I am the half-brother of Richard Cain and author of "The Tangled Web". I'm here to review and participate in the discussion regarding Richard's alleged involvement in the JFK assassination.

  1. I don't think the most serious allegations of Richard Cain's connections to the assassination place him in Dealey Plaza, but rather, some other incidents that he was allegedly involved in, like the discovery of the rifle order at Kline's, and whether Cain knew of Giancana's role in the CIA plots to kill Castro and in getting the West Virginia Sherrifs to support JFK's primary election. Maybe Michael addresses these issues in his book? BK Bill, In my book I talk extensively about the CIA-Mafia plots against Castro and Richard's role in those plots. His supposed discovery of the purchase at Kline's was reported in the Chicago press by a gossip columnist, but may have been based on a self-serving boast from Richard, I haven't found any direct evidence to support the claim. I'm not denying it, just can't prove it. Nor did I find any evidence regarding the West Virginia Sheriffs. It isn't likely, though, that he played a role there. I have a pretty good idea of where he was throughout 1960 and I don't see much in his activities that would support that. Again, it could have happened, I just haven't seen any evidence. Hope that's helpful, Michael
  2. No one was ever arrested for the murder of Ole Scully. Angelo Petiti was convicted of kidnapping, and rec'd a substantial prison term. Hi Michael, Thanks for answering our questions. When Richard Cain and Sam Giancana were holded up at a compound in Mexico, they reportedly played golf at a local course. Do you know the name of the town they lived in or the name of the golf course? And do you know if Richard Cain or Sam Giancana ever played golf with Carlos Marcello, Larry Meyers or Jim Braden? Thanks, Bill Kelly Bill, Their home in Mexico was near Cuernavaca. I do not know the name of the course they played. I would say they almost certainly had occasion to play a few rounds with Carlos Marcello, but I don't know the other two guys. Sam was a fanatical golfer, but I think Richard's golfing was more of an accomodation to Sam. Regards, Michael

  4. Gary, It's true that I didn't say much about Richard spreading the word about Oswald. I wasn't trying to hide it or deny it, I simply couldn't find any evidence of it, save one newspaper article which stated it was so. Do you have any information that would back up that claim? Michael
  5. Wim, There isn't much in Double Cross that I would characterize as accurate, especially the speculation about the white hand/black hand - you'll have to wait for my book to see that finally explained. I believe Dick was killed because he represented a threat to the mob leadership of the day. He'd been having some territorial disputes with Marshal Caifano and that led to concerns about his future plans. He certainly held Caifano in low regard, that didn't help. No, there is no provabel alibi. I've been told he was in Miami that day, but so far I've been unable to substantiate it. Michael
  6. Richard Cain my well have been in a good "position" to have been selected, but he possessed niether the skill nor the vision to carry it out. I can't claim he's been maligned unfairly, he certainly was no angel, but in the hundreds of interviews I've conducted with friends and enemies of Richard, no one seemed to credit him with exceptional marksmanship. What I see here is people reaching for ways to prove a conclusion rather than trying to reach the truth. Richard never worked for the CIA, though he surely tried. I have copies of the reports he prepared for them in Miami as well as their internal memos leading them to a decision to decline his assistance. Remember that at the time of the Castro plots (late 1960) Richard had recently been forced to resign from the Chicago Police Department and was marginally credible because of that. He had recently been introduced to the Chicago Station Chief by Paul Newey. Newey was responsible for the trouble that led to his resignation and by his own admission (to me) he felt responsible and wanted to help. Newey had been OSS during the war and kept up with his old buddies as best he could. Richard danced around that relationship and tried, while he was with the Sheriff's dept (62-64) to solidify it, but was rebuffed. Most of what I've read begins with speculation and winds up offering that speculation as proof. It really doesn't wash. That said, I would be willing to work with any serious researcher to validate any hard evidence they might possess. Michael
