Henry Luce and British Intelligence

Recommended Posts

It is well-known that Henry Luce, as a key figure in Operation Mockingbird, played an important role in the cover-up in the assassination of JFK. What has been kept from the public domain until the release of recently published documents, that Luce was working for British intelligence as early as July 1940.

According to The Secret History of British Intelligence in the Americas, 1940-45, a secret report written by leading operatives of the British Security Coordination (Roald Dahl, H. Montgomery Hyde, Giles Playfair, Gilbert Highet and Tom Hill), William Stephenson and BSC played an important role in the Council for Democracy, a group established by Luce, Clare Boothe Luce, C. D. Jackson, Freda Kirchwey, Raymond Gram Swing, Robert Sherwood, John Gunther, Leonard Lyons, Ernest Angell and Carl Joachim Friedrich in July 1940. According to Kai Bird the organization "became an effective and highly visible counterweight to the isolation rhetoric" to America First Committee led by Charles Lindbergh and Robert E. Wood: "With financial support from Douglas and Luce, Jackson, a consummate propagandist, soon had a media operation going which was placing anti-Hitler editorials and articles in eleven hundred newspapers a week around the country."

The BSC report claimed: "William Stephenson decided to take action on his own initiative. He instructed the recently created SOE Division to declare a covert war against the mass of American groups which were organized throughout the country to spread isolationism and anti-British feeling. In the BSC office plans were drawn up and agents were instructed to put them into effect. It was agreed to seek out all existing pro-British interventionist organizations, to subsidize them where necessary and to assist them in every way possible. It was counter-propaganda in the strictest sense of the word. After many rapid conferences the agents went out into the field and began their work. Soon they were taking part in the activities of a great number of interventionist organizations, and were giving to many of them which had begun to flag and to lose interest in their purpose, new vitality and a new lease of life. The following is a list of some of the larger ones... The League of Human Rights, Freedom and Democracy... The American Labor Committee to Aid British Labor... The Ring of Freedom, an association led by the publicist Dorothy Thompson, the Council for Democracy; the American Defenders of Freedom, and other such societies were formed and supported to hold anti-isolationist meetings which branded all isolationists as Nazi-lovers."

Jennet Conant, the author of The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington (2008) argues that Ernest Cuneo was "empowered to feed select British intelligence items about Nazi sympathizers and subversives" to friendly journalists such as Walter Winchell, Drew Pearson, Walter Lippman, Dorothy Thompson, Raymond Gram Swing, Edward Murrow, Vincent Sheean, Eric Sevareid, Edmond Taylor, Rex Stout, Edgar Ansel Mowrer and Whitelaw Reid, who "were stealth operatives in their campaign against Britain's enemies in America". Cuneo also worked closely with editors and publishers who were supporters of American intervention into the Second World War. This included Henry Luce (Life and Time), Arthur Hays Sulzberger (New York Times), Helen Rogers Reid (New York Herald Tribune), Paul C. Patterson (Baltimore Sun), Marshall Field III (Chicago Sun) and Ralph Ingersoll (Picture Magazine).

These groups came under the control of William Donovan, the head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), after the United States entered the war. Donovan had worked for British Security Coordination under Stephenson (they had been friends during the First World War). The OSS of course turned into the CIA in 1947. Therefore, the origins of Operation Mockingbird, dates back to the OSS and the Second World War. This explains why other OSS officers such as Phil Graham (Washington Post), Jack Anderson and Frank Wisner, played such an important role in Operation Mockingbird.

The director of the Radio Research Project was Paul Lazersfeld, with a Ph.D. inindustrial psychology, who married Herta Herzog, the first director of research for the CIA's Voice of America, and eventually became Chairman of the Board of the RAND Corporation, and also head of Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). The founder and chief executive officer of CBS was career intelligence operative William Paley, also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

At the behest of his friend Allen Dulles, Paley hired CIA agents to work undercover at CBS, as part of operation Mockingbird. Mockingbird was created in 1948 as part of Office of Policy Coordination (OPC), by its director Frank Wisner, as an effort to recruit American news organizations and journalists to become spies and disseminators of propaganda. Wisner was told by the CIA to create an organization that would concentrate on:

Propaganda, economic warfare; preventive direct action, including sabotage,

anti-sabotage, demolition and evacuation measures; subversion against

hostile states, including assistance to underground resistance groups, and

support of indigenous anti-Communist elements in threatened countries of

the free world.

CIA Director Dulles had staffed the CIA almost exclusively with Ivy League graduates, especially from Yale with figures like George Herbert Walker Bush from Yale's Skull and Bones Society. Prescott Bush was introduced to Paley by Averell Harriman, who in 1929 had represented CBS in a merger with Paramount Studios. In 1932, Bush took an active role in arranging the financing for Paley to purchase the company, and joined the board of directors, a position which he retained for several years. (20 years Board and Trustee,Gaal)

Thus, through Rockefeller money, Henry Luce, a member of Skull and Bones, was financed to set up a number of national magazines, among them Life, Time, Fortune, and later House and Home and Sports Illustrated. The Rockefellers also directly or indirectly financed the Coles Brothers' Look magazine, and a chain of newspapers. They financed Sam Newhouse, who controlled Random House and the Newhouse magazines, which included The New Yorker, Parade, and a Conde Nast list of nine U.S. magazines, among them Glamour and Vogue. Eugene Meyer, one of the founders of CFR, and first president of the World Bank, bought the Washington Post, Newsweek, the Weekly magazine, and other publications. Lehmans, Goldman-Sachs, Kuhn- Loebs, and the Warburgs, controlled of the film industry, Hollywood, radio, and television.

The CIA had infiltrated the nation's businesses, media, and universities with tens of thousands of on-call operatives to act as spies and stimulate the anticommunist hysteria of the Cold War. Ultimately, the CIA's media assets would eventually include ABC, NBC, CBS, Time, Newsweek, Associated Press, United Press International (UPI), Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps-Howard, Copley News Service, etc. and 400 journalists, who have secretly carried out assignments according to documents on file at CIA headquarters, from intelligence-gathering,

to serving as go-betweens. These journalists sometimes wrote articles that were commissioned by Wisner himself, and the CIA also provided them with

classified information to help them with their work.

Paley said that television created the capability to "out-Goebbels, Goebbels." To Adorno and his "fellow travelers", "Television is a medium of undreamed of psychological control." Adorno declared, "Television aims at the synthesis of radio and film, and is held up only because the interested parties have not yet reached agreement, but its consequences will be quite enormous and promise to intensify the impoverishment of aesthetic matter so drastically..."

Adorno states that all television programming contains, first, an overt message, referring to the plot, characters, scene, etc. It is in this overt content that successful formula are employed to guarantee viewership. But within this overt content, according to Adorno, there lies a "hidden message" that is less obvious, and which represents a particular moral theme for purposes of indoctrination.

Luce, Henry Robinson

1898-1967

His mother was Elizabeth Root, from a family that had earlier intermarried with the Spencers and Pomeroys. Born in Shantung Province, China, in Presbyterian mission house. Attended Chefoo School, Chefoo [Yantai], China from 1908-1912. Attended St. Alban's School north of London, England 1912-1913. Attended Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, Conn. 1913-1916. Cofounded Time with Briton Hadden (Skull & Bones 1920) in 1923 with the help of J.P. Morgan partners Thomas Lamont and Dwight Morrow. Harvey Firestone, E. Roland Harriman, and various members of the Harkness family were other funders of his early media empire. Married to Lila Holz 1923-1935. Founded Fortune in 1930. Editor-in-chief, Time Publications 1930-1938. First “March of Time” radio program in 1931. First “March of Time” newsreel in 1935. Married Clare Boothe Luce, a Dame of Malta, in 1935. Founded Life in 1936. Editorial director, Time, inc. 1938. Organizer of United China Relief in 1940. Initiated the Commission on Freedom of the Press in 1944. Luce was a strong opponent of Fidel Castro and his revolutionary government in Cuba. This included the funding of Alpha 66 (which was guided by the CIA). In 1962 and 1963 Alpha 66 launched several raids on Cuba which included attacks on port installations and foreign shipping. When Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963, Luce's Life Magazine purchased the Zapruder Film for $150,000. Soon after the assassination they also successfully negotiated with Marina Oswald the exclusive rights to her story. This story never appeared in print, but in an interview she gave to the Ladies Home Journal in September 1988 she argued: "I believe he worked for the American government... He was taught the Russian language when he was in the military. Do you think that is usual, that an ordinary soldier is taught Russian? Also, he got in and out of Russia quite easily, and he got me out quite easily." Luce published individual frames of Zapruder's film but did not allow the film to be screened in its entirety. It was shown to the public in March 1975 which convinced many that the fatal head shot come from the Grassy Knoll (because of Kennedy's violent backward and leftward movement while the bullet is supposed to have come from the back). Writers such as Noel Twyman, David Lifton, Jack White, John Costella and David Mantik have claimed that the Zapruder Film has been tampered with. Retired from Time/Life in 1964.
