Richard Cain

Richard Cain was released from prison on 20th October 1971. Cain was nearly blind due to a degenerative eye disease. Sam Giancana informed mob bosses that Cain was "allowed to earn a living" in Chicago. Two days after arriving home Cain contacted William F. Roemer and offered his services as an undercover agent for the FBI to "help them cripple the mob". It was agreed to meet every Wednesday at Cain's apartment. After several months the FBI decided that the information he was provided was of low quality and he received his last payment in February 1972.

During 1972, after his parole had expired, he spent a great deal of time traveling between Chicago and Giancana's villa outside Cuernavaca. He was usually taken by car, by his driver and bodyguard, Michael Gilardi. Michael J. Cain has speculated that his brother was involved in the smuggling of drugs, diamonds and emeralds from Mexico.

Cain also wrote a movie treatment about the Bay of Pigs and was attempting to raise money to have it produced as a movie. Cain and Sam Giancana also opened a casino in Beirut. They also planned to build casinos in Tehran and Malta. In December 1972 Cain spent time with Giancana and Phyllis McGuire in Honolulu.

In January 1973 he contacted William Roemer and told him that he had fallen out with Giancana and wanted to make contact with the FBI in Mexico City. The agent reported back to Roemer that Cain "wants to prepare reports of everything he knows about Giancana and his associates" and "that he would be able to furnish sufficient information to get an indictment for Giancana within the year".

In April he was back in Chicago. While he was there Sam DeStefano was murdered. Rumours began to circulate that Cain had killed DeStefano. He returned to Mexico and according to his brother "he seemed to have patched things up with Giancana".

During 1973 Cain had regular meetings with Marshall Caifano. Apparently, he was trying to persuade Caifano to support his plan to take control of gambling on the South Side of Chicago. While in the city he became aware that he was being followed. On 18th December he had a meeting with Thomas A. Foran, the former United States attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and asked him if he knew anything about this. Foran told Cain that he was unaware of any pending arrest. The following day he met with Roemer who wanted information about the death of Fiore Bucieri. As a result of the conversation Cain was paid $150 by Roemer.

Cain had dinner with his daughter Kimberly on the night of 19th December. He told her he had a meeting with Marshall Caifano the following day at Rose's Sandwich Shop on Chicago's West Side. Michael Gilardi dropped Cain off at Rose's at 11:40. Gilardi usually stayed with Cain but this time he said he had a doctor's appointment. They talked over lunch and were joined by two others at one point. Califano asked Cain to get something. Cain left Rose's about 12.30 by cab and returned an hour later. Caifano was gone but in his place was two men wearing ski masks who held four customers, a waitress, and Jelly Cozzo, the owner at gunpoint against a back wall.

Cain was ordered to stand against the wall. One of the men, who was holding a sawed-off shotgun, shot him through the bottom of his chin. The blast tore away the right side of his face. The man then searched Cain and removed a slip of paper before leaving in the waiting car.

Apparently, Sam Giancana was upset when he heard about Cain's death. He told friends he was like a son to him. However, he had been in no position to protect him from the mafia. In his book, The Tangled Web: The Life and Death of Richard Cain (2008), Michael Cain argues that one of the gunman was Butch Petrocelli, who was himself murdered six months later. His mouth and nose was covered with duct tape, to keep him from screaming while his face was melted with a blowtorch. The other gunman is in prison for another offence. It is generally accepted that Califano ordered the hit.

I wonder what, if anything, Cain was doing for Giancana in 1973, the year of his death.

It would also be interesting to learn more about the hit on Cain, such as the 3 or 4 people with whom he dined before he was hit.

Michael J. Cain argues in his book, The Tangled Web: The Life and Death of Richard Cain (2008) that he has investigated the claim that his brother took part in the assassination of JFK. He quotes G. Robert Blakey, the former chief counsel to the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA), as saying: "Michael, I had subpoena powers, I talked to dozens, hundreds of witnesses. Not one of them tried to lay this at your brother's feet."

Cain also interviewed Jim Malcotte, who worked in the sheriff's department. "He (Malcotte) told me that on November 22, 1963, he was in the grand jury room at the Cook County Courthouse testifying that one Eddie Lee Jones had shot him during an undercover drug buy. While Malcotte was testifying, a sheriff's deputy burst into the room and announced that the president had been shot. Malcotte remembered the event clearly because of the gravity of the news and the fact that it was unprecedented to have testimony interrupted in the grand jury room. Malcotte also remembered that his boss, Dick Cain, was waiting in the hallway to testify after him."

I don't think the most serious allegations of Richard Cain's connections to the assassination place him in Dealey Plaza, but rather, some other incidents that he was allegedly involved in, like the discovery of the rifle order at Kline's, and whether Cain knew of Giancana's role in the CIA plots to kill Castro and in getting the West Virginia Sherrifs to support JFK's primary election.

Maybe Michael addresses these issues in his book?

Bill,

In my book I talk extensively about the CIA-Mafia plots against Castro and Richard's role in those plots.

His supposed discovery of the purchase at Kline's was reported in the Chicago press by a gossip columnist, but may have been based on a self-serving boast from Richard, I haven't found any direct evidence to support the claim. I'm not denying it, just can't prove it.

Nor did I find any evidence regarding the West Virginia Sheriffs. It isn't likely, though, that he played a role there. I have a pretty good idea of where he was throughout 1960 and I don't see much in his activities that would support that. Again, it could have happened, I just haven't seen any evidence.

Hope that's helpful,

Michael

Interesting. Kansas City used to be the node for US mail that then got shifted to Chicago. Holmes, in DP, mentions this. (It's also where he studied prior to moving to the terminal annex in '48 as USPO PI.(FBI informant DA T-7, Hop skip and jump from Helms, poss ONI and other intel connections, pal of Fritz (at his invite, stalled Oswalds last interrogation with irrelevancies till Ruby was in place when a knock on the door brought the interview to an end, an hour or so after it wa supposed to end. Brushed off the very first report of gunfire fromthe PO with a phone call, Bell film ends with a lingering shot on the jail floor from which this report likely originated, prior to this an unidentified couple is in the Bell film walking casually away from the assassination site, a 'cop' with an odd long coat, and a woman who averts her face, he covers his by appearing to speak into a mike, then his hat briefly flickers across the film close up, then the end apparently from Holmes office(if one lines up berspectives from there and from the sixth floor. AFA the sixth floor and suspicious characters, Holmes saw 'nutting' through his oculars (along with four or so others with him whose ID's he of course 'cannot remember') . Provided all the PO stuff connected to Oswalds box. 'found' the ad, got the Chicago info, had an unbroken connection to superiorsin Washington, etc etc etc....(who were the members of the Dallas Citizens Council at that time?))

One common trait of both LCN and Richard Cain was ambitious compulsion to over reach. Did the Chicago outfit obtain and defend the TFX contract award, and did they get inside the WC through Earl Warren, Tom Clark, Howard Willens, Albert Jenner, Jr., et al?

I submit the strong suspicion that Richard Cain knew the answers to some of these questions better than anyone outside of the Chicago Outfit's highest echelon. Cain even claimed an association with Life Magazine.

Mob Home Swindle Bared

Pay-Per-View - Chicago Tribune - Mar 12, 1966

....Detectives offer as evidence of Varelli's stature in the mob the fact that he is a next door neighbor of Paul [The Waiter] Ricca, elder statesman of the Chicago Mafia.

...and Jim,

Do you think Richard Cain had everything under control, being that he was closely watching Tony? Do you think it was even an option for the Howard Willens designed and prioritized Warren Commission to find that the Chicago Outfit had any role in either the assassination of the President or in the murder of Oswald? I'm assuming Willens loved his mother and cared about what happened to her.

Do you think J. Edgar would have pointed out that Joseph Willens lived next to Accardo, if the WC was poised to disparage his bureau in their report?

http://www.maryferrell.org/mffweb/archive/viewer/showDoc.do?mode=searchResult&absPageId=301691

...The Director commented in connection with this communication, "I would suggest we take this up with Rankin and see if we can't withdraw and let his attorneys take the statements. We are wasting manpower, time, and money. in future, don't deal with Willens, he is a mere underling."...

So its 1963, The Willenses and the Accardos have been livin' side by side for five years, but now Tony, in his house since 1951, has decided to move to new construction, in the same town. I wonder why! (Not really...)

A NEW HOUSE HAS ACCARDO ALL EXCITED

- Chicago Tribune - Nov 7, 1963

....Richard Cain, chief investi- gator for Sheriff Richard Ogil- vie, reports he is convinced the home will be Accardo's.

It is his detectives who tailed the gangster to the construction site. There are other elements that lead detectives to believe Ac- cardo has his eye on the house. Two of the subcontractors on the new home have strong Ac- cardo ties. One is Frank V. Panteleo, a River Grove cement contrac- tor who has been named by po- lice and the Senate rackets committee as a business part- ner of top hoodlums. The other is Nick Palermo, a Melrose Park plumber whose son married Accardo's young- est daughter in 1961. ...

The problem McAdams and the man at wikipedia who created McAdam's bio article there and "guards" the wikipedia article on LHO, is that there are just too many coincidences they don't permit to see the light of day.

How did thugs, both officers at General Dynamics, Crown and Hoy, obtain and retain the most expensive government contract ever awarded in the history of the world, the TFX fighter jet contract?

WEATHER IS KEY; NEW DATA IN FIO RITO CASE Seek Typewriter, Quiz Hotel Official 2 New Leads Found by FioRito Probers

SANDY SMITH

Feb 25, 1963

Sheriff Richard B. Ogilvie disclosed two new developments last night in his investigation into the eligibility of Michael L. FioRito, 51, an attorney, to be the Democratic candidate for alderman in the

1st ward. 1. A search was pushed for a typewriter which was used in certifying that FioRito was a permanent resident of the Con- rad Hilton hotel, in the ward. 2.

The sheriff di s co vered police records which showed that FioRito won dismissal of drunken driving charges in October against Robert Leo White, 42, of 1484 Winnemac av., assistant manager of the hotel.

Ogilvie said that the records showed White was arrested in north Lake shore drive by Policeman Frank Schneider at 3:50 am on Oct. 4 and re- fused to take a sobriety test. He was charged with drunken driving.

White told sheriff's police last night that the charges against him were dismissed when he appeared in Traffic court Oct. 29.

Ho said that a friend, whom he refused to identify, suggested he retain FioRito as his lawyer.

The 1st ward Democratic organization revealed FioRito as its write-in candidate Thurs- day night.

Previously two other nominees, Ald. Johri D'Arco and State Senator Anthony J. De - Tolve, were forced out of that race, reportedly by the crime syndicate. The interrogation of White by sheriff's police interrupted the search in the hotel for

the type- writer with pica style letters and a worn ribbon. If the type- writer can be found, Ogilvie said,

it might reveal "signifi- cant evidence to challenge Fio- Rito's eligibility to run for office."

The elegibility of FioRito aE a candidate is based on the vot- ing residence he claims to established in the 1st ward hote on Jan. 26. According to the sheritt, the typewriter was used to add the names of FioRito and his wife, Margaret, to the Jan. 28 affi- davit in which a Conrad Hilton executive had listed 57 perma- nent residents of the hotel. The affidavit was questioned in a report to the sheriff by Robert C. Goldblatt, a type- writer identification expert. The affidavit was filed with the Chi- on page 4, col. 41 by FioRito Probers cago board of election commis- sioners on Jan. 28 by Thoma $ J. McNamara, the hotel man- ager. Goldblatt told the sheriff the typewriter with the worn rib- bon was used to list the Fio Ritos on the affidavit as the 58th and 59th permanent resi- dents of the hotel. The names of 57 other residents were writ- ten on the affidavit with an elite style typewriter, Goldblatt said. The sheriff's detectives ob- tained specimen writing from typewriters in hotel offices that were opened yesterday. The specimen, Ogilvie said,, would be compared by experts with the typing of the FioRito names on the questioned affidavit. The sheriff announced that three teams of detectives would continue the search for the typewriter today in the hotel and in the 1st ward democratic headquarters, 100 N. La Salle st., and the City hall offices of the election board. on Saturday,

Ogilvie charged that the election board was "ig- noring possible fraud" in the Conrad Hilton affidavit. It was reported yesterday that the shock waves from the political turmoil in the Ist ward had caused a shakeup in the hierarchy of the crime syndi- cate. The crime syndicate king, Sam [Moe] Giancana, 53, an ex- convict, reportedly dictated the "dumping" of D'Arco and De- Tolve as aldermanic nominees of the Ist ward Democratic organization. FouI' syndicate gambling chiefs in the Ist ward report- edly suffered a loss of under- world power in December when they were unable to persuade Giancana to sanction the candi - dacy of D'Arco. The four are Gus [slim] Alex and Frank [strongy] Ferrara, the overlords of gambling in the ward; Louie Briatta, a former city payroller who is D'Arco's brother-in-law; and Nick [Mousiel Garambrone, a mob enforcer in the Loop.

I wonder what, if anything, Cain was doing for Giancana in 1973, the year of his death.

It would also be interesting to learn more about the hit on Cain, such as the 3 or 4 people with whom he dined before he was hit.

According to Michael Cain, during 1972 and 1973 Cain was involved in the smuggling of drugs, diamonds and emeralds from Mexico to the US for Sam Giancana. The two men also opened a casino in Beirut. They also planned to build casinos in Tehran and Malta. In December 1972 Cain spent time with Giancana and Phyllis McGuire in Honolulu.

The agent reported back to Roemer that Cain "wants to prepare reports of everything he knows about Giancana and his associates" and "that he would be able to furnish sufficient information to get an indictment for Giancana within the year".

Richard Cain's specialty was bugging telephones and doing phoneline taps. Wonder if he could have been working for

However, I am not convinced this row really happened as by April they were back working together. Apparently, Sam Giancana was upset when he heard about Cain's death. He told friends he was like a son to him. However, he had been in no position to protect him from the mafia. Michael Cain argues that one of the gunman was Butch Petrocelli, who was himself murdered six months later. His mouth and nose was covered with duct tape, to keep him from screaming while his face was melted with a blowtorch. The other gunman is believed to be Harry Aleman. He is also believed to be the killer of Sam Giancana. He is currently in prison for other offences.

Richard Cain was a made man in the Giancana outfit who protected Sam Giancana's interests from within the Chicago Police Department. He was a Mafia/CIA phone tapping specialist and he was working for the Mexican government in Mexico City as recently as August, 1963. You know, phone tapping as in LI/ENVOY which was staffed by and monitored by Mexico's corrupt, CIA-sponsered DFS. LI/ENVOY was part of William Harvey's super secret CIA-NSA intercept program, "Division/Staff D," as was Bissell's ZR/RIFLE assassination project.

I'm starting to wonder if it was Cain's (or David Christ's) voice on the Mexico City phone calls instead of Oswald's.

"Richard Cain's specialty was bugging telephones and doing phoneline taps. Wonder if he could have been working for"

..how about: the CIA Mexico station operation against the Cuban and Russian embassies, in 1963?.....

Richard Cain was a made man in the Giancana outfit and he protected Sam Giancana's interests from his high-level job within the Chicago Police Department and later as an investigator in the Sheriff's Department. He was a Mafia/CIA phone-tapping specialist. I read somewhere that he was working for the Mexican government in Mexico City as recently as August, 1963. He was, you know, a phone tapping specialist. The CIA's LI/ENVOY program was a phone tapping project which just happened to be staffed and monitored by Mexico's corrupt, CIA-sponsored DFS. As independently pointed out by John Newman and Bill Simpich, LI/ENVOY was "penetrated" by people impersonating Oswald and Sylvia Duran in phone calls made to the Soviet Embassy in Mexico City.

Not to sound overly pedantic, but LI/ENVOY was part of William Harvey's top secret CIA-NSA intercept program "Division / Staff D," which was also a perfect place to hide Richard Bissell's ZR/RIFLE defector and foreign-leader assassination project.

Now I'm starting to wonder if it was Richard Cain's (or David Christ's) voice on the Mexico City phone calls to the Soviet Embassy, instead of Oswald's.

It's said that Richard Cain could speak Spanish.

I wonder if he or David Christ were capable of speaking "terrible, hardly recognizable" Russian?
