Hi I am about to discuss the implications of incentives to learning, do you think that incentives should be used a s learning tool, I am looking at McGregors theory X and Y. Do you know af any incnetives that work or do you think you either have the motivation or you do not.

Theory X states

People don’t like to work and will avoid it if they can

People must be controlled, directed or threatened to get them to make an effort

Workers want to avoid responsibility but want job security

Theory Y states

Work is as natural as play or rest

People want to be self-directed and will try to accomplish goals in which they believe

Positive incentives will motivate workers

People seek responsibility and are willing to help solve problems

In terms of incentives for children in compulsory education Theory Y looks very appealing biggrin.gif . The positive incentive however must be related to the inculcation of a real love of learning - intrinsic rather than extrinsic rewards. Teachers get only do this with inspired and inspirational teaching. Most teachers in my experience are sadly followers of Theory X
