Officers of MI5 – responsible for the “defence of the realm” – say they owe their allegiance to the “Crown”. They defer to no other power. They have used this in the past to justify operations against MPs and ministers and – in the case of Harold Wilson’s Labour administration – the elected government of the day.

They therefore have a double interest in the maintenance of the monarchy. The Crown is their protection. It also embodies and stands at the head of the shared values of the traditional establishment, which includes army officers (some of whom are court officials, while others are apparently in the Prince’s circle of advisers) as well as senior MI5 and MI6 officers.

When not sniffing Diana's underwear, the fearless guardians of the realm otherwise known as MI5 - the Insecurity Service (IS) - were bugging her phones. A late 1989 conversation was surfaced by the IS in 1992 in an "affair" that became known as "Squidgygate." The matter resurfaced in the course of the latest official whitewash:

Diana's squidgygate tapes 'broadcast by spies'

By Nick Allen

Last Updated: 4:35pm GMT 09/01/2008

British intelligence officers may have been responsible for recording and broadcasting the so-called "squidgygate" tapes between Diana, Princess of Wales and her lover, the inquest into her death has been told.

In full: Diana, Princess of Wales

The Queen personally ordered an internal investigation by MI5 after finding out that the princess was being bugged, Ken Wharfe, the princess's former bodyguard said.

The conversation between James Gilbey and Diana, Princess of Wales was allegedly broadcast on a loop

Other royals and even Cabinet ministers were also "routinely" kept under surveillance he said.

The Queen acted after conversations between the princess and a lover were recorded and deliberately leaked by the GCHQ listening centre at Cheltenham, Mr Wharfe said.

The so-called "squidgygate" tapes, revealing intimate moments between the princess and James Gilbey, were allegedly played on a loop over the airwaves by the secretive spy station until being picked up, several days apart, by two amateur radio hams, Cyril Reenan and Jane Norgrove, near Abingdon in Oxfordshire...

Michael Mansfield QC, representing Mohamed Fayed, whose son died with the princess in a Paris car crash in 1997, said: "If the Queen asked for an internal investigation by MI5, when was it carried out and what were its results?"

Meet the "dark forces" described elsehwere by Elizabeth II.

Paul, you may be interested to know that the TV documentary film producer/director who made the first three TV documentaries broadcast on British TV (for Channel 3) about the Di Assassination conducted considerable research into what happened. He had excellent contacts in the intelligence circles and others. He was in no doubt that it was the "defence of the realm" boys who did the dirty deed. What he was basically told, as he recounted to me later, was that there was concern that Di would set up shop with Dodi (in, I believe? the old Duke of Windsor mansion outside Paris) and that the fear was that this would, in effect, result in there being two courts -- with Di's being the far more popular one.

The Di was cast, I imagine, when Queen Elizabeth was overheard to say, "Will no one rid me of this troublesome princess?"

I love your historical puns, Ron. Reminds me of a long deceased co-worker

Diana's Butler Tells Some Secrets

By JUMANA FAROUKY

Time/CNN

January 14, 2008

He called himself Princess Diana's confidant, "the hub" of her world, the keeper of all her secrets. He became an indispensable part of her life and probably knew her better than anyone else. And even after writing two tell-all books following her death, he insisted there were stories he would take to his grave. So when Paul Burrell, Diana's former butler, first refused to answer the question, you knew the answer had to be bad.

The minute he took his oath at the inquest into the deaths of Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed on Monday, Burrell became the closest thing this extended soap opera has to a star witness. Sitting with his hands clasped in front of him, speaking so softly that the lawyers had to ask him several times to talk louder, he spent most of the day answering questions about relationships: his and Diana's, Diana's and Prince Philip's, Diana's with Dodi's versus that with her ex-boyfriend, heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan. But it was near the end of the day that focus turned to the friction between Diana and her mother, Frances Shand Kydd.

Michael Mansfield, lawyer for Dodi's father, Harrod's owner Mohamed Al Fayed, asked Burrell to repeat for the court what he had heard Kydd — who has since died — say to her daughter during a phone call in June 1997, a call that Diana had let Burrell listen in on. At first, Burrell balked, saying, "Respectfully, that's not very kind to a woman who's no longer here." But the judge ruling over the inquest, Lord Justice Scott Baker, insisted. Burrell stared down at his desk, chewed his lower lip, took a deep breath, and then, as his voice started to crack, said: "She called the Princess a whore and said she was messing around with eff-ing Muslims and she was disgraceful and said some very nasty things." It was after that conversation, he said, that Diana decided she didn't want to speak to her mother ever again.....

More on the Milosevic plot which seems identical to the Diana plot:

"Diana inquest: MI6 'plotted tunnel murder'

By Nick Allen

Last Updated: 4:19pm GMT 13/02/2008

MI6 plotted to murder Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic in a staged car accident in a tunnel five years before Diana, Princess of Wales died in a similar crash, a renegade former spy has told the inquest into her death.

Richard Tomlinson, who worked for MI6 in the early 1990s, told the High Court he had seen a two page document, drawn up in 1992, detailing three plans to kill Mr Milosevic.

Diana inquest: MI6 plotted tunnel murder

One plan was to use a strobe light to blind Mr Milosevic’s chauffeur

...

A third plan was to use a strobe light to blind Mr Milosevic’s chauffeur as his cavalcade passed through a motorway tunnel during peace talks in Geneva.

Mr Tomlinson said the plan was shown to him by a senior MI6 officer referred to as “A” who argued that a crash in a tunnel would mean fewer witnesses and a greater chance it would be fatal.

The former MI6 officer also said he had been shown a strobe light by members of the SBS during his training in Poole, Dorset.

He was told that the equipment, which was portable, was intended for blinding enemy helicopter pilots as they tried to land at night.

Mr Tomlinson gave evidence on a video link from Marseilles.

He was called as a witness to the inquest after he told a French magistrate that the Paris car crash which killed the Princess, Dodi Fayed and chauffeur Henri Paul on Aug 31, 1997, bore an “eerie similarity” to an MI6 plot.

He told the inquest that “A” was a “very ambitious and diligent” MI6 section sub-head, aged in his early 30s.

He is referred to as “Fish” in Lord Stevens’ police inquiry into the crash. Mr Tomlinson said “A” showed him the plan in his office on the 11th floor of Century House.

It gave a justification for murdering Mr Milosevic because of his plans for a greater Serbia, a feared genocide of Albanians in Kosovo and his support for Radovan Karadzic, the Bosnian Serb leader.

The circulation list for the document included the private secretary to the head of MI6. “There was no doubt in my mind that A was entirely serious about his plan,” Mr Tomlinson said.

“He was an ambitious and serious officer who would not risk his career by making such a proposal in jest.”

Myra, It is worth adding, I think - something the Daily Bellylaugh would never volunteer - that Richard Tomlinson has been hounded by SIS because he became a whistleblower. The last I heard about him he was on the breadline living in Europe (not France). The depths that the SIS has gone to, to manipulate him and these events are partly covered (or were) on his blog that disappeared last July. The Bellylaugh merely mentions Tomlinson was imprisoned, thus creating (spinning) a certain lack of sympathy in the minds of ordinary law-abiding Brits.

That is certainly worth adding and knowing David, thank you.

Mohamed Fayed's fury at 'Nazi' Prince Philip

By Nick Allen

Telegraph.co.uk

18/02/2008

Mohamed Fayed has accused the Duke of Edinburgh of being a "racist Nazi" who ordered MI6 to assassinate Diana, Princess of Wales because she was pregnant with a Muslim baby.

In a series of extraordinary allegations at the inquest into Diana’s death, Mr Fayed also accused her former husband the Prince of Wales of plotting her "murder" so he could marry his new "crocodile wife" Camilla Parker Bowles.

Mr Fayed told the princess’s High Court inquest that he had fought a 10 year battle against a vast, international conspiracy encompassing both the British and French Establishments as he tried to prove that she and his son Dodi were assassinated by MI6, on the orders of the Duke, in a staged car crash in Paris on Aug 31, 1997.

The alleged conspiracy and subsequent cover-up included senior members of the Royal Family, MI6, two former Scotland Yard Commissioners Lord Condon and Lord Stevens, the French police and medical services, the princess’s own sister Lady Sarah McCorquodale and several of her close friends....

Nazi Prince....ah, leave it to the Brits....they always do the best TV dramas!....Good Show!

Actually Peter I think it's been quite clear for some time now that Diana was murdered. Now whether or not she was pregnant is another matter. But the cover-up has been most revealing. And her diary- shades of Nicole Brown Simpson, predicting her own murder, is one more piece. The "finding" and then death of the Fiat driver is just TOO damn "coincidental". At least for those of us who know how these "coincidences" really add up. But this will be another cover-up. When the powers that be off someone it's gotten away with. Those of us who study such events are peons to be chuckled about by the powers who moniter these boards.
