My name is David Richardson and I teach English at a university in southern Sweden (Kalmar). I've been involved with distance education since the early 1980s and with IT-based distance education since the early 1990s.

Besides Sweden, I've worked in the UK (as a secondary teacher of English and French), in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Angola. I was also Team Leader and pedagogical advisor on a World Bank project about education for entrepreneurship in Trinidad and Tobago for a couple of years in the early 1990s.

Apart from that, I have two lovely daughters and we have a little cottage just outside Kalmar, where I pretend I know something about carpentry and cutting trees down - I don't fool anyone, though! I'm really looking forward to spending the summer doing practical things, though, instead of the very technology-driven stuff that I seem to spend most of my time doing.

I am German and I have been a teacher for the last 26 years. Germany still has a three tiered school system and I am a teacher at a Grammar school in Braunschweig, which is in Lower Saxony.

The name of my school is Neue Oberschule; the "neu=new" meaning that when the school was founded at the end of the 19th century it offered a new curriculum focussing on modern languages (at that time Spanish) rather than on Latin. I think we still are a school which is open for new ideas and projects.

A couple of years ago we already participated in a Comenius project; French, Swedish and a British school were involved. The main focus was the introduction of the Euro and how young people perceive their European neighbours. Together with some students I researched the consumer habits of the young people in our years 9, 10 and 11.

At the moment my school is once again part of a Comenius project, this time focussing on Mathematics and the abilities of students from different countries at the end of middle school. This project is in its second year.

Normally we have four classes in every year and two of those classes are bilingual classes, which means that the subjects History, Geography, P.E. (from year 7 on) and Politics/Citzenship (from year 9; in two years time from year 8 on) are taught in English.

My subjects are English, History, and Politics/Citizenship.

My name is Milena Todorova. I am from Stara Zagora a city in Central Bulgaria. I have an MA in History. My present work consists of teaching History through the medium of English to high-school students in a foreign language school, which is considered to be a reputable educational institution. I teach mediaeval and global modern history in English that affords a perfect opportunity for studying in particular the history and culture of English-speaking countries, introducing wide range of primary sources in their original language.

On the other hand, I take part in variety of projects aiming at improvement of the quality of secondary education and language learning. I participate in a course designed for teacher-trainers developing materials for content and language integrated learning (CLIL), which is an initiative of the British council in Bulgaria and the Ministry of education.

I consider that a substantial part of my work as an educator is dedicated to implementation of project activities especially related to teaching of European citizenship. Consequently, I started working on SOCRATES/COMENIUS projects in 1999. Since then I have worked on three projects of this kind:

1999/2000 'Promoting And Disclosing Research Into The Secondary School' (partners from Spain, Finland, Italy);

2004/2001’ForumEduca: The European Citizens Of The New Millennium’ (partners from Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Romania);

2006/2003'ECCE: European Citizens Challenging Education' (partners from UK, Sweden, Italy).

Institut der Stadt, Wien; June/July2003; Tokyo/Japan Exchange program for educators organized by The Japan Foundation (non-profit organization for educational exchange etc.

I have a doctorate in Law, granted by the Public University of Navarre (Pamplona, Spain) where I worked as a research assistant specialising in International and European Law from 1992 until I moved to Luxembourg.

There I joined the European NAvigator (ENA) project in 1998 and participated in the establishment of the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (Virtual Resource Centre for Knowledge about Europe, or CVCE) in 2002. As Head of the Research and Content Development Department and Head of the Legal Affairs Department, I am currently a member of the Coordination Committee.

The primary task of the CVCE is to research, create and select relevant multimedia material on topics of general interest and, more specifically, on European integration in its widest sense. The educational knowledge base European NAvigator (ENA) provides students, teachers, researchers and anyone else interested in European issues with information on the history of European integration from 1945 to the present day.

My work consists in, on the one hand, coordinating the content development of ENA, and on the other hand, dealing with the legal issues concerning ENA and, more broadly, the activities of the CVCE. My tasks also involve managing various teams, namely, Documentary Research, Research Cooperation, Translation, Documentation and Legal Affairs.

A pedagogical approach has been important in the development of ENA. Teachers have been involved in content development, in interface and feature evaluation, and in assessing the various methods of using ENA in the classroom. The CVCE’s activities in secondary schools over the last academic year have been particularly fruitful; our Luxembourg civics project, for which my fellow-coordinator Isabelle Voegeli is responsible, is one example of these.

Here are a few words about the place I work: Högskolan i Kalmar in Sweden.

Kalmar is one of the 35 state-run universities and 'högskolor' in Sweden (we don't really have any private ones). A 'högskola' is a university-level institution which can award first degrees in all subjects, but Ph.Ds only in a limited number of them (Natural Sciences in our case) - a bit like an old UK polytechnic.

There are 8 departments here, and I work in the one called 'Humanities and Social Sciences'. We don't have a Teacher Training Department as such. The general teaching theory is handled by the Health Sciences and Psychology Department, whilst subject-specific courses are under the aegis of the department concerned. Citizenship (which I'm choosing to identify with the Swedish subject 'samhällskunskap' - literally 'knowledge of society') falls under our remit.

The system of teacher training was radically reformed in Sweden a couple of years ago. Nowadays about one quarter of all the credits are awarded for 'school-based training' - i.e. formally by the teaching practice mentors out in the schools. This has meant that we have had to liaise a lot more closely with individual teachers in the schools in our region, and we've now built up a close-knit network of contacts in local schools in the area of south-east Sweden.

Thus the associates from my department you might end up working closely with have extensive experience of working in and together with schools, and it'd be relatively easy to include voices from classroom teachers here too.
