According to Pierre Salinger, Kennedy’s press secretary, there was evidence that there might be an assassination attempt in Dallas. In his book, 'With Kennedy', he explains that he received a letter on 19th November from Dallas. It said: “Don’t let the President come down here… I think something terrible will happen to him.”

Salinger said their was general concern about Kennedy’s safety at this time. He quotes recent right-wing attacks on Earl Warren and Adlai Stevenson in Texas. Salinger wrote: “On the several occasions the subject had come up in discussions with him, he always replied: ‘If anyone is crazy enough to want to kill a President of the United States, he can do it. All he must be prepared to do is to give his life for the President’s.”

John and William, there were a host of warnings from Dallas and Texas in general. Some in writing, most verbal. From community leaders, from politicians etc. Manchester probably does the best job of laying out exactly how many warnings with examples - in several cases the folks were worried enough to go to Kennedy's staff.

Remember, the fears of violent demonstration were strong enough for the City Council to pass a special law dealing with that specifically as a last minute precaution for the JFK visit and the Chief of Police felt strongly enough to go on public TV to call for everyone to help the police quell any such demonstrations or protests.

I believe he even got a warning from Adlai Stevenson, After the incident that he went through down in Dallas a couple of weeks before JFK was supposed to be there.
