John Morrison Birch was a Baptist missionary and U.S. military intelligence officer who was murdered by communists in China shortly after World War II ended,


Birch was born in India and grew up in Macon, Georgia. In 1939 he went to China and worked as a Christian missionary,


Birch was then commissioned as a first lieutenant and became an intelligence analyst for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Promoted to captain, he was awarded the Legion of Merit in 1944 and worked in China throughout the war. Birch was taken prisoner by Chinese communists on 25 August 1945 and subsequently shot and killed. The absence of any official retaliation by the United States was seen as a betrayal by The John Birch Society, who believed that many U.S. officials were "dedicated agents" of a worldwide communist conspiracy.

The Japanese army air force replaced the navy at Gia Lam airport, its mission to bomb the "aid-to-Chiang route" from the Burma border to Kunming. On October 26, fifty-nine Mitsubishi Ki--21s virtually demolished the new CAMCO factory at Loiwing, along with dozens of half-completed planes. But Bill Pawley had a genius for turning adversity into opportunity. He salvaged the machinery and aircraft assemblies and shipped them to Bangalore in India, where he reconstituted himself as Hindustan Aircraft Ltd., building planes for the Royal Air Force. (Indeed, he seems to have sold the RAF some of the Mohawks and Vultees already purchased by China.) Loiwing was rebuilt as a maintenance and repair facility for the CAF.

Since we played polo in the military academy, I know how to play polo. I am not an expert player, but I do know how to play polo, and I am a good rider, and was a good rider. So I tried to get the job in the Arizona Desert School for Boys. And for some reason I could not get this job. There was a job available. I don't remember what the circumstances were. The Panamanian "invasion," such as it was, was a provocation that took Fidel Castro by surprise; he was obliged to publicly dissociate himself from it. HEMMING told this researcher: "The Panama thing went bad in the latter part of February 1959 and everyone was on their guard. This wasn't sanctioned by Fidel, it wasn't sanctioned by anybody. And none of the assholes that went on this invasion were rebels, they hadn't been in the mountains, they all had short hair. The guy that organized the Panama invasion was William Pawley. He suckered John Wayne's people and everybody into the thing. Pawley met him when they were making a movie about the Flying Tigers."


Panamanian authorities found that John Wayne had deposited $525,000 in Arias' bank account between November 19, 1957 and April 5, 1959. John Wayne said he was partners with Arias in a shrimp-exporting business. Six days later the crew landed and were taken into custody by Panamanian authorities. STURGIS associate Alexander Rorke was waiting to rendezvous with the group. STURGIS and William Morgan were arrested in Cuba.
