The British-born scientist credited with inventing the world wide web, Tim Berners-Lee, has been awarded the first Millennium Technology Prize (£600,000). It was declared that an important factor in awarding him this prize was his decision not to “strive to commercialise or patent his contributions to the internet technologies he has developed.”
