In case I miss out through dreaded sleep, Happy New Year to all the Forum members - even you Jack.
Yes Happy New Year everybody.
Our cat had to spend most of the night cowering under the bed because of fireworks. It was like the fourth of July out there.

I wonder when fireworks first became part of New Year celebrations here in the UK? One more example of globalisation, no doubt. We used to be content with a glass of sherry, some bits of shortbread, a piece of coal for first-footing and Jimmy Shand and his Band playing in the background...

Happy new year to all.
As a child living in Gt Yarmouth during the 1960's the whole family would pile outside at Midnight, to listen to the ships horns being sounded, it seemed to my young eyes taht the whole neighbourhood was out, wishing each other happy new year, and singing auld lang syne (doubt thats spelt right) Now all we have is the moronic BOOM, BOOM, BOOM Of fireworks.
