Born on a Sugar Plantation in Terrebone

Beginning January 14, 1938, conducted a 6-day length filibulter of the "Wagner-Van Nuys Bill" in congress which was referred to as an "anti-lynching" bill, which came about as the result of the lynching of two black males for murder at Duck Hill, MS in 1937.

"Today I am told, Castro will not permit sugar to move out of Oriente Province, unless he is paid so much "tribute" from the growers.

Actually, from the existing records, it appears that Senator Ellender departed for Cuba on December 8, 1958 and his first day of reviewing conditions in Cuba (December 9, 1958) also corresponds directly with the day in which William D. Pawley was in Cuba and meeting with Batista.

During the visit to Cuba, Senator Ellender met with Cuban Government Officials. He addressed the Directors of the American Chamber of Commerce; visited the Moa Bay Mining Company; and on December 12, 1958, gave a press conference in Havana.

During his press conference, Senator Ellender spoke openly in support of the existing Batista Administration and against the Rebels (Castro), at a time when US Policy was one of non-intervention.

The U.S. Embassy "noted that Ellender had been prodded by certain correspondents "into statements" critical of US Government policy toward Cuba, and referring to the revolutionary elements as 'bandit groups'."
