For Americans, with regret:

Dancing in the dark,
'Til the tune ends,
We're dancing in the dark,
And it soon ends,

We're waltzing in the wonder
of why we're here,
Time hurries by, we're here,
And gone,

Looking for the light,
Of a new love,
To brighten up the night,
I have you, love,

And we can face the music together,
Dancing in the dark

by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz

Jazz singer Jon Hendriks has opined that these lyrics describe a classic near death experience (NDE).

Vietnam Song - Country Joe and the Fish ~ 1974
(I first heard it live at Woodstock - hey, I'm even in the movie...)
Sadly, one could replace Vietnam with Iraq....even though there is no longer a draft per se, there is a 'poverty draft' for many.

Well, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on Wall Street, don't be slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of its trade,
But just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Now you can go out and get those reds
'Cause the only good commie is the one that's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late.
And you can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Message for Freedom

by Sara Thomsen

Rulers of the nations as you fuss and fight
Over who owns the soil than who has the right
To design, build, sell and store and fire
All the bombs and guns to defend your holy empire

There are children, hungry children, sick and dying
There are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers crying
They’re only pawns in your play of power and corruption
Slowly starvin’ your new weapon of mass destruction

And prove to me America that you care
And prove to me America you’re aware
Who’s dying for your freedom in this land
Who pays the cost for the liberties you demand

Is it for freedom or our comfort and convenience
Is it to profit for big business we pledge our allegiance
Are we prisoners in the land of the brave and the bold
Held by indifference or our hearts grown hard and cold

And prove to me America that you care
And prove to me America you’re aware
Who’s dying for your freedom in this land
Who pays the cost for the liberties you demand

From J Cash Hurt topic

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance always have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
And I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But still is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to youse and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mourning for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And yes I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
and to wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
To tell the world that everything's OK,
But maybe I can carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

DIALOGUE

Chicago July 1972 (Chicago 5 album)

Part i

Are you optimistic bout the way things are going?
No, I never ever think of it at all

Don't you ever worry
When you see whats going down?

No, I try to mind my business, that is, no business at all

When its time to function as a feeling human being
Will your bachelor of arts help you get by?

I hope to study further, a few more years or so
I also hope to keep a steady high

Will you try to change things
Use the power that you have, the power of a million new ideas?

What is this power you speak of and this need for things to change?
I always thought that everything was fine

Don't you feel repression just closing in around?
No, the campus here is very, very free

Don't it make you angry the way war is dragging on?
Well, I hope the president knows what he's into, I don't know

Don't you ever see the starvation in the city where you live
All the needless hunger all the needless pain?

I haven't been there lately, the country is so fine
But my neighbors don't seem hungry cause they haven't got the time

Thank you for the talk, you know you really eased my mind
I was troubled by the shapes of things to come

Well, if you had my outlook your feelings would be numb
You'd always think that everything was fine

Part ii

We can make it happen
We can change the world now
We can save the children
We can make it better
We can make it happen
We can save the children
We can make it happen

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE
words and music by Pete Seeger
performed by Pete Seeger and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Girls have picked them every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young girls gone?
Taken husbands every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone for soldiers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Covered with flowers every one
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn?

If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there

For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair

All across the nation such a strange vibration
People in motion
There's a whole generation with a new explanation
People in motion people in motion

For those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there

Rat Race

Ah! Ya too rude
Oh what a rat race
Oh what a rat race
This is the rat race

Some a lawful, some a (some are good)

Oh what a rat race, rat race

Some a gorgan, some (?)
a hooligan, some a (Lumpen extremists, wrong path, eg K,K,K,
guine-gog (?)
In this rat race, yeah!
Rat race
I'm singing
When the cats away
The mice will play
Political voilence fill ya city
Yea-ah!
Don't involve Rasta in your say say
Rasta don't work for no C.I.A. (good)
Rat race, rat race, rat race
When you think is peace and safety
A sudden destruction
Collective security for surety (strategy of tension, permanent war on anything, terror, drugs, heathens. (The state is a body of armed men - Engels))
Yeah!

Don't forget your history (good advice)
Know your destiny
In the abundance of water
The fool is thirsty (think outside the square, there are no problems, only solutions (JL))
Rat race, rat race, rat race

Oh it's a disgrace to see the
Human-race in a rat race, rat race
You got the horse race
You got the dog race
You got the human-race
But this is a rat race, rat race (rampging capitalism)

Sun is Shining

Sun is shining, the weather is sweet
Make you want to move your dancing feet
To the rescue, here I am
Want you to know ya, where I stand

When the morning gathers the rainbow
Want you to know I'm a rainbow too
So, to the rescue here I am

Want you to know just if you can
Where I stand, know, know, know, know, know

We'll lift our heads and give JAH praises
We'll lift our heads and give JAH praises, yeah

So to the rescue, to the rescue, to the rescue
Awake from your sleep and slumber (the 'Internationale' : 'Arise ye workers from your slumbers, servile masses arise, arise... , "I Have a Dream..." - MLK*)
Today could be your lucky number

So much Troube in the World

So much trouble in the world now
So much trouble in the world now
Bless my eyes this morning
JAH sun is on the rise once again
The way earthly things are going
Anything can happen

You see men sailing on their ego trips
Blast off on their spaceships
Million miles from reality

No care for you, no care for me
So much trouble in the world now
So much trouble in the world now

All you've got to do is give a little
Give a little, give a little
One more time ye-a-h! ye-ah!

So you think you have found the solution
But it's just another illusion
So before you check out your tide
Don't leave another cornerstone
standing there behind
We have got to face the day, ooh we come what may
We the street people talking, we
the people struggling

Now they are sitting on a time bomb
Now I now the time has come
What goes up must come down
Goes around comes around (the cycle of violence : if all said NO, that's enough, NO, I won't do that, NO, I will not be meat in your grinder, NO, I will noot feed your greed, NO, you're not the Boss of me : my morality, my ethics, my conscience is.)

So much trouble in the world
So much trouble in the world
So much trouble in the world

There is so much trouble
There is so much trouble in the world
There is so much trouble in the world

Referring to youtube topic post:

Indeed : The Great Joni Mitchell (for those with dial-up, (I find the loading time consuming without broadband) the Lyrics:

"For Free"

I slept last night in a good hotel
I went shopping today for jewels
The wind rushed around in the dirty town
And the children let out from the schools
I was standing on a noisy corner
Waiting for the walking green
Across the street he stood
And he played real good
On his clarinet, for free.
Now me I play for fortune
And those velvet curtain calls
I've got a black limousine
And two gentlemen
Escorting me to the halls
And I play if you have the money
Or if you're a friend to me
But the one man band
By the quick lunch stand
He was playing real good, for free.
Nobody stopped to hear him
Though he played so sweet and high
They knew he had never
Been on their T.V.
So they passed his music by
I meant to go over and ask for a song
Maybe put on a harmony...
I heard his refrain
As the signal changed
He was playing real good, for free.

Another good one:

"Woodstock"

He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me
Im going on down to yasgurs farm
Im going to join in a rock n roll band
Im going to camp out on the land
Im going to try an get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe its the time of man
I dont know who l am
But you know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

By the time we got to woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devils bargain
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

QUOTE (John Simkin @ Mar 27 2006, 08:15 AM) *

The winning days are gone
Because I know just where I'm seeing
Was given eyes I know
I can hear
Cause underneath there's gold
I need to get around to find it
And when I want to go
I can dream
I've been trying
All my time

I'm just seeing it rise
Cause it could be the land that's over me
So I just wanna let it breathe

The winning days are gone
Because I know just where I'm seeing
Was given eyes I know
I can hear

Cause underneath there's gold
I need to get around to find it
And when I want to go
I can dream
I've been trying
All my time

I'm just seeing it rise
Cause it could be the land that's over me
So I just wanna let it breathe for now

Get up and go outside
It can help your mind too
Get up don't hide away

Cause I know where they go
I´ve seen you down when I was flying
I'm sinking like a stone
I can´t breathe
I've been trying...

Winning Days - The Vines
Cigdem Göle

Follow through
Make your dreams come true
Don't give up the fight
You will be all right
Cause there's no one like you
In the universe

Don't be afraid
What your mind conceives
You should make a stand
Stand up for what you believe
And tonight we can truly say
Together we're invincible

And during the struggle
They will pull us down
But please, please let's use this chance to
Turn things around
And tonight we can truly say
Together we're invincible

Do it on your own
Makes no difference to me
What you leave behind
What you choose to be
and whatever they say
Your soul's unbreakable

And during the struggle
They will pull us down
But please, please let's use this chance to
Turn things around
And tonight we can truly say
Together we're invincible
Together we're invincible

All The Sad Young Men

by Tommy Wolf and Fran Landesman

Sing a song of sad young men, glasses full of rye
All the news is bad again, kiss your dreams goodbye

All the sad young men, sitting in the bars
Knowing neon nights, and missing all the stars

All the sad young men, drifting through the town
Drinking up the night, trying not to drown

All the sad young men, singing in the cold
Trying to forget, that they're growing old

All the sad young men, choking on their youth
Trying to be brave, running from the truth

Autumn turns the leaves to gold, slowly dies the heart
Sad young men are growing old, that's the cruellest part

All the sad young men, seek a certain smile
Someone they can hold, for just a little while

Tired little girl, does the best she can
Trying to be gay, for a sad young men

While a grimy moon, watches from above
All the sad young men, who play at making love

Misbegotten moon shine for sad young men
Let your gentle light guide them home again

ELUSIVE BUTTERFLY---Bob Lind

You might wake up some mornin'
To the sound of something moving past your window in the wind
And if you're quick enough to rise
You'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow
Out on the new horizon
You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings
And if the sleep has left your ears
You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

You might have heard my footsteps
Echo softly in the distance through the canyons of your mind
I might have even called your name
As I ran searching after something to believe in
You might have seen me runnin'
Through the long-abandoned ruins of the dreams you left behind
If you remember something there
That glided past you followed close by heavy breathin'

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

[Instrumental Interlude]

Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love.

Reminds me of the PC/JFK forum everytime I hear it. For fans of Orwell

If you tolerate this your children will be next (longest titled UK no 1 without brackets) - Manic Sreet Preachers

The future teaches you to be alone
The present to be afraid and cold
So if I can shoot rabbits
Then I can shoot fascists

Bullets for your brain today
But we'll forget it all again
Monuments put from pen to paper
Turns me into a gutless wonder

And if you tolerate this
Then your children will be next

Gravity keeps my head down
Or is it maybe shame
At being so young and being so vain

Holes in your head today
But I'm a pacifist
I've walked La Ramblas
But not with real intent

And if you tolerate this
Then your children will be next

And on the street tonight an old man plays
With newspaper cuttings of his glory days

And if you tolerate this
Then your children will be next

A bit of a pessimistic song from Ash, yet wonderful lyrics.

Behold this night, still and clear
You look here just like an angel sleeping
I wish I could ease your fears
I would catch the diamond tears you're weeping
In your eyes I would hide
By your side I could defy
The forces tearing us apart
But reality, as it seems
Looking back, is that our dream
Was fated from the start

We're star-crossed and can't escape
We're condemned and can only wait
At this time now it's far too late
To save us from our fate

I'll remain in your hold
Body, mind, heart and soul
As long as I breathe
Though consequence takes its toll
All is out of our control
That's how it will be
So close your eyes my young bride
Listen to me one last time
There's something I have to say
When your faith turns to despair
Always will my love be there
And never fade away

We're star-crossed and can't escape
We're condemned and can only wait
At this time now it's far too late
To save us from our fate
You can't save us
You can't save us

At this time now it's far too late
The poison's in our veins
It's true
You know that I'd die for you
You know that I'd die for you
You know that I'd die for you

Forever true
I'll see you through

It's the intensity in the lyrics and the tunes of the guitars that make this song so special.

----
Strange infatuation seems to grace the evening tide.
I'll take it by your side.
Such imagination seems to help the feeling slide.
I'll take it by your side.
Instant correlation sucks and breeds a pack of lies.
I'll take it by your side.
Oversaturation curls the skin and tans the hide.
I'll take it by your side.

I'm unclean, a libertine
And every time you vent your spleen,
I seem to lose the power of speech,
You're slipping slowly from my reach.
You grow me like an evergreen,
You've never seen the lonely me at all

I...
Take the plan, spin it sideways.
I...
Fall.
Without you, I'm nothing.
Without you, I'm nothing.
Without you, I'm nothing.
Take the plan, spin it sideways.
Without you, I'm nothing at all.

Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing
Cigdem Göle
What is life if you're not there?

Why should I even care?
All alone inside my head
Watch the walls close in instead

I'm not supposed to bring you down
You're not supposed to turn me round

What are dreams if not made real?
How am I supposed to feel?
What's your love without some hate?
Should I act or hesitate?

It's a comfort when you
It's a comfort when you
It's a comfort when you smile

Richard Hawley - Tonight The Streets Are Ours
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eBkrs4YpzI

Do you know why you got feelings in your heart
Don't let fear of me then fool you, what you see sets you apart
And there's nothing here to bind you, it's no way for life to start
Do you know that
Tonight the streets are ours

Tonight the streets are ours
These lights in our eyes, they tell no lies

Those people, they got nothing in their souls
And they make our tvs blind us from our visions and our goals
Oh the trigger of time it tricks you so you have no way to grow
But do you know that
Tonight the streets are ours

Tonight the streets are ours
And these lights in our hearts, they tell no lies

And no one else can haunt me the way that you can haunt me
I need to know you want me, I couldn't be without you
And the light that shines around you
No nothing ever matter more than my darling
But tonight the street are ours

Do you know how to kill loneliness at last
Oh there's some much there to heal dear and make tears things of the past
But do you know that
Tonight the street are ours
