  1. Robert Cairo's bio on LBJ ought to be required reading. Corrupt? The guy fixed his election for college president! A very hungry, greedy, driven, strange man.
  2. Steve, your topics on JTR has inspired me to do a bit of dabbling in the case, nothing to contribute (I've mostly been fiddling with the letters to do image analysis, etc - a good source would be helpful), but to jump in before Tim! Throwing all caution to the wind and not meaning to detract from the serious side of the topic but having fun with some coincidences: The guy who supposedly vanished to the US> At the time of the Great Exhibition in Chicago (Crystal palace:Ruby,White City:KKK) there was a club around people fascinated by the whitechapel murders. At the same time there was a Texan in town who appears to have been inspired by ole Jack (Jack, Jackie). He built a 3 story murder house where he, in secret chambers and passageways, disposed of ladies who came to Chicago seeking fortune. His assumed name? :: Harry D. Holmes!!!* ( connection to Post Office? he wrote letters But serioulsly. The DNA thingy could prove most interesting. (BTW I think one of the centuries old 'bogmen' in Denmark with a rope around his neck has been matched with a report of a taxman disappearing while visiting a village near where the body was found.) EDIT:: * must have HD on the brain, I mean HH in the ripper instance. The guys name was H.H. Holmes, aka D.W. Mudget. Try 'The Devil and the White City' for a great read about this extraordinary madman. Who was far too organized and ghoulish to be JTR. Holmes sold the skeletons of many of his victims to medical schools! The apartment building in Lawndale that he built was a death factory. These methods are so different from JTW that I really doubt that it could be the same personality. Besides, Holmes earlier history is known. Now that guy Tumblety (?) who ended up in St. Louis, he fits the profile for JTW real well.
  3. For month's now, I have been watching the same series of events occur repeatedly. A discussion is ongoing until a single member bombards the discussion with extraneous, irrelevant or outrageous arguments and comments. The discussion is then doomed to eventually degrade into the same one sided set of arguments back and forth. This has the net effect of terminating the original discussions, which I suspect may be the goal of this one member. So, my question is: Why do y'all continue to engage in this game? If nobody takes the posters bait, the strategy is doomed to failure. Just wondering, ya know?
  4. While not a cabinet level position, my understanding is that J. E. Hoover was to be long gone. Remember, hell hath no fury like a woman (wanna be) scorned. Apparently Hoover knew what was coming thanks to the ever present wire taps. Motive anyone?
  5. Part of what makes this a fascinating topic is the multitude of potential 'reasons' why JFK was killed. Seeking an end to the Viet Nam war, which he apparently was. Seeking an end to the oil depletion allowance. Accepting the influence and aid of organized crime, and then unleashing his brother on them. "Rule #1, you take our money, you leave us alone". The failure to support the BOP with the US military. Apparently seeking reconciliation with Cuba. Apparently seeking to lower tensions with the Soviet Union. Lyndon Johnson's overpowering ambition, and fear of indictment. The described changes to the Federal Reserve board, which could have had a huge impact on wealth and the economy. And gawd know's how many more. Which of the above was the straw that broke the camel's back? At what point did a comittee of powerful people say "enough, he's got to go?"
  6. Re: "John, I believe that all communists and all fascists are liars in the sense that they subvert the truth to the advancement of their political philosophy". Does this mean that Shrub and the rest of the Neocons are communists due to their subversion of truth to justify thier invasion of Iraq?
  7. Sounds interesting but far fetched to me. I don't think anyone would purposely want to set off nuclear war. Did you find the author credible and compelling? Can you summarize the author's main evidence/arguments? Did he nave a national security background? Len I don't have the book in front of me, but: Yes, I found the author credible and compelling, with a background in the submarine service. Main argument: A hard line Russian faction, headed by Suslov and Andropov, both desparetly feared the Chinese and knew the Soviet economy was doomed. China had been given a very small number of nuclear capable Russian diesel subs while the Russians and Chinese were still friendly. The Chinese missles were inferior in range to the Russian product. Special missles with plutonium traceble to Chinese sources were loaded onto a Russian sub very similar to what had been given to the Chinese. At this time, Soviet atomic arms were inventoried and distributed by the KGB. Additional 'crew' in the form of a Spetnaz unit (also KGB) was assigned to the sub at the last minute. The sub was positioned with range of a Chinese missle and the sub taken over by the Spetnaz, who set about launching the missle. The missle exploded (detonators, not nuclear) owing to amatuer efforts to bypass the arming safeguards, which sunk the sub, breaking into several pieces on the ocean floor. The US knew about the missle explosion owing to satelite surveilance, which is how they knew the location. The Glomar Explorer is created and used to recover all major pieces of the sub. The resultant evidence is used to prove to the Chinese the Russian intentions, and also given to Soviet moderates to understand what the radicals tryed to do. Most of the crew was found secured into the extreme front of the boat, implying confiment. At least some of the Spetnaz squad was identified and the fact that the crew was 20% larger than normal (the Spetnaz) was confirmed. Can you summarize the author's main evidence/arguments? This is a well written cohesive book with a lot of evidence presented. I would not have mentioned the book here if I didn't think it worthwhile. Seems to have had access to the recovery crew on the Glomar and other in depth sources. Did he nave a national security background? As I recall, the author's background is in the submarine service, so you might get a yes to this question. I found this to be a real interesting book and I suspect others here will too. Give it a read.
  8. A couple of friends who used to work at "America's Super Station' were sure that they had identified the CIA spook at their workplace. He was there to ensure 'correctness' in time of national emergency. He also new about the Reagan assasination attempt over an hour before it hit the media, which is real interesting as he was employed by the media. One starts to wonder if every major media outlet has their assigned spook, hence the enormous media smeer campaign against JFK.
  9. I am grateful for Stone's JFK, if only because several of my friends, who prior to seeing the movie thought Norm was just a little 'odd', asked me to suggest books after they had seen the movie. I think it raised the awareness of the general public a great deal. Despite the nits that the CT community picked at, the movie is closer to the truth than most of the public had realized.
  10. My 2nd attempt to post. In today's Chicago Sun Times; William Brashler, author of the Giancana bio 'The Don' recalls interviewing Antionette as part of his research. He concluded that the princess "knew nothing about her father's business". From what I read, the authors of this new book have not done nearly the research of some members of this forum. She has previously had some interesting things to say about the current mayor of suburban Rosemont, Donald Stephens. She recalls that when she and her girl friends hung at at Daddy's motel in the 60's, Mr. Stephens was eager to fetch her towels and refreshment. Stephens later bought the motel from Giancana, and has been the only mayor the town of Rosemont ever had. Though I don't blame her, or her brother Chuck, from trying to make a buck.
  11. According to Sins of the Fathers, it was Joe Kennedy who initiated the MM hit to protect his boys. An interesting theory.
  12. My comment regarding Mr. Cohen came from several books I have read over the last 30 years. At this moment, I don't remember which ones, sorry. Do I think Mikey Cohen originated the plot? Hell no. Could his resources been used? Quite likely. Would he have surrendered control of his empire while in the big house? Not necessarily. There are numerous examples of Capone, Luciano and Gianacan running their fiefdoms from jail. Why would a mobster want to own a race track? Same reasons Al Capone had Sportsmans Park. Aside from the fixing of races, there is all that cash to skim. Who do I think killed RFK? The same people who killed one brother and framed the other.
  13. Len, agreed. I will attempt to track down the sources for these claims, but you should know that the LAPD were no less tardry in their handling of physical evidence in 1968, than the DPD were in 1963. Regards, Steve. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I presume most everbody has read or seen L.A. Confidential, in which the chief of police trys to takeover organized crime when Mickey Cohen went to school. Given that the author routinely created very well researched novels about actual events, I wonder how much truth there was to this plot? Local governments attempting to 'regulate' (that is, control) 'vice' is a very old idea. My maternal grandfather, an associate of Anton Cermak, said LA in the 60's, where he had retired, was as corrupt as Chicago in the 40's. That is a staggering amount of corruption, as the Outfit ran Chicago with total impunity in those years.
  14. So the Mickey Cohen and Aristotle Onassis theories don't hold any water. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I never meant to suggest that Mr. Cohen or his associates originated this plot, only that they or their assets cooperated. If I want to kill someone in a hotel, it will be lots easier if management cooperates.
  15. Anybody else read the book Red Star Rogue? It alleges that the Soviet missle sub that sank off Hawai in '68 was about to nuke Pearl Harbor in a KGB plot to frame the Red Chinese. Also that the entire sub, in pieces, was recovered by the Glomar Explorer. Real thought provoking stuff.
  16. I gotta have my wife look at this board so she can learn that I am, by far, not as she claims; "the most cynical man walking about today". Great review. But didn't LHO also do Judge Crater as well? How bout Nicky and Alexandra? Is there no end to the man's menace?
  17. Norman, in the words of Mr Posner "Case Closed" Steve. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, Gerald's new book! The lone nut assasin with a bent knife wearing the 'Fair Play for Moldavia' sign board.
  18. C'mon, I thought everybody knew it was the Duke of Clarence!
  19. I'm reading lots of stories about how NO (New Orleans) disaster preparedness money has all been divirted to the military after 9/11. There have been dozens of warnings about how vulnerable NO was to a hurricane, all of which were ignored by the Feds. FEMA looks like a bunch of impotent idiots about now. Looks like 2 less Red states in the next election?
  20. Anybody have any thoughts on the attempted assassination of Reagan by John Hinkley Jr? He seems like he has lots in common with other LNs like Bremer and Chapman. Is the a case of the right trying to eat their own? Or, for that matter, how did Squeaky Fromme get so close to President Ford with a loaded 45? That just happened to 'misfire'. Was this a warning to Gerald to fly right? (small pun intended).
  21. But why would Castro want to assassinate Jimmy Carter? Mebbe Tim can tell us.
  22. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Norman, It was a clip-on necktie. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, that was me copying someone else's quote. LA law enforcement apparently was and still is a cesspool. There is a story that the Black Dahlia killer was known to police who were paid off to cover it up. Right nasty.
  23. In William Casey's autobiography, he describes how he was posted to the US embassy in Tokyo before the war. He would write back letters and reports saying how the only thing people were talking about was the coming war with the US. Most books aknowledge that the US knew an attack was coming somewhere, as we could read most of the Japanese codes, though we didn't necessarily know where. Japan intended to declare war and then attack. The declaration was timed to be only hours before the attack. Roosevelt had the Japanese diplomats kept waiting until after the attack occurred, now it suddenly is a dishonorable sneak attack. What a perfect tool to motivate the American people. So, did Roosevelt know an attack was coming? I think so. Just look at the warnings sent to Pearl Harbor before the attack using language like war is very possible in the near future. Did Roosevelt know the attack was going to be at Pearl Harbor? That is the mystery. Apparently, most US intelligence thought the target was the Phillipines. The real quandry is, why were the aircraft carriers sent away? Was this coincidence or planned? Because: Pearl Harbor was a DEFEAT for the Japanese! Their plan was to INVADE the islands not just attack them. Because the aircraft carriers were missing, the Japanese fleet was vulnerable to counter attack. Therefore the invasion was cancelled. Think about how difficult the war in the Pacific would have been if the Japanese held Hawai at the beginning of the war.
  24. There is very strong evidence that Zangara was there to kill Cermak, who was literally at war with Chicago organized crime. Some weeks previously, Frank Nitti survived an attempted hit by two Chicago policemen who had been sent directly by Cermak. Zangara was going to be killed anyway by OC for misdeeds, he was given the opportunity to kill Cermak, as it would be easier than what Mr. Nitti's people were going to do. Cermak was 50 yards from Roosevelt when he was shot, they were not in proximity. All the hype that Cermak stopped a bullet for Roosevelt was done for their mutual political benefit. For every statement of that type, FDR gave more federal aid to the bankrupt Chicago government. Wonder what the payoff was for Cermak's alledged last words, "better me than the President". The encycopedic "Outfit" is an excellent source about this. This is not to say that I don't doubt that there were powerfull men who wanted to kill FDR, who they regarded as a traitor to his class and a communist.
