Clifton Dobbs Pawley

Son of William D. Pawley & Annie Hahr Dobbs Pawley

Pilot:  WWII, reportedly flew "The Hump".

Died:  Mexico City, Mexico, September 4, 1951

Herbert Clifton Dobbs

Born:  27 August, 1893, Marietta, GA

Brother to:  Annie Hahr Dobbs Pawley

USA Pilot---WWI

Served under command of Fiorella LaGuardia

Moved to Miami, FL after WWI and joined Pan American Airways as Manager of their Latin America division.

In this capacity, he was responsible for establishment of the first airfields in Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

He is credited with having helped begun flight operations to Latin America and the Carribean.

In 1947, moved to National Airlines as Vice President.

In 1950, he joined Eastern Airlines as Vice-President in charge of flight relations and passenger handling for the Latin America Division.

When one of the first Eastern Airlines aircraft was hijacked to Cuba, Eastern sent Dobbs to negotiate with the new Cuban regime for it's release.

He retired from Eastern Airlines in 1967.

His daughter Louise was an invited guest representing him at the dedication of the "Caproni" exhibit at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB.

Lt. Herbert Clifton Dobbs was one of the few American Pilots who served in WWI who flew the Italian made "Caproni" night bomber aircraft, of which only two are known to remain.

Hopefully, this information may serve to indicate how William Douglas Pawley got into the aviation business.

As the "Head" representative of CAMCO, which was in charge of the AVG/Flying Tigers of pre-WWII fame, of which Claire Chennault was the actual flying Commander, Pawley did not just "happen" into the aircraft industry.

He married into it!

And, it had DEEP roots into the carribean and Latin America.  To include Cuba!

Of course, few are aware that William D. Pawley/aka CAMCO was also responsible for having established the Hindustan Aircraft Ltd company of Bangalore, India as well as having managed the AVG of Claire Chennault.

P.S.  Wasn't there some association between David Ferrie and Eastern Airlines???

1919-----William Douglas Pawley marries Annie Hahr Dobbs

1924-----WWI Pilot, Herbert Clifton Dobbs, brother to Annie Hahr Dobbs Pawley, moves to Miami, Fl.

1925-----William Douglas Pawley & Annie Hahr Dobbs Pawley move to Miami, Fl.

thereafter to move to Havana, Cuba

1928-----William Douglas Pawley & Annie Hahr Dobbs Pawley return to Miami, FL.

1929-----Herbert Clifton Dobbs becomes Division Manager of Pan American Airways for the "Latin Division" which includes Cuba; Haiti; Puerto Rico; and the Dominican Republic.

1947-----Herbert Clifton Dobbs leaves Pan American Airlines and becomes Vice-President of National Airlines.

1950-----Herbert Clifton Dobbs leaves National Airlines and joines Eastern Airlines as Vice-President in charge of flight relations and passenger handling.

1967-----Herbert Clifton Dobbs retires from Eastern Airlines.

Eastern Airlines:

Began on April 19, 1926 as Pitcairn Aviation, who was awarded a contract to fly the US Mail between New York City and Atlanta, GA.

In 1929, Clement Keys, the owner of North American Aviation, purchased the airline and in 1930 changed the name to Eastern Airlines.

In 1937, Eastern Airlines acquired the aircraft of the Wedell-Williams Air Service out of Patterson, LA.* This was sold to Eastern by the wife/widow of Louisiana/New Orleans millionaire Harry P. Williams. Margaret Clark Williams.

In 1938, the airline airline was purchased by WWI Flying Ace, Eddie Rickenbacker. Thereafter, Rickenbacker pushed Eastern into a period of growth.

*Patterson, LA is the location from which Robert McKeown was operating when caught by Federal Agents in running guns to Cuba in violation the newly enacted laws.

"Welch was born in 1899 and worked "in the candy manufacturing business all of his adult life," for many years as the vice president for sales and advertising of the James O. Welch Company, founded by his brother. He was on the board of directors of the ultraconservative National Association of Manufacturers for seven years starting in 1950, and chaired NAM's Educational Advisory Committee for two years. It was at NAM, during the height of the Red Menace hysteria, that Welch honed his Americanist philosophy. Welch toured the country chairing meetings on the state of American education, and producing a 32-page brochure "This We Believe About Education," that "concluded that in America parents--and not the State--have the ultimate responsibility for the education of their children." 200,000 copies of the brochure were distributed by NAM.

Welch served as vice chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party finance committee in 1948, and unsuccessfully ran for Lt. Governor in the 1950 Republican primary. Welch supported the ultraconservative Taft over the more moderate Eisenhower by running as a Massachusetts Taft delegate to the 1952 Republican convention. In 1952 Welch wrote May God Forgive Us, a study alleging "subversive influences" by government officials and their allies to shape "public opinion and governmental policies to favor the Communist advance." The book was published by the ultraconservative Henry Regnery Company, which in 1954 also published Welch's The Life of John Birch, which told the story of a fundamentalist missionary in China who became an intelligence agent for General Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers. Birch was killed by Chinese communist soldiers while he was on a mission at the end of WWII. In February of 1956 Welch started publishing a magazine, One Man's Opinion, and in January 1957 he left the candy business to devote his energies to "the anti-Communist cause." "

Pan American Airways

_____________________

Originally founded as a seaplane service out of Key West, Fl. to Havana, Cuba in 1926 (see William D. Pawley), the airline was sold to Juan Terry Trippe, who's primary financial backing came from the Aviation Corporation of America which was largely owned by Cornelius Vanderbuilt Whitney.

Therefore, we have an airline service which was partially founded by William D. Pawley, thereafter being sold to Pan American Airways, of which his brother-in-law, Herbert Clifton Dobbs, was Latin America Division Manager.

Thereafter, William D. Pawley accepted the CAMCO position in China, in conjunction with the Curtiss-Wright Aircract Company and it's ownership of China Airways (China National Aviation Company).

Shortly thereafter, Pan American Airlines acquired the rights to the China National Airlines.

Of course, Pan American Airways owned "China Aviation", lost all of it's assets inside mainland China when the communists gained control of the country.

William D. Pawley--- Formed Inter-Continent Aircraft Corporation.

William D. Pawley---President of Intercontinent Aircraft Corporation, formed in Miami, FL in 1945 with headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza, New York City.

Intercontinent (Inter-Continent) Aircraft Corporation was a subsidary of the Consolidated-Vultee Corporation.

The Consolidated-Vultee Corporation was formed in 1943 with the merger of Consolidated Aircraft Corporation and Vultee Aircraft Corporation.

The "commonly" accepted name for the "Consolidated-Vultee" Corporation was

CONAIR.

Later, the name was changed to General Dynamics.

And of course, serious researchers know exactly where CONAIR/aka General Dynamics comes into play in the JFK assassination scenario.

Tom

P.S. Don't forget that Robert E. L. Oswald, brother to LHO, also worked for CONAIR in the 1950's.

First, I suppose that one should correct the above to read: "CONVAIR", which is of course the correct name.

Secondly:

(page 264) and one will find:

At the tilme the account was opened, Robert L. Oswald indicated employment at "Convair"."

Although an extremely "minor" connection to the subject matter has been made,

(Byrd's, Planes, and Automobile) in relationship to David Harold Byrd, there has been to date, very little presented as regards the "Airplane" connections to LHO.

Perhaps, one should fully investigate this subject as:

1. William D. Pawley was formerly the director of the "Flying Tigers" of China fame prior to WWII, through the company CAMCO.

And, in fact, was closely associated with the Cuban Airline prior to Castro's rise to power.

2. Claire Chennault, legendary hero of the Flying Tigers, was originally from Louisiana, (born in Texas, reared in and claimed Louisiana as his home) and in fact died at Touro Infirmary, New Orleans.

3. David Harold Byrd, owner of the TSDB from which JFK was assassinated, was the first cousin to Senator Byrd of Virginia, as well as being closely associated with the Civil Air Patrol and other aspects of air history.

4. David Ferrie, of course, was in the CAP with LHO, as well as a former airline pilot.

5. LHO was offered a position as a baggage handler at Love Field, just prior to JFK having visited Dallas.

6. Jack Ruby's notebook contained the name of an individual who worked for an airline company at Love Field.

7. Just prior to his release from the Marine Corps, an airline stewardess, who's home was in fact Louisiana, visited LHO at El Toro, CA; dated LHO, and spoke russian with him. (Rosaleen Quinn)

8. Old "vintage" WWII aircraft were utilized in the coup in Guatemala as well as the Bay of Pigs (whatever it was).

9. George DeMohrenschildt, while in New Orleans, had direct contact with Mrs. Margaret Clark Williams, wife of early aviation pioneer Harry P. Williams, for whom the Harry P. Williams airport at Patterson, LA is named after.

10. LHO of course had a rifle carrying strap which came from an old Army Air Corps/Air Force shoulder holster pistol.

Needless to say, there is, as in advertising, "Much, Much, More".

Some relevant, some not!

Where to begin?????

Tom

General Claire Chennault:

Claimed direct family linage to General Robert E. Lee, Commander of Confederate Forces.

Braniff Airways has often been accused of having "CIA" connections. However, in the case of PANAGRA, perhaps it is somewhat like purchasing a house that already has rats in it.

In event no one has observed the "rats" prior, then the new owner will no doubt be held to blame for the infestation.

"Records of the West Side Bank reveal the following information:"

"On December 3, 1956, an account was opened in the name of Mr. or Mrs. Robert L. Oswald, 4910 West Lancaster, Fort Worth, Texas, with a deposit of $376.13.

At the tilme the account was opened, Robert L. Oswald indicated employment at "Convair"."
