Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and the JFK Assassination

Recommended Posts

It is amazing how many people associated with the overthrow of Fidel Castro, the assassination of JFK, Watergate and Iran-Contra, were former members of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). This includes:

Ray S. Cline, Jack Alston Crichton, Lucien E. Conein, Paul Helliwell, James Angleton, Tracy Barnes, C. D. Jackson, Richard Ober, Frank Wisner, Thomas Karamessines, Richard Helms, Allen Dulles, Jack Anderson, William Colby, Henry Hecksher, Gary Underhill, Ulius L. Amoss, Mitchell WerBell, Gerry Droller (Frank Bender), Winston Scott, William Casey, Philip Graham, Louis Mortimer Bloomfield, John K. Singlaub, E. Howard Hunt, Robert Emmett Johnson, Jake Esterline, Thomas Braden, Donald Ewen Cameron, Edward Lansdale, David Bruce, Richard Bissell, Walt Rostow and Kermit (Kim) Roosevelt.

John,

What is amazing is that it is always the same people,,,,the same small, elite clicque and their errand boys. My theory is that this "cycle", got going in 1914, in the US, anyway....earlier in Europe, when Marcellus Hartley Dodge, heir to both the Phelps and Dodge fortunes, and spouse of William Rockefeller's daughter...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcellus_Hartley_Dodge,_Sr.

...built his arms and cartridge manufacturning "city", a tad too early. Rockefeller's banker, Samuel F. Phelps had to take it over for the financiers, and then blame the war department for not jumping into the war in Europe as quickly as the bankers had.

From there, it was a matter of playing all sides, financially, assembling the wealthiest on Jupiter Island, along with war manufacturing and intelligence interests, and the trying to control the policy and process, from the 1930's on.

The bottomline is that the OSS top three, Donovan, Bruce, and Dulles, all were appointed and run by the Jupiter Island interests, and Lovett was chosen by secretary of war, Patterson to chair the committee that designed the post war intelligence structure, the CIA....along with, ONI:

The way these lives intertwined - through private schools, corporate board rooms and social clubs - and the way the United States became the inheritor of the postwar world provide the material of a fascinating, informative and ultimately disquieting study......

/ Note #b|"Walter S. Carpenter, Jr." had been chairman of the finance

committee of the Du Pont Corporation (1930-40). In 1933, Carpenter oversaw

Du Pont's purchase of Remington Arms from Sam Pryor and the Rockefellers,

and led Du Pont into partnership with the Nazi I.G. Farben company for the

manufacture of explosives. Carpenter became Du Pont's president in 1940.

His cartel with the Nazis was broken up by the U.S. government.

Nevertheless, Carpenter remained Du Pont's president, as the company's

technicians participated massively in the Manhattan Project to produce the

first atomic bomb. He was chairman of Du Pont from 1948 to 1962, retaining

high-level access to U.S. strategic activities.

Walter Carpenter and Prescott Bush were fellow activists in the Mental

Hygiene Society. Originating at Yale University in 1908, the movement had

been organized into the World Federation of Mental Health by Montague

Norman, himself a frequen t mental patient, former Brown Brothers partner

and Bank of England Governor. Norman had appointed as the federation's

chairman, Brigadier John Rawlings Rees, director of the Tavistock Clinic,

chief psychiatrist and psychological warfare expert for the British

intelligence services. Prescott was a director of the society in

Connecticut; Carpenter was a director in Delaware.

as Jupiter Island, Florida. Paul's father, Andrew Mellon, U.S. treasury

secretary 1921-32, had approved the transactions of Harriman, Pryor, and

Bush with the Warburgs and the Nazis. Paul Mellon's son-in-law, "David K.E.

Bruce," worked in Prescott Bush's W.A. Harriman & Co. during the late

1920s; was head of the London branch of U.S. intelligence during World War

II; and was Averell Harriman's Assistant Secretary of Commerce in 1947-48.

Mellon family money and participation would be instrumental in many

domestic U.S. projects of the new Central Intelligence Agency.

the Navy. With the Mellons, Tucker was an owner of South American oil

properties. Mrs. Tucker was the great-aunt of "Nicholas Brady," later

George Bush's Iran-Contra partner and U.S. treasury secretary. Their son

Carll Tucker, Jr. (Skull and Bones, 1947), was among the 15 Bonesmen who

selected George Bush for induction in the class of 1948.

/ Note #b|"C. Douglas Dillon" was the boss of William H. Draper, Jr. in

the Draper-Prescott Bush-Fritz Thyssen Nazi banking scheme of the 1930s and

(Thyssen's German Steel Trust) in 1926. C. Douglas Dillon made "Nicholas

Brady" the chairman of the Dillon Read firm in 1971 and himself continued

as chairman of the Executive Committee. C. Douglas Dillon would be a vital

ally of his neighbor Prescott Bush during the Eisenhower administration....

....From the late 1940s, Jupiter Island has served as a center for the direction of covert action by the U.S. government and, indeed, for the

covert management of the government. Jupiter Island will reappear later on, in our account of George Bush in the Iran-Contra affair.

No Worries?

Monday, Sep. 25, 1950

"When U.S. industry mobilizes for war production, the antitrust laws are among the first casualties. Reason: industrywide production allocations and patent pools, which are taboo in peacetime, are essential for the close integration of industries needed for big-scale war production. Last week came the first sign that antitrust prosecutions would again be eased up—or perhaps shelved completely—as they were during World War II. Lanky, eager Herbert Bergson, 44, the U.S.'s most vigorous trustbuster since the early New Deal days of Thurman Arnold, resigned his job.

In two years as head of the Justice Department's antitrust division, Bergson had filed 135 suits, including those against Aluminum Co. of America, E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. and the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (TIME, Sept. 26 et seq.). He has won 80 of his cases, lost only seven. The rest, including the big ones, are still pending. But lately there have been hints that Bergson would have less & less to do. One hint: When the Government decided to build the hydrogen bomb, it handed the big job to Du Pont.

Washington no longer seemed to be worried that Du Pont, which the trustbusters had said was too big, would have to grow much bigger to build the bomb."

Washington at Work; Turning Loyalty and Service to Bush Into Power as Presidential Counsel

By NEIL A. LEWIS, SPECIAL TO THE NEW YORK TIMES

Published: December 12, 1990

Boyden Gray, White House counsel and personal favorite of President Bush, is a man who inspires people to come up with new and inventive ways to say "odd."...

...In the recent past, White House counsels were secondary figures who were primarily involved in giving legal advice. But at the age of 47, Clayland Boyden Gray has become an influential figure on a variety of issues, largely as a result of his special rapport and length of service with George Bush.

The principal theorist behind the President's veto of the civil rights bill, Mr. Gray is also a fierce proponent of the argument that the President need not do anything more than consult with Congress if he chooses that the United States go to war with Iraq. Backer of Presidential Powers

His stand is emblematic of a larger view of Presidential authority that is at the center of his role in the White House. In fact, if Mr. Gray is to make a mark for something other than his forays into an eclectic range of issues, it is his staunch commitment to protect and, if possible, expand Presidential prerogatives in the constitutional scheme.

Mr. Gray initially agreed to be interviewed for this article but later changed his mind, saying he believed the White House counsel should be a figure inconspicuous to the public....

...But their influence was a product of their intellectual heft and political worldliness while Mr. Gray's importance, several mutual friends agreed, is more a result of Mr. Bush's personal regard for him. Product of the Power Elite It is a relationship, those friends say, born of what Mr. Bush might call "the class thing."

A tall figure whose personality oscillates between brooding and genial, Mr. Gray is as indisputable a product of the nation's traditional power elite as is Mr. Bush. Mr. Gray's father, Gordon Gray, served as Secretary of the Army under President Harry S. Truman and was President Dwight D. Eisenhower's national security adviser. He later became president of the University of North Carolina and was an occasional golfing partner of both Senator Prescott Bush of Connecticut and his son George.

"The Bushes and the Grays seem to know an awful lot of people in common," said one White House official.

The irony of JFK assassination research, is that while the usual suspects are known to a great many people, discovering the operative group that pushed the buttons on November 22, possibly involves not only declassified and still classified documents but history books covering subjects such as the OSS, O.N.I and various other areas.

While the OSS veterans, encompasses a fairly large number of individuals the following material, is certainly one for the database.......

Lucien Conein, 79, Legendary Cold War Spy

By TIM WEINER

Lucien E. Conein, one of the last great cold war spies, whose swashbuckling tales of war and death and sex, almost all of them true, form an enduring legend at the Central Intelligence Agency, died Wednesday of heart failure in Bethesda, Md. He was 79.

He ran agents behind the Iron Curtain in the early 1950's. He was the C.I.A.'s contact with friendly generals in Vietnam as the long war took shape there. He was the man through whom the United States gave the generals tacit approval as they planned the assassination of South Vietnam's President, Ngo Dinh Diem, in November 1963.

He was the chief of covert operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration in the 1970's -- a job he imperiled by publicly declaring his honorary membership in the Corsican Brotherhood, a syndicate said to be skilled in smuggling certain controlled substances.

He was decorated by four nations and recruited by the Watergate burglars (he turned them down, and later boasted, ''If I'd been involved, we would have done it right.'')

Mr. Conein also told fellow spies and more than a few journalists that he had served in the French Foreign Legion, which may or may not have been true, and that he had lost two of his fingers on a dangerous secret mission. In fact, he lost them fixing the engine of a car carrying him and his best friend's wife to an assignation, so the story had a basis in truth.

These stories were often told in a smoky restaurant at a table holding empty wine bottles and a dwindling flask of pear brandy, said Stanley Karnow, the historian and author of ''Vietnam: A History'' (Viking, 1983), who spent 70 hours interviewing Mr. Conein (pronounced co-NEEN) for a proposed biography. The project was abandoned when Mr. Karnow decided that his subject was beginning to resemble Somerset Maugham's fictional spy Ashenden, a man so consumed by espionage that he cannot sort out his cover stories from the story of his life.

''He was out of his time,'' Mr. Karnow said. ''He was the swashbuckling soldier of fortune -- the guy who has ceased to exist except in fiction. A marvelous storyteller. Whether the stories were true or not was beside the point. They were almost always almost entirely true.''

Born in Paris in 1919, Mr. Conein was sent to Kansas City to live with an aunt, a French war bride, in 1924. He raced to enlist in the French Army when World War II erupted in 1939. When France fell in 1940, he made his way to the United States and joined the Army, which assigned him to the Office of Strategic Services, the wartime spy service.

The O.S.S. trained him to parachute behind enemy lines. In 1944, based in Algiers, he was dropped into occupied France to rendezvous with the Resistance. In Algiers, during a different liaison, he conceived his first child with a Frenchwoman who later became the first of his three wives, Mr. Karnow said.

With France liberated, the O.S.S. sent Mr. Conein to southern China to join a French-Vietnamese commando team assigned to attack a Japanese post in northern Vietnam. He formed an attachment to Vietnam, an affair that ended badly for both.

When the C.I.A. was begun in 1947, Mr. Conein was on board. He infiltrated saboteurs into Eastern Europe and trained paramilitary forces in Iran. In 1954, he was sent to Saigon, where he laid down caches of arms -- in coffins, buried in cemeteries -- for anti-Communist uprisings that never came. He also met and married his third wife, Elyette.

He returned to Saigon in 1962, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, as the C.I.A.'s liaison between the American Ambassador, Henry Cabot Lodge, and South Vietnam's top generals. In that role, he delivered a message that the generals read to mean that the United States would not object if they assassinated the President, Mr. Diem.

''Few secret agents are ever given the opportunity to scale the professional summit by arranging the overthrow of a government,'' Neil Sheehan wrote in his book, ''A Bright Shining Lie'' (Random House, 1988). ''Conein was transmitting the power of the United States to influence these generals to do its bidding.''

The war did not go well for Mr. Conein. He was increasingly unhappy as a small covert operation grew into a huge military disaster. He retired from the C.I.A. in 1968 and contemplated a war-surplus trading venture in Vietnam. In 1971, he declined an offer from E. Howard Hunt, another retired C.I.A. officer, to join President Richard M. Nixon's ''plumbers,'' the secret team that bungled the Watergate burglary.

From 1973 until 1984, Mr. Conein ran secret operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Much about these missions remains secret, although Mr. Conein became a public figure of sorts in 1975 by candidly testifying about his role in the Diem killing to a Senate committee investigating the United States role in the assassination of foreign leaders. His own role, he testified, ''was to convey the orders from my Ambassador to the people who were planning the coup, to monitor the people who were planning the coup, to get as much information so that our Government would not be caught with their pants down.''

Mr. Conein, who is survived by his wife, Elyette, six sons, one daughter, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on July 14, Bastille Day.

Thank you, Jack.

The discussion of James Forrestal and Suite 8F, on the second page of this great thread;

http://educationforum.ipbhost.com/index.ph...=2868&st=75

....when coupled with the following information, leads me to believe there are two "special" places of concentrated roots that seem to provide nearly

inexhaustible sources of "relationships research". The two locales are the state of Texas, and Jupiter Island, FL, aka "Hobe Sound", as the description

in the NY Times, Eben Pyne obit does, presumably to mask the place of his actual residence.

I normally cringe at using a piece like the one below in a post, because it is sensationalist and of possible dubious (unverified yet, by me....) sources, but it has

potential, and the lower part of it serves as a "tie in" between the final article descriptions in my last post....references to members of the Gray family,

WORLD MONEY POWER III

Charles Savoie

....Otto Kahn of The Pilgrims---a director of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) from 1921-1934--- was written up in “The Mirrors of Wall Street” (1933 by anonymous) on pages 164-177. Page 165 says---

“No other man I ever met---least of all a many of money---gave me such a satisfying feeling of exuberant kindliness and all-pervading love of humanity as this cosmopolitan banker.”

Considering the purges and massacres that took place in Russia most notably under Stalin, the statement about Otto Kahn appears to be a textbook case of contradiction and hypocrisy. Pages 166-167---

“Otto Kahn’s father left Germany in 1848 as a result of the revolution and came to the United States, to return to the Fatherland ten years later as a representative of an American bank. The son grew up in Germany but was sent to London by the Deutsche Bank and became a British citizen. Later he moved from the Deutsche Bank to Speyer and Company, and he was so enamored of England that he just missed going to Parliament. He led a daughter of the house of Kuhn, Loeb and Company to the altar. He became an American citizen, despite the protests of his English friends.”

In The Pilgrims Society we aren’t speaking only of American and British banks, but also of the big European banks. British nobility is heavily intermarried with European royalty which has figured prominently in ownership of those banks since the beginning. Banking families such as the Rothschilds especially, and the Warburgs, are heavy influences in many European banks. Antony Sutton, the original proponent of the discredited theory that Skull & Bones Society runs the United States, nevertheless wrote two other well researched books, “Wall Street and the Bolshevik Revolution” (reprinted 1993) and “Wall Street and the Rise of Hitler” (reprinted 1993). Glancing at financiers identified in these books we find the usual assortment of Pilgrim Society members, most of them “underground” in their Who’s Who listings (they omitted the fact) but identified elsewhere, in the three rare books mentioned in December, and in the Congressional Record. Gary Allen, in his 1976 book “The Rockefeller File,” has a chapter from pages 99 through 125 entitled, “Building the Big Red Machine,” detailing Rockefeller family support for Russian Communism over the years. It could be that empire was becoming somewhat independent of them, hence the break-up of the old U.S.S.R. into many separate nations, leaving Russia itself as the major entity. He had a similar chapter in “None Dare Call it Conspiracy” (1971, pages 111-126). The Morgan interests also supported the Communist revolutionary cause in Russia, with at least $1 million in funds identified in one instance (Washington Post, February 2, 1918).

The Associated Press, October 20, 1969, announced that International Basic Economy Corporation (IBEC), a Rockefeller brothers holding, acquired as partners in Soviet trade, industrialization and development, the firm of N.M. Rothschild & Sons of London. Possibly the two most important names in The Pilgrim Society took an interest in building Communism. On July 17, 1973, Pilgrim Society member David Rockefeller urged Congress to grant the Soviet Union most favored nation trading status (United Press International.) In Allen’s 1971 book, page 85, take note---

“In one country after another Communism has been imposed on the population from the top down. The most prominent forces for the imposition of that tyranny came from the United States and Great Britain.”

In simple language, The Pilgrims New York and London, the leading organization of super rich, spread Communism to over 12 million square miles of planet earth. The Soviet delegation to the United Nations was originally located in a mansion across from the Pilgrim Society front, the Council on Foreign Relations. That mansion was owned by Pilgrim Society member Percy Rivington Pyne II, grandson of Moses Taylor, who owned over 208,000 railroad shares as of 1864, with an average price of $240 a share---a fortune of some $50 millions! (“Secrets of the Federal Reserve,” page 65, see also “History of the Great American Fortunes.”) Percy Pyne II, born 1882, had interests in National City Bank; Delaware & Hudson Railroad; Empire Trust; Farmers Loan & Trust; Princeton Bank & Trust; Commercial Trust; Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Coal; New Amsterdam Gas; Morris & Essex Railroad; Syracuse & Binghampton Railroad; Lackawanna Steel; United New Jersey Railroad; East River Gas Company; Oswego & Syracuse Railroad and many others and was a Princeton University trustee. As of 1994 another Pyne, Eben Wright Pyne, turned up on The Pilgrims executive committee, and was an executive with National City Bank of New York (forerunner of Citigroup) and was a director of Long Island Lighting; U.S. Life Insurance; City Investing Company; Home Insurance Company; W.R. Grace & Company and others.....

Excellent and mind-boggling information!

Thank you, Jack.

The discussion of James Forrestal and Suite 8F, on the second page of this great thread;

http://educationforum.ipbhost.com/index.ph...=2868&st=75

....when coupled with the following information, leads me to believe there are two "special" places of concentrated roots that seem to provide nearly

inexhaustible sources of "relationships research". The two locales are the state of Texas, and Jupiter Island, FL, aka "Hobe Sound", as the description

in the NY Times, Eben Pyne obit does, presumably to mask the place of his actual residence.

I normally cringe at using a piece like the one below in a post, because it is sensationalist and of possible dubious (unverified yet, by me....) sources, but it has

potential, and the lower part of it serves as a "tie in" between the final article descriptions in my last post....references to members of the Gray family,

to the information concerning who the widow of Eben Pyne is:

The following is for informational purposes only.

There was a Nisei component to the OSS, the following individuals are at the core of that group.

OSS

Roy H. Matsumoto

His name was Matsumoto, but he wore an American uniform in Burma and served with soldiers fighting the empire of his ancestors.

Roy H. Matsumoto was born in the United States into a family that had settled there two generations before. He graduated from Long Beach High School in 1933, worked for seven years in a grocery store and was in Los Angeles when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the US entered World War II.

In the wave of anti-Japanese feeling that swept the US, Matsumoto was rounded up along with more than 120,000 other Americans of Japanese descent, labeled a 4C (“enemy agent”) and detained in an internment camp.

After three months detention, and despite the 4C label, he was recruited to serve in the Japanese-American 442nd Regiment of the US Army. The regiment earned more decorations than any other of its size during World War II.

The 442nd saw most action in Europe, but Matsumoto was assigned to military intelligence as an interpreter with Brig-Gen Frank Merrill’s celebrated Marauder Rangers in Burma.

When Matsumoto joined the force, Merrill’s Marauders had achieved almost legendary fame. Reporting on their courageous attack on Myitkyina in May 1944, New York Times correspondent Tillman Durbin wrote: “No other American force anywhere has marched as far, fought as continuously or has had to display such endurance as General Merrill’s swift-moving, hard-hitting foot soldiers.”

Matsumoto was one of 14 Japanese-Americans assigned to Merrill’s Marauders. “Even though we were military intelligence and not infantry, we took basic training with infantry then took combat jungle training in India,” he recalls.

In January 1944 his unit traveled to Assam in northeast India, and in February it moved to Burma, fighting alongside two divisions of Chinese under General Joseph Stilwell’s command. “Our objective was to capture Myitkyina airstrip. The Japanese were very strong in north Burma, and the Chinese were pushing, so we went in behind.”

The Japanese troops in northern Burma were the 18th Division from Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four big islands. Matsumoto’s family was from Hiroshima on the main island of Honshu. Although he couldn’t speak their dialect very well, he could understand the Kyushu troops—which, he says, “came in handy” when the Marauders tapped the Japanese phone lines between divisional headquarters and soldiers in the field.

With his unit surrounded by Japanese troops at one point in the advance on Myitkyina, Matsumoto employed his knowledge of Japanese to trick them into an ambush. Crawling close to enemy positions, he heard the Japanese troops being told they were to launch an attack the following morning. When the attack came, the US Rangers were ready for them and drove them off. Matsumoto then came up with a ruse to lure the now-reinforced Japanese unit back into an ambush—he shouted, in Japanese, the command to attack. This time the duped Japanese were decimated. Not one Ranger fell.

The Rangers went on to take Myitkyina airfield, a vital step in the final advance on Rangoon. Matsumoto was reassigned in late 1944 to the OSS, forerunner of the CIA, in China’s Yunnan province. He retired from the US Army in May 1963, 21 years after being locked up as a potential enemy agent—and is now the proud owner of a war decoration: the US Legion of Merit medal.

JIMMIE YAMAGUCHI

1917-1982

Jimmie was from Los Angeles and was a highly competent linguist as well as a spectacular orator in the Japanese language. When Pearl Harbor was bombed Jimmie was training with the 42nd (Rainbow) Infantry Division. After the bombing he was transferred to a non-combatant role, so he volunteered for Cook and Baker School and became a cook at the Signal Corps Training Camp. From there he volunteered to join the Military Intelligence Service, and also volunteered for the Marauders. After the Marauders Jimmie served with military intelligence in China, he also entered Japan with General McArthur's GHQ as a Nisei interpreter. After his discharge he worked in Japan on contract to the Dept. of the Army Military Intelligence.

ROBERT Y. HONDA

Robert was from Wahiawa, Oahu, Hawaii, and was a University of Hawaii graduate. Robert took a reduction in grade to accompany the MISLS team in joining the Marauders. After the Marauders Robert joined the Detachment 101 - Office of Strategic Service (OSS), to continue the battle to free Burma of Japanese troops.

What was Willoughby's role in relation to Walker and McCloy? (McArthur?)

Mae::

"President Lyndon Johnson asked John J. McCloy to serve on the Warren Commission. No less than nine presidents had called on the Wall Street lawyer for special assignments, yet he was little known to the public. McCloy said he entered the investigation "thinking there was a conspiracy," but left it convinced that Oswald acted alone. "I never saw a case that was more completely proven," he asserted.

McCloy had long been involved in the murky world of espionage, intrigue and nazis. He spent the decade of the 1930s working out of Paris. Much of his time was spent on a law case stemming from German sabotage in World War I. His investigation took him to Berlin, where he shared a box with Hitler at the 1936 Olympics. He was in contact with Rudolph Hess before the Nazi leader made a mysterious flight to England in 1941.

When the nazis occupied Europe, the banking exchanges between Britain and the U.S. on the one hand and Germany on the other carried on as usual. In Trading With the Enemy, Charles Higham documents the role of Standard Oil~ of New Jersey, owned by the Chase Manhattan Bank, and I.G. Farben's Sterling Products with the Bank for International Settlements. Standard Oil tankers plied the sea lanes with fuel for the nazi war machine. Prior to the war McCloy was legal counsel to Farben, the German chemical monopoly.

As an assistant secretary in the War Department during the war:

*McCloy blocked the executions of nazi war criminals

*Forged a pact with the Vichy Regime of pro-nazi Admiral Darlan.

*Displaced Japanese-Americans in California to internment camps.*

*Refused to recommend the bombing of nazi concentration camps to spare the inmates on grounds "the cost would be out of proportion to any possible benefits."

*Refused Jewish refugees entry to the U.S.

In 1952 McCloy left Germany...(and.)... became president of the Chase Manhattan Bank, director of a dozen blue chip corporations, and legal counsel to the "Seven Sisters" of American oil. During this period he acquired a client, the Nobel oil firm, whose interests in Czarist Russia had been managed by the father of George de Mohrenschildt, Lee and Marina Oswald's "best friend" in Dallas."

*the children of the 'Nisei' formed part of the decoders working for Willoughby.

Willoughby and Manila Falangii

"...Adolph Charles Weidenbach, born in Heidelberg, March 8, 1892. But by the time he became Douglas MacArthur's chief of intelligence for the war in the Pacific, he was Major General Charles A. Willoughby...

...Willoughby preferred his fascism with a Spanish accent. But this was an accident of geography. While serving as a military attache in Ecuador, he had received a decoration from Mussolini's government -- the Order of Saints Maurizio and Lazzaro. After delivering an impassioned paean to Spanish dictator Generalissimo Francisco Franco at a lunch in Madrid, he was toasted by the secretary general of the Falangist Party, "I am happy to know a fellow Falangist and reactionary."

(image)Japan decorates Manila Falangi

MacArthur's pre-war headquarters were in the Philippines, whose commerce was dominated by resident Spaniards. ..(among them)... Andres Soriano, who owned an early-day conglomerate of airlines, mines, breweries... and American distributorships. During the Spanish Civil War Soriano was one of Franco's principal money-bags. When the Rising Sun flag was raised over the Philippines Soriano fled to Washington to become finance minister of the government-in-exile. But there was such a fuss over his fascist reputation that he flew off to Australia to become a colonel on MacArthur’s staff." (fled?)

"South River, New Jersey: VorKommando Moskau’s new home

One of the most brutal groups ever to settle in New Jersey since the English killed the Indians was the VorKommando Moskau, originally formed by the SS as they advanced into Eastern Europe and recruited White Russians fleeing their homeland. "VorKommando Moskau was an elite forward unit of SS intelligence on the Soviet front. Its primary mission was anti-Communist intelligence, but it was also responsible for security screening of the occupied populations in the broad sector of the Eastern Front... VorKommando Moskau did not kill the Jews. [Or the Slavs, who were also slaughtered in large numbers.] It hired the collaborators, who recruited the executioners, who killed the Jews. From 1940 to 1942 this one small unit acted as an employment agency for the architects of the Nazi genocide in Eastern Europe." They primarily hired Eastern Europeans. [20]

During his tenure as Nazi hunter in the Justice Department, John Loftus discovered how the White Russians in the VorKommando Moskau were heavily recruited by the US government to fight the Soviets and how all documentation of their Nazi past was well hidden from prying eyes. "Many of the White Russian Nazis had been resettled en masse in the town of South River, New Jersey." [21] Allen Dulles and Bill Casey, who was later Reagan’s CIA director, resettled most of the Vorkommando Moskau’s elite leadership group in the New York - New Jersey area. [22] In April, 1998 it was discovered that Casey sought for and received a dispensation from the Justice Department so that CIA officers would not have to reveal drug trafficking on the part of their contract workers and this 6 months before large scale trafficking began in support of the Nicaraguan Contras. Casey was an old pro at sanitizing the unmentionable."

Thomas Braden co-wrote with Stewart Alsop a history of the Office of Strategic Services called Sub Rosa: The O.S.S. and American Espionage (1946). Braden, a former member of the OSS joined the CIA in 1950 became head of International Organizations Division (IOD). A unit that worked under the direction of Frank Wisner, director of the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC). The IOD helped established anti-Communist front groups in Western Europe. The IOD was dedicated to infiltrating academic, trade and political associations. The objective was to control potential radicals and to steer them to the right. Braden later claimed that such measures were necessary in the early 1950s because the Soviet Union operated "immensely powerful" front groups in Europe.

Braden oversaw the funding of groups such as the National Student Association, the Congress of Cultural Freedom, Communications Workers of America, the American Newspaper Guild and the National Educational Association. According to Braden, the CIA was putting around $900,000 a year into the Congress of Cultural Freedom. Some of this money was used to publish its journal, Encounter. Braden was therefore a key figure in Operation Mockingbird.

In an article published in 1975 he wrote:

The leaders of the agency were, almost to a man, veterans of OSS, the CIA's wartime predecessor. Take, for example, the men whose faces I now recall, standing there in the director's office.

One had run a spy-and-operations network into German from German-occupied territory. Another had volunteered to parachute into Field Marshall Kesselring's headquarters grounds with terms for his surrender. A third had crash-landed in Norway and, having lost half his men, came up, nevertheless, blowing up bridges.

OSS men who became CIA men were unusual people who had volunteered to carry out unusual orders and to take unusual risks. More over, they were impressed, more than most soldiers can be impressed, with the absolute necessity for secrecy and the certainly penalty that awaited the breach of it.

But they had another quality that set them apart. For some reason that psychologists could perhaps explain, a man who volunteers to go on an extremely dangerous mission, alone or with two or three helpers, is likely to be not only brave and resourceful but also somewhat vain. Relatively few men volunteered to jump into German or Japanese territory during World War II. Those who did volunteer were conscious that they were, in a word, "different."

Once these men had landed behind the lines, the difference took on outward symbols. They were alone, Americans in a country full of French or Greek or Italian or Chinese. Often they were treated with great respect. Sometimes, as mere lieutenants, they commanded thousands of men. At a word from them, American or British planes came over to drop supplies to these men. They earned the love and respect that conquered people felt for the great democracy called America. Inevitably, they began to think of themselves individually and collectively as representing the national honor.

Is it not possible that men who have learned to do everything in secrecy, who are accustomed to strange assignments, and who think of themselves as embodying their country, are peculiarly susceptible to imperial Presidencies such as those of Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon? Have they not in fact trained themselves to behave as a power elite?

And just to make sure everyone is aware of this factoid.......

......So who is John Birch, and why is he practically a saint to the far right?

I once asked a man who claimed to be a member of the John Birch Society who John Birch was, and the man didn't know. All that he knew was that he thought that Earl Warren should have been impeached, and that the country had already gone to the dogs.

So on this, the anniversary of his death, we answer the question -- who was John Birch?

John Morrison Birch was an American military intelligence officer and a Baptist missionary in World War II who was shot by armed supporters of the Communist Party of China, on August 25, 1945. Some politically conservative groups within the United States consider him to be a martyr and the first victim of the Cold War. The John Birch Society, formed thirteen years after his death, is named in honor of him.

Birch had been born in 1918 in a small town in the Himalayas in northern India; both his parents were missionaries. In 1920, when John was two, the family returned to the United States. He graduated from Southern Baptist-affiliated Mercer University in Macon in 1939. In his senior year at the university, he organized a student group to identify cases of heresy by professors, such as the teaching of evolution. While at Mercer, Birch decided to become a missionary, and enrolled in the Bible Baptist Seminary at Fort Worth, Texas. After completing a two-year curriculum in a single year, he sailed for China in 1940. Of course, China and Japan were at war at the time; Japan had invaded China in 1937, and occupied much of the northern and eastern part of the country.

He sailed for Shanghai and, after six months of training, he was assigned to Hangzhou, a coastal city which was at the time still controlled by the Chinese. However, the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 ended that -- the Japanese sent a force to Hangzhou to arrest Birch. The Japanese vented their hate on American missionaries by burning their missions and interning their teachers. Birch, number one on the Japanese most-wanted list, barely escaped capture by fleeing inland. There he was largely cut off from the outside world, but he continued to try to found new Christian missions.

In April 1942, Lieutenant-Colonel Jimmy Doolittle and his crew had crash-landed in China after their raid on Tokyo - they launched from an aircraft carrier, but flew from Tokyo to China because of lack of fuel, planning to land as best they could. For several crews, the mission ended badly. Some were captured by the Japanese, some died. Colonel Doolittle and his crew were more fortunate; after bailing out, they were rescued by sympathetic Chinese and smuggled by river into Zhejiang province (where Birch was trying to establish new missions). Birch was told of the survivors, and went to meet them. He helped them get to safety, and then helped locate and direct other American crews to friendly territory.

Doolittle was impressed by the tall, gaunt young southerner and recommended him to Maj. Gen. Claire Lee Chennault, commander of American Volunteer Forces in China. Chennault was organizing a complement of old China hands who spoke the language, knew the customs, and could live on a diet of bamboo shoots, if necessary, to form a radio-intelligence network to provide his command with up-to-date reports of enemy troop movements. He inducted Birch as a second lieutenant into the China Air Task Force of the U.S. Army on July 4, 1942. This group, in 1943, became the 14th Air Force.

Birch's first mission was to survey the airfields in eastern China and certify the amount of fuel cached on each strip. Later the same year (1943), accompanied by two Chinese radio operators and six coolies with portable radios, he infiltrated Japanese lines to contact guerrillas operating along the Yangtze River, who helped him establish a line of radio stations to relay information on enemy ship movements up and down the river.

Birch was later seconded to the OSS, and he agreed to work for OSS on the condition that he would be allowed to work as he had before, including that he would be allowed to preach whenever possible. He built a formidable intelligence network of sympathetic Chinese informants, supplying Chennault with information on Japanese troop movements and shipping, often performing dangerous incognito field assignments, during which he would brazenly hold Sunday church services for Chinese Christians.

Chennault later said: "John Birch was the pioneer of our field-intelligence net....For three years he worked steadily in the field with only brief respites for medical treatment. He refused all leave or temporary duty in the U.S. with the comment 'I'll leave China when the last Jap is gone.'"

On August 14, 1945, V-J Day signaled the end of hostilities, but China was still in ferment with armed bands of Chinese Communist guerrillas throughout the countryside. On August 25, as Birch was leading a party of Americans, Chinese Nationalists, and Koreans on a mission to reach Allied personnel in a Japanese prison camp, they were stopped by Chinese Communists near Xi'an. Birch was asked to surrender his revolver; he refused and harsh words and insults were exchanged. The Communists disarmed Birch, bound his ankles, and made him kneel for execution. They shot him in the back of the head. A Chinese Nationalist colleague was also shot and wounded but survived. The rest of the party was imprisoned but released a short time later. Birch was posthumously awarded a Distinguished Service Medal.

He was just one of thousands of young Americans who served heroically in the Chinese theater in World War II, and his name would probably have remained in obscurity had not Robert Welch picked him to symbolize one of the most aggressive anti-Communist, ultraconservative organizations of modern times -- the John Birch Society.

But there remains considerable doubt among those who knew him best whether Birch would have lent his name to any extremist group, be it right or left. In particular, those who knew Birch as a committed internationalist have a hard time believing that he would have been interested in the xenophobic message that they have been preaching lately.

It is also interesting that the OSS and Ho Chi Minh were not exactly strangers either.

It would be interesting to have asked Minh and those OSS officers; "would you believe in 20 years there will be 500,000 plus U.S. Ground Combat forces, in the southern portion of the country?"

Ho shouldn't be seen as an 'unexpected' ally. After all he proclaimed his admiration for the american constitution and adopted it and sought alliance with the US. He was rebuffed in the favour of China. Vietnam and China are centuries old enemies. I guess the US took a side. And stuck with it. At the end of the Vietnam war, Nixon normalises relations with China, then China made repeated border attacks on Vietnam and probably (IMO) sponsored Pol Pot and a flank attack from Kampuchea.

As far as the China theatre went, the communist guerillas and conservative forces were treated differently. Perhaps they had a grudge to settle, something along 'crimes against humanity'?

Another thing is the transer of personnell from there to the european theatre. So one can find ex china persons including tigers who went on to join the english airforce.

I found the following highly interesting......

China in My Life By Clarence Martin Wilbur, Anita M. O'Brien

Men of history sometimes make history. The distinguished career of C. Martin Wilbur, who spent twenty-nine years as Professor of Chinese History at Columbia University, illustrates this point. Based on journals, letters, and other records, and richly illustrated with photographs from the author's private collection, China in My Life is the autobiographical account of a scholar-teacher who devoted his career to the study of Chinese history and the promotion of Asian studies in America. Over the course of sixty years, starting with his early years in China in the 1920s and 1930s, Wilbur reflects on and details the growth of an academic discipline in this country as well as vast changes in the Asian historical landscape, including developments in Japan and Taiwan over a thirty-five-year period, conditions in Korea, Hong Kong, India, Burma, and Thailand in the 1950s, and the situation in the People's Republic of China in the 1980s.

Because of uncertainties about our real status under the State Department, I decided to fly to Chungking to consult with the charge de’affaires, Walter Robertson, and establish as good a rapport with him as possible. For I had learned that the embassy personnel were jealous of our existence and of our independence during the past few months while we were, in theory, under the department. We wrote reports and sent them in without their scrutiny; used our own codes and had our own pouches. Some of the Foreign Service Officers considered the situation “intolerable.”

It was not a healthy situation.

There were other problems: the Army, or at least some local colonels, no longer wanted any responsibility for cicvilian tech reps; and the other half of OSS wanted no more responsibility for R&A. I delegated certain major tasks: Lincoln Bloomfield to be in charge of getting all outstanding reports cleaned up and sent before our military men left for home.

Page 78

On New Years Eve, I sent my last cable to William Langer the R&A chief, using our own code, attended the wedding of one of our men a Korean-American lieutenant, and after the reception piled Lincoln Bloomfield and Franklin Schaffner (my right and left hands) onto a truck for the airport, because they were flying home. Bob Chin had already sailed, taking along the material for Kay’s new coat. I urged Kay to see them because they were swell guy’s. Then I picked up our secretary, Ann Goodpasture, to take her on a New Years Eve party being put on by the Kunming OSS contingent to spend away their bar profits. Ann too, was bucking to return to stateside.

Robert.....Of course, whatever the activities of L.M. Bloomfield were in 1963 seems to be information not readily available, since the Bloomfield "collection" is outside of the United States, in Canada and is about as secure from prying eyes as George H.W. Bush's "papers" are, which, it is my understanding that the latter are exempt from the provisions of [the] F.O.I.A.

Both of these collections are about as secure as Fort Knox. And while the above passages are only for informational purposes, it is nonetheless an interesting circle of friends, especially when you consider that both E. Howard Hunt and J. Walton Moore were both, I believe, in the Kunming area of China in the same general time frame as L.M. Bloomfield and Ann Goodpasture, who, for those not aware was described as practically being Win Scott's "right hand" at the Western Hemisphere Station in Mexico City.

3. Through the years some have alleged that Arthur Goldberg may have been either involved with the plot to assassinate JFK or, of helping cover-up vital Kennedy assassination facts, while that is not the point of this post, I do believe that the following information is of importance in understanding historical facts regarding the myriad of relationships between individuals and government institutions....The following passage is taken from the book “Uncloaking The CIA.” Section entitled The AFL-CIA by Winslow Peck......”OSS Colonel Heber Blankenhorn a veteran of Army Intelligence in World War 1”.......”convinced Wild Bill Donovan that the European trade unions would constitute the center of anti-Nazi resistance and that the OSS should make more of a special effort to develop labor contactsof intelligence and resistance operations”........”Donovan chose George Bowden, a former International Workers of the World organizer who combined a successful tax practice with prominent membership in the Lawyer’s Guild. Bowden, in turn, recruited a friend of his from the N.Y. Bar, a young attorney named Arthur Goldberg to become first chief of the OSS labor branch.”

Later in Peck’s essay he writes about the very enigmatic Jay Lovestone, Cord Meyer, Jr., and again Arthur Goldberg, stating “After the merger, [between the AFL-CIO] Goldberg continued to work as General Counsel for the AFL-CIO and, along with Reuther was instrumental in getting labor support for JFK’s election in 1960. As a member of the cabinet, Goldberg was able to continue facilitating the CIA’s interface with labor.”

Uncloaking The CIA pages 239, 250, 258.

Another interesting item is in reference to Colonel L. Robert Castorr, in an article dated from the year 1945, there is the following passage....

Castorr addresses Lions Club Meeting Galveston Daily News December 7, 1945

Colonel L. Robert Castorr new commanding officer of the local army recruiting station told members of the Lions Club yesterday of his experiences while training troops for combat in Burma and China. Lt. Col. Castorr has seen war service in Africa, Europe and the China-Burma-India Theaters of operation. He recounted combat maneuvers that had to be used against the Japanese. He also talked briefly of the new army recruiting campaign.

During the War the OSS [apparently on Donovan's initiative] joined some forces with the NKVD. Then each spied on the other - the Soviets apparently getting the upper hand here. A few fascinating glimpses of this. Seems it has a lot to do with Donovan being axed and the rise of Dulles and many other such changes at the end of the war. Here is one short document. Each had spies in the other - but the Russians were much more successful at this and ran circles around the Americans in most respects. Part of the strong anti-communist reaction of McCarthy, Nixon and others was [in part] a reaction to this, IMO. I think this even plays into the biases and players who were later connected to the JFK assassination. [though the connections are complex and not linear!] Book 8 in this hard to get and expensive series is also on this matter:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covert_Warfare_(book)

One of the reasons that the Soviets had so much success was that they recruited men and women who were playing the role of right-wingers. Meanwhile, the FBI/CIA concentrated on those who were on the left. Of course, these are the last ones that the Soviets would have used. The classic example of the this was Kim Philby. He was a well-known Marxist at university. He then pretended he had moved sharply to the right and joined neo-fascist organizations. He was then recruited by British intelligence that at the time was being run by fascist sympathizers. In reality, Philby was still a Marxist and had been recruited by the Soviets in the 1930s. He played the role so well he became close friends with James Angleton. When evidence emerged that Philby might be a spy in the late 1950s, Angleton investigated him and gave him the all clear. This allowed him to get away. Angleton never got over this and after this incident he thought everyone was a Soviet spy.
