The inevitable end result of our last 56 years

The Electoral College was installed as a check against the use of demagoguery and a bullying "mobocracy" to sway the popular vote.  We have lived beyond the time when the EC is an effective barrier against these.  The EC is also saddled with the prospect that a state elector can vote against the party he/she is pledged to support - little heard of these days, but still as much a potential hazard as a saving grace.

David.

Theoretically, I think the Electoral College is a good thing. If you look down through history, you can see what mobs are capable of.

My complaint with the Electoral College is that for the most part, they are chosen by political parties. Why should private "companies", or political parties be allowed to choose people who are voting for the public, or all of us?

What would happen if we made it a law that members of the Electoral College could not be a member of, or belong to, any political party; and that bribery, or attempted bribery of a member of the Electoral College was a felony?

If its a tie it goes to the House.

I think good ole Nancy might have something to say about it.

Jim,

If the Electoral College is tied and the election goes to the House, each state in the House gets one vote.

There are more Republican States in the House of Representatives than Democratic ones, and Trump wins.

The Senate votes for the Vice President, and Pence wins.

Ye gods.

Anyone like Kirk, or me, wishing North Carolina would update it's presidential election tally, will have to wait, likely until November 12! It's complicated. Explained here:

This year, we're closer than we have ever been to the demagoguery and "mobocracy" historians cite as the reasons for creating an electoral college as oversight.  We'll see if the next several days, and behaviors after the election, prove its worth.

Interesting that it's not used in the European or South American/Mesoamerican countries we think of as immediately influenced by our revolution and constitutional government:

[wiki] Other countries with electoral college systems include Burundi, Estonia, India, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Myanmar, Pakistan, Trinidad and Tobago and Vanuatu. The Seanad Éireann (Senate) in Ireland is chosen by an electoral college.

This is getting a bit agonizing.  Last night I finally went to sleep thinking it could be happening again.  Woke at 4:00 with a stomach ache  thinking about social security, that I can't retire, they're going to gut it and that's supposed to be half my income when I do.  Later in the morning dreading turning on the tv or looking on line I was somewhat encouraged when I did.

Tonight I'm optimistic but still wonder about the prez somehow holding on.  I see no reason why early in person and mail in votes already received shouldn't be tabulated by November 3rd, just don't release the results until the polls close.  Some of these state need to change there procedure.  AP's had it at 264 for hours now.  CNN still won't call Arizona.  C'mon, if Texas, California, New York can finish last night...  What's the population of Nevada 100,000?

Every vote should be counted, yes.  I still have hopes for

Crap.  Protesters in Arizona outside where there counting votes in Maricopa county.

And now, as expected, Trump and his flying GOP monkeys are descending on Nevada to disrupt the vote counting process there.  We've seen this bad Republicon movie before.

Armed camps’: Mitch McConnell plans to do to Biden what he did to Obama – but not just with judges, with cabinet nominees

W.,

Quoting from the article you cited, "Sadly, the voters who said in 2016 that they chose Trump because they thought he was “just like them” turned out to be right. Now, by picking him again, those voters are showing that they are just like him: angry, spoiled, racially resentful, aggrieved, and willing to die rather than ever admit that they were wrong."

As I watched the election results rolling in Tuesday night, I was struck by the fact that in state after state after state, the cities were voting for Joe Biden and the countryside was voting for Trump.

I have lived in small towns most of my life, and the one thing people in small towns hate more than anything is change. People in small towns are insular. They're a small group of people surrounded by large areas of either agricultural land or forests. Their lives are consumed by their immediate family and friends. They don't read the papers or watch the news or read books. I actually lived in a town that a history book of that town described it as being "the town that history passed by."

In his campaign slogan, Donald Trump embodied that world view. It was "Make America Great Again."

It wasn't "Make America Great.". it was "Make American Great Again." It expressed a longing to return to a time before all this change came in.

I've been wondering what this foretells for the future. On the one hand, small towns are drying up because jobs are not to be found. On the other hand, more people are moving out of the cites to escape the crime and congestion. These people will be more educated and more adaptable to change.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. It will probably take several generations.

61 K remaining in Georgia, with Trump up by 18k. Biden needs to get 2/3 to eek out a victory and even in that case, It will probably be litigated forever. It could get down to a couple of 1000 votes. In the biggest county, Fulton-Atlanta, Biden is picking up over 70%. Still, It doesn't look good for Biden, but who ever would have thought Biden would win Georgia?

Nevada hasn't moved for over 24 hours, with Biden up 8k. apparently 200k votes left. So there's quite a bit there left.

Fox news has Biden at 264 giving him Arizona. Everyone is crying foul. The mail in ballot was a scheme by the liberals to throw the election their way, under the guise of the pandemic.

On Thursday, as the remaining votes continued to paint a grim picture for the president’s re-election chances, Trump adviser Harlan Hill demanded that Republican groups start “bussing Trump supporters” to major cities in swing states where ballots are being counted.

HARLAN Z. HILL @Harlan

"Republican groups should start bussing Trump supporters to Philly, Phoenix, and Detroit. Make them feel our level of pissed off."

Yeah, they had such good luck with shuttles in Omaha and all.

You go ahead and abandon a bunch of people off in the middle of Detroit or Philadelphia. See how that goes. Although why he would want to drop off a bunch of kissing people in an inner city kind of escapes me.

“Campaign manager Bill Stepien insisted President Donald Trump was “alive and well…”

“Stepien made the pronouncement during a call with reporters as several key states continue counting votes in the presidential election...”

All the mail-in votes are doing Trump in. The main reason being that during the pandemic crisis Trump was just mailing it in.

The election counting center protests are by Trump supporters only.

And, they are organized ala a Roger Stone MO.

These protesters are given the same signs and flags we see at Trump rallies which are printed up and distributed by Trump's campaign people. Many have signs that charge the Democrats with stealing the election. It really is an angry shouting mob.

Someone obviously contacts these people to let them know where to congregate and how to act. No one is telling these protest groups to be calm, peaceful, respectfully quiet.  They are given highly inciting message signs.

Some look like they may have even been bussed in. Armed police have to guard the entrance doors and protect and even escort ballot counting workers to their cars! Can you believe that?

These are just pure fear and intimidation rallies. It's really fascist appearing.

Exactly like Roger Stone bussing in paid fake protesters in Dade County Florida in 2000 ( called the Brooks Brothers event because they were wearing suits ) to act out extremely aggressively, breaking through the entrance doors, banging on windows, scaring the heck out of election workers.

In Detroit, they are also acting aggressively, crowding up to the windows, shouting loudly, intimidating the count workers inside. Police have to block the entrance.

Anyone know of any Democratic voter protests going on at any vote counting centers anywhere?

These Trump people are just that aggressive and threatening. Their highly provocotive, loud honking and bus encircling highway caravans have caused much fear and congestion.

And their cult leader Trump not only refuses to tell them to stand down, he even encourages and emboldens them and their aggressive threatening public behavior by calling them patriots!

Like I mentioned in an earlier post. There is no displaying of Biden/Harris signs in people's yards or bumper stickers on their cars like you would find in all our past presidential elections.

Maybe one sign every mile or so?   I've never seen this before and I have been through 16 presidential elections.

The reason I hear most often about the almost complete absense of presidential political signs is fear. People fear others shooting at their signs and homes or cars.

Says alot about inflamed Trump times in this country imo.

This might provide a little insight as to why Biden's campaign is still very confident/hopeful in Pennsylvania even though he is still down around 113,000.

The mail balloting I believe, is what's left to count.
