The CIA created and helped to fund the Congress for Cultural Freedom, which sponsored 30 plus journals in as many countries to counter anti-Western propaganda by the Soviets.

Socialist Norman Thomas was chairman of the administrative committee of the American Committee for Cultural Freedom. Writers included Arthur Schlesing, Jr.; Reinhold Niebuhr; Robert Oppenheimer; John Steinbeck; Saul Bellow and James Baldwin.

Somehow CIA support for these center and even left-wing but anti-totalitarian writers is not of great concern to me.
