratic Party fundraiser, Hassan Nemazee, has ties to the Republican Party too.

For legal representation in his current troubles, for example, Nemazee has retained Marc Mukasey, a partner in Rudolph Giuliani's law firm and the son of Michael Mukasey, who served as George W. Bush's last Attorney General. There's more than choice of counsel involved. Before moving into the Democratic camp, Nemazee had backed such Republican senators as Jesse Helms, Sam Brownback and Alfonse D'Amato ... Nemazee's business partner, Alan Quasha ... has also played both sides of the partisan divide. Quasha gave to both Bush and Al Gore in 2000, and in the 2008 race gave to Republicans Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani as well as Democrats Barack Obama and Chris Dodd.

The strikingly trans-partisan and trans-national nature of this high-stakes influence game is best exemplified by the relationship between Quasha's oil company, Harken Energy, and George W. Bush ...

Harken is a curious outfit ... its investors and board members had a dizzying array of connections into global power centers—and ties to the Saudi leadership and the former Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the Shah of Iran, as well as to the Swiss Bank, UBS, which has been charged by the US government with providing cover for Americans who were evading taxes.

Around the time George W. Bush joined its board, Harken received an unusual and sizable cash infusion from the Harvard Management Company, which handles Harvard University’s endowment, the largest in the nation. Robert G. Stone, Jr., a figure with ties to US intelligence and to the Bushes, was head of the Harvard board of overseers that approved financial strategies ( ... Both Quasha and Nemazee, like Bush, have Harvard degrees, and both have sat on prestigious Harvard committees in recent years.)

Nemazee's role as a foreign policy adviser to Hillary Clinton can be better understood through his own Iranian connections. His father was a shipping magnate who was close with the Shah of Iran and served as the Shah's commercial attaché in Washington; Nemazee was a founding member of the Iranian-American Political Action Committee, a lobbying group ...

Got it?

There is absolutely no ideological difference between the Donkeys and Elephants in Washington, DC. They run in the same circles, hang out with the same foreign dictators, and get funding from the same international oligarchs. Whether it's "free markets" or "social justice," they could care less. That is, beyond empty rhetoric to get your vote and an excuse to exercise more and more power and control.

There ain't a dime's worth of difference between Republicans and Democrats. Believing that there is ... has put America in the sad situation she's in now.

Ramparts, March 1967, pp. 29-38

"A Short Account of International Student Politics and the Cold War with Particular Reference to the NSA, CIA, etc....

...Paul F. Hellmuth, a well-known Boston attorney and a member of Hale and Dorr, and David B. Stone, a Boston businessman and philanthropist, are the trustees of the Independence Foundation. Hellmuth alone is the trustee of the J. Frederick Brown Foundation.

Of the two, J. Frederick Brown is less important as a source of NSA funds. It made only $3300 in contributions to NSA, in 1963. It also made contributions to the American Friends of the Middle East, among other organizations with overseas interests. In an article in the May 9, 1966 issue of The Nation, Robert G. Sherrill implied that the American Friends had CIA ties. No official of the organization denied the allegations.

As far as NSA is concerned, the Independence Foundation is the more important of Mr. Hellmuth's two interests. Independence got its tax-exempt status in 1960. Since then, most of its funds have come from other trusts and foundations. In 1962, for example, the Independence Foundation received a total of $247,000, of which only $18,500 came from individuals or corporations; all the rest came from other foundations. Of the total, the four Funds cited in the Patman investigation gave $100,000.

Between 1962 and 1965, NSA received $256,483.33 in grants for its international programs from Independence. Much of that sum went to pay for NSA's International Student Relations Seminars, yearly extravaganzas which served as effective training grounds for future NSA international leaders.

NSA is still coasting on Independence's largesse. The building which houses NSA's present headquarters is occupied under a 15-year rent-free agreement with the Independence Foundation. Originally, NSA purchased the building with a down payment and a yearly mortgage payment to be secured from Independence. But Independence suddenly changed its mind and bought the property back from NSA. Deeds on file with the clerk of the District of Columbia reveal that NSA sold the property on October 20th, 1965, to the First National Bank, but that the bank was acting as a "trustee under an undisclosed trust." The undisclosed party is Paul Hellmuth, who secured the property, and leased it to the Independence Foundation which turned it over to NSA for the 15-year free rent agreement.

Shortly after NSA moved into its new plush Washington offices in the fall of 1965, a reporter from the Washington Post, who was doing a feature article on NSA, asked NSA President Phil Sherburne who was paying the rent on the building. Sherburne refused to divulge this information. This secrecy in protecting the names of NSA's benefactors was not unusual. In fact, NSA has never made a full financial accounting to its own Congresses.

The Independence Foundation has served NSA's overseas operations in other indirect ways. It has provided a number of scholarships for former NSA officers, usually in the neighborhood of $3000 per year. The purpose of these scholarships was to enable former NSA officers to function as overseas representatives where they were free to make contacts with foreign student unions and roam as free operatives for NSA, sending back periodic reports. Ostensibly, the overseas representatives were supposed to be in overseas universities, but this was entirely pro forma.

Independence has not restricted its largesse exclusively to NSA. In the period between 1961 and 1965 it spent $180,000 in financing an interesting operation known as the Independent Research Service (IRS). This was the organization that made life so miserable for the organizers of the communist-leaning world youth festivals in Vienna in 1959, and in Helsinki in 1962. The Independent Research Service actively recruited a delegation of hundreds of young Americans to attend the festivals in order to actively oppose the communists. The travel expenses of all the delegates were fully paid for and the bill was footed as well for a jazz group, an exhibition of famous American painters and a daily newspaper printed in five languages, all of which accompanied the delegates.

Although the official position of the NSA Congress was not to participate in the youth festivals, important NSA officers and ex-officers were very active in the Independent Research Service activities in Vienna and Helsinki. The director of the IRS during the Helsinki Youth Festival was Dennis Shaul, who was elected NSA president shortly thereafter. Shaul has also been the recipient of one of the Independence Foundation's "scholarships" in 1964.

When questioned by a Ramparts reporter about some of the activities and sources of funds for his Independence Foundation, Mr. Hellmuth, a normally outgoing man, became guarded and curt. He refused to divulge the addresses or any other information about the money which had been donated to both of his foundations. However, he was quite voluble about his close friendship with the officers of NSA. ..."

Harvard’s shady deal with Harken smacks of corporate decadence and irresponsibility

By The CRIMSON Staff,

....Harvard’s involvement in Harken Energy Company began just a couple of months after George W. Bush joined Harken’s board of directors. At the time the Harvard Corporation, the University’s seven-member top governing board, included Robert G. Stone Jr. ’45 among its members. Stone retired from the Corporation last spring; he remains a director of Harvard Management Company, Harvard’s investment arm. Stone is a fellow Texas oil executive and a contributor to Bush-family political campaigns. Such close ties between Harvard and Harken offer a possible explanation for Harvard’s involvement with the ailing company, raising the troubling possibility of cronyism driving Harvard’s investments.....

Frank Vanderlip, Philanthropist And Investment Banker, at 86

By WOLFGANG SAXON

Published: April 27, 1993

Frank Arthur Vanderlip Jr., a New York investment banker and philanthropist, died on Friday at the John Douglas French Center for Alzheimer's disease in Los Alamitos, Calif. He was 86 and lived in Somers, N.Y., and on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

The cause was cancer, said Henrik N. Vanderlip, a nephew.

Mr. Vanderlip was born in Scarborough, N.Y. His father was a financier, president of National City Bank of New York, now Citibank, and Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under President William McKinley. He attended the Scarborough School, founded by his parents, and Phillips Exeter Academy, before graduating in economics and architecture from Harvard in 1930.

Mr. Vanderlip became well known as a fund raiser and organizer of charity balls, for causes that included mental health and the fight against cancer. Active in Civic Affairs

He was a past president of the Cancer Care volunteers for the National Cancer Foundation, and director and treasurer of the American Opera Society. Over the years he also served as a member of the executive council of the International Young Men's Christian Association, chairman of the Committee on Mental Health Needs of New York City, and a council member of the National Municipal League.

He and his second wife, Dr. Neva Eileen McGrath, built the Beechwood Theater for the Scarborough School on the former family estate, Beechwood, in Scarborough.

In World War II, he was commissioned into the Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel while serving in Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Europe. His commendations included the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal of the Armed Forces and the French Legion of Honor.

In business he headed family-controlled investment and real-estate concerns, like the Palos Verdes Corporation in southern California. He also held directorships in various corporations.

Mr. Vanderlip's wife died a year ago. He is survived by a brother, John, of Rancho Palos Verdes, and 12 nieces and nephews.

Hit the ctrl and the + keys a couple of times and the print should expand enough to read. Vanderlip, Sr., was at the Jekyll Island meeting in 1910, and as Alan Quasha's father-in-law, Ronan, and probably all U.S. presidents from both parties were, was a Rockefeller front man.

QUILLAN COLLECTION SALE AT SOTHEBY'S TOTALS $17.3 MILLION; AND RAISES ISSUE AS TO WHO EXACTLY OWNED THE PHOTOS Issue 146 7/24/2008

By Stephen Perloff,

Editor of The Photograph Collector Newsletter

...There is one other issue that was on many people's minds, but that Sotheby's--and Quasha--tried to downplay, if not avoid altogether: that is, what exactly was this Quillan Company? When the collection was put together and the original book/catalogue was published, there was no internet. But by the time of the auction interested parties could easily google "Quillan Company" and find that there seemed to be no such entity. Questions arose as to what this "company" actually was. Did it manufacture something, provide a service, or might it just be a consortium of collectors (this latter choice not an unusual enterprise these days)? When I spoke to Quasha on the phone and asked her straightforwardly about the nature of Quillan, she was uncharacteristically defensive, saying that it was a consortium of collectors, that she was just the agent and had no ownership interest, but also that my question was "ridiculous."

Unfortunately, this lack of transparency led to speculation, rumor, and hard feelings. Several people asked me to investigate what the Quillan Company was. Others deciphered the name Quillan as a portmanteau of the names Quasha, Jill, and her brother Alan: QU(asha)(j)ILL(al)AN. More than a few decided that Alan must be the sole or primary owner, or that Quillan was really jointly owned by Jill and her brother.

Certainly Alan Quasha is a problematic figure to many. He is the controversial financier who bailed out George W. Bush's failing oil company in 1986, folding it into his own company, Harken Energy. His reputed ties to U.S. and foreign intelligence communities, his labyrinthine business dealings, and his reported support of both Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney in the recent election primary campaigns have been grist for the political press. There is much more, but you can do your own research on Alan Quasha and Harken Energy. And it did not help that the Quillan Company was registered in the British Virgin Islands.

There were those who found some of the high prices suspect and questioned if some of the phone bidders were legitimate collectors, or bidders with more political intentions. And surprisingly, several people were harshly bitter because Quillan was presented as having the façade of a real company....

BIG DEAL; A New Place for Their Rackets

By WILLIAM NEUMAN

Published: June 12, 2005

....A Duplex for a Billionaire

THE billionaire Randolph D. Lerner, the owner of the Cleveland Browns and chairman of the credit card company MBNA, bought a duplex apartment last month at 720 Park Avenue, at the corner of 70th Street. Mr. Lerner bought the apartment from Alan G. Quasha, the chairman of Harken Energy.

Mr. Lerner, who is known as Randy, is No. 488 on the Forbes list of the world's richest people, with an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion. The apartment was listed with Sotheby's International Realty for $12 million.

Mr. Lerner took over the football team and MBNA after the death of his father, Alfred Lerner, in October 2002. His father brought football back to Cleveland in 1999, three years after the old Browns team decamped to Baltimore. Mr. Lerner also owns a home in Amagansett on Long Island. He has filed papers with the city Department of Buildings to renovate the Park Avenue apartment.

Mr. Quasha was the chairman of Harken Energy in 1986, when the firm acquired a failing oil company owned by George W. Bush and took him on as a director and consultant. Mr. Bush sold a large block of his shares in Harken in 1990, realizing a substantial profit.

But the sale came just two months before the company reported poor financial data that made the stock price tumble, and the Securities and Exchange Commission opened an investigation into whether Mr. Bush had acted on inside information. Ultimately, the agency closed its investigation without taking any action, although the fact that his father, George H.W. Bush, was president at the time raised questions about how the case was handled.

George W. Bush's role at Harken came under scrutiny again after he became president, because of some questionable accounting maneuvers the company had carried out in the 1989 sale of a chain of Hawaiian gas stations to a group of investors, including Mr. Quasha, which had the effect of inflating the company's revenues. In that case, the S.E.C. ordered Harken to restate its earnings and book a much larger loss for the year. ...

Summing this mess up, I'll end where I began....it was Robert G. Stone, Jr., Harvard fund investment committee official, a man who claimed not to be well acquainted with the Bushes, who malinvested a chunk of Harvard money into Alan Quasha's Harken Energy. Stone, Jr. founded Stonetex in 1950 and Thomas J. Devine was a director, and Stone, Jr. was married to Marion Rockefeller and his daughter was married to William HG Fitzgerald's son, Desmond.

John L. Loeb, associated with both Louis D'Almeida and the Bronfman family, merges Loeb, Rhoades with Hornblower, Weeks.

Loeb, Rhoades senior partner, W. Palmer Dixon, a son and a brother of Loeb senior partners, is a director of the CV Starr insurance holding on the eve of Maurice Greenberg's ascension as Chairman of the new AIG entity, and in 1955, CIA agent Albert B. Carter, Jr. invites Thomas J. Devine to be an usher in his wedding, and Palmer Dixon's son is Carter, Jr.'s best man.

William B. Macomber, Jr., OSS France and Burma, and later in CIA, is best man in the weddings of Nancy Bush and later, Thomas J. Devine. Macomber asks Otto Otepke to alert the FBI to defector Oswald in 1960. Macomber, Jr's brother, John, is an investor in the Bush oil company "bought" by Quasha of Harken, and John Macomber appoints Thomas J. Devine as a V.P. at Celanese Corp. John Macomber is a long serving executive in the Atlantic Council with William HG Fitzgerald, the father of Robert G. Stone, Jr.'s son-in-law, the close friend of Ernest Byfield, Jr., and Fitzgerald was the senior member of Knights of Malta in the U.S.

Bush's close friend, Edward G. Hooker, was DeMohrenschildt's step-nephew and business partner who introduced DeMohrenschildt to Wynn Sharples. Thomas J. Devine met with DeMohrenschildt in a clandestine, CIA assignment in spring, 1963. John Macomber was the mentor of Hooker's daughter's second husband, Michael Ainslie. Ainslie's first wife's sister-in-law, Dame Marjorie M. Scardino, is Chairwoman of Pearson, PLC in London, and an Atlantic Council member. Ainslie's wife was married to Ames Braga. Ames's father, B. Rionda Braga, was first cousin and business partner of Placido Ervesun, married to Ernest Byfield's sister-in-law, Nina Osterman. Byfield may have met Jack Ruby, and Irv Kupcinet, practically a resident of Byfield's Pump Room restaurant, co-wroter a newspaper column with Ruby's lifelong friend, Jimmy Colitz. Byfield and his father employed Patrick Hoy for 15 years until Henry Crown hired Hoy. Sidney Korshak and Gus Alex advised Hoy about what needed to be done, and Hoy did it. Henry Crown's lawyer, Albert Jenner investigated the background of Lee Harvey Oswald and conducted the official questioning of many WC witnesses. including DeMohrenschildt.

In 1953, Jenner represented Frank Darling during congressional committee questioning of Darling, president of Chicago union local 1031 electrical workers, and first Dorfman insurance agency customer.
