In 1960s and 1970s England had a succession of extremely gifted forwards that were considered as mavericks and were rarely picked for England. This included Rodney Marsh (9 caps), Peter Osgood (4), Charlie George (1), Alan Hudson (2), Stan Bowles (5) and Frank Worthington (8). However, English managers such as Alf Ramsay and Don Revie did not like this type of player and they won very few caps international caps between them.

On 24th January 1973, injuries forced a reluctant Ramsay to pick Marsh to play in a game against Wales. Before the game Ramsay decided to make sure that Marsh knew what was expected of him. In his pre-match team-talk Ramsay said: “Marsh, if you don’t work hard, I’m going to pull you off at half-time.” Marsh replied: “Blimey, boss! At Manchester City all we get is a cup of tea and an orange!”

Ramsay did not laugh and Marsh never played for England again.

By the end of his career Stan Bowles had done all his money. He commented: "I spent all my money on booze, gambling and women - but at least I didn't waste any of it."
