A few questions for photographers

Recommended Posts

These questions are related to CT research but I can not disclose why I am asking them. The results should be interesting. I will let the survey run a week or so and reveal why I am asking these questions.

1] Which best describes you? Explain

a] professional photographer

b] scientist/researcher etc, who uses photography for their work

c]advanced amateur

d] beginner

2] How long have you been a photographer?

3] Do you use digital or film cameras? If you use both explain when you use which format.

4] When you fly do you put your cameras / film / memory card in your suitcase or do take them as carry on?

5] Briefly describe the equipment you have.

Many of your questions are irrelevant. I have been a photographer

for 50 years. I have too much equipment to bother to name it all.

I learned in 1988 not to put cameras in luggage. In a trip to

England, the customs inspector required me to put a videocamera

in my suitcase instead of carrying it. When the luggage cleared

customs, the camera was missing.

1. Advanced amateur. I got interested in school and took courses there, mainly using B+W 35mm film, as well as learning how to develop the film. Being an aircraft nut, photography seemed a logical extension for me - so much so I even gave serious consideration to joining the Air Force as a photographer. I got further training in photography and analysis techniques with the military, and was the ship's photographer on the ships I served on. I've continued on this 'advanced amateur' stage for some time now, having a small number of my images published in Defence publications or aviation books / magazines.

2. Started at school about 1976. Been snapping away ever since. See above.

3. Previously used 35mm but now have moved to digital for convenience.

4. Always carry-on.

5. Nikon D-1X, Fuji Finepix S5000, Fuji Finepix F601.

1a] I became an advertising agency art director in 1949; by 1954 I was becoming

dissatisfied with the quality/cost/speed of local professional photographers, so I

bought my first Leica and began taking my own photos. At first I mostly produced

35mm slides and slide shows for clients, and it became a great sideline for our

agency, as we were the only agency in town offering that service. In 1960 our

agency built a new building, including a darkroom adjacent to my office. I then

added black/white photography and began doing my own developing and printing,

becoming good enough that I did nearly all the agency photography for reproduction.

I added 3 more Leicas with about 10 lenses, a Nikon with a zoom lens, and a

4x5 Kodak bellows view camera for copy work, plus a variety of other equipment.

I was a part-time professional, since photography took only about 20 percent

of my working time; but in my design work, I always had in mind that I could

control the photography, so often the photography preceded the design layout.

The cost would have been prohibitive using professionals.

2] 50+ years

3] I use both film and digital; about 5 years ago I got a Sony digital and nowadays

find little reason to use film.

4] NEVER put camera equipment in luggage!

5] See above. Too extensive to list.
