A side bar : The Victorian era was an era in transition to the modern world. The ongoing industrial revolution, the rejection of the Baroque style by the Aesthetes (1880 or so, onwards), with members such as Oscar Wilde, proposing a comprehensive restyling based on the practical and the liberating. It set the stage for other movements, like Art Nouveau, and used specific symbols such as the sunflower. Buildings from this period can often be identified by a bas relief of such a symbol. It also, going for the rational (eg no heels or corsets for women) argued against the frippery of the Baroque era. Then came WWI and the displacement and subsequent disappearance of many Aristocratic trappings as the servants went to war, returning to a world with more choice and less ties that bind.
