  1. I am a 59 year-old grandmother in North Carolina. After working in banking for many years, I was disabled by a stroke in 1995. These days I spend most of my time reading, researching, digesting, and pondering. Since my formal education is limited to two years of junior college, I feel somewhat humble among the many lettered and distinguished people here. But there are two things that I know I share with all of you - a deep appreciation for learning, and an abiding passion for the truth.
  2. Richard said, "Needless to say, I also hope Cheney chokes on his dividend checks. I'm sure he's thrilled that my 80 year old widowed mother will get very little if anything, while he's laughing all the way to the bank with check in hand." Richard, My heart goes out to your mother, and to so many others who have been screwed over because of corporate greed. I grew up in the town that was the home of the Cannon textile empire, and many of my family worked their entire lives in the mills. A good number of the retirees here suffer from emphesema and brown lung. When these cases started to surface, the Cannon family sold out, and they are still enjoying their fortune. My father-in-law has emphesema. He lives off social security, and the 25 dollar-per-month pension he gets after working for nearly 50 years in the mill. The concept of corporate responsibility seems to have been completely obliterated.
  3. "Carol, I read the thread name and went "Haliburton the B******s" do you think I'm psychic maybe, or just deeply cynical... " I wouldn't call you psychic or cynical, the word I would use is ASTUTE. Thousands of people in the area are now jobless. It would make sense to me, given the situation, that local businesses be given the contracts, and that local people be hired to repair and rebuild. But i suppose that idea makes too much sense.
  4. According to the Houston Chronicle: Halliburton Hired for Storm Cleanup The Navy has hired Houston-based Halliburton Co. to restore electric power, repair roofs and remove debris at three naval facilities in Mississippi damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Halliburton subsidiary KBR will also perform damage assessments at other naval installations in New Orleans as soon as it is safe to do so. KBR was assigned the work under a "construction capabilities" contract awarded in 2004 after a competitive bidding process. The company is not involved in the Army Corps of Engineers' effort to repair New Orleans' levees. I hope VP Cheney chokes on his dividend checks.
  5. Thank you, John and Mike for your insights. I, too, am of the opinion that FDR did not have prior knowledge. Researchers have theorized that FDR knew of the attack and allowed it to take place so that the US could be drawn into the conflict "honorably." I say that this premise is illogical at best, if not downright foolhardy. After all, retaliation could have been justified if the Japanese had only fired the first shot. The base would have been prepared to defend itself, and we would not have seen such a level of devestation. I will read Prange's book. Thank you for the info. Carol
  6. I know it has always been rumored that FDR knew about the attack on Pearl Harbor before the fact. It is rumored that, not only did he have prior knowledge, he deliberately allowed it to happen, so that we would be pushed into the war with Japan. In researching this rumor via the internet, I have come up with several websites, such asTHIS and others, but they appear to be sort of speculative in nature. Does anyone here have any knowledge of these events that you would like to share? Thanks. Carol
  7. John said: "The most important implication of this story for JFK researchers concerns the manufacture of false documents. The CIA have not only been involved in destroying important documents, they have created false ones. Therefore, when Oswald’s CIA file is eventually released, should we really trust what it says. The general opinion will be that as the CIA have spent so much energy making sure the file is not published, it must be true. However, for cynics like me, I believe the file was tampered with soon after the assassination. I expect the same is also true of Oswald’s FBI file." This has always been a concern of mine also. How can we ever hope to untangle such a twisted ball of twine, when the records and documents being relied upon are themselves so questionable? It is like basing a life or death medical diagnosis on symptoms reported in the medical history of a hypochondriac Common sense dictates that if you are attempting to cover up a criminal act, you do not retain evidence of same. The CIA, FBI, ONI, and NSA are all aware that researchers have attempted to link Oswald to their organizations in some way. I think it is probably wishful thinking to believe that records may eventually be found to prove this connection. .
  8. Just a sidenote RE Greg's comment about Oswald's learning the language while in the military: My nephew joined the Air Force straight out of high school. He is an exceptionally intelligent fellow, and he maintained a 4.0 GPA all through school. After enlistment and basic training, he was sent to the military's foreign language school at Monterey, CA, where he was taught to speak Russian fluently. Then he was shipped to an obscure AFB in Germany. He was told while in Monterey that, although he was AF, he would technically be working under the auspices of the State Dept. At that time, the cold war was on its last legs-as a matter of fact, he was in Berlin when part of the Wall came down, and he brought a piece of it home to me. I don't know what his security clearance level was, but his running joke was that when the family (his parents included) would ask about his work, he'd laugh and reply, "If I told you, I'd have to shoot you." Not long after the Wall came down, they began dismantling his base, and he was sent back stateside with an honorable discharge. He is now a detective with the local police department, having been promoted to the detective bureau after less than a year as a patrolman. Many people find the idea of Oswald being involved in government intelligence to be ludicrous. My contention is that his involvement is more likely than not-and not merely as an informant, but as an agent, albeit at the very bottom rung on the hierarchy ladder. In those days, the cold war was at full tilt, and a marine with a command of the Russian language would undoubtedly have been considered an asset. Recorded accounts of Oswald's behavior clearly demonstrate the fact that he was a secretive man. He often opted to live apart from his wife, and apparently neither she nor anyone else was privy to info concerning his finances. I do not find Oswald's failure to disclose his involvement to his family surprising, in light of my own nephew's behavior. To this day, my nephew has not been forthcoming with any information concerning his work in the AF, even though the cold war has been over for years. Even after his arrest, there is no indication that he attempted to explain his movements either before or after the shooting so as to try and clear himself. It occurs to me that he may have been deliberately on guard while being questioned, possibly awaiting some sort of instructions from somewhere that were never going to be given.
  9. David, Since my original post, I have been directed to THIS WEBSITE, where I found some additional info regarding Oswald's reentry from Russia. The info on this website is taken from the Warren Commission Report. Part of the loan info is quoted below: " After his reentry, Oswald repaid his loan without having to be reminded by the Department to do so. The early payments were very small because he first repaid the approximately $200 he had borrowed from his brother Robert to apply against the expenses of his travel from New York to Fort Worth, Tex. The schedule of payments is as follows: Aug 13, 1962 10.00 Sep. 5 1962 9.71 Oct. 10 1062 10.00 Nov. 19 1962 10.00 Dec. 11 1962 190.00 Jan. 8 1062 100.00 Jan 28 1962 106.00 Total: 435.71" Note the amount of the last 3 payments. I am assuming that the last payment was made in January of 1963, rather than 1962, and that this is a typo. I am going to do some more digging. It will be interesting to find out where he was working during the three months that these large payments were supposedly made. My husband and I were newly married and living on one minimum wage income (his) during 1963. Payments of this size would have been next to impossible for us at that time. This may be a trivial point, but it interests me, as I have always believed that Oswald was connected in some way to either the FBI or the CIA.
  10. At the site referenced below, the city of Dallas has posted photocopies of various documents and other evidence related to the assassination. While browsing through these files, I came upon some information that I found interesting. It seems that in one box of the documents found in Ruth Paine's home during a search conducted by the DPD, a copy of a note issued by the US Dept. of State, and signed by LHO was found. This note, in essence, is Oswald's agreement to repay to the State Dept. the sum of $435.71, for "transportation." There is no date indicated on this note. In another inventory list, reference is made to a note (or promise to pay), signed by LHO and indicating "for repatriation." This note is dated 6.1.62, and was also found at Irving. In a list of the inventory found at Oswald's Beckley room, reference is made to a note issued by the State Dept. stamped PAID, and dated 3-9-63. I found this interesting for several reasons: Was the note in the amount of 435.71 for "transportation" the sum total that Oswald owed to the State Dept.? The 435.71 was obviously for airfare, but was he loaned additional money by the State Dept. "for repatriation," as another note found stipulates? Even if 435.71 was the total owed, I find it rather hard to believe that Oswald, who was either unemployed or working at minimum wage between June of 1962 and March of 1963, was presumably helping to support a wife and child, supporting himself at different locations, paying to have Hands Off Cuba documents printed, etc, would havr been able to repay this money within a nine month period. This would have meant he repaid the government at the rate of nearly fifty dollars per month during that timespan.. It seems to me that, in order to do this, he would have had to be receiving income from some other source. Was he being paid by another government agency during this time? Or was the State Dept. asked to forgive the loan by another agency? Does anyone know if records are available concerning the total amount of this loan and how it was repaid? 11. My name is Carol Reid, and I reside in the Piedmont area of the state of North Carolina. My formal education is limited to high school, two years of undergraduate study at college, and two years at the American Institute for Paralegal Studies. Until 1995, I worked for a large bank in the area of foreign currency.. I am now retired, by virtue of a physical disability. Like so many others, I was shocked and dismayed by those dark days in Dallas that unfolded before my eyes back in 1963. And like so many others, I have been in search of the truth since that time. This website promises to be an invaluable aid toward that end.
