If you just want to type special characters such as é ß ö etc then use a utility program such as FrKeys. I always do when typing in French or German. See:
http://www.camsoftpartners.co.uk/frkeys.htmFrKeys offers shortcuts to characters in a wide range of alphabets, providing you have the relevant fonts installed on your computer. See also Section 5 (Typing foreign characters) of Module 1.3 at the ICT4LT site:
http://www.ict4lt.org/en/en_mod1-3.htmBut I think Andy's original message referred to keyboard shortcuts as an alternative to using the mouse and pull-down menus, such as:
CTRL+C: Copy
CTRL+X: Cut
CTRL+V: Paste
CTRL+Z: Undo
CTRL+B: Bold
CTRL+U: Underline
CTRL+I: Italic
etc...
