Greg - I guess the point I would make -- setting aside the controversy about whether the guy sent to Bellevue was the actor of 1970s fame -- is that things like this were put down VERY quickly after the assassination. (Someone who recalled seeing a pro-Castro Oswald in the USA in 1961 when the real deal was supposedly in Minsk.) In another very similar case, journalist Ray Carnay reported to the FBI the weekend of the assassination that he had met with a very provocative Castro-sympathizing Oswald at an airport hangar in Dallas in 1961. The FBI grilled and badgered Carnay repeatedly (after digging up some old arrest records that would have ended his career and holding them over his head like the Sword of Damocles) in an effort to get him to change his story. Which to his credit, he never quite did. Sort of a similar circumstance, dontcha think? These kind of things must have seemed very inconvenient.

Sterling - This is all great stuff, especially about Lansdale and Anderson. Is it all sourced someplace, or is your information-filled post sort of an accumulation of your own personal research? Is it published someplace?

Thanks, RCD! I'll see if I can't get ahold of these documents. To Kathleen's point, the thing that interested me about Nebel (Knebel?) is that based I what I found out about him digging around on the Internet last week, he was indeed increasingly controversial later in his career, what with his wife and the Marilyn Monroe stuff, etc. But his reputation as of October '63 was simply that of a guy who liked to discuss provocative topics and had a large national audience, I gather because of the strength of WOR's signal. So he would have been a logical choice for someone to call up in October of '63 if they were trying to replay/reinforce Oswald's pro-Castro antics and rants from the New Orleans episodes (street scuffles and radio station interview) over the summer. In other words, could this have been an effort to sheep-dip Oswald on a slightly larger stage? This is suddenly fascinating the hell out of me. Remember that the whole Landesberg stuff that John Armstrong covered occurred in New York.

I asked about this back in the "Dallas On-Line" thread, but it is starting to get buried in the more general ongoing discussion. Had anyone else ever hear about this supposed call to WOR "about six weeks before the assassination"? I can't recall ever having heard about this before, and I'm certain I've not seen any declassified documents about it. I was hoping maybe Jack White or Robert Charles-Dunne or others with a good deal more institutional memory on this kind of thing than me can tell us if they'd stumbled across this before or is this new to them, as well? Is this really all we have on this? A third-party account after the host, Nebel, has told the columnist, Considine, about it? It's odd that there wouldn't have been follow-up FBI interviews of one or both of them that would not have turned up in the files over the years. In any event, the call would have been around Oct 11, so if Nebel was remembering it correctly, it would not seem possible that Oswald would have been calling him from Louisiana around that time. Was someone impersonating Oswald for the benefit of a nationally known radio show famous for covering provocative topics? For what purpose? It's also interesting to me that the call was "paid" and that "Oswald" volunteered to travel to New York on his own dime to do a radio interview. Anyone have any thoughts or perspectives on all this? An interesting FYI that may or may not be relevant to this thread: Source: FoxNews Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting Dallas on Monday for undisclosed reasons. Cheney and is wife, Lynne, arrived at Love Field airport at about 11:15 a.m. The smiling and waving couple exited Air Force One about 5 minutes. A limousine quickly escorted from them from the tarmac.

I am not sure if he told me he was SENT to Dallas or was in Dallas. If he was already in Dallas then he would have been dispatched by MI at Love Field (112th I think) or ONI at Hensely Field. (if he was Navy) I think he was already in Dallas and perhaps I assumed he was "sent" being as I was SENT from Florida.... Its been a long time and as I've said I am recalling from memory. I put him as being associated with the Dallas Cubans on a early gun running operation that had nothing to do with the JFK assassination. That was before JFK about 1961-62 I think. Thanks, Tosh. I think we are saying the same thing: that some of this racist stuff could have been salted in among the relevant JFK stuff over the years so as to provide cover for its not being released. The most benign interpretation I can come up with is that I think there's some indication that the Dallas cops and DA were very upset when the FBI swooped in and absconded with much of the evidence. Some of it could have been held back sort of passively-aggressively (to teach Hoover, et al, a lesson) until at some point later in the 60s they realized they should have turned it over to the FBI or Warren Commission. I can also come up with a number of less benign interpretations. By the way, do you have any recollections of anti-Castro soldiers of fortune named Richard Tullis or Charlie Waters who operated in and around Dallas in the late 50s and early 60s? Tosh - Thanks always for your man-on-the-ground insights w.r.t. how things fit into the Texas political context relative to the times. I very much enjoy your posts on this forum. Have you considered that while there certainly may be a lot of truth in all this about the racist background of law enforcement in and around Dallas in 1963 (and certainly the current DA emphasized this point during the news conference), that this may have morphed into sort of a straw-man cover story as to why this cache of materials has been concealed for more than four decades? How can we be sure that there are not materials that would have been "new" or relevant to the Warren Commission in the 1960s or House Select Committee in the 1970s when sensitivities about the racial history being an impediment to Dallas' economic growth would not have been nearly as pronounced? Who was the DA in the 1990s who violated federal law by not turning these materials over the ARRB? Should his pension be revoked if he is still alive? (Yes.) If there are relevant documents that could have enhanced our historic understanding, especially given all of the publicity during the ARRB's tenure (didn't they even travel to Dallas for a meeting to try and get all extant documents from public agencies?) it's hard to imagine the DA sitting there and refusing to acknowledge that he had at least 15 boxes of materials based on his subservience to the Dallas Chamber of Commerce and how the release might have imperilled economic development. I would tend to ascribe far more sinister motives to ALL Dallas DAs who knew about these materials. There was some indication that some of Oswald's clothing was included. For all we know, the ability to test it for DNA may be gone if it has been mouldering in a cardboard box in an office safe for 45 years. This is an entirely unacceptable breach of the public trust, imho. I just received a question from Dallas. "Why do you think the material recently found in a vault in Dallas was kept secret for all these years?". My reply: "Well it was not because of the JFK matter or a cover up in that direction, in my opinion. The Dallas Police Department at one time from the late thirties until the early sixties had over half of its force connected or associated in some way with the Klu Klux Klan (KKK), minutemen, etc, and within those boxes is a lot of information that shows the attitude of Dallas P.D. toward the Blacks of Dallas. To read those pages and reports today is very alarming and sickening. A black man was hung in Oak Cliff in 1948 while the DPD watched from a distance. " Let the little n bastard rot". It was said. On another example at a place near Bauchman Lake near Northwest Highway at Love Field and Lemmon Ave a young white lady was found raped and murdered and left under the bridge. She had been dating a Dallas Police office at the time. Within 48 hours there was an arrest, a black man, he was tried for the crime, convicted, in less than three days and executed at Huntsville Texas within the following year. Texas justice of the time. Thats the reason those boxes were with held by the many many people that knew about what was in that vauld and safe. There is some information on background concerning Roscoe White, that was not turned over to the FBI in 1988. Information concerning JFK is in those boxes, but the real reason was as I have stated. To release those documents and notes would be bad for Dallas and its Growth image.

The documents and materials need to be given to the National Archives. Let's remember that even though the ARRB sunset, the JFK Act has not. To hell with Gary Mack and/or the Smithsonian.

That he was, at least in the late 1990s, genuine and in earnest in his belief in an ongoing conspiracy and the demoralizing impact it had on the health of the nation. I meet a lot of phony b@stards in my line of work, and I place considerably higher stock in my ability to judge people's sincerity than I do in my reading comprehension ability ...

My recollection is that Bill was a recently departed federal employee who had just gone to work in private law practice in Florida. He called me out of the blue about a year or so after the conference to go over some of the latest revelations about the assassination (from the ARRB releases; Doug Horne's work, etc.) I think a local newspaper reporter had contacted him, and he wanted to be up to speed. Haven't talked to him (or seen him at any conferences, etc.) since. But I must say, this implication from Charles is a little troubling.

As always, Charles has an excellent memory. He and I were in fact involved in this along with Xanthopolous and George Michael Evica. I guess the thrust of this effort may have best been captured by this particular paragraph:

Bill - With all due respect to your persuasive abilities, and I know for a fact they are impressive, I have to wonder aloud after having watched those video clips if you'd have any shot convincing Mathews to change his stripes. You obviously know him personally and I do not. That being said, I have to observe that he may be a heckuva good guy to go have a few beers with; and he may been in the past open-minded on a lot of issues and may remain so on most issues. But after the way he handled those interviews on national TV, it just seems to me that he's painted himself in a corner. Rather it makes the compelling case that RFK from Nov 22 on strongly suspected a conspiracy and had to shrewdly navigate around the political realities of the day while trying to figure out what had really happened. But Mathews refused to listen. (4) His selection of "reactor" guests to the previous segment, Pat Buchanan and some other yahoo whose name escapes me at the moment, both of whom felt the need to pay fealty in their first several sentences to the lone nut myth. (5) Mathews' own rather definitive embracing of the same myth. Let's set aside for a moment Charles Drago's provocative but relevant assertion: "Anyone with reasonable access to the evidence in the assassination of JFK who does not conclude that that murder was conspiratorial in nature is cognitively impaired and/or complicit in the crime." Let's assume that Mathews really is/was woefully ignorant of the facts about the assassination, of the work of John Newman, Jeff Morley, Peter Dale Scott and countless others. Let's further assume that he would have the capacity to be educated somewhat on all this over a few drinks. The fact of the matter is that he's a human being, and human beings don't like to admit mistakes. After taking such a vociferous stand on national TV, I really can't see anyone having the stones to raise the issue anew and give it any different treatment in the future. But here's hoping I'm wrong. If you are able to convince Mathews to give the issue a more rational hearing in the future, I'm more than willing to buy you some beers ...

Clint - Thanks for finding and posting that quote from Kerry. I was in Dallas in '97 when she said it and remember how we all chuckled and nodded. This kind of personal observation from a family member is worth remembering when the JFK-bashing revisionists like Hersh and Bugliosi try to bring their cr@p to the table.

Sterling echoes many of my thoughts on this. Another observation I would make is that even those entities who may not have been directly involved with foreknowledge were panicked into assisting with the cover-up because of the false sponsor trails they knew could be laid at their doorsteps w.r.t. Oswald, etc. George Michael Evica, Peter Dale Scott, John Newman and other are good at making this case. I also wanted to throw out one other excerpt from the book for those who don't have it yet that I thought was an excellent summary paragraph w.r.t. the preceding section. From p. 100: "In the ideological war to define the Kennedy administration, which broke out soon after the president was laid to rest in Arlington and continues to this day, national security officials insisted that the Kennedy brothers were "out of control" on Cuba, pushing them to take absurd measures against Castro like the Mongoose folly. This would become the standard version of the Kennedy's Cuba policy in countless books, TV news shows, and documentaries -- it was rash, obsessive, treacherous, even murderous. But this is not an accurate picture of the Kennedy policy. What in truth bothered national security hard-liners was not how "out of control" the brothers were on Cuba -- it was how in control they were. They were enraged by the way that Bobby Kennedy, and eccentric lieutenants like Lansdale, were installed over them. And they were infuriated by the restrictions imposed on their military ambitions. Frustrated in their desire to declare war on Cuba, intelligence officials declared war instead on the Kennedys, particularly the insufferable kid brother who was put in charge of supervising them. And without telling either the president or the attorney general, they took another ominous step. They renewed their sinister contract with the Mafia to eliminate Fidel Castro."

Evan - Thanks for the kind welcome. In my "day" job, I work for politicians in a non-partisan staff role. I'm the principal economist for the Kansas Legislature. I've been somewhat inactive in terms of my own research for a number of years (until the last six months or so) while focusing on my family (young children). Although always interested in the assassination, like many others I became even more active in the early to mid 1990s in the wake of "JFK". (I was especially fascinated at how Stone was hammered in the mainstream media; and how he responded so eloquently at the Washington Press Corps luncheon. If I recall, he pointed out that he didn't care if the factuality of a few issues portrayed in the movie could be challenged -- he saw the Warren Commission as thesis; and "JFK" as antithesis. In other words, he saw some sort of Hegelian dialetic. I would argue that this analysis is appropriate in that the new "synthesis" is the much greater understanding we all now have of the forces behind the assassination as a result of the release of the files pursuant to the historic 1992 legislation, which of course was a direct result of Stone' much-pilloried movie.) In any event, I began to get copies of the declassified materials and write some of the articles referenced above. But while in my own research I tended to focus on minutiae about Oswald and other specific issues, I was frankly much more intrigued by the forest-for-the-trees kind of analyses that I was woefully unable to produce on my own. Luckily, I stumbled across Jerry Rose's The Third Decade journal, where Charles, George Michael Evica and others brilliantly challenged everyone to keep their eyes on the big picture (stop focusing so myopically on the ballistics in Dealey Plaza and ask the more relevant Donald Sutherland/Fletcher Prouty/Mr. X style questions, etc.). I also attended a number of Lancer and COPA conferences in Dallas and DC, and even made a few presentations. (Had the great misfortune of having to follow Charles one time in Dallas. I can assure you, there is no one in the field who brings more polish, inspiration and passion to the table.) I have monitored the Education Forum off and on for a number of years, but I really became more focused quite recently with the Hunt confessions; and especially the publication of David Talbot's book, which in my judgment compellingly tells a credible and chilling story of the 1960s that has been concealed, be it intentionally or not, from all of us by the mainstream media and most historians. I think it's terrific that David has been able to come in here and offer his insights. I met him briefly at Cyril Wecht's conference in 2003, and he and Jeff Morley and John Newman deserve Congressional Medals of Honor, as far as I am concerned. Bravo to Dr. Simkin for setting this up for all of us. Hope I can continue to contribute around the edges.

I notice in David's book that he correctly points to the significance of William Walton's "back-channel" mission to Moscow to convey RFK (and Jackie's) message that they suspected a domestic conspiracy; and in any event knew that the Soviets weren't behind Oswald and/or the assassination. I further would note that among the Soviet era documents given to President Clinton in Cologne in 1999 and later declassified was a telegram sent on 11/25/63 from former Soviet First Vice-Premier Anastas Mikoyan, reporting on his conversations the prior day with U.S. officials at the funeral and a subsequent White House reception attended by Jacqueline Kennedy and LBJ, indicating to Moscow that, " . . . the US government does not want to involve us in this matter, but neither does it want to get into a fight with the extreme rightists; it clearly prefers to consign the whole business to oblivion as soon as possible." In my mind, Mikoyan's telegram provides evidence that the U.S. strategy of pinning the assassination solely on Oswald - as outlined in the memo by Deputy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach to Bill Moyers (originally drafted on the evening of November 24) - was being disseminated to the rest of the world even as it was being developed. The playbook for the Warren Commission was in essence being written weeks before LBJ even agreed they would be established. In any case, although the telegram does not make it clear who at the reception gave "we're not going to hang you guys or Cuba out to dry on this and start World War III" message to Mikoyan, it would be interesting to know if Jackie was in any way involved in disseminating it, especially given the similarties to the overture that Walton would soon make.
