ROSENBLOOM, CARROLL.

The owners of there NFL football teams - the Dallas Cowboys, the New Orleans Saints and the Baltimore Colts, became entwined in the drama that revolved around the assassinaton of President Kennedy.

Of course the Cowobys, with the Hunts, Merchesons and Wynnes are mentioned prominently in the JFK assassination lore, though John Mecom, Jr. of the Saints, is less so. George DeMohrenschildt, the accused assassin's mentor, traveled to Yougslavica on oil business for John Mecom, Sr., and his son, besides owning the Saints, was said to be in the banking business with Leon Trujaque, a New Orleans Import-Export merchent who employed the accused assassin at the same time DeMohresnchildt was in Yougslacvica.

Then there's Carroll Rosenbloom, owner of the Baltimore Colts, who was unfortunate enough to buy, from Meyer Lansky, major interest in the Hotel Nacional in Havana, shortly before Fidel Castro took over. Rosenbloom also bankrolled other mobsters who became entwined in the CIA/Mafia plots to kill Castro and let LBJ stay at his beach house during the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City.

While the owners of the Cowboys and the Saints are closer tied to the people present at Dealey Plaza when JFK was killed, I am already familiar with Rosenbloom as a character in my book "Birth of the Birdie - The First 100 Years of Golf at Atlantic City Country Club."

In reviewing sports history there's a lot of ink spilt on the players and the games, but very little about the team and club owners, who were in many ways, major players in much bigger games. .

While I know very little about the Hunts or Mecoms, other than their appearance as characters in the Kennedy assassination, I do know quite a bit about Carroll Rosenbloom.

I know, for instance, how to spell his name, with two rs, two ls, and two oos, and that he lived at the Jersey Shore, in a beach house at Margate, and was a well respected and prominent member of the Atlantic City Country Club.

Rosenbloom, a wealthy industrialist who owned the Baltimore Colts, also lent Leo Fraser the money to purchase the club from Leo's brother Sonny Fraser, who was forced to sell the club in order to open the Atlantic City Race Track, along with his partners H. "Hap" Farley and Jack Kelly (Grace's dad). There were illegal slot machines in the Tap Room of the country club, and Sen. Smathers of Florida, who didn't want the race track competition, was making an issue it, so instead of getting rid of the slot machines, Sonny sold the country club to his brother Leo, just back from the war.

Leo Fraser borrowed the six figures to buy the club from his golfing pal, Carroll Rosenbloom, and paid him back every penny.

Rosenbloom was a legend in the men's locker room at the Atlantic City Country Club. where Al Capone allegedly hid out for a week during the 1929 organized crime convention.

Then there was the greatest football game ever played. Legend has it that Rosenbloom called in the final scoring play from the Atlantic City locker room, having them run the ball for a touchdown instead of a field goal, which wouldn't have covered the spread. I know that's not true because Rosenbloom would have been at the game and not in the locker room. But some say the bet and the play were true.

A serious gambler, Rosenbloom was suspected of being the "anonymous" member of the Atlantic City Country Club who promised to increase the purse of the US Women's Open if Babe Zaharius could break 300 for the tournament. When she came in at 301, she said it was okay not getting the bonus as it would put her in a different tax bracket.

Rosenbloom had a Cuban connection, and took the Atlantic City Country Club golf pro down to Havana to play the golf pro at the Havana Country Club, for major stakes. One of Rossenbloom's golfing pals was Al Bessellink, a Merchantville Country Club pro who became a notorious golfer on the pro tour. Another one of Rossenbloom's foursome, Mike McLaney, convinced him to buy major interest in the Hotel Nacional from Meyer Lansky, shortly before Castro came to power. Good deal, bad timing.

Then in the summer of 1964, Rosenbloom served as unofficial host to President Lyndon Johnson during the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City. Johnson had a hotel room, and was officially listed as staying there, but he thought Bobby Kennedy had the room bugged and was trying to take over the convention, so he moved into Carroll Rosenbloom's beach house in nearby Margate.

It was no secret after awhile, and people who gathered outside the house were sometimes pleased to be greeted by Lady Bird, who is remembered as a real lady.

LBJ on the other hand, was a real Son of a Bitch. It's a shame he didn't play golf, he may have been a better person.

Rosenbloom then became the international man of mystery when he was found floating dead in the waters off his Florida home, having drowned suspiciously. His ball team, having traded the Colts for the Rams even up (to avoid capitol gains) was taken over by his wife, and the rest is history.

Although the gambling angle is well documented, primarily by Dan Moldea, the Cuban angle is only referenced by Gus Russo (Live by the Sword), and there's really very little on LBJ's stay at Rossenbloom's Margate White House.

Moldea's investigation into NFL gambling even led to gruesome autopsy photos of Rosenbloom being published and broadcast on TV, while Russo alleges a golfing connection between old man Joe Kennedy, President Kennedy and Mike McLaney, their Palm Beach neighbor.

If you read all the quotes below, you eventually get to Bert Bell, Jr., for whom the NFL Bert Bell Award is named, and a Philadelphia football personage, whose son, Bert Bell III, took the photo that is my avatar on the Education Forum.

For instance, Bubba Smith, a defensive lineman for the Baltimore Colts, had told Playboy that the 1969 Super Bowl, featuring the heroics of New York Jets' quarterback Joe Namath, had been fixed; that Carroll Rosenbloom, then the owner of the Colts, had bet against his own team.

Legend has it that Colts owner Carroll Rosenbloom had bet thousands of dollars on his team, which was favored by anywhere from 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 points. But the players insisted that because Myhra was unreliable, they went for the TD.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fifty years ago the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts took the NFL title game to sudden death and launched pro football on a ride to the top of U.S. sports with what came to be known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played."

The golden anniversary of that 23-17 upset win on December 28, 1958 by a Colts team led by young quarterback Johnny Unitas has inspired a passel of books this holiday season, a television retrospective and musings on how far football has come.

"A crowning moment at the right time," Pro Football Hall of Fame spokesman Joe Horrigan told Reuters about the 1958 title contest in a telephone interview from Canton, Ohio. "It lifted the game to new heights."

Television networks saw football's potential as entertainment on the small screen, entrepreneurs figured there was room for expansion and the game went on a dizzying growth spurt that matured into a business with $7 billion in revenues last year.

"That was the game that definitely put professional football on the map," Super Bowl champion coach Tom Coughlin of the Giants said in an ESPN show in which modern-day Giants and Colts reflected on the game with men who played in it.

That contest showcased 15 future Hall of Famers, including Baltimore's Unitas, wide receiver Raymond Berry and running back/receiver Lenny Moore, and New York halfback Frank Gifford, linebacker Sam Huff and defensive end Andy Robustelli.

Baltimore coach Weeb Ewbank, who later led the underdog New York Jets to a 1969 Super Bowl triumph over the Colts, also ended up in the Hall, as did the Giants' offensive and defensive coordinators Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry.

The see-saw struggle at Yankee Stadium produced the first "fifth quarter" in pro football, which ended with fullback Alan Amache's one-yard plunge into the end zone, and coincided with the blossoming of television.

Network rights to broadcast the 1958 game fetched $100,000. The NFL now gets some $3.7 billion a year from TV contracts.

Despite a slew of fumbles, the game had drama, controversy and a unique ending, grabbing attention at a time when baseball ruled and pro football was secondary to the college game.

"Sometimes things just align," Horrigan said. "It just brought everything into alignment."

NEWSPAPER STRIKE

The NFL brought Moore, Berry, Gifford and New York placekicker team mate Pat Summerall together to reminisce about the game in a conference call.

"More TV sets turned on to see a football game played in the fifth quarter," Gifford said. "All the New York newspapers were on strike that week so it got more attention nationally. More national papers sent reporters."

Unitas drove the Colts 86 yards in the closing minutes, throwing repeatedly to Berry to set up a 20-yard field goal with seven seconds left that tied the game 17-17.

"It was kind of like the advent of what teams call the two-minute drill that Johnny U perfected," Moore said. "The way he kind of took over for us to get that tying score."

Baltimore staged that drive after stopping Gifford short of a first down on a controversial play.

Gifford felt he had made the first down but was denied an accurate spotting of the ball when Baltimore's huge defensive lineman Big Daddy Lipscomb dived into the pile and fell on team mate Gino Marchetti, who howled in pain from a broken leg.

"The referee came over, took the ball from me and went and helped Marchetti up," recounted Gifford. "Then he came back and spotted the ball."

The ball was placed short of the first down and New York punted back to Baltimore. "That just increased the aura around this game," Gifford said.

Gifford and Summerall both enjoyed long careers in sports broadcasting after their playing careers.

Summerall said the '58 game underlined the NFL's appeal.

"A game that was almost designed for TV, with timeouts, a halftime and huddles that allowed for people to talk about the strategy for the next play. It was made for television."

BUILT FRANCHISE

Gifford noted that the NFL had 12 teams with 35-man rosters compared to 32 franchises with 53-man rosters today, and said the game inspired others to want to get involved.

"Lamar Hunt at age 27 went to the NFL wanting an expansion franchise. When he couldn't get a franchise he went out and built one. He knew there were plenty of players."

Hunt helped to form the American Football League that began play in 1960.

"Lamar was a team mate of mine at SMU (Southern Methodist University)," recalled Berry. "I had no idea his father was a rich oil man."

Bidding wars for players led the leagues in 1966 to agree to merge by 1970 and stage a title game at the end of the 1966 season that became known as the Super Bowl.

By then, the NFL had already begun its current 43-year run as the most popular sport in the U.S., according to the Harris Poll.

Berry remembered an indelible moment after the '58 game.

"I think back to Bert Bell after the game," the great possession receiver said. "He had tears in his eyes.

"I had been in the league for four years and I was looking at the commissioner of the NFL and wondered what chord had been struck. I think he had understood what a tremendous thing had happened to the league he had run for so long."

INTERTEL'S other major client in the 1960's was Life Magazine. They were Life's security agency at the time Jim Garrison was trying to get access to the Z-film.

As far as Peloquin goes he is still shilling for organized crime. He got himself named to the audit board for Louis DeNaples Mount Airy Lodge and Casino.

I know for a fact, from neighbors and people who were there at the time, that LBJ stayed at Carroll Rosenbloom's beach house on Absecon Island during the 1964 Democratic National Convention.

But I can't find a published reference to that anywhere.

Is it mentioned in Teddy White's The Making of a President 1964? Which I don't have.

Or does anybody have a reference for it other than me?

I can give you some references.....but I'm getting the impression that you have some other agenda here than following the leads where ever they lead.

You brought up Rosenbloom, and for that, I thank you. But then you ignored my question to you in my last post here, and you posted you wanted to avoid the subject of Rosenbloom's widow, Georgia, although it is all over the internet that Lou Chesler had had a relationship with her and introduced her to Rosenbloom.

Please correct me, because I hope my impression is wrong. There seem to be plenty of connecting relationships to discuss here, with promising potential. Point me in a direction, if you have a suggestion, or pursue these leads yourself, or tell me I am wrong.....nothing to see here....

A Fast $70 Million

The two high-altitude standouts on last week's gyrating American Stock Exchange (see Wall Street) were General Development Corp. and Universal Controls, Inc. Shares of General Development, the mailorder merchandiser of Florida houses and lots (TIME, May 19), zipped from 59⅛ to 69⅝, and its success boomed the stock of a flock of lesser companies planning Florida land developments. Universal Controls, an electronics maker, moved from 84 to 97. Both stocks have more than doubled since Jan. 1. Last week Universal announced a four-for-one stock split, plus a 10% stock dividend and a boost in the yearly cash dividend from $1 to $1.20 on the present stock. General Development leaked word of a three-for-one split, planned after the company distributes a 25% stock dividend in mid-May.

Unknown Giant. The man who benefited most from the fast rise is an up-from-the-sidewalks Canadian financier and promoter, Louis Arthur Chesler, 46, chairman and prime mover of both Universal and General. Lou Chesler came to the U.S. three years ago with $4,000,000, has since run up a paper profit of $70 million on his Universal and General holdings alone. Yet few Wall Streeters know him, since he keeps in the background, trains the limelight on his U.S.-born junior partners.

A bulging (6 ft. 2 in., 256 lbs.), blue-eyed son of an immigrant Lithuanian shopkeeper, Chesler grew up in Peterborough, Ont., quit university to go to work on Toronto's Bay Street. As a customer's man for the brokerage firm of Draper Dobie & Co. Ltd., he showed a talent for picking the right stocks, later grew rich underwriting dozens of Canada's new mining projects, chiefly those of Ventures Limited, the mining colossus.

...Beginning no later than 1960, Lansky hatched a grand scheme to create a "Hong Kong West" (2) in the Caribbean: an offshore center that would bring together gambling, narcotics, dirty money, and Murder Inc. under one unregulated and "highly respectable" roof.

First, Lansky picked the Grand Bahamas Island as the site for a plush casino-resort. Operating through a Canadian "cutout," longtime business associate Louis Chesler, Lansky negotiated a purchase of a large tract of land on the island and oversaw the construction of a grand hotel, the Lucayan Beach Hotel, which was completed and opened for business before the end of 1963. (3) At the time the venture began, casino gambling was illegal in the Grand Bahamas — except for those hotels that received a Certificate of Exemption from the Bahamian government.

The most powerful political figure on the island, chief of the so-called "Bay Street Boys," was Sir Stafford Sands. Several meetings between Sands and Chesler and $1,800,000 in bribery later, Lansky received his Certificate of Exemption on March 27, 1963. On January 22,1964, the casino at Lucayan Beach was opened under festive circumstances that Hank Messick described as follows:

The international jet set was on hand to give the event some class, but Meyer Lansky's veterans were in complete control. Red Ritter was general manager; Max Courtney was credit manager; Charley Brudner was his assistant; Dino Cellini was supervisor, and so on. As a matter of fact, Dino had operated a school in London to train the dealers and stick men who came originally from Sicily by way of the syndicate casino on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. (4)

Phase One of Lansky's "Operation Respectable" completed, the old wizard proceeded with the next steps. First, he cleared the way for a consortium of "legitimate" investors headed by the Miami-based Mary Carter Paint Company to buy into Hog Island (renamed Paradise Island by its owner Huntington Hartford, the multimillionaire magnate of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company) and to receive a Certificate of Exemption for the construction of a hotel-gambling casino. Sir Stafford Sands, now in Lansky's hip pocket, saw these measures through and simultaneously announced that the Bahamian government was undertaking the construction of a bridge connecting Grand Bahamas to Hog Island, to be completed by December 31,1967. What sort of weird entity was Mary Carter Paints and why had Meyer Lansky gone out of his way to open all the doors on Bay Street to it?

To begin with the obvious, Mary Carter Paint Company was involved in more than wall coverings. In 1958, it was effectively taken over by merger with the Crosby-Miller Co. — a Florida company about which little is known except that former New York Governor and two-time Republican presidential candidate Thomas Dewey was one of its biggest investors. (6) Dewey's "Mr. Clean" crime buster reputation, dating back to his days as special prosecutor during the 1940s, was a perfect cover for Lansky's move to Paradise Island.

Via the 1958 merger, the president of Mary Carter Paint Company was James M. Crosby. Crosby's brother, Peter Crosby, was a convicted stock swindler and a close business associate of Dino Cellini. Cellini was the first lieutenant to Meyer Lansky and was known as Florida's "connection" to Canadian heroin trafficker Guiseppi Cotroni. So even with Gov. Thomas Dewey's Anglophile profile on the label of every can of Mary Carter Paint, the product was severely tarnished by big-time crime.

Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba in 1959 had been a bitter pill for the Lansky syndicate to swallow; however, it taught the old wizard a valuable lesson: don't take politics for granted. Before he socked tens of millions of dollars into his Grand Bahamas dreamland, Lansky would make absolutely certain that he was treading on solid political ground.

So, in 1964, Lansky arranged a small scandal centered around the sudden "revelation" that Lucayan Beach promoter Lou Chesler had connections to organized crime boss Meyer Lansky! Chesler left the island no doubt laughing all the way to the bank, and Lansky became invisible.

Next, Lansky moved to overthrow the deeply entrenched and corrupted Bay Street Boys (the "Batistas of the Bahamas") and impose a new government committed to the public welfare of the Bahamian population — as long as the welfare was provided by revenues from lucrative gambling takes. Covertly, Lansky political operatives — often men like Big Mike McLaney, who had been Lansky's bagman for payoffs to Cuban dictator Batista — began to heavily bankroll the Progressive Liberal Party representing the islands' black majority. (7)

At the same time, Lansky began releasing blackmail dossiers on the Bay Street Boys. First, James Crosby went to the Justice Department to meet with Robert Peloquin of the Organized Crime Strike Force. Crosby clinched a deal with Peloquin (representing Robert Kennedy's "secret team"). Shortly thereafter Peloquin launched a full-scale investigation into "corruption in the Grand Bahamas" — using the evidence provided through Lansky. Another Lansky front man, Tex McCrary, began leaking material to the press. McCrary's leaks enabled the Wall Street Journal to win the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for a lengthy series of articles exposing the connections between organized crime and the ruling political elite of the island — the Bay Streeters. (8)

Following the Crosby-Peloquin meeting, in 1965 the Internal Revenue Service — in conjunction with the Organized Crime section of the Justice Department — embarked on "Operation Tradewinds," ostensibly an investigation into "hot money" operations in the Bahamas. Heading the IRS side of the investigation was William Koler. Running the effort from the Justice Department was Robert Peloquin, working in close contact with Organized Crime and Racketeering section head Henry Peterson and Criminal Division head William Hundley.

By Christmas, 1966, growing scandals had presented the Bay Street Boys with a fait accompli. They called for elections and, on January 10, 1967, were driven out of office by the Progressive Liberal Party. Progressive chairman Lynden O. Pindling became Premier, and he petitioned for the convening of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to handle the organized crime penetration and control over Bay Street. The commission was convened in February 1967 under the chairmanship of Sir Ranulph Bacon, former head of Scotland Yard. Its investigation was based almost exclusively on the Lansky dossiers, which were passed on to Sir Ranulph by the Operation Tradewinds crew. (9)

By March 1967, all competitors with Mary Carter Paint Company had withdrawn their bids on the Hog Island land in fear that they would be exposed for their corrupt ties to Bay Street. Before the end of the month, Sir Stafford Sands packed his bags and retired to a castle in Spain.

Lansky, as the business agent for Dope, Incorporated, had completed a most silent coup d'etat. In rapid succession, all the rats surfaced to claim their just rewards.

Peloquin and Hundley "retired" from the Justice Department, opened up a law firm, and within a month were retained to manage the legal affairs of "Resorts International" — the new name adopted by Mary Carter Paints in 1966 when it made the bid for Hog Island. Both men became vice presidents of Paradise Enterprise, Inc., the Resorts International subsidiary that owns the island. .....

Secretary to the Senate's Democrats, set up a meeting for casino operators interested in gambling franchises in

The hotelman, Clifford Jones, part owner of the Thunderbird in the Nevada resort, said Baker had no financial interest

in the matter and got "nothing but my good will, which he has anyway." Bakers outside financial affairs as currently

under investigation by the Senate Rules Committee.

Jones who does not hold the gambling concession in the Las Vegas hotel, does have casino interests in the West Indies.

He was quoted as saying he got an invitation last summer to put in a bid for the gambling franchise at a hotel in Curacao.

He said he did not know anyone in the ownership of the hotel and told Baker "I would be happy id Baker could arrange a meeting."

Jones said he did no know how Baker went about setting the meeting up but there was a conference in New York in June at which

Baker introduced him to John Gates, President of Intercontinental Hotels, Inc., a subsidiary of Pan American Airways.

Other participants in the talk with Gates, Jones, said, were Jacob Kozloff, who runs gambling operations in Aruba, and

Edward Levinson, owner of the Fremont Hotel in Las Vegas.

Subsequently, Jones said, there was a second meeting with Gates in which Baker took no part. Under discussion, her said, were

gambling concessions in both Curacao and the Dominican Republic. He said neither contract has been awarded yet.

Samuel Pryor, a Vice President of Pan American, was quoted as saying Baker phoned him to ask who was the proper person in Pan

American to see about bidding on the concessions. He said he mentioned Gates' name and later "I called Gates and told him what

they wanted." Pryor said that was all he knew about the negotiations.

"I know Bobby Baker," Pryor said. "Lyndon Johnson is a good friend of mine and Bobby was his assistant. It looked to me

that Bobby Baker was doing a political favor for Jones and Levinson.

I know for a fact, from neighbors and people who were there at the time, that LBJ stayed at Carroll Rosenbloom's beach house on Absecon Island during the 1964 Democratic National Convention.
But I can't find a published reference to that anywhere.

Is it mentioned in Teddy White's The Making of a President 1964? Which I don't have.

Or does anybody have a reference for it other than me?

I can give you some references.....but I'm getting the impression that you have some other agenda here than following the leads where ever they lead.

You brought up Rosenbloom, and for that, I thank you. But then you ignored my question to you in my last post here, and you posted you wanted to avoid the subject of Rosenbloom's widow, Georgia, although it is all over the internet that Lou Chesler had had a relationship with her and introduced her to Rosenbloom.

Please correct me, because I hope my impression is wrong. There seem to be plenty of connecting relationships to discuss here, with promising potential. Point me in a direction, if you have a suggestion, or pursue these leads yourself, or tell me I am wrong.....nothing to see here....

Unknown Giant. The man who benefited most from the fast rise is an up-from-the-sidewalks Canadian financier and promoter, Louis Arthur Chesler, 46, chairman and prime mover of both Universal and General. Lou Chesler came to the U.S. three years ago with $4,000,000, has since run up a paper profit of $70 million on his Universal and General holdings alone. Yet few Wall Streeters know him, since he keeps in the background, trains the limelight on his U.S.-born junior partners.

As a matter of fact, Dino had operated a school in London to train the dealers and stick men who came originally from Sicily by way of the syndicate casino on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. (4)

Phase One of Lansky's "Operation Respectable" completed, the old wizard proceeded with the next steps. First, he cleared the way for a consortium of "legitimate" investors headed by the Miami-based Mary Carter Paint Company to buy into Hog Island (renamed Paradise Island by its owner Huntington Hartford, the multimillionaire magnate of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company) and to receive a Certificate of Exemption for the construction of a hotel-gambling casino. Sir Stafford Sands, now in Lansky's hip pocket, saw these measures through and simultaneously announced that the Bahamian government was undertaking the construction of a bridge connecting Grand Bahamas to Hog Island, to be completed by December 31,1967. (5)

What sort of weird entity was Mary Carter Paints and why had Meyer Lansky gone out of his way to open all the doors on Bay Street to it?

To begin with the obvious, Mary Carter Paint Company was involved in more than wall coverings. In 1958, it was effectively taken over by merger with the Crosby-Miller Co. — a Florida company about which little is known except that former New York Governor and two-time Republican presidential candidate Thomas Dewey was one of its biggest investors. (6) Dewey's "Mr. Clean" crime buster reputation, dating back to his days as special prosecutor during the 1940s, was a perfect cover for Lansky's move to Paradise Island.

Via the 1958 merger, the president of Mary Carter Paint Company was James M. Crosby. Crosby's brother, Peter Crosby, was a convicted stock swindler and a close business associate of Dino Cellini. Cellini was the first lieutenant to Meyer Lansky and was known as Florida's "connection" to Canadian heroin trafficker Guiseppi Cotroni. So even with Gov. Thomas Dewey's Anglophile profile on the label of every can of Mary Carter Paint, the product was severely tarnished by big-time crime.

Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba in 1959 had been a bitter pill for the Lansky syndicate to swallow; however, it taught the old wizard a valuable lesson: don't take politics for granted. Before he socked tens of millions of dollars into his Grand Bahamas dreamland, Lansky would make absolutely certain that he was treading on solid political ground.

So, in 1964, Lansky arranged a small scandal centered around the sudden "revelation" that Lucayan Beach promoter Lou Chesler had connections to organized crime boss Meyer Lansky! Chesler left the island no doubt laughing all the way to the bank, and Lansky became invisible.

Next, Lansky moved to overthrow the deeply entrenched and corrupted Bay Street Boys (the "Batistas of the Bahamas") and impose a new government committed to the public welfare of the Bahamian population — as long as the welfare was provided by revenues from lucrative gambling takes. Covertly, Lansky political operatives — often men like Big Mike McLaney, who had been Lansky's bagman for payoffs to Cuban dictator Batista — began to heavily bankroll the Progressive Liberal Party representing the islands' black majority. (7)

At the same time, Lansky began releasing blackmail dossiers on the Bay Street Boys. First, James Crosby went to the Justice Department to meet with Robert Peloquin of the Organized Crime Strike Force. Crosby clinched a deal with Peloquin (representing Robert Kennedy's "secret team"). Shortly thereafter Peloquin launched a full-scale investigation into "corruption in the Grand Bahamas" — using the evidence provided through Lansky. Another Lansky front man, Tex McCrary, began leaking material to the press. McCrary's leaks enabled the Wall Street Journal to win the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for a lengthy series of articles exposing the connections between organized crime and the ruling political elite of the island — the Bay Streeters. (8)

Following the Crosby-Peloquin meeting, in 1965 the Internal Revenue Service — in conjunction with the Organized Crime section of the Justice Department — embarked on "Operation Tradewinds," ostensibly an investigation into "hot money" operations in the Bahamas. Heading the IRS side of the investigation was William Koler. Running the effort from the Justice Department was Robert Peloquin, working in close contact with Organized Crime and Racketeering section head Henry Peterson and Criminal Division head William Hundley.

By Christmas, 1966, growing scandals had presented the Bay Street Boys with a fait accompli. They called for elections and, on January 10, 1967, were driven out of office by the Progressive Liberal Party. Progressive chairman Lynden O. Pindling became Premier, and he petitioned for the convening of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to handle the organized crime penetration and control over Bay Street. The commission was convened in February 1967 under the chairmanship of Sir Ranulph Bacon, former head of Scotland Yard. Its investigation was based almost exclusively on the Lansky dossiers, which were passed on to Sir Ranulph by the Operation Tradewinds crew. (9)

By March 1967, all competitors with Mary Carter Paint Company had withdrawn their bids on the Hog Island land in fear that they would be exposed for their corrupt ties to Bay Street. Before the end of the month, Sir Stafford Sands packed his bags and retired to a castle in Spain.

Lansky, as the business agent for Dope, Incorporated, had completed a most silent coup d'etat. In rapid succession, all the rats surfaced to claim their just rewards.

Peloquin and Hundley "retired" from the Justice Department, opened up a law firm, and within a month were retained to manage the legal affairs of "Resorts International" — the new name adopted by Mary Carter Paints in 1966 when it made the bid for Hog Island. Both men became vice presidents of Paradise Enterprise, Inc., the Resorts International subsidiary that owns the island. .....

Secretary to the Senate's Democrats, set up a meeting for casino operators interested in gambling franchises in

Caribbean hotels.

The hotelman, Clifford Jones, part owner of the Thunderbird in the Nevada resort, said Baker had no financial interest

in the matter and got "nothing but my good will, which he has anyway." Bakers outside financial affairs as currently

under investigation by the Senate Rules Committee.

Jones who does not hold the gambling concession in the Las Vegas hotel, does have casino interests in the West Indies.

He was quoted as saying he got an invitation last summer to put in a bid for the gambling franchise at a hotel in Curacao.

He said he did not know anyone in the ownership of the hotel and told Baker "I would be happy id Baker could arrange a meeting."

Jones said he did no know how Baker went about setting the meeting up but there was a conference in New York in June at which

Baker introduced him to John Gates, President of Intercontinental Hotels, Inc., a subsidiary of Pan American Airways.

Other participants in the talk with Gates, Jones, said, were Jacob Kozloff, who runs gambling operations in Aruba, and

Edward Levinson, owner of the Fremont Hotel in Las Vegas.

Subsequently, Jones said, there was a second meeting with Gates in which Baker took no part. Under discussion, her said, were

gambling concessions in both Curacao and the Dominican Republic. He said neither contract has been awarded yet.

Samuel Pryor, a Vice President of Pan American, was quoted as saying Baker phoned him to ask who was the proper person in Pan

American to see about bidding on the concessions. He said he mentioned Gates' name and later "I called Gates and told him what

they wanted." Pryor said that was all he knew about the negotiations.

"I know Bobby Baker," Pryor said. "Lyndon Johnson is a good friend of mine and Bobby was his assistant. It looked to me

that Bobby Baker was doing a political favor for Jones and Levinson.

Baker is reputed to have been backed by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, former Senate Majority Leader, in the post of Secretary

to the Democratic members.

I know for a fact, from neighbors and people who were there at the time, that LBJ stayed at Carroll Rosenbloom's beach house on Absecon Island during the 1964 Democratic National Convention.
But I can't find a published reference to that anywhere.

Is it mentioned in Teddy White's The Making of a President 1964? Which I don't have.

Or does anybody have a reference for it other than me?

But I can't find a published reference to that anywhere.

Remains of Upshaw's ex-wife found

AFTON, Okla. -- A skeleton found last month under a fence on rural property was identified as the ex-wife of Gene Upshaw.

The cause of Jimmye Lee Hill-Upshaw's death is under investigation, said Kym Koch, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

It does not appear the 59-year-old woman was the victim of foul play, Koch said.

Hill-Upshaw married Gene Upshaw in 1967 and later divorced. They had one son, Eugene Upshaw III. Gene Upshaw is the executive director of the NFL Players Association.

The woman did not have a known permanent address, which made it difficult to identify her, Koch said. Authorities believe she visited Grand Lake Mental Health Clinic in Afton earlier this year.

An Afton family member found the skeletal remains Sept. 23.

I can give you some references.....but I'm getting the impression that you have some other agenda here than following the leads where ever they lead.

You brought up Rosenbloom, and for that, I thank you. But then you ignored my question to you in my last post here, and you posted you wanted to avoid the subject of Rosenbloom's widow, Georgia, although it is all over the internet that Lou Chesler had had a relationship with her and introduced her to Rosenbloom.

Please correct me, because I hope my impression is wrong. There seem to be plenty of connecting relationships to discuss here, with promising potential. Point me in a direction, if you have a suggestion, or pursue these leads yourself, or tell me I am wrong.....nothing to see here....

A Fast $70 Million

The two high-altitude standouts on last week's gyrating American Stock Exchange (see Wall Street) were General Development Corp. and Universal Controls, Inc. Shares of General Development, the mailorder merchandiser of Florida houses and lots (TIME, May 19), zipped from 59⅛ to 69⅝, and its success boomed the stock of a flock of lesser companies planning Florida land developments. Universal Controls, an electronics maker, moved from 84 to 97. Both stocks have more than doubled since Jan. 1. Last week Universal announced a four-for-one stock split, plus a 10% stock dividend and a boost in the yearly cash dividend from $1 to $1.20 on the present stock. General Development leaked word of a three-for-one split, planned after the company distributes a 25% stock dividend in mid-May.

Unknown Giant. The man who benefited most from the fast rise is an up-from-the-sidewalks Canadian financier and promoter, Louis Arthur Chesler, 46, chairman and prime mover of both Universal and General. Lou Chesler came to the U.S. three years ago with $4,000,000, has since run up a paper profit of $70 million on his Universal and General holdings alone. Yet few Wall Streeters know him, since he keeps in the background, trains the limelight on his U.S.-born junior partners.

A bulging (6 ft. 2 in., 256 lbs.), blue-eyed son of an immigrant Lithuanian shopkeeper, Chesler grew up in Peterborough, Ont., quit university to go to work on Toronto's Bay Street. As a customer's man for the brokerage firm of Draper Dobie & Co. Ltd., he showed a talent for picking the right stocks, later grew rich underwriting dozens of Canada's new mining projects, chiefly those of Ventures Limited, the mining colossus.

He spotted Universal Products Co. early in 1956 when it was a corporate shell with a treasury of $10 million. ...Beginning no later than 1960, Lansky hatched a grand scheme to create a "Hong Kong West" (2) in the Caribbean: an offshore center that would bring together gambling, narcotics, dirty money, and Murder Inc. under one unregulated and "highly respectable" roof.

First, Lansky picked the Grand Bahamas Island as the site for a plush casino-resort. Operating through a Canadian "cutout," longtime business associate Louis Chesler, Lansky negotiated a purchase of a large tract of land on the island and oversaw the construction of a grand hotel, the Lucayan Beach Hotel, which was completed and opened for business before the end of 1963. (3) At the time the venture began, casino gambling was illegal in the Grand Bahamas — except for those hotels that received a Certificate of Exemption from the Bahamian government.

The most powerful political figure on the island, chief of the so-called "Bay Street Boys," was Sir Stafford Sands. Several meetings between Sands and Chesler and $1,800,000 in bribery later, Lansky received his Certificate of Exemption on March 27, 1963. On January 22,1964, the casino at Lucayan Beach was opened under festive circumstances that Hank Messick described as follows:

The international jet set was on hand to give the event some class, but Meyer Lansky's veterans were in complete control. Red Ritter was general manager; Max Courtney was credit manager; Charley Brudner was his assistant; Dino Cellini was supervisor, and so on. As a matter of fact, Dino had operated a school in London to train the dealers and stick men who came originally from Sicily by way of the syndicate casino on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. (4)

Phase One of Lansky's "Operation Respectable" completed, the old wizard proceeded with the next steps. First, he cleared the way for a consortium of "legitimate" investors headed by the Miami-based Mary Carter Paint Company to buy into Hog Island (renamed Paradise Island by its owner Huntington Hartford, the multimillionaire magnate of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company) and to receive a Certificate of Exemption for the construction of a hotel-gambling casino. Sir Stafford Sands, now in Lansky's hip pocket, saw these measures through and simultaneously announced that the Bahamian government was undertaking the construction of a bridge connecting Grand Bahamas to Hog Island, to be completed by December 31,1967. What sort of weird entity was Mary Carter Paints and why had Meyer Lansky gone out of his way to open all the doors on Bay Street to it?

To begin with the obvious, Mary Carter Paint Company was involved in more than wall coverings. In 1958, it was effectively taken over by merger with the Crosby-Miller Co. — a Florida company about which little is known except that former New York Governor and two-time Republican presidential candidate Thomas Dewey was one of its biggest investors. (6) Dewey's "Mr. Clean" crime buster reputation, dating back to his days as special prosecutor during the 1940s, was a perfect cover for Lansky's move to Paradise Island.

Via the 1958 merger, the president of Mary Carter Paint Company was James M. Crosby. Crosby's brother, Peter Crosby, was a convicted stock swindler and a close business associate of Dino Cellini. Cellini was the first lieutenant to Meyer Lansky and was known as Florida's "connection" to Canadian heroin trafficker Guiseppi Cotroni. So even with Gov. Thomas Dewey's Anglophile profile on the label of every can of Mary Carter Paint, the product was severely tarnished by big-time crime.

Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba in 1959 had been a bitter pill for the Lansky syndicate to swallow; however, it taught the old wizard a valuable lesson: don't take politics for granted. Before he socked tens of millions of dollars into his Grand Bahamas dreamland, Lansky would make absolutely certain that he was treading on solid political ground.

So, in 1964, Lansky arranged a small scandal centered around the sudden "revelation" that Lucayan Beach promoter Lou Chesler had connections to organized crime boss Meyer Lansky! Chesler left the island no doubt laughing all the way to the bank, and Lansky became invisible.....

St. Louis connection to Michael Jackson: Attorney Alvin Malnik

TWO DEGREES OF SEPARATION: South Florida kingpin and St. Louis native, Alvin I. Malnik, 76, has been getting a lot of face time since Michael Jackson’s death. Malnik — a product of Clark Elementary School, Soldan High and Wash U. — was a friend of Jackson’s for a long time and says the King of Pop asked him to become godfather and parent to Prince Michael II, “Blanket” if anything happened to Jackson.

Malnik has been interviewed about his connections to Jackson by NBC’s Today Show, CBS and the Palm Beach Post, among others. Malnik is an attorney who had close ties to mobster Meyer Lansky and was at one time considered Lansky’s “heir apparent.”

Malnik has said he signed a document in 2003 saying that he could take custody of Blanket if anything happened to Jackson and that he also agreed in writing to be the executor of Jackson’s estate. Malnik says that Jackson at the time became the godfather of Malnik’s then 11-year-old daughter, Spencer. Jackson and Malnik reportedly had a falling out in the past couple of years. The cause of the estrangement is unclear.

Jackson used to seek refuge in Malnik’s 15-bedroom, 35,000-square-foot Palm Beach County mansion in Ocean Ridge. He reportedly would stay there for months at a time with his children and an entourage. Malnik was Jackson’s attorney and said he helped him refinance his debt with Sony and the Bank of America. Malnik also was the owner of the exclusive Forge restaurant in Miami, which he sold to his son Shareef.

Jackson sat with Malnik at the head table during Malnik’s 70th birthday bash at the Forge in 2003, which was attended by my predecessor at the Post-Dispatch, Jerry Berger. Berger was a longtime friend of Malnik’s. He

wrote about the party that “the invitation to Florida itself was unique: a taped message from the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. But the event lived up to its billing. Jackson, accompanied by a full phalanx of bodyguards, was on hand to welcome Malnik’s guests, including B.B. King, Smokey Robinson, F. Lee Bailey and celeb lawyer Roy Black.”

Berger included the names of some of Malnik’s St. Louis pals who were at the shindig: Attorney Martin Green, merger and acquisitions mogul Gilbert Kopolow and L.A.-based sales exec Barry Gelber. He said the Harbour Group’s Sam Fox and his wife, Marilyn, friends of Malnik’s since high school days, were no-shows but were represented by a magnificent floral masterpiece from the Fox den.

Malnik also turned up with a connection to St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley. His name was on a list of campaign contributors as having donated $2000 to Dooley’s unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 2000; Dooley was

a St. Louis County councilman at the time.
