UNDERGROUND COLLECTION

This is a sample of a huge collection of US Underground Magazines. I was just looking through it to find something related and quickly came across this to illustrate the various info that was recorded by unofficial organs. There are handwritten one issue jobs, The Berkley Barb, Texan uni mags etc etc. At the moment I'm trying to digitize an interview with the custodian and will post it then. Meanwhile should anyone wish a particular issue of anything I'll see if it's there. There are many thousands of items in the entire collection.

A major part of the collection, in terms of numbers of images, is about 230 rolls of microfilm each with hundreds of images produced by Bell and Howell (who didn't follow up on a commttment to do more). There are other sections that are hard copies. Fortunately the collection has slept quite peacefully over the years.

It was the great fore sight of the (3) collectors that made it possible by scouring US sources (libraries etc) in the mid 70's to gather the unofficial (though the touch of COINTELPRO is undoubtedly there too, good in a way, it's by cross referencing to the OFFICIAL slant of the same event) street story.

To thoroughly go through everything would take a lifetime. But it's a unique snapshot (like this hyperlinked Forum) of a particular period of time that will probably be the basis of studies (like this Forum) in centuries to come for students of the late 20'th early 21'st century. As the custodian (one of the three) says, : 'priceless'. There is an ongoing process to eventually digitize the lot.

The second last time I studied it (first was shortly after it was gathered) (later, I brought it up in one of the early posts when joining the forum) the state of it was excellent and indicative of largely being completely untouched (except by me and a few others) but rubber bands were so deteriorated they disintegrated on touching, they have now been replaced. Parts are such that they must be kept under lock and key in proper atmospheric conditions, but while other street docs are dust, this is not.

Excellent.

Here's a larger version of 'money troubles'.

(plus, just for fun, (not part of the collection :) ), she's so gorgeous that she had to cut her hair off to be taken seriously...

Ok, I'll start with Village Voice, April '76 (and any other publication of around that date) and follow any thread backwards till mid 60's. There's a need, due to the size of the collection, to have specific dates, names, events, in order to fit it in with times available.

That document in the initial post you made, referencing RFK's assassination and Jim Garrison's reflections on it is very interesting, It's a shame that section in the upper right corner is illegible, or, at least it appears so to me....

So is all of this material on the photobucket website, or is there any archive online where the material is grouped together?

Nice Work!

Robert, they're in storage, not digitized, there's a process to digitize and make available.

I find time in life to just begin to look and scan, there are thousands of items to go through. The first scan was poorly done from a perfect copy, I just got some settings wrong. Given the size of the collection and limits on time (life interferes), time to drive to this 'timecapsule', opportunity, and how engrossing it all is, one spemds hours loading films, scrolling through (and almost all is of interest in some way) makes for the need for a more organised approach (which is why I asked for starting points). re the village voice, apparently in '73 subscribers stopped receiving issues so something must have happened here. Perhaps generally it seems that the Vietcong victory was celebrated but quickly overshadowed by Watergate. RFK's assassination seems to have launched a number of titles. An overalll impression is that a large number of US citicens seem to have been sane and believed in freedom and were prepared to fight for it, and were well organised through this, (perhaps rudimentary Forum), connected and united. COINTELPRO with various 'anonymous' input tried to create disunity. eg Fly United (safe tripping a la KoolAid parties), led to a derogatory and offensive poster from the FBI that appeared to be of radical origin but very provocative in a divisive. This is how they seemed to operate, divide and try to rule, so time was sometimes wasted dealing with that and just defending the right to disagree with the establishment who came down on them like a ton of bricks with sanctified murder, arrests and intimidation. In a way, the collection is a manual of how to deal with the crap the establishment throws and trying to sort out right from wrong.

Thanks for going to the trouble to post more of these, the Abbie Hoffman interview was pretty interesting.....re the above, I had recently read Richard Helm's - A Look Over My Shoulder, and he spoke about how despite no supporting evidence, LBJ was convinced that the domestic unrest re Vietnam was due to Communist influence, although I suspect Hoover nurtured LBJ's opinion on this.

Again thanks.

Look, Robert, it's no trouble. Thank you for your input. I agree with the custodian, it's 'priceless', and it MUST be protected, digtized, and disseminated, and quickly and with regard to safety. If it can contribute positively then that is thanks enough, that's a motivator of the collectors. I mean to regard someone worthy of an exemplary quality amongst a nest of vipers, the only honorable thing is to consider what he would have wanted. RFK can be said to reflect this. So analyzing Kennedys method one must take into account his inclusive, informed scholarly approach with the gathering of data. This is a very large repository of data, much of it unknown to me, much of it very revealing to anyone wanting to immerse their study through the minds of the people there then from their perspective. The posted items are just so easy to come across and are posted just as samples of a little bit of what is there, to inspire ANY help, it's jampacked with stuff like that. Anyone can afford it, come here, I'll put you up and we can scour the collection from whatever perspective (agency personell need not apply)

I need a focus. Robert can you give me one.date, names events etc and I'll see if there is anything the street knew that is not knowable through studying official history. make it roughly mid sixties to mid seventies, any state, region, city, town, school.

John this might be a bit broad but I would be curious about writings on the topic of CIA interventions in the 1968 Democratic primaries. The variety of different things would be the key here (an impossibility??). Of course it would be very easy to read too much into any one piece but it still could be good family entertainmen-- provided one doesn't live in Southern California!

Well, that was an experience. I got to mid a's and realised the thing to do is to create a searchable database. Something where all are categorised by name, state, date, subject matter of mag. Some are philosophical. Some are artistic, others are devoted to the antiwar movement, others to race issues, others general news and so on. Too much time is spent searching and being distracted by other things. What would work better is a printout or on memstick saved listing derived from that. Anyway, in the search for the above, which will continue as time permits, various other things, some not for family entertainment :

Thanks a million John. I dont know which will require more mulling-- the Pheonix Program stills or the passe durre of that advanced rice crispie verse. Note the fallout from the Dynamics General Dallas F111 handywork. Need more time to mull over CIA stuff.

John, my suggestion would be to look at anything dealing with leads regarding persons in Dallas, New Orleans, Miami, Philadelphia as well as O.N.I., regarding persons associated with the JFK assassination, with a special emphasis regarding genealogical connections.

I will give an example

For instance Bertha Cheek had two Cuban's who rented from her circa 1958, 1959, there are documents at NARA that appear to be postponed in full with her name listed as well as someone named Jess Willard Lynch. In the Warren Commission there is a reference to someone named Denver Lee Cheek, who may or may not not be related to her, [he is listed as "possibly being a Negro," but what is unusual is that he was interviewed and there was no reference to what his ethnicity was,] I cite this as the types of things that could unravel associations......

Another point of reference, would be other genealogy related issues such as the fact that

in a Pacific Stars and Stripes undated, but very likely to have been within days of November 22, 1963 there is an article entitled "Pop" Cowan to leave Okinawa for US," while Arthur W.A. Cowan comes to mind, it is also a documented fact that the FBI spent some time attempting to determine who someone with the last name Cowan was,[1] I believe, because the name appeared in one of Jack Ruby's notebooks, or maybe the Graphics List.......anyway the Pacific Stars & Stripes article is below......

1 [but gave up....because there were so many Cowan's in the Dallas phone book, which was true but the question is was there something the FBI knew that they didn't want on the record]

All of this is at your discretion, as far as how much effort you feel you should give to it, I am merely responding to the post you made regarding what to look for.....

Thank you, Robert and Nathaniel, the input has been most helpful.

The best thing, it seems to me, is to create a searchable database with an ocr feature, perhaps a pdf doc? ,

I'll continue to zero in on those issues requested and post anything I come across, plus generally interesting stuff.

I want to camp there and put in a concerted effore to do this, but other life committments have to be incorporated, so it may take some time, but the commitment and (I feel) urgency is there. The collection spreads from 63 onwards. Driving there, a couple of hours, dealing with some problems that comes out of an oldtime linear classification, locating items (which on occasion are not where they 'should' be, copying, driving back and posting, must be streamlined, so I'll focus on a database to start with. I'll find someone who can help me with that, re which program to use et.c., Then I can post the database and requests can be more efficiently followed up.

It's the efficiency that seems to me most important to start with, so thank you for giving an exercise in order to find this out. Meanwhile also a start on a systematic digitizing of everything, with ongoing posting of items.
