Last week our Government launched a SWIMMING CHARTER - Dfes & Dcms. The charter has many examples , case studies of schools, recreation and LEA departments working together - "pooling" resources. I believe swimming is important within PE, a life ,survival skill. I would like to know what other colleagues think of the place of Swimming within the teaching of PE?

In Sweden it has become such a great concern to see to it that all children of 5th grade and up can swim that the government has financed extra lessons (at PE time) for all that can't. The goal is that all 5th graders should be able to at least swim 200 meters. I'm not a PE teacher but I think that this question is essential since, as you point out, it's a survival skill. So I'm pleased with the governments action!

We live in age where we wait for the government to implement policies. Would any PE teachers ever undertake to ensure their pupils could swim out of a sense of social responsibility rather than an addition to their pay packet?
