Trump?

From the column: Mr. Trump also recently inflated his election performance, claiming — without evidence — that he “won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.” This, too, is nothing new. Authoritarians often exaggerate their popular support to increase the perception of their legitimacy. But the deeper objective is to weaken the democratic institutions that limit their power. Eroding confidence in voting, elections and representative bodies gives them a freer hand to wield more power.

As a C.I.A. officer, I saw firsthand authoritarians’ use of these tactics around the world. Their profound appetite for absolute power drives their intolerance for any restraint — whether by people, organizations, the law, cultural norms, principles or even the expectation of consistency. For a despot, all of these checks on power must be ignored, undermined or destroyed so that he is all that matters.

I think Obama's hoping Trump goes easy on "legacy" issues like Obamacare, the climate change accords, the Iran nuke deal, the opening to Cuba.

Keep the Trumpster's appetite for spite to a minimum, I reckon Obama's thinking goes.

Those are excellent points. Trump IS childish enough that it would matter to him. I have to start remembering that...

From the column: So, Time magazine, ever in search of buzz, this week named Donald Trump Person of the Year. But they did so with a headline that read, “President of the Divided States of America.”

The demi-fascist of Fifth Avenue wasn’t flattered by that wording.

I've been fascinated by a nice-looking mystery woman, the gal seen almost every night on the news, escorting visiting VIPs to the Trump Tower elevator. She has also been seen escorting visiting VIPs to the front door of Trump's place at Bedminster.

Being the curious or dirty old man that I am, I Googled something like "who is the Trump Tower escort girl," and I found something very interesting. One of Trump's businesses apparently was (still is?) an escort service. Trump Escorts, charging up to $800 an hour.

"America died on November 8, 2016"? If Neal Gabler wants to be that hypobolic, what about November 22, 1963? Did nothing die that day but a president? I think more of America died on 11/22/63 than died on 11/8/16. What happened on 11/8/16 can be easily corrected in four years. Not a damn thing about 11/22/63 has been corrected in 53 years and counting. But Gabler probably couldn't care less about that. Tom Hanks out there in La La Land has already let it be known that Oswald did it.
