I have the pleasure of teaching a number of pupils in the 6th form who also take (have taken) geography. A particularly revealing exchange with one of them recently went as follows.
Pupil: Where are you from Sir?
Me: I'm from the Isle of Man
Pupil: Is that near France?
Me: No it is between Northern Ireland and Cumbria?
Pupil: What's Cumbria?
Me: Have a look at this map (I point to both cumbria and IOM on a map). The Isle of Man is a British crown dependency with its own devolved government, language and currency.
Pupil: Are you one of them asylum seekers then?
Me: Yes but they won't let me back in
Pupil: Is the Isle of Man like the Isle of Sheep? (I think she meant Sheppey)
Me: What did you get in your Geography GCSE?
Pupil: A* Sir I'm really good at Geography.
