I find myself regularly wanting to know where these states are so I thought I'd stick a map here for reference. Confederate states are gray and Union states are blue; green are border states and were not formally part of either side.

Oklahoma, which was classified as "Indian Territory" sided with the Confederacy.

Many of the Tribal Chief's at that time were not pureblood native american, and many had their own plantations similar to the south, in which slave labor farmed their fields and cotton.

As punishment for this, after defeat by the Union, the slaves were freed and thereafter assigned as members of the tribe of which they had formerly been slaves.

In this regard, the Oklahoma Indian roles carry a roll for "Freedmen".

There are many black american who are on the various Cherokee, Choctaw, and Chickasaw Indian Tribal Rolls as a result of the Civil War.

Ok, Tom, thank's for that. I'm a bit surprised also that Kansas is, by the people who provided the coloured map, regarded as a union state. Parts of it seem to have been very confederate, and if my memory is correct was a major player in the resurgence of the KKK early last century. JohnD

OK!

Although this forum is certainly not the place for discussion of the events of the Civil War and which states were or were not slave states, the topic parallels items such as understanding the Vietnam Conflict and LHO.

Without an understanding of the past events which molded the final actions, one can not fully understand the final event.

Through the Missouri Compromise of 1819/1820, the balance of power in the United States Congress (Senate) was maintained by equal numbers of Slave States and Free States.

However, due to population density in the North, the free states virtually controlled the House of Representatives in the U.S. Congress.

With the Missouri Compromise came the restrictions that no slavery would be allowed in those territories which lay north of the southern boundary of Missouri (excluding Missouri). This in effect eliminated slavery from future states formed from much of the Louisiana Purchase, which would later include Kansas & Nebraska.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 repealed this restriction.

Kansas was attempting to enter the Union, and fighting between Pro-Slavery supporters and Anti-Slavery supporters began here well before the actual start of the Civil War. This fighting centered around whether Kansas would enter the Union as a Slave State or as a free State.

This outbreak of fighting gave us anti-slavery factions such as John Brown.

Kansas can also give credit for giving us William Clarke Quantrill on the Confederate side.

The outbreak of the Civil War had it's roots firmly implanted in Kansas Territory where Anti-Slavery and Pro-Slavery factions were already fighting and killing each other long before any state seceded from the Union and the formation of the Confederate States of America was proclaimed.

Historians generally agree that the entry of Kansas into the Union was the final act which gave the southern states the cause which they sought to withdraw from the Union.

Entry of Kansas as a free state would upset the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, and thereafter the southern states would be at the power of a Congress which was now controlled by a House of Represenatatives from northern states, and a Senate of Non-slave states.

Thus: Seccession by the state of Mississippi on January 9, 1861.

Followed by:

January 10--------------Florida secedes

January 11--------------Alabama secedes

January 19--------------Georgia secedes

January 21--------------Withdrawal of five Southern Members from the U.S. Senate

January 26--------------Louisiana secedes.

January 29--Kansas admitted to the Union as a free state.*

*Since secession of five Southern states had already taken place, it is highly unlikely that Kansas would not have been allowed entry into the Union had it taken the position of entry as a "Slave State".

An understanding of the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which was merely a "stop gap" action, followed by the the Kansas-Nebraska act which actually began in-house fighting within territories seeking admission to statehood, is the nature, nurture, and environment which ultimately lead to the secession of the Southern States over the issue of admission of slave/free states into the Union.

Thereby disrupting the balance of power in the U.S. Congress.

As with Vietnam & LHO, one can not fully understand the event until such time as the history of the event is fully examined.

LHO was a product of the South.

In fact, LHO was a product of a family and area of the South which many consider to be radical to this date.

Those who were not raised around this environment have little understanding of it's influence, and those who have not been to and experienced New Orlean, LA, have no understanding of what can be created in it's environment.

In June, 1892, Homer Plessy (a free man of color) boarded the train from New Orleans to Covington, LA (home of LHO's Grandfather, William Oswald). Plessy entered the "white only" portion of the train and seated himself.

Plessy was part of an orchestrated act of civil disobedience against the "Separate but Equal" policies of the South.

Thereafter, Plessy was arrested, and the result was:

1896: Plessy vs. Ferguson, Louisiana's famous Supreme Court Case which established the "Separate but Equal" doctrine that prevailed in America until the Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954.

Each year, we continue to have quite a conflict over sale of the Confederate flag along the beach of Biloxi, MS. in front of the Beauvoir Home of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy.

LHO grew up in an area of the US which exercised the most discriminatory practices of any region of the south.

He attended schools such as "Beauregard"

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to who this school was named after?

The William Franz School which he attended was one of the first selected in New Orleans for forced integration.*

Many families withdrew their children from this school as a result of the forced integration. The black students had to be escorted by Federal Marshalls as it almost created riots on the streets of New Orleans.

Erline Roberts reportedly marched in these activities.

LHO attended Warren Easton High School, which is also where persons such as William Gaudet graduated, later to attend Tulane.

And, although the name Robert R. Rainold has arisen concerning the actions of INCA in New Orleans. Those who have researched him have omitted that this former FBI Agent was also a graduate of Warren Easton High School, as well as being a Tulane Graduate, and President of the New Orleans Bar association at one time.

LHO was raised in the New Orleans environment. To have not adapted to the conditions would have made him a complete and total outcast in the society in which raised as well as the members of his own family.

He rode the streetcars of New Orleans, one of which was operated for 30 years by his Grandfather John Claverie, in which Black's were required to move to the back of the streetcar, even to the extent of a grown black man or woman having to surrender their seat to a young white child and thereafter move farther to the back of the streetcar.

This was the environment and family background of LHO.

"What moved some misguided wretch to do this horrible deed may never be known to us, but we do know that such acts are commonly stimulated by forces of hatred and malevolence, such as today are eating their way into the bloodstream of American life. What a price we pay for this fanaticism."
