My name is Alf Wilkinson and I was a history teacher, head of history and ICT Co-ordinator at a large comprehensive school in Bedford for many years. I left to run the Historical Association NOF training scheme. I know it is fashionable to knock NOF training but I think we helped a lot of teachers move on. I now teach part time in Lincolnshire, and am Professional Development Manager for the HA. This last year I have organised a national conference for history teachers on using ICT and been involved in various projects on behalf of the HA. I am interested in the story part of history, and making learning fun! Sometimes we forget that part of our calling.
I have written lots of online materials and am about to launch my own commercial website. I am also involved in writing textbooks. Apart from that, I like a quiet life in the country!

John Kelly
Dec 21 2003, 11:21 AM
My name is John Kelly and this is only my second year teaching. I live and work at Shanghai High International School. This year I'm teaching IB English. My school is one of only two schools in China which is party funded. We are bi-lingual in Chinese and English. Our school is over 150 years old, but the international division is only ten years old. In the past ten years the number of pupils in the international division has risen from 7 in 1993, to 1150 in 2003.
I have found educational forums vital to my job. This forum has some excellent members who have always taken the time to answer my questions in great detail. I hope this forum will become a lively place to discuss current social, political historical and educational issues and challenge some of the anachronistic ideas that I have found in British and International educators.

Hello there,
I'm Chris Turner, currently an MA student at University College London and (hopeful) PhD applicant to Yale University in the United States. I am also the webmaster of
The History Student Online (http://www.historystudent.com), which aims to publish its own online journal every quarter and provide a base for constructive historical discussion.
Notable essays of mine that have appeared in a couple of departmental publications (mostly when I was at the University of Sheffield) include:
Representations of the Maritime Nation 1600 - 1900Creole Nationalism in the 18th Century CaribbeanKorea: The Useful War?A Castle On Sand: American Policy in Vietnam, 1950 - 1965Forthcoming:
Port Royal Sunsets: The Decline of Piracy in the Caribbean, 1680 - 1730As you can see, my interests are fairly diverse. My intention at PhD level is to explore how Early Modern English culture transported itself to the Americas (if it did at all) from 1500 - 1776 and to see how this contributed to a sense of independence from Britain. I am always happy to discuss issues relating to Early Modern English culture, 20th Century American culture and ideas of Nation on my website.
All the best,

Richard Capon
Jan 3 2004, 07:32 PM
I am Richard Capon.
I have taught Science (originally Biology, but later Physical Sciences as well), Social Sciences, Ancient History, Maths and Astronomy for over 30 years; originally in Bedfordshire, Herts and Northants until settling in Essex. I am about to move over the border to Suffolk where I will be ICT co-ordinator at a Middle School. I have taught children from 5 to 19 years, and adults into their 90s.
For the last few years I have combined some Maths teaching with lots of Adult Education and NOF Training in ICT; but also technical support for schools using Target Tracker.
I am also a KS3 Team leader in Science and an Examiner in A level Social Studies.
I tend to get bored easily, so change jobs every 5-8 years, but I reckon that the best sort of ICT co-ordinator can teach or at least appreciate, the whole school curriculum so as to be effective in supporting our colleagues' work.

8886 GCSE Science CourseworkI've been working on this site over the past few years. It grows very slowly; when and if I have the motivation to add something new. I never seem to get round to writing all the interesting bits I've scribbled on bits of scrap paper as all the boring stuff gets in the way. Recently I've updated the site to take account of the last Examiners Report (grade boundaries and stuff) and started a very tedious and dull reference section on
Resistance. Ideally I'd like to write it well enough so that any kid who's teacher is daft enough to set the Resistance of a Wire coursework could use the info to get top marks. Still working out the best way to explain electron drift to a Grade G student. I'm hoping that the Government will abandon Science Coursework soon so that I have a good excuse not to finish it.
I'm a freelance programmer/web designer amongst other things, so if you've got stacks of money to fritter away on an interesting project let me know.
