Censorship in Schools

Recommended Posts

Over the last couple of years I have received a large number of emails from Texas librarians telling me that they intend banning my website from their school. Their main complaint is about what I have written about the history of race relations in America. The last email I received from one of these librarians concerned my web page on the Ku Klux Klan. They objected to the fact that I had explained that the KKK had been created during the aftermath of the American Civil War. The librarian was particularly upset by my naming Nathan Forrest (an outstanding Confederate Army commander) as the first Grand Wizard of the KKK. Forrest is apparently a great hero in Texas.

This situation became clear today when I read in my newspaper that Texas has a policy of banning certain books from schools. This currently includes Alice Walker’s Colour Purple, Richard Wright’s Black Boy (about race relations in the Deep South), George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Johanna Reiss’s The Upstairs Room (about the Nazi holocaust). Apparently, Texas has a system where any book objected to by a parent or teacher is automatically banned. This enables any racist to get books like Colour Purple and Black Boy removed from the school library.
