In 2003, his book, The Underground Railroad Conductor, was the first volume to document the Underground Railroad in northeastern New York. The following year, his seminal work on northern New York, The Underground Railroad in the Adirondack Region, was published by McFarland and Company; in 2006, Abel Brown, Abolitionist, a reprint of an 1849 biography, Memoir of Rev. Abel Brown, which he edited and annotated, was also published by McFarland. After his groundbreaking work on New York, he turned his attention to the biographical dictionary, People of the Underground Railroad, which includes 100 in-depth biographies of persons associated with the Underground Railroad and which was published in the fall of 2008 by Greenwood Press. Currently working on a second volume for Greenwood, Places of the Underground Railroad, he is the year 2008 winner of the Underground Railroad Free Press award for his contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field of Underground Railroad history.
